Incredible MCM Ranch in Winnetka by architect Don Erickson! Mid-Century Modern House Tour
Take a look a this amazing MCM / mid-century modern / Mid-Mod-Med architecture by Architect Don Erickson. Erickson was a Master Apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright and a personal friend of Mr. Wright's, often playing piano for Mr. & Mrs. Wright in their apartment at Taliesin. Erickson's designs are notable his use of natural light and for their grand scale and soaring volumes.
This home is relatively unique in Erickson's vast portfolio of modern homes in that it's one of the few that truly incorporated Mediterranean influences. Originally designed and built for photographer Richard Boyer in 1968, the home features signature Erickson elements including soaring beamed ceilings, brick floors, multiple fireplaces, many large windows, skylights, sunken living (and private) areas and much more.
The primary living spaces are wonderfully grand, and are set under a combination pitched / chalet roof featuring diamond skylights. The home is in mostly original and quite pristine condition. Very few changes have been made over the years, making this a rare, mostly unmodified example of Don Erickson's stunning architectural art. A master at combining light, views, privacy and nature, Erickson designed in a wonderful private garden area off of the sprawling, sunken bedroom wing, encapsulated within a beautiful, undulating brick privacy wall.
All main level spaces have vaulted, wood clad, beamed ceilings. Great house and video! Home may be a Grunsfeld but to be honest I have no idea. I lived in a Grunsfeld home in Bannockburn (a town over) for a few years and had similar styles. Cool video, nice job!
Thanks Danny. I doubt it's a Grunsfeld, though. The ceilings are too low and there's too much architectural detail that Grunsfeld typically shied away from. Plus, he generally preferred a different palette of materials. I always enjoy seeing a Grunsfeld home! There are closer ties to the styles of some of the other local architects such as Dennis Blair, William Deknatel, Edward Humrich, Schiller & Frank, Bud Binkley and Paul Schweikher, but unfortunately we just don't know for sure. Glad you enjoyed it!

THERES NO WAY SUCH A JAW DROPPING DROP DEAD GORGEOUS of a home EXISTS like like like no bap my mouth was literally hanging open watching this i was so dazed and hypnotized how beautifully detailed this home is makes u actually wonder what secrets or history this house is hiding considering theres no info who the architector was like they are hiding their identity from something or someone why is there sooo much privacy that this person might not want to disclose details on where they got the ideas from either way it definitely looks like something out of one them century like movies
I don't think the architect was hiding anything. Often the blueprints and info get lost over time. My clients weren't the original owners.

What a Gorgeous House. That Great room took my breath when it popped up! I love the brick floors and wood interior walls. My only concern is that the original baths and kitchen are no longer in the house.

I would utilise the artistic use of shadowing to my advantage. When the sun hits the hallway with high windows, casting a percentage of darkness across the room; I would slip into the shade like Batman. After hours of putting on an attempt at his iconic husky voice while in the darkness and upon stepping out quickly changing to a high pitched voice with an English accent, I would finally draw the curtains. By this point I would have been alone for hours, my family and friends having given up after the third hour of my interchanging pitch and accent. I would clench my fists, build up a criminal level of rage and destroy the room from the inside out.
But then you wouldn't be able to do all of that again!
