_Everything_ about this scene is as good as it gets. As close to perfection as is possible. A true masterclass in film-making. It will live on forever as one of the greatest realistic action sequences in the entire history of film.
In reality they rarely use full auto. It's here only to make this scene flashy. With full auto you will just mostly miss the target and waste the ammo very fast. With that rate these guys would have wasted whatever they could carry in few minutes and then it would have been over for them.
Where is the realism? You really think three guys will survive a stand off against an entire LA police unit? And this was before California went woke too, they wouldn't have lasted 30 seconds.
It's an incredible scene for many reasons. I love how Pacino repositions at the end, slows down his breath, puts his elbow down, aims and fires. It's really how that's done.
@@iceman7792 The opening scene in Predator 2? It's more like a gang shooting with a bunch of incompetent cops who are better armed with automatic rifle, yet, they are defeated by a group of heavily armed crinimals.

Probably one of the greatest shootout scenes ever filmed...... So many legendary actors in the same scene, believable script, perfect camera angles.... It doesn't get any better.
The shot of Kilmer smiling and basically realizing "we did it" to his recognition that the cops are already there is so incredibly well done (5:02 - 5:04). It happens quickly and Chris' decision to start the shootout eventually dooms the crew in my opinion.
@@Blashmack They did state they would have to take them in the car, but I don't think the cops start shooting on the street with so many people there if Chris doesn't start shooting first.
@@Comictalent _"but I don't think the cops start shooting on the street with so many people there if Chris doesn't start shooting first."_ Excepted they already were present with guns at the ready ; two of them behind a truck, about to come in. From the perspective of Chris : they were on the crew (and, by extension, him.) And from the tactical perspective, the moment he gets in the car they're sitting ducks ; the cops take a straight rush by surprise, guns pointed at them and the crew couldn't do jack - they'd neither have the time to realise that they've been had by surprised nor the space to line their shots from the inside of the car. TL;DR : the moment Chris saw the cops and their wweapons, he _knew_ he had to take the initiative and shoot first. Why ? Because the first rule to deal with an ambush is a swift and brutal counter-attack. The guy was a pro.
@@Comictalent well even if they didn't shoot specifically if they all were in the car without detecting police it's a wrap. intersections were closed off, they would've been swarmed in seconds.
The cops wanted them all in the car It's not easy to get four rifles deployed quickly in such a confined space If anything the ambush shows they may have been too eager to go straight to the car If you have to collapse to a central point, you want to do it quickly and move on. Ideally they are all out of the building and are scanning the area before moving on to the car
Best shootout scene in cinema history. No dramatic music (the suspense music beforehand was outstanding). No useless dialogue or monologue. All business, no hesitation. The sound design is perfect. The only thing I thought was weird was the slo mo when Neil looks back and then in front of him in the car. True fact, this scene took many weeks to complete because the film location only permitted Mann to film on the weekends and during particular hours. And yet it runs so fluid. Bravo.

All praise to the actors, to the sound techs, to the armory guys, to all the set set guys, to Director Michael Mann, and especially to Andy McNab, late of Her Majesty's 22nd Special Air Service Regiment for making this TIGHT.
The cops would have been better off letting this crew walk away with the cash than engage in a full blown street gun battle they were not prepared for.

_Everything_ about this scene is as good as it gets. As close to perfection as is possible.
A true masterclass in film-making. It will live on forever as one of the greatest realistic action sequences in the entire history of film.
The actors were trained by a famous ex-SAS guy who had been in more than a few firefights hence the absolute realism.
Mick Gould and Andy McNab were technical support/advisors on the movie and needless to say, the scene was first rate.
In reality they rarely use full auto. It's here only to make this scene flashy. With full auto you will just mostly miss the target and waste the ammo very fast. With that rate these guys would have wasted whatever they could carry in few minutes and then it would have been over for them.
@@JoseyStranded At least Neil seemed to go for burst fire after they got out of the car.
Other than the mag swaps. Kilmer had like 500 rounds per mag
Best street gunfight ever
Some war films and action films also offer good street gunfights. Black hawk down, Bad boys 2
The Town.👏
Hell yeah brother
what about predator 2 ? the shooting is also spectacular?
@@iceman7792 The opening scene in Predator 2? It's more like a gang shooting with a bunch of incompetent cops who are better armed with automatic rifle, yet, they are defeated by a group of heavily armed crinimals.
I saw this in a movie theater. The gunshot sounds have stuck with me all this time. Nothing has ever sounded like it.
Lets be honest here, if driver wouldve turned right they wouldve gotten away smh.
Haha
Reaction to effective enemy fire. Skills
He was trying to make it to the 110 freeway, this set of blocks still exists today unchanged, that 1st intersection is Flower St, he probably didn’t turn right because it’s a one way st, turning right would have sent them in the wrong way on a 5 lane one way street.
Did the driver know where the police layed their ambush???
@@JermaineDotT You’re an LA taxi driver aren’t ya
Probably one of the greatest shootout scenes ever filmed...... So many legendary actors in the same scene, believable script, perfect camera angles.... It doesn't get any better.
The shot of Kilmer smiling and basically realizing "we did it" to his recognition that the cops are already there is so incredibly well done (5:02 - 5:04). It happens quickly and Chris' decision to start the shootout eventually dooms the crew in my opinion.
The cops would have started shooting, or surrounded the car, they did state they would have to take them in the car.
@@Blashmack They did state they would have to take them in the car, but I don't think the cops start shooting on the street with so many people there if Chris doesn't start shooting first.
@@Comictalent _"but I don't think the cops start shooting on the street with so many people there if Chris doesn't start shooting first."_
Excepted they already were present with guns at the ready ; two of them behind a truck, about to come in.
The cops wanted them all in the car
It's not easy to get four rifles deployed quickly in such a confined space
If anything the ambush shows they may have been too eager to go straight to the car
If you have to collapse to a central point, you want to do it quickly and move on.
I guess that's supposed to show clearly his assessing of the situation, him being the main villain.
Remember vividly going to see this at the cinema back in 95'. To this day, one of my favourite films of all time. Shootout scenes don't come better than this.

I don't know why, but I really wanted them to lose Pacino's crew and get away clean as a whistle. I keep watching hoping that will change but it never does...
Lots of innocents died coz of them.
ik exactly what you mean, that's the whole Main Character power, since we start off seeing it from the robbers' POVs we root for them. all it was is a difference in the sequencing and timing of the scenes and we'd be on pacino's side all the way. of course we also love de niro so that's part of it too 😅😅
Masterpiece of filmmaking! Michael Mann is truly an underrated treasure!!!
Yes, completely agree. Look up "Thief" from 1981 - also Michael Mann; James Caan stars.
Nearly 30yrs old, and walks all over most movies made now….
I have seen Thousands of Films
and no shootout scene even comes close to the brilliance of this one
priceless and will never get old
i love this scene because it demonstrates just how outgunned the police are against fully automatic weapons. if you notice all of the cops are shooting semi auto or shotguns. an army of police vs 3 dudes with fully automatic rifles would go about as well as this went. i remember playing paintball against 3 ex marines with full auto guns and well let's just say this scene was about how it went for us lol. weapons built for war are terrifyingly effective.

Val Kilmer was handy with the steel!
The best part when he started singing Skeet Surfing

Is Michael Mann a vet? This firefight's sound design and dynamics are just so life-like!
They used live blanks to get the real sounds in the shot. Makes the actual eco you’d hear from shots in a city.
THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS
One of my top 5 movies. Great story. Great acting. Great music. Great sound effects.
The sound of gunfire wasn't special effects, they were firing actual blanks and had the whole area mic'd up.
Val Kilmers trigger control and reload is godlike.
Beautifully mixed in surround! I watch this scene over and over! Well done!
What's crazy is that the North Hollywood shootout
In 1997
The shooters actually watched this movie
I remember asking my dad how the film was after he saw it in the theater-his reaction didn’t disappoint. It’s still one of my favorite movies, not only because it’s brilliantly made but also because it’s connected to my dad.
This scene has some of the most realistic and surreal sound of all bank heist movies.
The way the gunshots reverberate and deafen everything around them makes it feel that much more realistic
Never gets old
5:30 We’ve all made this smirking grin once or twice in our life. That moment we think we got away from something we shouldn’t have done. Only to realize the heat around the corner.
I WISH movies nowadays had the quality this scene had. So so so good.
it cost 60 million to make this movie. it would probably cost 300-400 million today
Still holds up as one of the best scenes ever
Michael Manns greatest film DiNiro Al Pacino Val Kilmer Tom Sizemore Danny Trejo ….. oh my word … what a cast and what a film …. and a very young Natalie Portman !!
And still hot Ashley Judd
This never gets old. I was there on location when they shot this. It was surreal even with the knowledge that it was only a movie.
Love the movie, love the scene....but no way does hannah get the call about the robbery while they are already in progress, and get there in time to be waiting across the street
I thought the same, but then the only explanation that makes sense is that they got the call and left right before the robbery but the edit makes it seem like they mobilized near.the end.
They really did a good job with the gunfire sounds in this movie. Unlimited magazines but still good sound
True fact, this scene took many weeks to complete because the film location only permitted Mann to film on the weekends and during particular hours.
And yet it runs so fluid. Bravo.
I watch this like once per month. I don’t know why.
You know why, because it's awesome.
It’s addicting!
Watch his previous version too LA takedown
There's no way this can be remade. A remake without any of these guys is not going to be worth it. Filmmaking at its best.❤ Rest in Peace Tom Sizemore.
Whenever I want to test the sound on anything...this is the scene I play.
There will never be a better film ACTION scene!!! Thank you Michael Mann and Dante Spinate!!!
When you realize all that money was insured. Those cops caused way more damage.
Yeah they could've waited until they're out of the city
If they never went after bank robbers do you think crime would drop or increase?
@Jake-p2w doesn't matter when the money is printed and not backed up by gold but we back up big wars.
I suppose they could’ve joined a capital investment group, and stolen all the money legally.
That's true I didn't think of it that way
Its the quiet background music that gives it an edge of intensity..like a clock ticking down
Someone taught Val Kilmer well. He shoots, moves, even changes clips like an operator.
They were trained by ex SAS soldier Andy McNab
Kilmers reload was so clean that it's actually used to teach others how to do tactical reloads and proper rifle control while under stress
Absolutely magnificent scene! It should have won an Oscar, at least for Best Sound for this scene alone.
Love the way the guns sound in this scene.

You have not broken in your new sound system until you have played this scene. To this day i have no idea how they recorded the audio voor this scene. Why do all other movies have those fake gun sounds.
Is GTA 5 heists inspired from this movie?
Yes
Pretty much every material about heists comes from Heat
Gta 5, payday series etc.

The cops in North Hollywood obviously didn't watch this.

Heads up Micheal Mann has confirmed the script for Heat 2 in nearly complete. It will be how Neil and the crew came to be. A prequel. Austin Butler has signed on to play a young Val Kilmer.
I recently listened to the audio book, not only does it show what the crew was up to prior to LA but also what happens to Chris after. I enjoyed it, there are some great action set pieces that would translate well to film, particularly one in Mexico...
