  • Finally another YJ video! I know its been a while but the wait has been worth it for how this cage turned out. I can finally say i have a custom roll cage, and to top it off i built it myself. It may have taken forever but I'm extremely happy with how it turned out. Let me know what you guys think and if theres anything important i forgot to do. This experience was a massive learning curve but I'm glad I tackled the job myself and have a final product that is even better than I visioned in my head. Huge shoutout to all my friends that came over to give me a hand and to let me borrow tools. Make sure to show so love to those guys:

    Dude... I've been there many times and feel your pain! Cool to see someone share the mistakes with the process. Cage looks good.

      Hahaha I’m glad someone can relate 😂 but it comes with the learning curve and I wanted to show that mistakes will happen (multiple times) but just gotta keep working through it and everything will come together. Thank you for watching and the support 🍻

    So, here is how I bend odd bends with odd copes:
    1. use a piece of brake line, copper line or something similar to work out my bends, length and angles. the tricky part is the line needs to be in the center of where your tube needs to end up. Measure your die radius as well. for example if the die radius is 6" and you're bending 1/4" line, you need to wrap it around something with a 5 7/8" radius otherwise your bends in the cage tube come out wrong.
    2. mark the start and stop of each bend on the brake line then flatten it out dead straight. do a test bend in your tube bender and figure out where it starts bending the tube and mark it. I will usually just add 2" to either end of the tube for the notch, 3 inches or more if its a really steep notch like on your c-b pillar connector tube on the c pillar. transfer the measurements and bend the tube up. having the start and stop from the brake line allows a bit of adaptability on how you bend it. I've done parts with 4+ bends that had to be perfect this way.
    3. notch accordingly. make sure you know how much you added to the ends of the tube. this makes it much, much easier to cut off the correct amount and with it mocked up with brake line, you know when the notches are done, it will fit. don't be afraid to wedge the tube in something and tweak the bend a few degrees to fine tune it. truck receiver hitches work well for this. 1.75" .120 wall bends surprisingly easy.
    the other option (and likely what I would have done with your seat belt bar) would be to do the math on it to calculate the length. a bit of trig would work out the bend positions super easy on a bar with two bends and a known width. just assume the tube will shrink and stretch equal amounts on the bend, it will get you in the ballpark. they tend to stretch a bit, but that just makes the ends a bit longer anyway.

      Holy crap that is some awesome information. Thank you very much for taking the time to type all of that up. Lots of good tips and tricks I’ll definitely have to try and implement next time I’m messing with tube. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge because I’m sure it will help others as well. Thank you again and appreciate you watching and supporting the channel 🍻

    Nice work! I dig the look of the cage and the "X" bar in the back.
    From someone who's never done it before building a full cage can seem pretty intimidating but you did a great job!

      @altered_life  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really appreciate that! It was definitely intimidating and probably why it took me so long because of the fear of screwing it up. Taking my time and going slow I feel definitely paid off. Thank you for watching!

    Get yourself a license for Bend-Tech. I like Bend-Tech Pro to design full assemblies, but even just the basic version (EZ) will let you map out the tube with bends and it'll spit out the measurements, bend angle, plane, everything. Saves TONS of tube over a few projects. Pro also includes a program to print out notch templates to make it REALLY easy to get good fitup.

    • @altered_life
      @altered_life  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve heard great things about Bend-tech. I considered looking into it but then kinda just jumped into the cage build. I think for future projects I’m going to actually sit down and plan it out and use programs like that to help me. I’ve dabbled with Fusion 360 and it can do some of the features that bend tech can when designing cages. Thanks for the suggestion and thank you for watching!

    Good weight for such a strong frame. I have a standard YJ on 33 wheels with a winch of 1380 (3042 lb) kg .

    • @altered_life

    YAY, less close-up face and less talking. Except it was almost all close-up face and talking. But salute for not giving up with a crappy bar. What you ended up with is great!
    I like Sam;s channel, I found you through him.
    It seems odd to have that much side-to-side difference in weight.

    • @altered_life
      @altered_life  ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate you checking my channel out. That Bar kicked my ass and was mostly the reason it was talking and face shots lol. For some reason I feel need to explain things and it causes me to talk to much 😂 I gotta work on that lol. The weight issue I’ll have to delve in more as I start to get it more complete and play around with placement of parts in the Jeep to balance it out. Thank you for watching!
