Backyard teahouses for meditation, guest cottage, homeoffice

  • When a Silicon Valley executive asked architect Robert Swatt to design teahouses for his backyard, Swatt wasn't sure where to begin, but his client explained that he wanted one for tea, one for life and one for work.
Swatt created 8 or 9 models trying to determine the ideal shape for these tiny houses and finally settled on the simplest design. All glass with steel and concrete for support, each tea house floats over the landscape. Cantilevered in place, the buildings help preserve the delicate root systems of the surrounding native oaks.
Swatt says they've received many requests to recreate these nearly transparent structures, even as stand-alone tiny houses, and he says it could work as a modern prefab. "We could do something like this, if you keep it down to something you could drive on the highway and you could lift into place with a crane, you could probably do that and probably save a lot of money too by building it in a factory."

    These are breath-taking.
But, despite hearing it mentioned twice that organic debris on the skylights is welcomed as part of the ambiance, still, I notice that those yards and yards of glass are pristine-clean.
Definitely not a house for someone who hates washing windows, lol.

Most wealthy people have inherited it and have hidden their wealth offshore! It’s a talking point of the elite so the “regular” people stay hopeful, stay oblivious and don’t vote to raise taxes on the wealthy ... or vote them out! Not to mention the 100’s of thousands of people homeless in America. Btw the tea house are exquisite.

Very similar to Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House (1945-51) and Phillip Johnson's Glass House (1949). I like this a little better. Having the three functions in three separate buildings makes it a little more functional, and the concrete cores provide better grounding. The forested and bushy hillside landscape offers some shade and privacy. The Farnsworth House is so disdainful of the environment that it only reluctantly allows its feet to touch the ground. It also ignorantly sits on a flood plain, whereas it could easily have been sited on higher ground. It got flooded as a result. The Glass House sits on a manicured lawn, but appears uncomfortable doing so. Neither one offers enough privacy to actually live in. Obviously, without kitchen facilities this isn't a complete home, it's only a retreat from a larger home devoted to entertaining. Thus, it is more frankly honest about the impracticality of its minimalism for true residential use.

When he said "There is tea" and pointed at the shelves over the counter sink I thought, "No, there ARE teas." // The pavilions are a nice balance of concrete, steel and glass with unfinished wooden floors. I wish there had been some footage of them at night. Outside lighting in the trees? // Those skylights could have been designed to clean themselves with rain runoff. As they are now, how do they handle water collecting in their frames?

This is a Mies Van Der Rohe Glass House, pitched as traditional Japanese. The entire theme and philosophy is what Mies Van Der Rohe intended, using glass to blend into nature. It's strange that he doesn't give him credit. Also, I'd use it to park my 1968 convertible, Ferrari 250 GT California special.

    TEA HOUSE 2
I sleep easily, no conscience to trouble me, no worries to keep me awake. If I ache, I will ring for the masseuse. Sometimes I get tense, when my many underlings do not instantly anticipate my every move.
I sleep in this bed with various trophy wives, who I replace once they start to show some wear. I sleep in this bed and sometimes I sire offspring. The line must go on, I suppose. Only I don't think about them that much, except in a secondary narcissistic kind of way, but it is difficult to empathize with them, to contemplate their lives and futures. I suppose I must father several, because competition will be increasingly difficult in the future, and not all of them will make the cut, most will eventually fall off this island of wealth I have built.
This is just a simple tea house. Just a bed. Just a soaking tub. Just a shower and toilet and probably bidet. Just a tea house more luxurious than 99.9% of the homes in the first world. Tea house are to contemplate what is beautiful in nature. The cult of the market that has served me so well is destroying nature, best to have glass on all four sides, even for when you sleep. Contemplate it while you can, while it's still here.

    TEA HOUSE 3
A tea house for work. Oxymoronic? Well, I don't actually get my hands dirty, not physically. Meditation is all well and good, nature is pretty enough, but these aren't the sort of foci that allow you to build improved tea houses are they? We sit at my table, see how we have recycled the spare building materials, and we determine ways to crush, control and dominate as many other people as possible, because that is how wealth is built. You can't have glass tea houses without putting other people out of their homes.
You can't own nature without destroying nature. The play of the leaf shadows on the walls keeps me mentally refreshed.
But I'm going to have to do something about the blood and feathers on the glass.

Ironic that these wonderful structures are designed to blend into the natural surroundings... and how they 'disappear into the background'... with no mention of the birds that will die or have already died as a result of the 'invisible' exterior walls. Perhaps there should've been a burial moat dug out along the perimeter... but for sure, the sound of birds smacking against the indiscernible panes of glass can't be conducive to meditation! Just saying, the nod that the architect gives to 'nature', in light of this certain contradiction, rings hollow with such disregard to it.

There are a few elements I would want to change if this were my place. Get rid of the baseboard heaters and replace it with a radiant system in the floor and possible both concrete walls. The electrical, change the white screwless decors devices to gray and relocating them to be more hidden unlike the one 18” above the desk in the first tea house. Hide the conduit entering the concrete upright on the exterior. Change the switching to a single 5-button Radio RA2 device at the entrance and use your smart phone or device to control the lighting loads. Also, what are those ceiling light fixtures? Are they a line voltage MR16 lamp, or are they low voltage LED?

Architectural schools should have a one or two-semester course named "Glass Houses" :) The glass houses had been brought into the world of architecture in the 50's and they will never leave the face of the earth as far as we live there. So, better educate the creators and the builders to be as good as possible in dealing with that delicate architectural assignment :)

Nothing was lost on the client. The architect emphasizes @2:41 that it was not executed as a "Teahouse" in the traditional sense. The term--in this context--is meant more as a placeholder to describe the general use and feel of the structure that the owner was striving towards: a place for meditation or savoring both tea and nature.

@@eliakimbenishchayil More in the Andes. I'm half Inca indigenous & Colombian. Villavicencio more exactly, west of Bogota :) Sorry about your ex wife, hope things will get better between both of you.
      All the best

For me to do this I'd need the windows to have an electronic dimming film to make it transparent to opaque like a window in a Boeing 787. Or Motorized ceiling retracting window shade/blind. Aesthetically I think the Shades/Blinds would look nicer but for space saving the dimming film/gel whatever fits the bill nicer. I personally would choose either one what ever my contractor suggested but the idea of multiple "tea" houses for specific reasons is brilliant and I'm sure it could work on flattish land too. Each house could be on it's own solar system making it easier to work with, and if one house needed extra it could draw from the unused power of the other houses. Water and sewage would just require the water to split off to the houses.

Surely he did not think about birds welfare with those windows.

Interesting comment . In New Zealand our beautiful pigeon is endangered and one factor is flying into windows .Anyone know of a solution .

I would like one for Christmas. Or my birthday. Or just because I could afford one. Which I can't.😔
I often wonder if those who can afford to realize their dreams are ever truly grateful, every day for what they have.🤔

I'd be happy with a Househouse. Dang some folks got houses for 'tea'??? Silicone Valley money huh... must be nice.

In the beginning, I was turned off because I thought the floor had cracks open to the ground below, but then saw a baseboard heater under the desk and realized this was not the case. The skylight above was sublime. Really nice spaces.

if prefab off-site...perhaps using shipping containers, or sized like containers so moving up and down the highway would be easy, and permit-free (for over-sized loads).
