My grandfather was an architect and for retirement he designed himself a modern "treehouse" on the Oregon Coast on a cliff looking over the ocean. This reminds me so much of that. I miss that home it was so magical to visit there. The pacific northwest is magical, and it doesn't surprise me that another architect wanted to build a similar home for themselves. Great video :)
I’m fortunate, that is the way I wake in the mornings. I live in a tiny tiny one room home in the Vienna Woods and every morning is a glorious cacophony of birdsong and on windy days the constant sway of trees and the Sound of the wind moving through them.
I bought a block of land similar to this about 5 yrs ago (without the beach, just bush) Many aspects of this house is what I dream of building so I had a big smile on my face watching this. Waking up to the birds chirping, nestled amongst the trees, either doing yoga on the balcony or snuggled up on a comfortable hammock chair sipping coffee. I dream of that everyday. Bliss.
i can feel it, very deep vibes, gloomy , sad ,serenity, foggy, romance & mystic All mix together also when you see the window and look at the rain fallin with a cup of tea/coffee/wine thinking about mystery of life.
@@heisenberg9616 no I dont... Im really far away from understanding life, and Im pretty sure most people dont understand life either. What I do understand is this little film we´ve just watched
As soon as I heard this treehouse was facing south, it made me think about the sunlight that the house would get from morning until early afternoon :-). Places (esp. when it comes to getting an apartment in Korea) facing south are most preferred and it was great to hear about what Mr. Olson learned during his studies abroad. Thank you, Nowness, for all these amazing clips and narrations!
I clicked the video because I was interested in this style of house, and I was glad to hear that you studied in Korea. It's a very good location, a house facing south with mountains behind and water in front. Thank you for letting me see a nice house.
You have the results, of course the beautiful results. But then you have the architectural plans, the 3d model, the physics and engineering of this object. All of that is beautiful too. The irony is that we do not get paid for making all those things. We get paid for THINKING and solving architectural problems. Jim Olson gave an outstanding solution that deserves recognition. He had fun doing what he loves the most.
I love the moods you all create with the music, lighting and angles, but I really needed to see more of this space! It looked interesting from what I peeped.
Reminds me of when a coach hired a guy to come in and film our team for an instagram ad. Really artistic and creative shots but the stuff he was filming was just fucking trash.
Way too short. Why did you not show more of the inside? Also I think Bach was hijacked. Bach is so divine - anything you show with this music gets elevated to a heavenly level.
I am stunned by Jim's narrative about 'place'. While the house is interesting, the narrative about becoming part of nature whether you want to or not is the gift of this house. I know if I ever can find a home like this, it would be the completion of my journey in life and the full interior is a side note, though the few images of some of the spaces shows an extraordinary place to be. Most of it is outside where it should be.
I think a lot of people don’t understand the difference between architecture and interior design...also the fact that “this house is about looking out” which is a statement of the owner. And nowness is never about showing just the design of a dwelling.
Got to admit some of the scenes were really artsy, but as for the house itself and what your goal was I really think you nailed it. That house, sorry, your house in that setting is about as perfect as anyone could probably hope to get. WTG!
Too many extreme closeups...(for instance, a 1’ X 2’ spot).....can’t see anything that shows me wtf this place actually looks like. Need to zoom out a bit.
@@lisandroas9 I know what I can see. In this particular instance it was some poor choices of camera angles, closups and editing. Nothing to do with "arch"

Lovely layout... "It is natural for the heart and spirit to take pleasure and enjoyment in all things that show forth symmetry, harmony, and perfection. For instance: a beautiful house, a well designed garden, a symmetrical line,.." ~ Abdul-Baha, Baha'i Faith
Quite wonderful. Love the last video of Jim Olson walking along the water and what looks like a silhouette of a small dog observing in the foreground. Was it?
Points to ponder: The concept of the house is for the owner to view observe and live with nature. Asian houses faces south indirectly captures natural lights. I have seen structural w-flanges as columns and beams, cantilevered house on a cliff.
I love and have read snippets about this house, its origin and organic growth over the years I thought I was going to finally get a glimpse of the original nucleus
It's so futuristic, yet so atemporal. As my head also can see other posibilities, just for loving the architecture as an explorative issue, how would it tourn out if the color was incorporated in some technical spaces (like, yellow in the light green rooftop metal beam or using glass in all the facades… just's because you might be seen from the front window flying over the vegetation, like you were levitating.
For me it is the worst dream. I must have some dread of trees because all I could feel was suffocation ~ and instead of the beautiful music I could only hear what the noise of the trees must be like on a dark, windy night when trying to sleep. Give me light, freedom and calm.
That's feng shui and it's the ancient Chinese architecture idea. The house with back face to mountain and front face to the water is actually the science on how to find the best place for housing
Guybrush Threepwood Yeah but when you're an entitled "poor me" lazy millenial you don't even try to get ahead and blame the government for your misfortune. You'll never get through to those people. You are correct, affording that house is not hard at all if you work hard.
@Ace Degenerate Who said we all will get lake front property?. Definitely not 17. If I were 17 again I might have re-thought going through architecture school. Good try though, fuck off.
Lake front property in a secluded area is cheap. If you put in the work a person who WANTED TO could! Don't worry about me bud. Architecture is a passion. Aviation is where its at. The bgm and the colour tone undermines greatly how beautiful of a house this is

Like what everyone else here are saying, show the house, the house!
I wish a house like your house. It is all what I deeply need.
Way too short. Why did you not show more of the inside? Also I think Bach was hijacked. Bach is so divine - anything you show with this music gets elevated to a heavenly level.
Great atmosphere. Images of being inside the house on a rainy night, Miles Davis playing in the background and your pizza just arrived.
This is everyone's dream... The surroundings, the place and the house it was perfect.. Superb! 🏡 💯👌
Beautiful! Simple, nature is the star!
Houses that are housed by nature is the real definition of home.

My favorite part was the newspaper (what’s a newspaper?) blowing open and off. imperfect & “retro”.
Oliver Burke : yes but I don’t think it was recycled naturally organic paper and full of nasty print chemicals.

Architecture isn’t always about the grand scale it’s about the moments it creates
And it made the inside of the house look super boring. TBH the best part about this wasn't even the house, it was the property.
