**READ THIS COMMENT** Hope you all enjoyed the review! One thing I want to note is about the 16:9 widescreen support, as I've seen several comments mention this. Yes, I am aware this game has native 16:9 widescreen support lol. However, I had already captured the majority of the footage before thinking about enabling this, and with the time constraints of trying to complete this video in time for its 20th anniversary release in North America, I decided to keep it in its 4:3 ratio. Hope that clarifies why the gameplay footage is not in widescreen! Thanks again for checking out the review everyone!
I remember seeing F-Zero GX on store shelves at Walmart, Target, and BestBuy back in 2003, the same year Mario Golf Toadstool Tour, Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Party 5, Kirby Air Ride, Pokemon Channel, Pokemon Colosseum, 1080 degree Avalanche, and Sonic Heroes all making their debut on the gamecube in the same exact year. I still remember 2003 like it was 20 years ago, and it will always be my favorite year of Christmas of all time. And also, in 2003, much like 2002, it snowed near my birthday that year, making it yet another favorite year of mine.
@@SuperFlashDriver That's a great memory to share man! Yeah, this whole console generation was super memorable, and I literally pictured being back at the stores seeing these games on the shelves through your comment. Thanks for checking out the review man!
@@GameCubeGalaxy As always. And while I would have loved the exhibition, VS. modes, or fun races against the CPUs, the story would have been too difficult for me to ever finish as a child. As an adult, I'm not sure, I'll have to try it and see how far I can go for Normal, Had, and Brutal modes and see if I can make it or not. Not to mention having it fast at 60fps (Which I"m not used to fast frames per rate as I usually tend to like it at least 40 frames per second or slower, just so it's easy for me to catch the corner or to prevent a mistake from occuring when done in 60FPS and continuously fail,) would make it a lot harder a some of the missions are split second decisions or you have a few seconds to react until you either crash or fall off the race course. Then again, I do wish I had this game back in the day because it's one of those games, much like 1080 Avalanche, The Simpsons Road Rage, Sonic Heroes, and X-Men Legends 1, that I love the soundtrack for. And yeah, I have played the demos of these games, and they give me fond nostalgia as well. I do have the game on my Dolphin Emulator with a save file that was 100% completed by a different user, and yeah, the amount of customization you can have with the game is so much I barely even go through most of the options it gives you. I'm more of an acceleration speed person and love to go extremely fast (Much like Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 mind you on the PS2), and the controls are definitely a little harder than Mario Kart Double Dash I would say. Nevertheless, it's still one of those games that is in my top 10/top 20 gamecube games that I still play to this very day.
@@KooriGraywolf Something like that. As I understand it, they thought GX was fine game, but it's sales weren't especially great, so as a studio it's like, what do you do? You could attempt to do the same thing again except "better," but that won't guarantee sales. So I think that's why Nintendo feels they need to "innovate" the gameplay before just making another.
Coming from someone who grew up with this game back in 2003, you really put into perspective why this game is so amazing to this day and why F-Zero fans like us continue to play to today despite 20 years without a game.
I genuinely believe they have reached the Apex and they cannot make a better racing game or at least a F-zero game then F-zero GX. Maybe remaster it with a couple add-on including all tracks from others games or something but seriously you cannot make a better game then this. Maybe story mode for more characters or something.
And that’s not even getting into the crazy advanced tech that keeps high level players coming back for more. The skill ceiling in this game is unfrigginbelievable.
@@christiansoldier77 I think the reason for this is multifaceted. First, gaming was only just becoming mainstream. These days, video games sell as well as major movies, but back then there was still this stigma that games were for kids and nerds. The monstrous success of Halo 2 and 3 were so unprecedented that it made the fucking news. Second, companies didn’t know what sells quick and easy. Today we take for granted constant internet access and hard drives for downloading updates and DLC, but prior to the seventh console generation this was only a thing for PCs. Since game companies couldn’t make money on DLC and shit, their main revenue source was games themselves. Publishers had to diversify their developers and game catalogues to see what hit and what didn’t, and because games were the main money makers, developers put a lot of work into making games the best that they could. The main exceptions to this were licensed games and sports games. This isn’t to say that there wasn’t shovelware back in the day. There absolutely was.
It really is a testament to the GC hardware and proper developer. The fact they could squeeze out these visuals and stand up against even today's games speaks volumes. Thanks for checking out the review!
I've played many other futuristic racers, but still to this day none has ever (or ever will) topped GX. I get adrenaline rushes even by just watching replays! This game was way too hardcore for Nintendo 😆
It's pretty interesting that this and Melee were in the same console generation, the GameCube in general felt like an attempt at bringing back the people they lost to the PS1
@@tylermuecke7875 “NO!!! WE NEED TO KILL SEGA INTO RECALLING EVERYTHING NOW!!! EVEN IF WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING LIKE PUT KNIVES AND BOMBS TO THEIR TROATS!!!” t. most sane Sega fan.
Spoken by someone who indeed possesses the deep knowledge and passion for this title. Your love, and admiration come through in this narration. Kudos on the superb footage and detail put into this!
Thank you man! Definitely a game I have a huge passion for, and was hoping to showcase in this review! Shoutout to you for providing me that NYCC footage of the F-Zero AX cabinet! Thanks again for checking out the review man!
F-Zero GX is my favorite GameCube game of all time. My greatest desire is solely to have 30 player online play on GX. Also I noticed you like to use the Astro Robin, me personally, I use the Hyper Speeder, as of me typing this I have beaten Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald on Master difficultly, but I haven’t been able to even complete Diamond, the tracks are just so challenging…
Nintendo need to rehire Sega to do it, but sadly I don't think Nintendo liked getting egg on their face that Sega did a Nintendo franchise better than Nintendo ever could lol
I found a copy of this game a few months ago. I had lost it about 15 years ago. I still have my save file. Fully completed, everything unlocked. But when I played it for the first time, to me after such a long time, I was like "how did I even do this." I remember being really good at this game but now the controls seem so twitchy. I didn't realize how much I had trained myself to play this game like I did.
Glad you found a copy of this recently again, and more so that you still have your save file! Haha the game does have a learning curve, but so rewarding once it clicks. Thanks for checking out the review man!
F-Zero 99 released last week. Seems to be a fun little game. More than what I expected. Hopefully, if successful enough, it leads to a brand new game on Nintendos' next system. Even a remake or VC of GX/AX with online functionality would be great!
F-Zero 99 has certainly surprised me with how much fun it is, but also feels like a tease for a series that deserves more. I REALLY hope they'd just do an HD remaster of GX and bring it to the Switch. Thanks for checking out the review!
@@lightdeck8357 I honestly don't think Nintendo has the capability to deliver a remake of GX. They were completely blown away when they SEGA delivered the finished title, to the point where they actually asked for copies of the source code to reverse-engineer. And I don't think they managed to figure it out, seeing as even since then they've never been able to deliver a comparable title in any way. Amusement Vision did some serious programming black magic with this game.
@@VestedUTuber ^^^^ This. It still looks good today, especially since it supports progressive mode with WIDESCREEN! I can't believe this video isn't in 16:9. Miyamoto has gone on record numerous times saying this is basically the pinnacle of the series, and it would require significant gameplay improvements (of which he doesn't really have ideas on) to bring the series back. This is why there aren't any new games. When people talk about Sega failing around this time, it should be known that it was never due to the lack of coding talent they had.
@@BlownMacTruck I wasn't talking about Miyamoto's statement on adding new gameplay elements, I was looking at it from a technical perspective. I've yet to see Nintendo even come close to producing a game with 30 individually controlled entities on massive maps with long draw distances and that kind of detail. Heck, we're only now starting to see anything comparable with the recent boom in indie antigravity racers, and those games end up using a LOT more system resources than you'd expect for their graphical fidelity due to the fact that they resort to brute forcing things. And out of all of them, only XF eXtreme Formula actually looks as good as GX, but _only_ just as good, not better (and it sacrifices a lot of details like animated driver figures). The Trackmania series could do the visuals but didn't have physics for anything other than the player vehicle, with all other vehicles just being recorded or live ghosts. Games like Forza Horizon and GRID can do the environments, but have significantly fewer vehicles on the map at any given time and run at lower speeds. BeamNG Drive _can_ do what F-Zero GX does and then some, but it almost completely grinds to a halt in the process.
F-Zero GX is one of the best Racing games on the GameCube from what I heard despite it's difficulty and this is easily the best review of this game I've seen. I don't have this game in my collection as of yet but now I need to have this game. Thankfully, F-Zero GX isn't crazy rare but it is a little pricy as it goes for $76 CiB. Either way: Great Review as always GameCube Galaxy.
Definitely a masterpiece that is WELL worth the current price honestly! Greatly appreciate you tuning into the premiere, and glad you really enjoyed the review man!
@@boreopithecus just as i hate sports game..Tony Hawk 1-3 on PS1 was the only 1 i ever touch and rly enjoy back in old days........ i like race games though XD(although haven't play any in recent years due to mmo love)
Absolutely love this game to death, it also taught me how to be a bit more strategic when racing. In most racing games it’s advantageous to stay close to the edge of the track to take turns tighter in order to stay ahead of the pack. While GX still encourages to stay near the edge you’ll be put in an easier position to be knocked off course. This creates this flow of racing defensively in the center and racing aggressively when you see an opening.
It really does have a strategic element that you begin to learn the more you play. The aspect of whether to stay on the edge of the track or not does change the typical racing mentality, and makes it an adrenaline rush. Well said man, and thanks for checking out the review!
The arcade bar near me had an AX cabinet for a few months. Playing F-zero in that thing was a transcendental experience! The entire chair swings with you as you turn on the track.
Greatest arcade racer I've ever played. A few notes: The game is a beauty to behold in 480p Progressive Scan at 60Hz. One of the best looking titles of its generation. The game has full support for matrixed 5-channel surround sound via Dolby Pro Logic II. Excellent 3D positional audio creates convincing effect of objects whizzing by your head at 900 MPH, or hear opponents approaching from behind before they can be seen. Makes the game feel incredibly immersive. My local arcade at the time had the F-Zero AX machine and the memory card feature was easy to use and worked well. The unit used a modified gamecube arcade board called the "triforce." My arcade had multiple cabinets linked together for multiplayer. I actually slightly prefer the tracks, character roster, and mildly different gameplay of the GX version to its arcade counterpart. It appears Nintendo has allocated all manpower and resources than might have gone towards a next gen F-Zero title into Mario Kart, the latest versions of which include several tracks very clearly inspired by F-Zero style hover-racing.
The game in 480p really does make a big difference. I do need to try this with a 5.1 surround sound setup...I can only imagine how amazing it'd be! That's awesome your local arcade had AX! I still wish I could've played the actual arcade machine for this. Yeah, MK8 Deluxe had the F-Zero tracks which were sweet, but feels odd too since you're not going anywhere near F-Zero speeds haha. Thanks for checking out the review!
I really appreciate you doing this. When i was younger i used to put a blanket over the tv and pretend i was in the machines cockpit lol. One of my all time favorites. I was really good at this game!!
I missed out on this Series as a kid but picked them all up a few years back. This one is one of my favorite racing games of all time! Fantastic Retrospective! That Sucks you had your Memory Card thrown out. I also love how beautiful this game is
That’s awesome you picked up the whole series a few years ago! Glad you really enjoyed the retrospective/review! The memory card scenario sucked, not gonna lie haha. The game really is stunning to see in action, even after 20 years! Thanks for checking out the review man!
Man this video is such a nice blast from the past/validation of my own feelings for this game. I think F-Zero GX and Gauntlet Dark Legacy might be the first games I think of when I think of the GameCube. So many great games on that system.
Thank you man! Glad the review resonated with your thoughts of the game! The GameCube had an awesome library of games for sure, and F-Zero GX always come to mind for me. Thanks again for checking out the review!
I'm in this weird position where I want a new 3D F-Zero game, but have no confidence that it would be better than GX. It was built by arcade-minded developers in what I feel was the golden age of video games. It doesn't get any better than that!
I do feel the same way. This game really was built with the right developers in mind, and this era truly was the golden age in gaming! Thanks for checking out the review man!
Yeah I wouldn't have any faith Nintendo could top it, if anything they'd bastardize it and make it simpler/easier or add an unnecessary gimmick. I would want Sega or someone else to do it.
I remember when kid me went with my gramps into a Sears one day (instantly calling out how old I am), and while he looked for what he needed, I was free to look at the tech section. Needless to say, this store had the smallest collection of games I've ever seen to this day. But, there was one game on clearance for $10 that had someone on the cover that I recognized from Smash. Kid me couldn't handle the difficulty, but adult me is so grateful I didn't give the game up, and I still have that copy to this day.
That's an awesome story to share man! Glad you were able to get that copy all those years ago for dirt cheap, and held onto it! Thanks for checking out the review!
I’ve been loving fzero 99 recently. Then this video appeared in my recommended. I’m now (legally) going to play f-zero gx on dolphin. I’m now an f-zero fan
Haha nice! Yeah, F-Zero 99 was fun for a little bit for me, but got old quick personally. This game is still the quintessential F-Zero experience! Thanks for checking out the review!
You have unlock me memories of a simplier, and probably happier time. What a gem this game was, I loved playing it with my brother. I have never been a hardcore gamer, but watching my brother try time and time again and not give up made me try hard too, the excitement of winning after failing so many times truly makes you appreciate it more.
What a masterpiece in every way imaginable. The game engine they made for this one is just incredible, fantastic visuals and detail, incredible speed, 30 racers going crazy and the thing doesn't slow down ever. And it still looks great today. Just masterful. Luckily i still have my copy. This one really should get a HD remake.
100% agreed. Amusement Vision worked some serious magic making the game engine for this, and that it holds up like fine wine. A masterfully crafted package through and through. I'm still hoping for an HD remaster or remake, as this game needs to be experienced by far more people! Thanks for checking out the review man!
@@GameCubeGalaxyF-Zero GX was only ever missing online play. It wouldve been akin to a battle royale before they were popular. F-Zero 99 wasn't needed for that
Fantastic review, really well put together!! I know others talked about the article saying about future F-Zero games which is such a shame since i think many people would go out and but a new F-Zero game, especially when Mario Kart 8 is still going with no new game in that series. One of the greatest and most satisfying racing games ever
Thank you man! It really is a shame Nintendo shelved this awesome franchise (as well as many others)! I think if they did an HD remaster of this for Switch, it'll prove there's a big enough market to bring the franchise back. Really appreciate you checking out the video!
F-Zero GX didn't actually bring back the full rival system, just the basics of it. The Rival system in X actually goes deeper than just to indicate who you need to beat to maintain or increase your standings and actually determines AI behavior. In X, each character has three to five designated rivals based on the series lore - for example, Captain Falcon's are Samurai Goroh, Blood Falcon and Black Shadow (all for obvious reasons). These CPU opponents will be aggressive towards you on Expert level and higher (or on all levels for designated "aggressive" racers), and your initial rival is chosen from one of these racers. They will typically try to follow you and attack you when possible. In addition the racers that spawn in 20th to 27th place (depending on class - it's 20th to 26th in Master, and 22nd to 27th in all other classes) in the first race will become aggressive towards one randomly selected racer in their rival pool. There's a lot of other fun CPU behaviors in F-Zero X - for example, unless designated as an attacker, the Wonder Wasp, Queen Meteor and Mighty Typhoon will gravitate towards the Super Piranha, King Meteor and Mighty Hurricane respectively on laps two and three, and the Mad Wolf will always spin attack whenever it catches air. GX's AI was unfortunately a downgrade, apart from the fact that it doesn't use a fixed finishing order. Instead of the various unique behaviors and complex aggressive opponent algorithm, it just has a fixed selection of aggressors who will spin attack at random.
Played this constantly just because I loved all the content like the interviews, parts, racers, character scenes, story, etc. Truly stunning breadth on top of the depth in the gameplay. I’m unfortunately certain this games follow up could never be made today so I’m hoping it gets an official re-release someday. People give him crap for this but Shiggy is right, what could they do with F-Zero that GX hasn’t already perfected
Right on man! Yeah this game was lightyears ahead of its time. I do agree though. If they make a new one, it'll be near impossible to top this. Here's hoping at least for a remaster! Thanks for checking out the review!
I absolutely loved this game and F-Zero X growing up. I don't think I ever unlocked the AX cup but it I will always remember and appreciate that these games were a whole other level of difficult. I really hope they bring this to the Switch as a port or remaster. With them reviving the original F-Zero it makes me somewhat hopeful this franchise isn't as dead as it seems.
Playing this in VR on the Dolphin emulator is flippin' nuts! You can actually look up on the loops and see where boosts are. It's a must try for any F-Zero or VR fans.
Both are excellent games (I actually reviewed Wave Race Blue Storm on the channel if interested in seeing that video too)! Thanks for checking out the review!
I bought this game in 2013 for about $5 and never got too into it... until last year. Man, I didn't know what I was missing! But, I'm kinda glad I held out on it because I definitely needed and appreciate the experience I got with it a year ago! So good! I still boot it up every now and then and absolutely love this game! Great video! Love these more in depth videos! Keep it up :)
You got this for a BANGER price! And glad you finally experienced it at the right time to fully appreciate it! Thanks for checking out the video man, and glad you enjoyed it!
First of all I gotta say this video was a treat to watch. You are clearly very passionate about this franchise and especially this title, and that's awesome to see. Despite growing up in the 90's and having ample opportunity to get into this series as a kid, I never really heard about it until Smash. I always wondered what F-Zero was about but never really got a chance. Now with the upcoming Nintendo Direct in a few hours I decided to look it up to get an idea, just in case the rumours are true. Glad I clicked on this video! You not only helped me understand the appeal of F-Zero, but it seriously looks WAY too fun. I gotta play this game at least once!!
Thank you! Glad you really found this review a treat to watch, and could hear how passionate I am about this franchise! That really means a lot! Here's hoping the Direct today has this announced for Switch, and glad I could help share the appeal of F-Zero!
I've been telling my friends about this game for years every time they bring up their favorite gamecube games. I wish Nintendo would just port this on the switch like they did Metroid Prime a few months ago. Would be an instant money maker and a way for people like me to finally play the game again since I'm not savvy with things like mods and roms. Love the video bro.
Good man telling your friends constantly about this masterpiece! If Nintendo gave this the same remaster treatment they gave Metroid Prime, holy crap...I couldn't even imagine how insane this would look! Glad you enjoyed the review man, and appreciate you checking it out!
This title made me feel so suppoerted and happy :,) This is the only racing game (besides playing a lot of mario kart) that i got into for real and and almost completed everything on all dificulties. I made me push my limits as a player so much. What a great game that deserves more praise and a sequel.
Haha glad to hear! It really was a racing game that demanded attention, but rewarded that attention to get better at it every step of the way. Thanks for checking out the review!
Thank you man!! Glad to hear you came across the channel, and hope you enjoy the variety of videos here! There's also a new review going live tomorrow morning! Thanks again for checking out the review and subscribing!
Man you've got me pumped to play this again! I don't want to even think about trying that master difficulty though. I don't think my feeble old brain could handle such intensity. Amazing review my friend!!
Heck yeah man! Mission accomplished if it got you pumped to play it again! Master is BRUTAL, and not for the faint of heart haha. Thanks for checking out the review man, and glad you enjoyed it!
Another amazing video! Great overview on the f zero games I’ve loved the series ever since I got the first one on snes when I was younger. Hopefully GX will get a switch port or maybe a new entry on next Nintendo console
Thank you man! Glad you really enjoyed the overview! F-Zero really was an awesome series to grow up with, and really wish Nintendo would bring it back already.
Glad you really harped on this game's insane attention to detail. Another example is that every single machine in the game has it's own unique boost sound effect, to the point where you can tell what racer just boosted passed you based on the sound effect heard nearby/behind you. A truly incredible game and one of the best ever made.
I had to point out the attention to detail, as Amusement Vision really was meticulous about this! Great point about the boost sounds being specific for each machine as well! One of the best games ever made for sure! Thanks for checking out the review!
Easily one of the best games of all time. And definitely one of my most favorite games of all time. When I got this game back in 2004 or 2005 at Walmart with some birthday & extra money for doing chores, little would I know almost 20 years later I would still be trying to master it. This & Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 are both games that are among some of the hardest games I ever played. I don't know if I will ever completely master them because of my dyspraxia but honestly I'm fine with that. F-Zero GX is just so much fun and has so much replayability it's something I still look forward to coming back to for many years to come.
100% man! That's a fun memory to share on how you got it, and that 2 decades later, you're still playing it! Rogue Squadron 2 is pretty rough if trying to get those gold medal rankings lol. Even if you can't master the game, like you said, it's still a blast to play through! Thanks for checking out the review!
I've been watching a few of your videos since I came across your channel the other day. You seem to have a lot of passion for these games, and you do a great job of giving an overview of them. Thanks for sharing your feelings!
Thank you man! That truly means a lot! Sorry for the VERY delayed response too lol. Hope you continue to enjoy the various content, whether previous episodes or upcoming ones!
I first played GX in 2020, but didn't really start playing it until 2021 and it is indeed a top 10 game of all time for me. I've beaten all Grand Prix cups on master and finished all but one specific story chapter on very hard, which would be chapter 7💀but I know I can do it, eventually. I've also completed a personal challenge a few months back which was getting 1st place in each cup on master with Captain Falcon himself. It was a little difficult considering his speed is nowhere near the top, but it felt good completing the challenge. I enjoyed the video!
Heck yeah man! That’s awesome you were able to beat it all on Master difficulty as well! The personal challenge of yours sounds insane, but an awesome one nonetheless! Glad you enjoyed the review, and appreciate you checking it out!
Oh Chapter 7 the Grand Prix on Very Hard difficulty is the single hardest feat to do in this game. A close second is Saving Jodi Chapter 5 and third is beating Dearborn deathborn on Chapter 8. Every single chapter is hard, but those three are ridiculous. 😂😂
Really great video. Most people talking about F-Zero on here always had a position like 'The adventure mode was too hard for me, so i stopped', so im glad i found someone who actually played it all the way through. Even though you did not mention everything to unlock. It was such a surprise to us back in the day that you had even more Racers to unlock who were not even hinted at. First me and my friend were glad that we got through all the missions, and the next difficulty first seemed like they were kidding, so we did not even really attempt it at first. Then later when we finally got the first one and thought.. 'Wait, does that mean you actually have to do this?'... And then we painstakingly did. And then even those quirky videos for every racer if you won a master cup with each one. Man, i want this game back so much
Thank you man! Yeah, if I review a game on here, it has to be beaten, no matter the difficulty haha. I thought I covered a majority of the unlockables, but didn't mention the Time Attack dev ghosts to beat lol. Thanks for sharing your memories about the game as well, and appreciate you checking out the review!
@@GameCubeGalaxy Oh right, the Ghosts were a thing to be unlocked too. I forgot how that happened. And we maybe beat a third of those, cause this seemed even to be one more difficulty on top, and did not unlock anything significant itself. And speaking of memories.. Im running straight into your Eternal Darkness Video!
must i add: most of the AX characters are unlocked by beating chapters on the hardest difficulty (unless you want to get them through an AX cabinet) -surprisingly, the final chapter on very hard is easier than the first chapter -hidenori shoji is responsible for most of the ost and who knows what he could achieve now with the switch’s audio hardware (if nintendo realized how much people loved f zero) -f zero also has an anime but follows the plot of GP legend and the japanese sub is better
Good point about the AX characters unlock requirements (as well as about the final chapter’s “very hard” mode)! Hidenori Shoji would easily push the Switch’s audio hardware if given the chance, but like you said, if Nintendo would realize how much people want F-Zero to come back. Then again, there are credible rumors circulating about an F-Zero announcement at the next Direct, so here’s hoping! F-Zero GP Legend was such a cool show, and wish it had an official DVD release! Thanks for checking out the review man!
tried GX a couple years ago on an emulator to see what the F-Zero fuss was. played for a couple minutes but found it way too difficult. now, a couple years later that i have much better reaction time and skill with games, i played F-Zero 99. absolutely hooked. i can’t wait to try GX again when i have the time! i really hope something completely new for this franchise comes out soon, because i’ve never played a racer quite like F-Zero
Yeah, I'd say definitely give it another chance! You won't regret it! In the meantime, hopefully Nintendo has this ported or remastered for the Switch! Thanks for checking out the review!
I never played any f-zero game and missed out a lot on so many quality games like this. Bought it today on eBay, I can’t wait to check this out. Fits that arcade racer style I love
That’s awesome you picked it up! If this is your first F-Zero game to play, then you are in for an exhilarating time! Hope you enjoy it man, and thanks for checking out the review!
Dude your videos are so good, reminds me I’ve got a LOT to learn! F-Zero GX *still holds up* so well! It’s one of my favorite games and so awesome to see it still get some love!
Thank you man! That means a lot! Don't sell yourself short though, your videos have superb quality to them! As for F-Zero GX, it really holds up like fine wine, and is a crime we haven't seen a new home console installment in 2 decades! Thanks for checking out the video man!
@@GameCubeGalaxy seriously though, I just can’t buy that Nintendo neglects F-Zero as a franchise to prevent cannibalizing sales from another IP. The two have as much in common as apples and bowling balls. They’re completely different games and different experiences, no different than Metroid and Zelda. 🤷🏻♂️ 🤷🏻♂️
@@SaturnSteve The problem is that early Mario Kart games were not great in terms of drifting controls, now that Mario Kart has evolved. Nintendo run out of ideas for F-zero, and thus no longer needs it. The good news is that there's an upcoming game called Aero GPX, it's basically GX.
It absolutely was. My hands were shaking when I beat Diamond Cup on Master difficulty, to then unlocking the tracks to purchase for the AX cup. Thanks for checking out the review!
Every once in a while I boot this game up and feel awe. Thinking that this game is now over 20 years old still gives me goosebumps; it aged like fine wine. I really don't get why Nintendo won't continue this franchise with a totally new installment
It really is a game that aged like fine wine, and gives me the same awe each time I fire this up. I wish Nintendo would at least remaster this for Switch to give more people a chance to experience this! Thanks for checking out the review!
This is still the best racing game ever made. Once mastered there is no need to slow down for any section of the game. In fact you can boost nonstop while hitting the yellow boosters and also doing lateral shifts off the track and back on as a speed boost. Every section is attacked with reckless abandon.
Happy owner of this game , sometimes i like to launch the game, run some replays or do some sneaking to remind old times. This game is a pure gem and never gets old.
No question that F-Zero X had an awesome soundtrack too, and the OG F-Zero art style still lives on now with F-Zero 99! F-Zero GX is still the quintessential experience for the franchise for me though. Thanks for checking out the review!
Thank you much appreciated that was helpful. I didn't have a clue about many of the things I could do. I'm new to this game I've heard of it but I've not played it up until recently. I played all the others (snes, gba & n64) This one still holds up today, such a fun game.
That exploding tunnel level in story mode was the most physically difficult gaming experience of my entire life. I remember my eyeballs stinging with tears dripping down my face by the end of every close attempt. Beating it on hard mode was an amazing feeling.
I never got to own this game when I was a kid and instead I had my grandmother rent it from blockbuster like a 100 times. Some time back I finally bought a copy and have been having an absolute blast.
That's a great memory to share! That's when you knew a game was special back then, where you always rented it before buying it. Thanks for checking out the review!
I need to revisit this game, and this review may have convinced me to do so. I never got to the AX cup, so hearing the music was a treat - and yes, this game is that hard before I get to the AX cup [I've slowly gotten better at this game over time]. I hope a new F-Zero game is made, with interesting customization, lore and track ideas. It is that possible, but until then GX will have to suffice.
It really is a demanding game (difficulty wise) to unlock everything the game offers, but immensely rewarding as well. I'll be curious to hear if you can unlock the AX Cup if you revisit it! I also wish a new F-Zero game would be made, but sadly Nintendo stated their focus is Mario Kart as their racing game to promote. Thanks for checking out the review man, and hope all is well!
Great video man! Brought back some good memz from when I was a kid playing with my brothers. And I had no idea about the unlockable cups/tracks! Obviously was never good enough to do master difficulty back then. Good work fam!
I was playing this for a while but didn't understand some of the mechanics you mention here. Such a fun game and the Aesthetic/maps are incredible. I also love Burnout 3, there are few games that can really make you feel like a speed demon. I will need to come back to this game some day and really master it.
Highly recommend revisiting this, as it's always a blast to play! Burnout 3 is another awesome game that I sunk so many hours into! Thanks for checking out the review!
Interesting coincidence that you released this video a mere few weeks before the reveal of F-Zero 99. With all the new people getting into F-Zero thanks to the new game, hopefully more people will become aware of F-Zero GX. Who knows, maybe Nintendo will remaster the game, or even make a new F-Zero in the same vein as GX. Only time will tell.
That definitely panned out quite well haha. I released this on the 20th anniversary release date for this game in North America, but I'm glad Nintendo released a new F-Zero game weeks later! I really hope they remaster this game! Thanks for checking out the review!
Admittingly this is an absolute masterpiece that I never really gave enough time because of how much it whipped my booty whenever I did try it out. Really loved this review since it's making me realize that I need to dive into it and give it a proper go even if it does make me humble the old country way. The tracks are so varied and beautiful and I always loved it when racing games have so much going on in their backgrounds. In a way, I can sort of see why they never made another FZero after this one because like, how do you top this?!
It's definitely a very challenging game, and glad the review encourages you to give it another go! The game's tracks really are masterfully crafted, and always thought they stood out aesthetically. Yeah, there's part of me that realizes that if they made a new one, how do you improve perfection? Thanks for checking out the review, and glad you enjoyed it man!
Funny to see this video was uploaded just a month ago. Expect a ton of new video views now that F-Zero 99 came out. I've been playing 99 for the past two days and it's great.
Yeah, there's no question that F-Zero 99's announcement has helped this video immensely (and very grateful for)! F-Zero 99 is a surprisingly addictive time too! Thanks for checking out the review!
I played this game as a kid when it came out, can agree with this review! Very solid game that stands the test of time. Wish I still had my copy, might have to buy one eventually or find at a garage sale. Thanks for the video!
Just to note, boosting past him in the last couple seconds isn't the only way to beat him. You can utilize snaking (set engine settings to max acceleration then spam quick turns - though keep in mind that this can cause repetitive motion injuries) or use shift boosts (driving off the cliff and then getting back on the road within a couple frames to get a massive speed boost) and Momentum Turbo Slides (initiate a sliding turn then let go of the throttle and strafe away from the turning direction).
been age since i last played but i dont remember having to boost past last second on VH...gets the curve right and clear.....only missions i rly struggle with are chapter 8 and 9..especially 8 on VH.....my setting was near max speed(i'd be 1 bar off from touching the entry into the last 2 "holes" on the right to keep some recovery from speed lost turning)
The fact on master all your opponents have max speed and max acceleration while you can only pick one or neither is understated. If you dont pick max speed youll never keep up, and if you make a mistake then its back to a snails pace. You have to play perfectly to win master
I read an article from an ex-Nintendo employee that said they'll never make a new f-zero because they dont want it to compete against mario kart, and that hurts my heart. Why cant we have both??
I heard the same thing, and that's just awful. I love Mario Kart and all, but I don't like it being the primary racing game where Nintendo won't bring back classic IPs.
I agree. Mario Kart and F-Zero are very different racing games. However, after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I do see the potential of either a remastered F-Zero GX or a new F-Zero game in general. Of course I being wishful, but I might as well keep rocking out F-Zero GX until that day happens.
@@mikeengland80 The problem is that early Mario Kart games were not great in terms of drifting controls, now that Mario Kart has evolved. Nintendo run out of ideas for F-zero, and thus no longer needs it. The good news is that there's an upcoming game called Aero GPX, it's basically GX.
For sure! I actually did an in-depth review for Kirby Air Ride on the channel a few months ago. Such a great game! Thanks for checking out this review!
At the end of the day, I honestly don't care how popular Mario Kart has become over the years, I will always think F-Zero is better. Even as a young child who grew up with the N64, I still preferred F-Zero X to Mario Kart 64 cuz to me MK just felt too casual for my liking. I liked flying at the speed of sound rather than throwing items at one another.
While I love the Mario Kart series, this game was by far the superior racing game choice for the GameCube. F-Zero X was also an amazing game that I put more hours into than Mario Kart 64 (which I also loved). The sense of speed in this series is exhilarating! Thanks for checking out the review!
Nice Video. id never been able to play 'GX' beyond normal, but im still loving the game. And, at the end of the video you mentioned 'gp legends' (which is my favorite) but miss Climax
Thank you man! Glad you're enjoying the game! Yeah, I did forget Climax...mainly since it was a Japanese exclusive lol. Really appreciate you checking out the review!
Honestly, the only things that haven't aged in this game well are the HUD resolution, 480p, and the animations in cutscenes. Considering how long 20 years is in the tech days, that is absolutely unbelievable. The gameplay, music, and fun have not aged a single day. The graphics are still great, colorful, and varied 20 years later. The variety in each track is absolutely insane from a gameplay standpoint. The content and unlockables, well, are still ahead even compared to now. What 50-dollar game nowadays has content like F-Zero GX? All those racers besides the main 4 would be paid microtransactions nowadays, absolute ripoff. Imagine you hear, here is a burger, oh wait you want it with meat? Pay the meat DLC, please. And the main thing, what other game requires this insane almost meditative concentration and this kind of speed? Seriously, none. Aero GPX comes close. Fast RMX is ok but even on hero mode you hug walls, and it does not even come close to the precise controls of GX. With Nagoshi left, I doubt Nintendo can make a new F-Zero and make it good. Just port GX on Switch with SSAA or MSAA, and higher resolution HUD, and that is it.
I do agree that I don’t think Nintendo can top this with a new installment, which is probably why they also won’t make a new one. But Nagoshi has expressed interest in working on this franchise again, so maybe there’s hope of some collab?
There’s an arcade in castleton, IN (near Indianapolis) that has FOUR AX cabinets. Four of them. According to the guy working there, it’s the only place in the world with four cabinets and they can all play together
Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, I'm aware the game is widescreen lol. I had already captured a majority of footage (hours worth) by the time I remembered that, and didn't have the time to redo all the capture in order to get this video out at the date I wanted to. That being said, there are actually over 70 GameCube games that apparently support native widescreen! Thanks again for checking out the review!
@@OskarXCI Not sarcastic, legit surprised here... SEGA really gave it their A game for this one... I'm kinda mad they basically never do it for Sonic Team.
You touched upon the sound design of the machine boosts, but didn't mention that the machines had unique boost sounds. The machines with A-rank boost had that extra oomph to it, especially the explosive sounding Night Thunder.
Pure coincidental haha. This video was launched intentionally on F-Zero GX's 20th anniversary in North America, but that worked out quite nicely lol! Thanks for checking out the review!
They really did after this release. Sure there's F-Zero 99...but that's not quite the level of awe as this was (and still is). Thanks for checking out the review!
@@GameCubeGalaxy with Mario kart 8 being the last main racing game on the switch this game being released it a new one would be nice to add some color to the racing genre GX was wayyyyy ahead of its time and Nintendo has no idea
It really is a masterpiece! Easily in my top 10 games of all-time, but easily my favorite racing game ever made! Thanks for checking out the review man!
**READ THIS COMMENT**
Hope you all enjoyed the review!
@GameCubeGalaxy Have you seen the F-Zero anime adaptation?
@@SuperFlashDriver That's a great memory to share man! Yeah, this whole console generation was super memorable, and I literally pictured being back at the stores seeing these games on the shelves through your comment. Thanks for checking out the review man!
@@kendonl.taylor5111 I have! F-Zero GP Legend was such a good show! I wish it would get a DVD box set release, cause I'd love to rewatch it.
F-Zero GX is a profound masterpiece of gaming.
This. 100%. Thanks for checking out the review!
It’s the best racing game ever made.
Didn't Nintendo themselves state that they couldn't figure out a sequel because GX was too perfect so there were no innovative enough ideas?
@@KooriGraywolf Something like that. As I understand it, they thought GX was fine game, but it's sales weren't especially great, so as a studio it's like, what do you do? You could attempt to do the same thing again except "better," but that won't guarantee sales. So I think that's why Nintendo feels they need to "innovate" the gameplay before just making another.
And it's all thanks to SEGA xD
SEGA does what Nintendont.
You're giving F-Zero more attention than Nintendo has in 20 years.
Haha someone has to! I really wish more people could experience this particular installment!
Poorly aged comment
Man this didn’t even make it 2 weeks without becoming irrelevant
Someone missed a Nintendo direct
@@jeremyp3116 someone made a comment well before the Nintendo direct happened
Coming from someone who grew up with this game back in 2003, you really put into perspective why this game is so amazing to this day and why F-Zero fans like us continue to play to today despite 20 years without a game.
Thank you man! That truly means a lot to hear! It really speaks volumes that 20 years later, and fans still love this game.
The older games are way better than the crap they make now
@@christiansoldier77 I think the reason for this is multifaceted.
Having a constant 60 FPS with 29 NPCs and THOSE graphical details in 2003 is beyond insane.
Haha right on! This was definitely a Nintendo game for a more core gamer market. It’s part of what makes it amazing honestly!
Sega does what Nintendont
It's pretty interesting that this and Melee were in the same console generation, the GameCube in general felt like an attempt at bringing back the people they lost to the PS1

This game is honestly one of the best candidates for a remake/remaster.
Couldn't agree more! Here's hoping that happens! Thanks for checking out the review!
Nintendo need to rehire Sega to do it, but sadly I don't think Nintendo liked getting egg on their face that Sega did a Nintendo franchise better than Nintendo ever could lol
if they do, I hope they keep the difficulty level. Nothing has felt as satisfying as beating story mode on very hard.
C'mon Nintendo. Just up the resolution to 16:9 1080p and I'll buy a Switch just for this game.

@@GameCubeGalaxy give gx the mario kart 8 treatment and deluxify it.
@@lightdeck8357
I honestly don't think Nintendo has the capability to deliver a remake of GX.
@@BlownMacTruck
I wasn't talking about Miyamoto's statement on adding new gameplay elements, I was looking at it from a technical perspective.

You would think, right?! I'm still holding out hope for this! Thanks for checking out the review!
Oh man imagine how quickly we would need to learn how to not be immediately killed by other players
That sound truly amazing! I REALLY need to try this out one day! Thanks for checking out the review!
Still playing it to this day. My favorite game ever made.
Right on man! Thanks for checking out the review!
Greatest arcade racer I've ever played. A few notes:
The game is a beauty to behold in 480p Progressive Scan at 60Hz.

Sega worked with Nintendo on GX so Sonic racing is your Fzero sequel
I remember when kid me went with my gramps into a Sears one day (instantly calling out how old I am), and while he looked for what he needed, I was free to look at the tech section. Needless to say, this store had the smallest collection of games I've ever seen to this day. But, there was one game on clearance for $10 that had someone on the cover that I recognized from Smash.
I'm still holding out hope for a remaster for this game! Here's hoping! Thanks for checking out the review!
Playing this in VR on the Dolphin emulator is flippin' nuts! You can actually look up on the loops and see where boosts are. It's a must try for any F-Zero or VR fans.
Okay, THIS I need to try for myself! I can only imagine F-Zero in VR!

This title made me feel so suppoerted and happy :,)
This is the only racing game (besides playing a lot of mario kart) that i got into for real and and almost completed everything on all dificulties. I made me push my limits as a player so much.
What a great game that deserves more praise and a sequel.
Haha glad to hear! It really was a racing game that demanded attention, but rewarded that attention to get better at it every step of the way. Thanks for checking out the review!
Finally somebody that is giving this absolute masterpiece of a game the attention it has deserved since the day it released.🔥❤️

Heck yeah man! Mission accomplished if it got you pumped to play it again! Master is BRUTAL, and not for the faint of heart haha. Thanks for checking out the review man, and glad you enjoyed it!
I have been waiting for the next F-Zero game since GX
You and me both! Thanks for checking out the review!
@@Nelsathis Oh awesome! Hope you enjoy that review!!
must i add: most of the AX characters are unlocked by beating chapters on the hardest difficulty (unless you want to get them through an AX cabinet)
-surprisingly, the final chapter on very hard is easier than the first chapter
-hidenori shoji is responsible for most of the ost and who knows what he could achieve now with the switch’s audio hardware (if nintendo realized how much people loved f zero)
-f zero also has an anime but follows the plot of GP legend and the japanese sub is better

This is still the best racing game ever made. Once mastered there is no need to slow down for any section of the game. In fact you can boost nonstop while hitting the yellow boosters and also doing lateral shifts off the track and back on as a speed boost. Every section is attacked with reckless abandon.
Glad you agree, and all well said! Thanks for checking out the review!

You forgot about the Rubberbanding. The only real way you can beat Goroh in the story mission is to Boost past him in the last 2 seconds of the race.
Valid point, there's a bit of rubberbanding for sure. Thanks for checking out the review!
100% facts. It's immensely rewarding completing Master considering how unfair it is. Thanks for checking out the review!
"Why cant we have both??"

One sells and the other don't.
@@FelOld I'd have to disagree with that. There's a large number of people that would love to see another f-zero released.

Trackmania is a good contender for a game that requires the same level of concentration and speed if you haven't tried it!
Some of the fonts used are distinctly of the era, but I agree.
