    Welcome back to part 2 of my daughter Wawa's 71 VW Beetle project. In the last video we replaced everything in the braking system and now we are going to finish up the brakes, replace the entire wiring harness, carburetor, coil, switch it back to electronic ignition conversion, and some new casings! Our plan is to get this thing back on the road after 23 years parked and get it completely ready for her to get her learners permit and start driving.

    Been building vws over 20 years. My advice is adjust the valves cold. 006. Do them regularly. And that 009 distributor you have need to set timing at 32 degrees at 2500rpms and let the base timing stay where it falls. Vacuum advance distributor will run better with that carb. Great work as always. Love your channel and what you do with the family.

    I'd recommend installing a new brake line kit. Runs about $60. The front to rear tends to be the main failure point. And definitely replace the throttle and clutch cables. Also replace the oil cooler seals. They will be so dry from sitting and will eventually start leaking pretty bad. Original would have been a vacuum advance distributor. They may have removed the lower tin to get to the thermostat. Did you notice if there was a bellows in there? Stock engines will have thermostat driven flaps in the fan shroud. If the bellows fail, the engine can overheat. Also get some new fan shroud hoses so you don’t lose air. This can cause overheating.

    🚨🚨 **IMPORTANT** tip for the battery and wiring under the back seat! It would be wise to cut a piece of wood to fit under the back seat or some sort of insulation. The springs from the bottom of the back seat can sometimes ground out on the battery terminals and other wires when someone is sitting in the back, which of course can cause power wires to ground out on the seat springs and melt the entire wiring and cause a fire. I speak from personal experience when I was young and drove a 1975 Super Beetle. GREAT job on the restoration, that is one happy lil gal! ☮

    • @surlycrosscheck1
      @surlycrosscheck1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I also mentioned it to him. He responded so I’m sure he’ll work something out. Reason it happened in the passed is because people replaced their old batteries with the incorrect ones. They’d move to a group 35 battery for example. A lot of people don’t even know what that means. Well, the short version is, the group 35’s (and others) are far taller than the group 42 batteries the cars came with from the factory. That added height was what created the hazard. People just didn’t know. People would simply blame the car and poor design etc. when in fact it was the doing of their own or an unaware mechanic putting the wrong sized battery in the car. Bugs are the best and extremely reliable when one knows how they work. 👍

    • @nolsp7240
      @nolsp7240 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. Happened to our family beetle when i was an early teen. Good thing we were still in the car when smoke started coming out of the seat. Gave us plenty of time to put out a small fire. It left a hole on the front cover of the rear seat though.

    • @surlycrosscheck1
      @surlycrosscheck1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nolsp7240 as mentioned, the wrong battery was installed. This often happened back in the day because people simply didn’t know. Factory batteries (group 42) were shorter. People blamed poor engineering not knowing that incorrect battery replacement was the true reason. 🤷🏼‍♂️

      @seanmorris ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There's (iirc) a set of flaps behind the air cooling shrowd with some linkages to divert the cooling until the engine warms up. It used to be a recommendation to check the linkages were still connected.
      (The heater channels on my old beetle were blocked/welded shut and I only had one heat exchanger and couldn't afford a real replacement for one so had a 'J' pipe in one side. I had a foil heating tube from the one working hot air source near the back seat through to near the gear stick in an attempt to keep me warm in snowy weather 😀)

    • @ocavant
      @ocavant ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@seanmorris Correct. They mount to the inside of the fan shroud. On the passenger side (1/2) under the cylinders there would have been an expandable brass bellows with a rod going straight up to the flaps. When the engine warmed up, the bellows would expand and then open the flaps to allow max cooling to the cylinders.
      Over the years many people would remove the entire system. Not a big deal in the SW where you need max cooling and have very little need for a fast warm up. The flaps are very much needed in cold climates where they greatly aid in warm up and in engine reliability.
      Even though I live in So CA I put them on all of my cars, but I’m sort of an original equipment dude and like everything factory.

    Make sure to replace the fuel filter with a metal one, many vw have burnt to the ground from plastic fuel filters, congratulations Wawa on your first car. My first car was a 1966 ford country squire station wagon w/ 390 bb, three on the tree, have a blast with your new baby and stay safe 🎉❤

    I ran a 009 centrifugal advance distributor for years with points and had no problem with it. But also ran a Weber 30 pict carb which was the best carb I ever had on my VW. After 10 years with that combo, I installed a Pertonix ignition kit which was the single best improvement for my car. Had to tweak the timing a little but never had a starting problem. I would advise adjusting the valves as soon as possible as it is important to engine longevity.

      @surlycrosscheck1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. 👍 I forgot to mention valve adjustment. Simple task but important (after a head torque) just to be sure. Hopefully he sees your comment. I’m still running points and my car’s original 30 pict 3 carb and vac advance. Never leaves me stranded. Absolutely flawless combination. Never bothered jumping to electric ignition. Never know though. Maybe someday.

    Hi Josh another storey about my vw experience. Back in the 1980,s i owned 2 vw Westfalia campers. A 1974 and a 1975.
    The engine in tge 74 put a pushrod out through the top of the block one day. I bought a KEP adapter kit from a shop in Maine and installed Mazda 12a rotary from a local junkyard. The body was getting past its best and i picked up a 75 westy with no engine and transplanted the 12a into it for a rad i used one from a 1974 Chrysler New Yorker that i had retired. It was mounted out front with a substantial angle iron frame and the large VW circle logo. No more connecting rods to pop out. The 12a was smooth and sweet to drive in the otherwise sedate camper. Funky exhaust note too . That camper eventually went to a junk yard and regretfully i did not save the engine and the KEP adapter plate and clutch. Have a great day. I am waiting for your family,s next video i still have a pic of the blue 74 with the rad out front. Tom up in Canada at the NB-NS border

    The Beetle is a great first car! They are solid, easy to maintain (actually just changing the oil is all you really need to do). It was good to see the only exhaust smoke was at the the initial start up, after that there was none, even under load when driving it.
    The engine is so very easy to work on, like a motorcycle really, with the Jugs requiring removal to access the block or to change rings. Plus Jugs are very inexpensive!
    Maybe Squeezy can add a bit of her artistic skills to the vehicle somewhere.

    I'd definitely recommend disc brakes on front, with some wheels that give a wider contact patch & set the suspension up/upgrade for better handling. Beetles are tin cans when they get hit, so you want to make it easier to avoid collisions/as safe as possible.

    My 1st car was a yellow 73 Super Beetle..(I paid $1000.00 in 1980 for it ) .It is so cool to see a whole new generation drive, work on and grow to love these cars...You are right, they are economy cars but they are a ball to drive..I've owned probably 4 or 5 more air cooled bugs after that over the years.

    GREAT job! Watching you guys work on this VW is just fun!! Josh, two items for you: 1) Replace all old grommets with new ones whenever you can (your nice, new wiring is going to rub right through those 50 year old grommets) and 2) Clean and lube (dielectric grease) all old contacts (especially when they've bathed in rat piss).
    OK, we've got too get Josh the biggest variety kit of body grommets and a case or two of dielectric grease!!

    This is so relatable. Dad going above and beyond on the first car to make sure its as safe as possible...my dad replaced all the brakes and casings on mine and my brothers first cars....despite mine having been my grandparents incredibly well maintained car for years (and the only other previous owner having been my great uncle) and my brothers even though it was only being 3 years old when he got his.....protective parents for the win...

    Another great episode! Wawa is going to love driving this car. I learned how to drive in a yellow 72 bug when I was 12 yrs old. I always looked forward to deer season. We hunted on 604 acres & we would leave our Ford Econoline cab over Open Road motorhome ( similar to the 1 y'all are rebuilding) & the 72 bug @ the deerlease & would use my dad's 78 Silverado to drive back & forth home. The stand my dad would hunt was on a pipeline that ran through the middle of the lease & was very close to the camp so he would drive his truck to his stand. The stand that I hunted was on the same pipeline about 800 yards apart. The only way to access my stand was by a gate on the far side of the land. All of the roads were blacktop or dirt. My dad would give me the keys & tell me to drive it like he taught me, so I did. I learned a lot about driving during those hunting seasons. BTW, my dad was a police officer for 35 & 1/2 yrs. In E.Tx. Have you ever tried using a rubber hose & plastic bottle when bleeding the brakes. All you have to do is put 1 end of the hose on the bleeder screw & the other end through the lid of the plastic bottle. Now when you bleed the brakes the air & fluid goes in the bottle instead of all over the bottom of the car & on the shop floor (especially when you get into the new shop). It'll save you some cleanup time that you can use on another part of the car. Thanks for all the family friendly content!!😊😊❤❤👍👍 I'm sorry for the long comment, but that old bug brought back a bunch old memories!! Thanks!! Keep up the awesome work!!
