  • The exceptional Grade II-listed Ferrum House was designed by architect Jack Bonnington in the mid-1960s as his family home. Now, for the first time in its history, the immaculately kept house is available to purchase via The Modern House. Here, we take you inside and trace Bonnington's inspiration back to his time in the USA and the work of Mies van der Rohe. Visit bit.ly/3ustN77 for more info.

    This is absolute perfection where form meets function. Some will call it bland but it does exactly what a house should do without excessive ornamentation. I will also argue its dateless, timeless

    • @Tatokala
      @Tatokala 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its not timeless. For today`s Viewer it is been looking like style of the sixties.

      What amount of ornamentation is "excessive"? And what's wrong with ornamentation in the first place? All architectural styles from the dawn of man until the International Style embraced ornamentation because it's a form of art and decoration in and of itself.

    As an architect approaching retirement who worked in Southern California on a sensitive remodel of a Neutra house, I could not agree more with Bonnington. This is a beauty. Do not touch or alter a thing. It is a period piece of exemplary detailing... It really is special.

    Currently in the process of restoring a 1966 home and this gives me so much inspiration. I'm trying to keep everything as period accurate as possible, something I wish people cared about more when renovating older homes.

    I agree...I hope the new owners do not change the integrity of this design......
    You don't mess with a Masterpiece......

    I hope whoever buys it appreciates and holds on to every single detail. The fact that nothing has been altered since the 60s is incredible and it must stay that way. Unfortunately, there are people out there with enough money to buy it that would want to "modernize" it or "bring it into the 21st century". By that, they mean stripping out the beautiful kitchen and HiFi system and painting the brick white or covering it in plasterboard. I hope the listed status prevents this but I fear it only protects the overall appearance on the exterior rather than the details I've just mentioned. Even better, a museum or historical charity, even the National Trust, could protect it as they do for historical stately homes and castles.

      A prospective buyer should appreciate the design, inside and out. If they wish to modernise significantly, this house may not suit their needs in the first place. Instead, a recently or custom built house with all the latest appliances and facilities might prove the better option.
      Altering this modernist house will take away its uniqueness. Who would want that?

    Funny how modernist homes don’t quite harmonise with the English landscape for me. They suit warmer, dryer climates I feel

      I think I find British mid-century modernist houses so fascinating for precisely that reason - the fact that they look so futuristic, almost alien.

    It is indeed gorgeous, however I wonder if the combination of those overhangs and enormous redwoods, if the lower level would feel continually dark.

    • @lb003g0676
      @lb003g0676 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Probably the only thing I could possibly knock it for. Would look far better with an emphasis on Scandinavian furniture rather than all that ubiquitous Eames aluminium group tosh - it ubiquitous in the design world and in this particular interior, why are there so many!? The Møllers sit particularly well in such surroundings and I think some understated Mogensen designs would suit it far better. Not showy, not kitsch.

    So perfect compared to today's stark white boxes that try to capture this exquisite design. Modernism is so much more than just a white box- which is just an empty room. A white empty room is in no way modern in design.

    this all is great but lets not forget that it will require massive rennovation, from pipes to wires, not speaking of changing all windows to smth more insulative, etc etc. Its an OLD house not up to date technically at all.

    • @resolecca
      @resolecca 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sorry but some people like it exactly the way it is and i hope that's who buys it

    • @tatsianapalchekh5326
      @tatsianapalchekh5326 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@resolecca the way it is. and what way is that?? with old pipes, wires, lack of insulation, old cold windows? ppl like how it LOOKS and do not think about technical side. and its stupid to say: oh i hope they buy it and preserve it because they like it. it will be exactly the opposite. you need a buyer who likes it but REALIZES it needs upgrade while preserving exactly the same look. its insane amount of money. Otherwise, ppl who dont understand anything in technicality will buy it cause its so nice, then will realize that there are so many things which need to be modernized otherwise its incomeptible with modern living, and also will realize that to modernize and keep it same way costs twice as the house and they will start ripping it apart to renovate it cheaper.

    Sorry, but times have moved on! Who really wants to live in a museum??
    This (masterpiece) was probably SUPER MODERN in its day.
    But now it just looks worn and dated!
    And sadly as its Grade II-listed the new owner won't be able to change a damn thing!!
    Todays architects are building houses 1000x better than this!
    And I'm sure they will also stand the test of time far far better than this sad example.
