- We are back with the 82 Mercury Zephyr. This time we are fixing the brake system and cleaning the car up for the first time in 15 years. We are trying to get the car ready for its first road trip to the Shades of the Past car show in Pigeon Forge Tennessee and only have 3 days to do it, but first we pick the kids up from school in what they call an ugly old car. How will they react?

The memories your kids will have with you on these adventures and projects you can't put a price on my kids might get embarrassed when I roll in with a project LOL but I've had my 15 year old come out and say she wouldn't have it any other way

Both the lower sides Armor All the tires and buy a rebuilt carburetor or maybe even try to rebuild it yourself. I was just order a rebuilt carburetor for RockAuto and be done if you haven't put new plugs in put your plugs in if you haven't replace the air filter and fuel filter replace them that's it that's a keeper! Lindsey oil might be a good idea I don't know I've never tried it but I'm getting ready to on my truck

Facts!!!
Tip for the tail light lenses: Butyl tape. If memory serves, that was a go-to for lenses when I worked for a Chrysler dealer. We used to through that stuff by the case with mechanics using it to fasten everything but their coveralls with it. 😂

All my kids know is getting picked up in various old cars, tons of wrecked rusty ones and some pretty decent, even downright presentable ones on occasion. Always a good time! We love em rusty, crusty and forgotten, glad y'all do too!

To clean the chrome back to showroom condition, is to use regular kitchen foil scrunched up. I used to use that on the chrome wheels on my motorbike. Loving your videos

I came back to this video after watching it 10 months ago and it is great the second time around! When you mentioned it was a 1982 Zephyr (Fairmont rich folks version). I remembered a story about the Fairmonts. I was employed at the Augusta University Police Department from 1977 until 2000 and at one point our patrol cars were white Fairmont station wagons. It had an inline 6 which wouldn't pull a toothpick out of a bull's butt. The only thing it had going for it was the A/C. Needless to say the other law enforcement agencies had a great time making fun of us. The University System finally relented to allow it's campus police departments to police pursuit vehicles off of the State Contracts. I had an 87 Ford Crown Victoria which was a magnificent car. I kept it beyond it's time to be traded! Memories!

What I have learned from the mechanic in a garage, is to always lay one (or more depending of how high!) wheel under the side of the car when it's jacket up! In that case you can never injure yourself, when the car slips off it's support! 😊😊

From all the rescued cars I've seen on this channel, this is one of the best. I loved the design of the Ford Fairmont Futura/Mercury Zephyr 2 doors like this one. Upgrade the windshield, put in a new headliner and do whatever you need to do to keep the paint nice. Definitely a keeper car.
This brings back old memories for me I used to do this with these old cars too back in the day this particular one you got here brings back a lot of good memories thank you for sharing this I really enjoyed this episode. May God continue to bless your family and you. One thing about you you got a great sense of humor and I really love that.

My wife's first car was a 79 Zephyr the same color as yours. Her car was a 4 door, but the trim, pin stripes and wheel cover were identical to your car. By 1985 the dash was already cracked just like the one you have. Tail lights leaked into the trunk. By the time we traded that thing in on an 87 Dodge Shadow she would not drive it anymore. Had it to three different dealers to fix a stalling problem. They never could fix it. The darn thing would start every time no problem. But, once it went about a mile, if you stopped it would immediately stall out. It would restart easily, but it but take about 3 to 4 restarts to get through an intersection. After about 10 minutes and it was fully warmed up it would run fine. Have not seen one like that since 1990 or so. It was fun seeing you guys getting her cleaned up & ready to stop.
You should name that car Aladdin. 🤣 The way that headliner swoops around when you're driving makes it look like a magic carpet!

I’m getting ready to restore a 1982 Futura with buckets, console and a info center! It’s also maroon and is pretty much identical to your Zephyr! It’s actually called a Futura Sport! My neighbors had one when I was growing up and they ALWAYS stalled out even when new back then! However I really like the body style and that they are still pretty easy to repair and parts are still pretty available as a Fox platform car. Thanks for sharing and letting me geek out watching you bring these old machines back to life! You have a beautiful family and you guys just exude love, family and warmth!

Hello my fellow Foxbody family! I too have a 4 eyed MERCURY FOXBODY tbe forgotten foxbody a 1979 MERCURY CAPRI RS TURBO that i have owned since 1985 and i was 16 and bought it and had ever since .And thankyou for the idea of dyeing the carpet red again .I just installed a completely new red carpet and the door skin carpet did not come with the carpet kit .so your dyeing the carpet red is a life saver! And i am blown away how exactly the same the two cars are! The whole dash and console and seats are identical! .Anywho i love your channel the most and i too LOVE THAT ZEPHYR!!!

I'd personally repaint the top half and buff the bottom half to see how the lower half looks. The surface rust you'll want to eliminate before it rusts out entirely.

The Zephyr and the Futura both took a whole lot of folks to school or work. This one braved your patience of bringing her back from the eyesore world she once inhabited not long ago. Great job cleaning this old girl up. She may not dazzle a lot of people, with their Acura and Lexus which cost as much of as a vacation cabin in the woods, but she definitely has more originality which says a bunch about just what she was intended to represent, a honest, dependable, auto for all. I think it would be fun to see you put this one back together like it was your old day job. I don't know how easy that would be to do at home, but seeing you get all the whiskey dents out and give it a fresh paint job would make for a great vid.

Well first off is always thank you for the video it's a privilege to be able to watch you all work together and two I will say the zip did clean up pretty good I have had a couple of granadas and couple Mavericks had 302s and 351s on them so I didn't like slow cars lol but yeah that car cleaned up pretty good man a little bit of TLC you'll be good definitely need to start putting v8s and some of them cars they deserve the V8

Love watching all of you work together as a family. This video brought back so many memories of my childhood. My parents had a 1980 Ford Futura that looked just like this in maroon and my dad had two granadas that he loved and he took us camping and pulled a popup behind the granada lol. He loved the granada but had a ton of problems with the futura.
I bought a 87 chevy celebrity wagon (wood grain down the sides) to drive to work ..
My girls were 14 & 15 and had been used to being picked up in new trucks & cars..
One morning (summer band practice) I was going to drop them at school when my oldest said , "drop us off here , we'll walk " .
Ha ! I rolled up to where all the kids were hanging outside before practice & stopped. Having no muffler , It was a little loud , so I floored it 3, 4 times & it roared...
My oldest got out , gave me the stink eye and nearly wrung the hinges off the door slammin it with all she had...
I still remind them of that day..
And I still get the stink eye...
Cool, my mother old car was a 1978 Zephyr with 5.0 with Automatic, red interior with grey with red on the side and cool chrome grill in the front

Man I remember my great grandmother with her golden tan 1977 Buick LeSabre. She handed it down to my grandmother. And my grandmother handed it down to me. I absolutely loved that big ol square body 4 door. I couldn't keep it though cuz it had a 350 wide block motor that locked down one day for some reason. No one had parts or anything for that type motor. Sucked I had to sell it. But you seriously live the life I always wanted. You're one of the last few real family men there are out there. Love to see an ol square body Buick one day. 😀 And I'd leave that Zephyr juuuust the way it is. Love it.

Easy way to get that inner grease seal and bearing out with no damage is after you get the outer bearing off, thread the nut on a few turns, then sharply pull the rotor toward you, the rotor will come off, leaving the bearing and seal on the spindle.

I would love to see you polish what's left of the paint. This car definitely deserves it. It's amazing how nice the interior is. The Pudding cam was super funny. Definitely need to get that on Rocky.

I think there is something stuck in the valvebody of the trans. Every time you put it in gear it churps the rear wheels like it has a shift kit installed or maybe if it has a lockup converter that it is locking up as soon as putting it in gear. Just a few things to think about. Love the content.

My dad made me help him rebuild the engine in my first car when i learned to drive. So I would have a car. I have forever been great full he did that. Cause I usually have a good idea about what’s going on with a car. I am soo proud of you for teaching your girls about cars
The rear brake that felt too tight most likely has a slightly stuck emergency brake cable. I used to come across that quite a bit.
