Good to see someone new getting into the franchise! In GX if you press X and left/right you can do the side attack from fzero X, which is double-tap R or Z. These attacks are stronger than the spin and also knock enemies off the course, guaranteeing a kill. With AX, I had the opportunity to play it at an old arcade near Ikebukuro in Japan and it was pretty fun. It's a lot harder the control than GX because the machine is shaking continuously and you use a steering wheel to turn. It feels great though and I recommend tracking a machine down if you ever go to Japan.
If you dont want the machine to move dont use the seatbelt and its much easier to control as in ax you got more grip on the ground in jumps compared to gx and drifts have grip and dont lose you any speed unlike gx where a drift costs you speed but in ax you gain speed in a drift, you can even snake with it to get an unbearable amount of speed with the drift
I used to agree with your take on Maximum Velocity, however when I actually learned the controls I quickly changed my mind. It actually became much easier to control than the original, and I began to absolutely dominate the races
Indeed. I'd only fault the controls for probably not being the best mechanic for the crampy GBA handheld. However it really does feel better than the original once mastered. Heck, one of my preferred vehicles is the Silver Thunder; a big chunky silver tank that controls like a big chunky silver tank.
Right? All you have to do is tap A around turns... the faster you tap, the tighter you turn. And if that isnt enough for a particularly tight turn, there are the shoulder buttons too.
The missions in story mode for F-Zero GX were brutal and I LOVED it. They really made you work for it (the Grand Prix mission was a lot of bullshit I'll admit). Then you beat it and you realize that there are two more difficulty modes above the normal one... awesome!
Playing F-Zero GX in VR on the Dolphin emulator was one of the greatest experiences of my life. The ability to look up while on a loop de loop was mind blowing and super useful in-game.
Can't wait to see what you got planned for a second part, as considering only GP Legend and Climax were remaining, I'm thinking that you might be covering some more extra content as well! Also, there's a couple of corrections I got regarding some stuff you've talked: -Regarding the N64 Disk Drive, its not that "most stuff" for it didn't get released outside of Japan, but that absolutely nothing about it, not even the addon itself, got released outside of Japan ever (it was a commercial failure so despite there being a plan to export it, that never happen), and the only thing remotely related to the N64DD that got released internationally was Doshin the Giant, and that was as a Gamecube game. -You can actually find patched versions of the Expansion Kit (either as a Cartridge+Expansion combo, or just the standalone Disk; the latter is the recommended option to actually save your stuff but you need to use an emulator that supports 64DD combo disk loading) that has translated Track Editor and Car Editor menus. While I haven't played it in a long while, I remember making a lot of stuff with it; surprisingly intuitive outside of figuring out what button does what. -There's a very common myth about AX in GX being exactly the same as the real deal, but its actually just a code that reenables the AX menus and timer, but otherwise its literally just F-Zero GX. The actual F-Zero AX has altered physics and controls (due to that you play it on a wheel, they resemble F-Zero X much more in that you only have two side brakes that are also used for attacks instead of separate air brakes and attack buttons), which means that there's tech from one version that doesn't work in the other one (AX has "T-Drift", while GX had much more techniques that simply don't work in AX). However, you can only get to play AX outside of a real arcade cabinet if you have a modded Nintendo Wii/Wii U and Nintendont, since unfortunately the only Triforce emulator that works does not the real arcade version of the game (There was an older version of it that did...but had a lot of issues; I tried that myself years ago so take my word on that it is unfortunately unplayable on that old emulator). That said, I didn't ever expect to see an F-Zero video from you, glad to see that you enjoyed playing them!!
Thanks for the corrections. Yeah, I knew AX and GX were different, but I think that even if I found an arcade that had the game, I still wouldn't be able to tell the difference without significantly more time in GX. 😅
One thing you should master in the GBA F-Zero is "Blast Tapping" (granted, it exists in SNES but it's made as a "must learn" tactic from MV) which is repeatedly pressing the gas to take corners and to regain grip from bumps.
Also double shoulder drift in the 3D games; by half pressing both shoulder buttons you can enter a controlled drift that in some tracks might as well be neccesary, by doing this move until you release you WILL NOT slide out and lose speed massively during a drift like you would if you just yanked the stick into a turn
If you complete all the GPs on Master mode you unlock the AX cup, or alternatively all the missions on the hardest difficulty. It wasn't locked behind an action replay, it was a legitimate unlockable in the game, albeit almost impossible for most players. Alternatively linking your Gamecube memory card with the AX arcade machine will also unlock it in GX. Also, I happened to find an AX machine in the wild in a random arcade in Indonesia, although there are a few different variants. There are the static cabinets and then there are the moving gyro ones. The latter is really a surreal experience and if you can find one near you I certainly reccomend. I literally spent the entire day playing AX as it was 10cents a track (in Indonesia). Great video though and subscribed!
One of my favorite things about the first f-zero were the stage backgrounds, especially the ones for Silence, Fire Field and Port Town, always made me wonder what kind of places they were as a kid
Not gonna lie the I can definitely see the progress in editing, script, humor, and overall presentation….in such a short time. This peak perfection lol
F-zero gx is just gold. The fact just has so much unlockable content, building machines, awesome story, awesome music, awesome tracks and awesome handling. By the way when you unlock the alternate music for mute city and big blue it's just awesome and worth unlocking.
F-Zero is so forgotten and is miles better than Mario Kart. I played and beaten 100% in the original, X, and GX. Still remains my favorite racing series due to supersonic speeds and training your reflexes.
F-Zero GX still one of my favorite games ever. It was my first F-zero game and I bought it from my local GameStop back in 2003. I still remember this was before TH-cam came into existence and when I needed help beating each of the story missions on Very Hard to unlock each AX machine I had to visit a fan made website that uploaded low resolution videos of them beating each mission on the hardest difficulty. Chapter 7 was the hardest mission for sure and it was the only one I couldn't beat for the longest time. I was able to locate an AX arcade machine at my local AMC theater, brought my GameCube memory card to unlock the Pink Spider machine. Months later I finally beat the dreaded Chapter 7 and it was one of the most euphoric moments in my gaming history. Good luck to you on beating the missions on very hard its gonna take a lot of will power and harsh language to get through! 😅
After competing Terminal Velocity and coming back to this video on accident, Terminal Velocity does handle quite well in my opinion if you are correctly utilizing blast turns and pre turning, but it does suck you need to read the manual just to play the game lol.
Dude Maximum velocity is supposed to be played with the new mechanic “boost slam” or something where you rapidly press the A button on the turns it’s essentially how you stick to the ground. There’s a lot of unlockable racers it’s criminally underrated
I had Maximum Velocity as a kid, I recall it being super satisfying once you actually figured the handling out. It took a long time though, especially since I was like 8 at the time.
23:30 - Yeah that Story mode is crazy hard. I think that's the point. You gotta be as awesome as Captain Falcon to win. The channel Designing for channel had a good video on it called "Captain Falcon - Exceeding Your Limitations".
AX has different physics and controls that you cannot experience by using the GX code. You do get different physics when using a steering wheel in GX, but those aren't quite like AX either.
Great F-Zero video! I love this series and will always wonder what could have been if Nintendo would have fully embraced this franchise like they did with Mario Kart. A strange factoid about the Gamecube's F-Zero GX is that it supports force feedback with the Logitech Speed Force wheel. F-Zero with force feedback?! Very interesting and cool.
The one series I've been wanting back for almost 2 decades. It really sucks that Nintendo can't seem to figure out that people would be perfectly happy with a modern version of F-Zero X or GX. You don't need to reinvent the wheel! Just give us cool courses, cars and a blazing metal and synth soundtrack and that'll be golden ;)
Maximum Velocity controls perfectly fine when you get used to it. It's pretty good in fact because every vehicle has different ways to control, some are very slippery some are very tight, you just need practice to figure out. I loved the game as a teen.
Great video! Nice to see someone else giving this franchise some attention. In terms of the GX section, I have one fact check and a bit of fun info. You mentioned that Nintendo knocked it out of the park when you were talking about the track design. Nintendo was the publisher, but the game was developed by Amusement Vision, a division of SEGA. And fun fact, the game was built using the same engine as the Monkey Ball series. Listen to this! You mentioned the story mode cutscene music and you specifically played the Story Mode Chapter 3 Intro scene (to highlight the comically cheese voive acting), the same music you mention later that says “F-Zero” over and over as if it’s a ballad. The crazy thing about the music that plays in that cutscene is that it’s actually a real song! I don’t know what the process was internally, but the music in the cutscene is almost a 1:1 pirated version of this other song, but with different lyrics. It’s even in the same key! I can’t take the credit for this discovery though. I learned it from this video over here by Blue Falcon: th-cam.com/video/xCs5rfnW2MU/w-d-xo.html I also just finished up work on a remaster of the ENTIRE GX soundtrack. Courses, menus, story, and pilot profile themes, all original versions remastered in an ultra high quality widened audio format. And I even include full matching recorded gameplay to the music so you can watch while you listen. It’s definitely the definitive version of this OST on TH-cam. If you’re interested to hear or you’re skeptical of these claims, have a listen at my channel: th-cam.com/video/EKrP_K52_AU/w-d-xo.html And if you really really love the music, you can have the remastered audio files through my Patreon! Again, thanks for this video, I’ll be watching your channel for more! Cheers
It's baffling to think that with the lack of fresh takes on racing games today with the usual arcade racers like Need For Speed and simulations like Gran Turismo but forget to revisit games like Wipeout and F-Zero. 🤷
Maximum Velocity was amazing. But i think the problem was your fear of taking damage. To get tight turns youll have to dance with death. The healing is very fast so as you pass by it should keep you alive.
Actually the healing rate is vehicle dependent, based on the body stat. Simply said, if your vehicle healed fast, it also had paper defense. But those vehicles also tend to have better mobility so they could navigate around obstacles better.
In f-zero x you can double tap z or r to side attack, which can also be used to quick turn, if you press z or r plus the opposite direction on the stick you can do really sharp turns.
This was a fantastic video! I actually just finished binging the series a few days ago as well. F Zero GX has become of my favorite GameCube games. This was a super fun look back at all of them. I also just finished going through Metroid and Star Fox! I would love to see a video on either!
Here is how you play F-zero Maximum velocity You hold the turn button and corresponding shoulder pad and mash the A button turns instead of holding it down this gives you clean perfect turns idk why its like that but after you do that the game is pretty fun
I really love this series with all of my heart, especially GX and GP Legend. GX is just a legendary game which was made by Amusement Vision 2(or AV2) which was a company that work for SEGA and it's previous game was a little game called "Super Monkey Ball", in fact, GX and SMB shares the same engine and yes, Toshihiro Nagoshi worked on GX too before jumping into the Yakuza series. GP Legend on the other hand, works as game based on the F-Zero anime(yes, there's one) and it's a great GBA game with much better controls than MV.
GX used to be my favourite but it’s honestly Maximum Velocity now. It’s so satisfying and rewarding and you get a lot of variety in how the vehicles handle.
Speaking of F-Zero X, I know you mentioned the controls but I think it's fair to mention just how big a difference analog controls makes to the gameplay vs the original F-Zero.
Dude maximum velocity was my childhood 🤣 It took me ages to drive it like a pro and I really could but yeah it was wonky af but it was the only racing game I had and I liked it... actually a lot. But yeah playing f zero x on the switch is like heaven.
Big F-Zero fan here, and you nailed all the main points to the series. The big allure of F-Zero is the sense of speed, which is so much better than modern car racers like Forza. I won’t nail you for hating on MV, and I agree that the machines are real slidy. The trick for me was practice. I played that game daily for years, to the point that blast-turning (tapping A rapidly during turns) was an instinct. Anyhow, great video on a franchise that needs more love. Keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot for the thoughtful comment! :) I actually played Mario Kart right after making this video and it felt SO SLOW even at 200CC which actually blew my mind.
Funny fact: Goroh will occasionally fling himself off the road and retire himself in story mode. It's rare, but it makes beating him much easier when it does happen.
Serious note, that I recognized the stock footage you were using for F-Zero Maximum velocity where the Fireball is being piloted perfectly by the demo player, it's using the tap acceleration technique. Unless you'd perfected that technique yourself using the Fireball, one of the more hard to control vehicles, I'm fairly sure that is indeed the demo that plays when you don't press start for a while. The control method that you indicated that "helps" with the slippy slidey handling is a core mechanic necessary for succeeding at racing normally. It's like saying that locking on enemies in Dark Souls "helps" facilitate combat. I don't think you gave the game a fair shake.
I actually will address this kinda in part 2, but I'll explain my mindset here, too. The blast turning/tap acceleration is clearly pivotal to the gameplay, but that's what makes this game so weak for me. When X and GX feel so perfect to control, this one is the outlier. I figured it out, I just didn't enjoy it. Oh, and that footage was all me. I actually went back and checked just now. Shortly after that, on the final lap, I hit enough walls to lose a machine. Like I said, I figured out the blast turning, I just couldn't stand how bad it felt to play. I think GP Legend and Climax were far better control-wise!
I didn’t get an f zero game until after smash. But man this series is underrated. Top 5 racing games series: need for speed, gran turismo, f zero, midnight club. Mario kart.
Beating story mode chapters on GX unlocks AX parts, and beating them on very hard unlocks AX racers too, so you are not missing out on content other than the AX race style in and of itself. I remember what a pain it was getting every racer on GX (no AX machines where I lived).
BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2: The 5 tracks we have are the ones that were in the Practice rom, and are also the ones that were added in Grand Prix 1. I personally think these are GREAT tracks, and well worthy of their place in F-Zero SNES. The 4 new machines are also a welcome addition. The 5 tracks that were lost to time, Forest I/II/II and Metal Fort I/II, have survived in a VHS recording, and they look like they were pretty fun. Hopefully we'll get to play them someday.
love seeing maximun velocity new impresions, its the hardest f-zero to learn where you have to release accel buttom and turn in again more times than usually u do in F-Zero snes.
I want Niosai videos so bad I'm watching stuff I know nothing about now haha. I love these dissections, they're almost game specific history documentaries. Also, Earthbound is no brainer territory for you. Little known in America, huge brand recognition from Smash, and the Mother journey will be an interesting dive. Or Kid Icarus.
I’m a huge f-zero fan and I’m really gonna look at trying to get the older consoles and the f-zero games corresponding so I can display them with each other, ready for me to play any time.
I used to go every day to my local arcade just to play F Zero AX and I remember the slot for the memory card. I didn't own a game cube back then but the movement of the chair was extremely immersive
"Put it on 11" ...wait, do we have a "This Is Spinal Tap" fan over here? First time on of your vids and I have to say that I like your talking style. You have a extremely pleasant way to express yourself. I am already a fan of your sense of humor. Although I grew up in the 80s there have been a few things I did not know about the F-Zero franchise like the arcade game. Because of all above mentioned, I've decided to join the "patreon army".
The people that don’t know about blast turning. Just think maximum velocity is a terrible game. It’s really frustrating because it’s one of the best and it controls like a dream.
Dunno if anyone said that already but all the tracks and pilots from F Zero AX are actually unlockable in F zero GX through entirely legit means, you "just" have to beat every Grand Prix chapter in master difficulty and every story mode chapter on very hard. I did that and while it’s hella hard the reward is pretty cool
So a detail about Blast Turning (the strategy you were talking about in the Maximum Velocity section): turning the accelerator off and then back on again in quick succession restores your traction, and you can do this as much as you want during a turn, even though the manual makes it sound like you can only do this once. It also works in every 2D F-Zero game. Now, Maximum Velocity is still too slippery, and Blast Turning *that* much (like, 3-5 times per turn on average) shouldn't be a thing you have to do, but doing it does make the handling much better.
Yeah, I didn't go into too much detail about it, but I actually initially found out about blast turning online before I knew it was mentioned in the manual. It's hard to tell from the video, but using that exact strategy was the only way I was able to complete any of the tracks
16:40 Note: the wind walker actually has the worst grip in the game. As the "balance" stat is strangely enough the grip stat. The turn stat is just how fast it spins around its vertical axis. (In other words, the wind walker is made for drifting. And it's also terrible in general because of its low top speed...)
Two Word Pro Tip for F-Zero Maximum Velocity: BLAST TURNING! (And honestly this also goes as a tip for every Mode 7 F-ZERO game in general, but Maximum Velocity the most.)
F-Zero GX is the Greatest Racing of All Time. I also played F-Zero AX on the cabinet and it was tons of fun. Unfortunately the wheel got broken and you couldn't nose dive so I stopped playing it. And now that cabinet is gone leaving only one cabinet in my entire country. If I knew how rare those cabinets are I definitely would have played it a lot more. The cabinets also can link themselves up to 8 players maybe? and there is an even rarer bigger version called 'monster ride'.
Call me crazy, but as a classic WipeOut stan, I *love* slidey controls in anti-grav racers. Taking some effort to even avoid slamming the wall every two seconds makes it so much cooler when you actually do it.

@@Korrux The Falcon Mk.II was my machine of choice. It's not the best at any one thing, but it's good enough at everything.
Love this channel!!
You’re so consistent and the content is great!
Thank you! :)
@@Niosai No, thank you sir 🙏🏽💯
Just kiss already the tension is killing me
The missions in story mode for F-Zero GX were brutal and I LOVED it.
WAIT IS IT POSSIBLE? HOW?
Can't wait to see what you got planned for a second part, as considering only GP Legend and Climax were remaining, I'm thinking that you might be covering some more extra content as well! Also, there's a couple of corrections I got regarding some stuff you've talked:
-Regarding the N64 Disk Drive, its not that "most stuff" for it didn't get released outside of Japan, but that absolutely nothing about it, not even the addon itself, got released outside of Japan ever (it was a commercial failure so despite there being a plan to export it, that never happen), and the only thing remotely related to the N64DD that got released internationally was Doshin the Giant, and that was as a Gamecube game.
Sliding is also a fine addition.
He didn't seem to understand this. I loved that game. It controls awesome indeed
IIRC if you watch the attract mode it explicitly tells you how to blast tap.
Also double shoulder drift in the 3D games; by half pressing both shoulder buttons you can enter a controlled drift that in some tracks might as well be neccesary, by doing this move until you release you WILL NOT slide out and lose speed massively during a drift like you would if you just yanked the stick into a turn
I love ALL F-Zeros and wish for a new one everytime a new Nintendo Direct comes out
funny cuz f zero might be getting a new game in this next direct
I played f-zero x for the first time a few months ago and it's awesome, I wanna play gx more than ever now
If you complete all the GPs on Master mode you unlock the AX cup, or alternatively all the missions on the hardest difficulty.
The production value for a channel this size is insane. Automatic subscription.
I'm in love with this channel
I can't describe the amount of happiness I have when you upload a video
Dude Maximum velocity is supposed to be played with the new mechanic “boost slam” or something where you rapidly press the A button on the turns it’s essentially how you stick to the ground. There’s a lot of unlockable racers it’s criminally underrated
Favourite video so far. Great sense of humor. Looking forward to seeing more of your personality in your videos
Thank you! :)
Just started watching this video and I already know it's about to be great
AX has different physics and controls that you cannot experience by using the GX code. You do get different physics when using a steering wheel in GX, but those aren't quite like AX either.
Imagine playing every fzero a year before fzero 99 lol
Imagine not playing F-Zero before F-zero 99 lol
F zero 99 joins the fight.
I haven't had a chance to try it yet 😭
You should. It is phenomenal.
OMG F-Zero for N64 was a game I totally forgot about my childhood, holy ****. Nostalga I didnt know I needed right now crazy, thanks for the review!
I learned it from this video over here by Blue Falcon: th-cam.com/video/xCs5rfnW2MU/w-d-xo.html
I also just finished up work on a remaster of the ENTIRE GX soundtrack. Courses, menus, story, and pilot profile themes, all original versions remastered in an ultra high quality widened audio format. And I even include full matching recorded gameplay to the music so you can watch while you listen. It’s definitely the definitive version of this OST on TH-cam. If you’re interested to hear or you’re skeptical of these claims, have a listen at my channel: th-cam.com/video/EKrP_K52_AU/w-d-xo.html
And if you really really love the music, you can have the remastered audio files through my Patreon!
Again, thanks for this video, I’ll be watching your channel for more! Cheers
Whoa, that song similarly is a real rabbit hole. Thanks for sharing! That's super wild
It's baffling to think that with the lack of fresh takes on racing games today with the usual arcade racers like Need For Speed and simulations like Gran Turismo but forget to revisit games like Wipeout and F-Zero. 🤷
I also had the same problem with MV but after I discovered you have to rapidly tap A on curves it became one of my favourites.
Maximum velocity is easy if you tap the acceleration button in the turn instead of using the triggers
Here is how you play F-zero Maximum velocity
You hold the turn button and corresponding shoulder pad and mash the A button turns instead of holding it down
this gives you clean perfect turns
idk why its like that but after you do that the game is pretty fun
I really love this series with all of my heart, especially GX and GP Legend. GX is just a legendary game which was made by Amusement Vision 2(or AV2) which was a company that work for SEGA and it's previous game was a little game called "Super Monkey Ball", in fact, GX and SMB shares the same engine and yes, Toshihiro Nagoshi worked on GX too before jumping into the Yakuza series. GP Legend on the other hand, works as game based on the F-Zero anime(yes, there's one) and it's a great GBA game with much better controls than MV.
F-Zero GX was actually developed by Amusement Vision, the same developer as Super Monkey Ball. Built on the same engine too. Thank you Sega!
I loved Maximum Velocity! Difficult to master and very rewarding.
Dude maximum velocity was my childhood 🤣
It took me ages to drive it like a pro and I really could but yeah it was wonky af but it was the only racing game I had and I liked it... actually a lot.
Here's hoping they announce a new one for the Switch!
Just look at all the extra features in “F-Zero GX”. That would cost like $50 in a season pass and DLC to get a fraction of that today!!!
Big up Niosai, keep it up man
Hey, thanks! :)
I love the fact that F-Zero X runs at 60 fps on the N64. It is surreal how smooth the game is
I've never heard of this game before! Well done in smashing another collection!
Thank you! :)
f zero gx speedruns are actually amazing to watch . the speed and accuracy is insane .
I think GP Legend and Climax were far better control-wise!
i joined your discord, i really enjoy all your videos so far, keep up the good work!
I thought the HL3 joke was hilarious and had to sub. Thanks for bringing light to such an underrated series!
I appreciate that, I'm glad someone likes my dumb jokes 😂 thank you :)
I didn’t get an f zero game until after smash. But man this series is underrated. Top 5 racing games series: need for speed, gran turismo, f zero, midnight club. Mario kart.
My favourite Nintendo racing series. For me F-Zero GX is one of the best arcade racing games of all times and, sure, the best in its generation.
Ax has the coolest setup, the ride lifts up when the car gets lifted on screen moves when you turn.
BS F-Zero lol. You said that name with power. Great video my man. Keep it up.
I figured this out and mentioned it at the end of the segment, but it still feels horrible to me even doing it "correctly" 😅
Great vid my man
Thanks! :)
Great video and I am a big fan of your scottthewozzian "huuwaow".
Thank you! It was a Spinal Tap reference 😂
I really appreciate that :)
The people that don’t know about blast turning. Just think maximum velocity is a terrible game. It’s really frustrating because it’s one of the best and it controls like a dream.
A recent F-Zero video? Instant view and like.
When they started making those grated rumble-strips on the sides of highways and such, all I could think of was F-Zero's slow patches.
F Zero GX deserve a remaster on Switch
You talked about the surprise of an F-Zero story, and about that: F-Zero had a whole anime, complete with a game directly connected to it.
Yeah, I'll be addressing that in part 2. Spoiler: The anime is actually not bad!
The music you had over the first Fzero game slapped😭😭
27:36 PJ!!!
we need an f zero spin off game about his taxi cab career
Greatest arcade racer saga when it comes to fun
Daily reminder that Captain Falcon A) Will always prevail B) Will always be bound C) Will be unleashing a Falcon Punch
F-Zero GX isn't made by Nintendo, but it's made by Sega.
Magfest in January usually has a fzero ax machine in the arcade every year. I always make sure to play it!
Call me crazy, but as a classic WipeOut stan, I *love* slidey controls in anti-grav racers. Taking some effort to even avoid slamming the wall every two seconds makes it so much cooler when you actually do it.
F-Zero AX actually has varying numbers of laps depending on which track you run. For instance, Mute City has 8 laps and Aeropolis has 6.
One day, Captain. One day....
Hopefully that day comes sooner
GX was so great.
I loved the car creator!
Love these videos keep em coming
