  • To those discerning few who refuse to settle: That perfect home you’ve been searching for is real. One that combines style, elegance, sophistication, space, modern convenience, proximity to everyday needs - in a top-rated school district, of course - and serenity to melt away life's pesky requirements in a setting of natural beauty. Wrapped up in an uncompromising, exquisite architectural form that simultaneously takes your breath away and yet feels familiar and comfortable, Dennis Blair’s “Schell House” ticks all the boxes on your Dream Home wish list. It’s a masterpiece symphony of form, materials and siting that offers endless opportunity for relaxation and entertainment. Cantilevered out over the terrain, set among towering oaks, hickory trees and prairie landscape, and adjacent to a 50-acre nature preserve, it’s a personal retreat from the surrounding world, hidden in plain sight and close to everything. This stunning residence must be seen in person to be truly appreciated.

    Now this is my kind of home. It puts the tacky glitzy gold drenched homes of the rich & famous to shame. Can you imagine what it would be like to sit in one of these rooms looking out of the window as a mist rolls in among the forest or watching the rain fall, each drop glistening on the leaves of the trees that surround the house or the sun as it casts rays through the foliage in the late afternoons? Or the peace & tranquillity of being surrounded by nature? Or seeing it lit up at night with the soft glow of candles? My idea of heaven without the ego trip. Thanks for the upload.

      In terms of the design period's zeitgeist, FLW and this architect came from vastly different situations.
      There were no antecedents of the magnitude that this architect enjoyed for FLW when he was developing the Praire Style that "shook" the world back then.
      This architect was privileged to have studied under FLW and was able to follow the concepts started there and expand and refine them.
      This house maybe "better" as a result of it's progenitors than Wright's, but without the example of Wright's work, I doubt if it would be likely he would have been able to create this beautiful residence.
      Also, tastes have developed to embrace and appreciate this language of design. When this was built, it wasn't considered anywhere as radical as FLW's when his were being built.
      You liked it "better" than FLW's "modern architecture" partly due to the factor of your being more comfortable and familiar with this evolution of style.
      And don't forget, this home was recently updated and "tweaked".
      I also like this home very much!
      Thanks for the posting.

    So knowing that this is a Frank Lloyd style house you could not film entering the house? One of his signature use of entrance ways has to have it constrained then as you walked through the foyer it opened up to a beautiful expanse with the fire place as the main feature.

    • @TheModernHomeShow
      @TheModernHomeShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While Dennis Blair did study with Frank Lloyd Wright briefly, this house wasn't designed by Wright, but by Blair. Blair very much enjoyed having his homes photographed. We simply didn't take a shot of us entering the house (although we could have without an issue). This house didn't have that same setup (entering in a low area to have a more grand space revealed afterward), likely because the Schells didn't want that (I would guess).

      It really isn't. The house was essentially rebuilt about 20 years ago, so all of the glass and insulation are to high-end modern era standards. Plus, the dual-zone HVAC system uses heat pumps rather than traditional A/C units, so they are efficient and keep the house very comfortable all year long (which is also helped, especially in the summer, by the generous overhangs provided by Mr. Blair's architecture.

When the sun hits the hallway with high windows, casting a percentage of darkness across the room; I would slip into the shade like Batman. After hours of putting on an attempt at his iconic husky voice while in the darkness and upon stepping out quickly changing to a high pitched voice with an English accent, I would finally draw the curtains. By this point I would have been alone for hours, my family and friends having given up after the third hour of my interchanging pitch and accent. Many beautiful elements, but he did not add that "sense of shelter" in each of the rooms that humans naturally crave - that feeling of personal protection, like sitting under a tree, or a child building a fort under table ... and that feeling of being hugged by your environment whether your sitting outside or in - something that Wright was a master of.

    • @TheModernHomeShow
      @TheModernHomeShow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Having been in the house many times, I respectfully disagree. It's not that it's not there, it's just that it's different than how Wright would have done it.

    • @ifthen4039
      @ifthen4039 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheModernHomeShow ---Thank you for your reply. When you say "It's not that it's not there," - the "it" that I was referring to was walls, half-walls of shelving perhaps, pillars, varied ceiling heights, etc. Those structural elements that give one that SENSE of protection within a space. The most blatant examples of that being absent in this home are the main living room and the outdoor seating area.
      There have been discussions of these design elements in a home as a basic human preference from a psychological perspective, in that it puts people at ease more than the wide open spaces. In the end, of course, one would have to actually live in a space to really know what they would prefer and feel most comfortable in on a daily basis.

    • @TheModernHomeShow
      @TheModernHomeShow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ifthen4039 - Yes, the "it" I was referring to was the sense of shelter based on where you are in the home. In the living room / media room, the ceiling is higher and there's more glass to make you feel as though you're a part of the nature outside. In the kitchen & dining areas, which are separated from the living room by the granite fireplace stack, the ceiling is a "medium" height and there's less glass, except to see toward the front in case visitors are coming. Otherwise, the only glass is to the south, looking out over the deck to a pond and the trees. In the bedrooms and lower level recreation areas, the ceilings are lower, giving you more of that feeling you're referring to. So again, while I understand what you're referring to, this house does it with zoning rather than by using elements within each space. You're correct that that sense of shelter is absent in the outdoor spaces in this house, however, that was by design as that's what the original owners wanted: To be connected to the home, but "out in the open". The west deck offers privacy as it's 'behind" the house, closest to the nature preserve, and the south deck offers entertaining space that's more welcoming as it's visible from and accessible from the front.

    That the home from ferris bueller??

    • @TheModernHomeShow
      @TheModernHomeShow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's not the same house, but the two homes are about 20 minutes from each other. The house in Ferris Bueller is known as the Ben Rose house (the "house" in the movie was actually the studio, not the home itself) and was designed by A. James Speyer. This house is the Schell House and was designed by Dennis Blair.
      Speyer was fond of using exposed steel I-beams in his construction, whereas Blair typically used stone and wood (although this house does have two steel I-beams to support the cantilevered Master Suite).

    The only problem is that a house like this only looks good when it's clean and not lived in. For that reason, it must have at least one servant, which makes it not a home but a statement of power.

    • @TheModernHomeShow
      @TheModernHomeShow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was friends with the owners for years before I helped them sell the house. The house always looked spectacular, regardless of whether it was at its most tidy or its most lived-in. But keep in mind that there are plenty of people who simply live an uncluttered lifestyle every day. This is often (but not always) the case with modern homes and the people who live in them. Part of the reason they like the clean lines and visual simplicity of design is because it fits with the way they like to live. The "worst" that I ever saw this house was with a few bins full of work papers on the built-in cabinets in the lower levels, and some normal work stuff on the desks in one of the bedrooms. It never made the house look any less amazing.

Base on sqf concret home 50 % concrete 50% window 750$/sqf. It is not easy before drawing to have an idea of budget. I like this stile mixe of big window + steel i like big window + concreate

    • @TheModernHomeShow
      @TheModernHomeShow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of it depends on where you're building, so there's no universal answer, unfortunately. My guess is that to build this house today in the same area, you'd be looking at probably $650 - $800 / sf. But if you're talking like something along the lines of homes by John Lautner such as the Elrod house in Palm Springs or the Sheats Goldstein home, you'd probably be talking about quite a bit more, due mostly to the concrete work which would require specialized labor that's very expensive.
