    The Stahl House aka Case Study House 22 is an absolute masterpiece in modern architecture. With a minimalistic design, made of industrial materials and placed on a spectaculair location: the house was groundbreaking when it was designed in 1960. Because it was used in many photoshoots and movies, it became the ultimate Californian Poolhouse. Although very different than the designs by John Lautner, I was always fascinated by this house. I made a complete video showing the history, construction and walkthrough of the house.

      Agreed! Jop, you're getting good at this. As a residential designer it's great to see the details in plan and picture. By showing us the site, designer, client, patron, budget, time period and fashion you've taught us a history of how and why these decisions are made and given us standards to enrich the craft and challenge our future works. Thank you.

    I took a rare public tour of the CaseStudyHouse No. 22 ("Stahl House") on December 27, 2009 -- almost fourteen years ago! It was like a dream, and an architectural icon. Because of the Hollywood Hills neighborhood and limited street parking intermittent tours have to be limited to 12-15 people as I recall, and can't be publicly advertised. Every inch of space is limited so it's really for show only -- but what a show!

      Yes it's wonderfull to visit the house, I did in 2015. The house is always smaller than it looks, but it's design is amazing.

    Have you ever heard of "Jim Walter Homes" he was a famous builder in the 1960s and 1970s. My family has a home built by "Jim Walter Homes" It was built in 1960. The name of our house is "The Country Squire" I love the family home. It was built with a basement. One of these days when I win the lottery, I'm going to have that same house built for myself. A simple but a lovely house it is. Our home sits in Villa Rica, Georgia and is occupied by my mama and brother. -Melvin - Saturday, November 11, 2023 - Colorado Springs, Colorado - 1:30 PM

      Yes, the house is a masterpiece. Simplicity and geometry are the best words to design the quality of the design. Much different than the works of my favorite architect Lautner, but still I love it.

    THE MOST breathtaking, unique, and amazing home in the world. And it makes my innards turn to jelly just seeing how high it is, and how it has no guard rails anywhere! 😫 I was actually surprised at the square footage, I really thought it was only about 1,200 SF from the looks of it. Clean, streamlined, minimal...it's not the coziest home around, but probably the most famous and most photographed home in the world. Simply stunning all around!

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I do agree with you: not coziest but still one of the most visual breathtaking homes of all time. The children who lived there had to were life jackets in case they would fell in the pool. The hillside is steep, but not so steep that it becomes life dangerous when you walk over the edge of the terrace, so in that case it still is safe.

    So many of the most beautiful buildings all have large roof overhangs.
    These overhangs add beauty and protection for doors, windows, and siding from rain and sun damage.
    Water is the enemy of buildings.

    First - awesome video. Again. Second - the unreal timing of the Stahl's to buy and build where they did. I can't imagine what the land alone that the house sits on would costs today. Unfortunately, there are no more of these hidden gems of land in California any where. You have to sell your soul to afford a house for a family of four in CA. But, your videos keep me dreaming that maybe one day we can afford the move from Chicago to gorgeous SoCal.

      Yes. I see Lautner as "the architect's architect"! He was very much about original design, and celebrating the curve. I think architects such as Koenig and Neutra had economy in mind and the simplicity and basic elegance of of materials, and angular perspective, at least where domestic architecture was concerned. Just a different focus.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@KerrieRedgate Very well spoken of you! Cost effective and simplicit is the best way to describe Neutra and Koenig. I love there work and maybe I prefer living in a Koenig or Neutra house over a Lautner home. But if I would have to make several videos about all the houses by Neutra and Koenig, it would be very repetitive to make all those similar videos. That's what I love so much about Lautner, each work is different so each video is also a new adventure to make! So ''Yes'' indeed the ''architect's architect''!

      @@SuperJobbel Haha, I'm gald you have a sense of humor, as it's becoming rare nowadays.
      Your English is fine, but yeah, the "toilet" room is just referred to as the bathroom. The word "toilet" actually refers specifically to the thing you sit on, not the room as a whole. "Toilet" is actually a bit crude, especially when discussing high-class housing, LOL. "Commode" might be a better term.
      It reminds me of an old Benny Hill skit, wherein an interviewer suggests to the interviewee (Hill) that a better word for "manure" would be "fertilizer", when the little old guy standing next to them points out that it took the interviewee (Hill) two years to learn to call it "manure". Maybe you have to see it to get the humor.
      As for "dangerous-looking part of the house", it just sounds a bit funny. Nothing wrong with saying that, as it does indeed look dangerous. I had to listen to it twice, because at first I thought you just said, "dangerous part of the house" which would really have been funny.

    That's amazing Stahl came up with the design? Koenig is always given all the credit. I have never seen this before. Stahl was the architect.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, no not exactly,.... Stahl did the floorplan, the basic L shape. Koenig did design the construction, he did all the difficult calcilations. He chose for steel instead of wood as Stahl had imagined. And he simplified Stahl design, which would be otherwise to expensive to buolt. It's not fair the call Stahl the architect. Koenig did the most work. But indeed Stahl partly deserves credit for co-designing the house.

    • @ryanjohnson8659
      @ryanjohnson8659 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SuperJobbel I believe Koenig didn't solve the difficult structural engineering. He hired a father and son team. Koenig used them a number of times for turning Koenig's drawing into structurally feasible solutions. There are a couple journalistic articles from their interviews of the engineering they did for Koenig. The interesting thing is if Stahl did the original design, and Koenig hired the structural engineers, then he doesn't get as much credit for the design or structural solution as he should. Stahl should get a lot more notoriety. Stahl was an artistic sign painter. Your video shows he was not just the inspiration behind the Stahl House, but a legitimate co-designer, if not the core-designer of the Stahl House.

    • @SuperJobbel

    Still laughing about the toilet in the green area of the L ... the whole house looks so modern and open, white colored walls or wood and mirror panels or stone panels and then you see the toilet and it looks like it was stolen from grandma's house. Hihihi, the toilet or sanitary cubicle for the children fits in much better.
    I would have changed a few things about the design myself. The two concrete bridges over the pool bother me the most; I would have constructed them at ground level with the terrace so that you can easily reach the kitchen with heavy crates of drinks, for example.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! Haha... yes I agree with you: the toilet looks very dated and not in style with the rest of the house. About the bridges: Today air condition is much better so they are not necessary any more, back in the days the pool had to reach to the bedroom windows in order to cool them. So it was a good solution back then.... today every archtitect would indeed remove the bridge and expand the terrace. First of all, this house is an icon of modern art, no doubt about it. Buuut, as a living space it has its flaws. For example I've always wondered about the temperature of the bedrooms in July, at noon. Because without cross ventilation (the facade towards the road is closed), with that roof radiating all the power of the heat of the sun and with no AC...
    I bet the bathroom of the kids must have been hell in the summers of their youth 😅🥵

      Yes it has flaws, but keep in mind it's a house that is 60 years old. For its time it was really comfortable to live in. The lack of curb appeal is more than made up for by the more well-known views in the back of the house. I agree with you that the walk throug one bedroom to enter the 2nd bedroom is a problem. A corridor in the back from the walkin closet was possible but than the master bedroom would become very small.

    I would lose the fireplace and replace it with a 60s looking retro style wood burning stove. That huge box with the rocks would be replaced with a small stovepipe. This would open up the view, there would be much more heat, and it would look like it was always there. Could be custom made. Not only does the big box block the view, the rock doesn’t seem to fit with the modern steel and glass. I’d go for a steel and glass stove.

      well, you're not the only one who dislikes the rockstone firebox, based on the comments there's a lot of criticism on it: so I think you have a good point. It's indeed somewhat dissonant with the rest of the house..

    Ultimate bachelor pad, even if originally built for a family. Amazing that this was considered a middle class house and could be attained by the middle class...back then California had plenty of land...what you have in abundance is valued the least...could never happen now. The wealth of the family evidenced by the very modest '55 Ford wagon, and later by the drab minivan. I assume there must be some insulation sandwiched in that metal roof.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes there's a layer of isolation materials placed over the metal roof. The house was cheap to buitl in 1950's, as was the price of the ground in the time. The three children of the Stahl family had multiple offers to sell he house, the latest offer was $20 million. Still they don't want to sell it and they earn a lot of money by renting the house for photo/film shoots and to allow paid tours.

      Accounted for inflation 50.000 is 600.000 in todays money. That is still unaccessable for most people, but by no means a house only for rich people. I would say it's price was in 1960 on the top of the average market. Maybe was it only slightly above average: still it was rather cheap for a house with a pool.@@justthink5854

    arch/client wet dream. i would have made a fire place box, and just a steel pipe flue or just use the stl structure and not cover it with stone. how do they cool this place?? the L and pool shapes work wonderfully with each other. with bed/bath 2 i would have made the master smaller and put a jack and jill bathroom across the back, and made 2 small bedrooms with clo between thus making a 3 bed 2.5 bath home. the master is needlessly big. yes the kids would still have to go outside to get to the kitchen/dine/living

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Originaly the house had no airconditioning: the place was cooled by the wind that streams through the open windows/doors, the house is located high on the hills so there is mostly a lot of wind. Also the water of the pool cooled it.
      - Yes, maybe a corridor in the back would have made the 2nd bedroom more accesible, but the masterbedroom would have been much smaller.
      - yes, A firebox instead of a stone fireplace would have been more in style with the rest of the house.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The reason why the used 4'' beams for the floorframe has to do with the view over hte landscape. Thicker beams would have spoil a view outside. By placing multiple thinner beams you an have beautiful windows with unbroken panorama's. This makes the house very transparant.

      The pool cools the house, as well as the cantileverd roof that creates shadow and the sliding doros the allows fresh winds breeze throug the house. So cooling is not a problem. And the house is located in California, so heating is neither a problem.
