    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Thomas (Pierce Brosnan) steals a Monet from the museum and leaves undetected.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    When a priceless Monet painting is stolen from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the police find themselves wondering which world-class art thief pulled the job. What they don't know is that the thief wasn't a professional, but an amateur. Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) was born poor but made his way through Oxford on a boxing scholarship. With his sharp sense for business and ruthless ambition, Crown has become a self-made billionaire; but despite his wealth and power, he still seeks new challenges, and he steals art not for the profits but for the sheer excitement. However, as fun as art theft might be, it's still illegal, and investigator Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) is brought in to track down the culprit. Certain clues point to Crown, so Banning introduces herself into Crown's social circle. Police detective Michael McCann (Denis Leary) warns Banning against getting too close to Crown. She takes McCann's suggestion lightly -- until she finds herself falling for the suave thief. The Thomas Crown Affair was adapted from the popular 1968 caper film of the same name starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway; Dunaway appears in the new film as Crown's analyst.

    This was such a good film; one of the rare cases where I liked a remake better than the original, and I liked the original. I especially liked how they cast Faye Dunaway, who played the insurance investigator in the original, as Crown's psychiatrist in this one.

    The three most important parts of this remake is that in all of them they didn't make it a complete remake. It was a different theft, different real motive, and different all around cast. Brosnan and Russo just were absolutely electric in this, and their interactions really felt like foreplay leading up to them getting together.

    To this day it drives me crazy how he fits a painting bigger than the briefcase and doesn’t break the wooden frame after he folds it…I always say “crunch” when Crowne folds the briefcase. (I think even John McTiernan said something about it in the commentary.) Crowne goes home, unfolds the briefcase…painting is fine-sets it up in the wall. My mind is going “HOW???!!!”

    1:55 This is the only flaw in the entire movie. The painting is removed from it's frame but you can clearly see a wooden sub frame supporting the canvas as it is manoeuvred into the magic old masterpiece folding machine. Then, through Hollywood magic, it is folded not once, but twice without damaging it in the least and now fits in a briefcase. This is Hollywood sleight of hand and it goes by quickly. Don't blink or you'll miss it (as the producers intended). When he removes it later there is no damage and not even a crease....
    Still a great movie and made all the better by Denis Leary's magnificent deadpan portrayal of the detective. Love it.
    Cheers, D.

    Regarding the bending of the painting, later when Crown is in his home office placing the painting in the hidden safe, you can see small vertical lines at the top and bottom of the wooden canvas stretcher, almost like butting two pieces of wood together.
    With the kind of money, and possible connections (such as the forger's daughter) Crown might have, it's possible that he had a case built to do exactly that.
    I wonder if a Deleted Scene might have shown the briefcase with a type of mechanism that could have cleanly split the wooden stretcher without damaging the canvas.

    Everybody worried about folding the canvas. Number one: it's oil on canvas. Half the point of oil on canvas is durability; it's not watercolor on paper. Oil on canvas CAN be folded in half for a brief time without suffering much damage, obviously assuming you're not pressing along the crease to make a tight fold. Number two: he did NOT fold it in half. If you watch the actual scene, he clearly folds one third of the case over half of the painting and then bends the second half of the painting not in a crease but OVER the thickness of that first third of the case. The screenwriters clearly thought about this and if a canvas can be rolled with no problem, there should be no issues at all with the radius of curvature shown in this clip, which is probably like 3/8".
    You're all worried about the folding of the canvas and not the much more glaring problem: pretty easy to probe people's recollections and perhaps video for who was carrying a briefcase matching the description of the one that was (a) specially designed for strength (b) blocked the security gate and (c) was left behind at the scene.

    1:57 is a great example of a film-making error that completely takes one out of the film and breaks its spell. Until this point, Crown is "real", the museum is "real", the thieves are "real". When he takes a wooden framed painting and folds it in half without breaking the wood and damaging the painting, and does it without any effort, the observant movie watcher is brought up short as they are informed that this is not real at all. It makes no sense in our world or in the world of the movie. A big distraction and a big flaw.

    • @jaimy_games
      @jaimy_games 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He removed the wood of course, and only folded the canvas which you can fold. Do you really think a master thief and a art lover would risk damaging the painting. Of course not. Just because you don't see every single step of a progress doesn't mean it does not happen.

      @@jaimy_games this was my thought process as well. I figured he has a full restoration setup in some undisclosed location where he repaired/restored it then reframed it and returned it before anyone noticed. Similar to the movie Bad Boys toward the end where Martin Lawrence got the car and rescued Will Smith. I actually had a dream that he was hobbling to the car with Tea Leoni's help and he humorously tries to slide over the hood to get to the driver's side. "It really tied the scene together."😎

      When this scene was originally shot they showed Crown tearing the canvas loose from the wooden frame before stuffing it into his case. However, the studio didn't like the idea of treating a Monet like that (even a fake one) so they reshot the scene without him breaking the wooden frame and hoped that audiences wouldn't pay attention. They did though, lol.

    • @DirtCheapMeals
      @DirtCheapMeals 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think it's a fake in the movie: his adopted daughter had painted over the original in a run off water color. So, in this version of the story, Thomas Crown never stole anything. He simply moved the paintings around. That's why I kind of like this version better than the Steve McQueen version.

      MiSt has it right: according to the behind-the-scenes info, they tested a version where they showed Crown breaking the frame without damaging the canvas, but the focus group audience was horrified that he did that to a Monet, so the studio edited it out. (Personally, I agree - old paint cracks, there's no way there wouldn't be some damage; I'm not okay with the watercolor painting on top, either, and the water damage to the canvas when the fire sprinklers go off. For heaven's sake, the wrong degree of humidity or wavelength light can damage paintings!) To address another comment, this is the "real" Monet in this scene. Crown then loans the museum another painting temporarily to take the place of the missing Monet, and that painting turns out to be the real Monet under a watercolor copy of the loaned painting. So he only had the Monet in his possession for about 5 days. The whole thing was about the thrill of it for the man who has everything.

      Yeah just in this scene alone there are some plot holes. Or rather, extremely high risk, uncontrollable aspects that no professional thief would tolerate.
      For instance, there's a "robbery attempt" in this gallery, but Crowne's plan relies on not a single security person trying to lock down the area personally or standing at the gates. And then, a crowd of people are walking down the hall to leave, and a man carrying a suitcase crawls under the wedged-open gate right next to them and... no one notices him?
