Does anyone know what the qualifications are of the coin graders? What is it that makes the coin graders professionals in accurately grading coins and currency?
Restoration, dipping, cleaning? Our Number One Grading Company will happily do all of this for you at the right price which, in itself, raises many questions in my mind about the integrity of the grading industry.
If a coin has something unnatural on the surface and it can be removed without harming the struck surface, as from the mint, then it should be restored by removing said "unnatural", that is all professionals do. It's not the same as cleaning the original struck surface off a coin or causing a rub that breaks the plain of the original surface.
@CoinHELPu I think you may have covered it before. I'm not sure of how in depth but would be great to see a video covering the cleaning process or restoration process from the grading companies.
I wonder if a coin is restored to its natural beauty how it compares to one that is original and taken care of over these decades when it comes to selling. I would think a restored coin would be less. Would love a video on it as well.
Restoration is fixing...do PCGS state the coin is restored? If not then how come if PCGS clean a coin they don't mark it cleaned,? If you send in a cleaned coin and pay for restoration do they mark it cleaned still? Like you said, it all smells a bit whiffy to me.
Over the years, I have added a lot of beautiful coins to my collection. None of them have been certified by any grading service because I refuse to pay the premium to have them "blessed" as being a certain grade. That's allowed me to buy a lot more coins than I would have otherwise. Some of them are in XF condition but are just as stunning to look at as my BU coins because of their toning. Yes, the XF coins have more "wear," but to me they are gorgeous! - Great video Daniel.
I quit PCGS when my last 2 submissions came back as cleaned and graded low, when they came straight out of a mint set and have never seen any chemicals. The tint usually comes from being dipped in Acetone.
Ahh yes. The misnomer of a coin being 'dipped' and as such 'cleaned' only applies if the 'dipper' or 'cleaner' was not a paid grading service. For that matter, the assignment of the term 'Cleaned' as a grade assignment is based, in some cases such as Daniels example, on an 'opinion' and 'opinions' are subject to many variables or which may or may not be true. I have personally observed many high grade coins where, upon inspection, the only reasonable response amounts to "What were the graders thinking? Or NOT thinking?" But, I digress. I have personally been responded to my question on a low grade coin that the coin in question had a 'haze' which kept what I thought was an MS67/68 coin down to an MS-65+. Until, that is, the coin had been professionally 'cleaned'? Essentially, coin grading is a roll of the dice where the dice is loaded with 'opinion'.
You should not be seeing a "tint" after dipping in acetone? Do you mean the haze you get from leaving a coin too long in an acid dip like E-Zest? Because if your acetone is leaving a haze, then it's contaminated. Never reuse acetone. Throw it out after every coin. You can get rid of the haze with more clean acetone.
Shouldn't these grading companies justify their grade on the coin (or banknote)? In the last show I was at, a few of us (and the dealer) were staring at a note wondering "How the heck did they come up with that grade"? Maybe there's just a big dartboard in the office somewhere... 🤣
Thanks for sharing these beautiful coins. The quality of a coin is in the eye of the beholder and these are coins that i believe would add incredible examples to someones collection.
I was a newbie to coin grading back in 2020 from coins I collected with my Grandmother 45+ years prior. I sent a Trade Dollar in that came back details env damage and about 2 years later sent back (in the holder) for restoration services. It came back with details cleaned and didn't look like PCGS did anything. LOL actually looks like it had/has tape on the surface - bet Daniel could have made it look nice. Thanks for the education.
First go around was labeled Genuine Env Damage-XF Detail after sent back to PCGS in the holder with restoration submission it came back Genuine 92 Cleaned-XF Detail the sad or funny part is a professional coin photographer friend of mine saw no difference in the raw, first submission, and restoration submission. I was disappointed in PCGS.
I have to agree with you Daniel . When " grading coins " at PCGS/ NGC ect . just how much time is spent by the grader(s) ? Seems ta me they go over so many coins that NOW get a " high grade " MS70/ PR70 . I remember when they only gave these grads out for a very few ( Silver Eagles ) out of a full box (500) only a few had PR/ MS 70 grades . 5/6 % . the rest were " 69s ). I just don't know why , when now this is not the case . For most any grade . Thanks fer yer videos , keeping us informed . Tom Daytona Beach , FL 9, Mat 2024 .
On the 1857 flying eagle there appears to be a cleaned spot between the "57" and bottom of the eagle. Looks like maybe a wipe from a Q-tip t remove a spot. At the 3:43 mark in the video you can see it pretty good.
Capped bust half submission about a year ago. 6 out of 8 straight grade. This year’s capped bust submission. 2 out of 8 straight grade. I think new CAC grades have migrated others to grade tougher.
Seems like there's so many videos with people not agreeing with how these grading companies grade or judge coins. I mean we all agree it is subjective in the first place, so I asked what is the point of even giving these companies any power over what coins are graded what etc etc.. just a fact you can keep sending the same coin in and getting different grades depending on who or what day in mood the so-called Professional Coin grader is in. It's subjective it really seems like a scam in its own way
I am only showing a small part of what I send off for grading, I agree with most of the grades I get. So that is what you're seeing online, either the bad apple grading or someone who's not good at grading getting worse grades than they hoped.
So if you pay the grading company to " restore " a coin then it is not cleaned ? Kind of "pay us to clean and then it's not cleaned" ? It's a joke ! In a way they are controlling the coin market because they get to pick the winners and losers. Like anything from cars to cameras. A cleaned or completely restored item is taken at face value. Does it look nice or not? Who in their right mind thinks that a 150 year old coin never got wet or was never wiped off with a cloth? I simply ask that coins get graded based on appearance and not a guess as to whether a coin has been cleaned or not because we all know now that a whole heck of a lot of clean coins get graded. The coin graders have been tested and they have FAILED. As always, great videos!
No, that's not how it works. Coins can be cleaned, using certain methods and knowing which coins will benefit or can be restored, without harshly cleaning by removing the original striking layer.
@@CoinHELPu Sounds great if they were right all the time, but they are not. You and many other great TH-camrs have featured videos showing grading screw ups. Those videos have taken away most all of my confidence in ever paying to have a coin graded unless it’s something really special.
What grade is UNC detail, I was watching another video NGC,PCGS and annex went back to grading coins like they did in the 1980's. To tough grading standards. I think they should stick to an universal grading standards for all coins.
Personally, I don't submit anything if something about a coin bothers me as a collector or cannot be rectified with conservation. I do very well with it. I particularly like the new approach of CACG to act fully in the interests of all collectors and to brand the coins if there is even the slightest suspicion that something is wrong with the coin, instead of looking for explanations as to why this coin should have been graded this way or that. We should work on our own ego, that we don't want to have our wishes and primary ideas fulfilled, but submit something that 100 out of 100 collectors would agree with.
This isn’t about ego, problem comes coins sell better in a holder with a net grade. Also, no such thing as a 100% agreement on any coin, that is why grading companies are 80% consistent at best. CAC isn’t all that either.
Nice couns Daniel. Hard to see PCGS problems with these coins ? In your hands i trust your opinion/grading. If you sent to be restored, would that be noted on the slab when you got back from PCGS? I.E. - 1858 1c XF Restored. ??
They must save a lot of time and money on grading coins by calling stuff cleaned. I paid you to grade it. If it's cleaned, label it cleaned, but give me the number grade that I paid for. Not all unc details are the same. So why do they label them all the same? Saves time and money. All I can think of. ANACS, the "budget brand" grades them just fine and gives numerical grades for details coins. I swear if they just changed up their holders to something more professional looking, and then did one of these goofy registry set things that's just basically pokemon-go for baby boomers... they'd be a top competitor. People love a nice gimmick, and ANACS doesn't really have any. Their "gimmick" is certifying more varieties and helping you get accurate grades for the lowest price possible with their promotional offers at shows and whatnot. Who wants that when you can have a virtual sticky star badge on the PCGS app that reminds you how obedient of a consumer you've been to them. That's value for money if you ask me. 😂

Maybe you got lucky and some of the new staff, got the privilege of grading your set. Lol. I feel your pain. That's an injustice, It's time for NGC to step in and put them in their place.
It's a shame that everyone puts such a value on these grading companies. Your coins are very beautiful but lose value because they are labeled as cleaned.
Good Morning Daniel. I am still waiting for you to put up some flying cent and Indian Head cent. I bid on a couple but was outbid. I will call you next week after I get paid.
Have no interest in slabbed coins. I figure I can grade as well as the next guy on coins I'm buying. Collector has to know what he's looking at. Lots of high grade 64-65 look absolutely terrible anyway, spots, streaks etc. Rather have a raw high end problem free AU or a nice brown Unc.
What is difference if you pay them to clean Or you clean. Cause didn't pay them to clean You get thumbs down. Should be able to clean your coins to show their beauty Not pay them to do so
I like the 3 cent nickel. The die clash just adds interest to the coin. I already have a nice one from you with a straight grade. Otherwise, I'd put it in my set.
Maybe I didn't clean it properly. Dan, You clean more coins then my house cleaner cleans houses. I'd never buy a coin from you lol You always talk about how you clean coins. And you always get screwed on your buys. lol
Hi Daniel, can you tell me why suddenly junk silver is being called constitutional silver? Been collecting for over 60 years and never heard this term before. Id is some sort of MAGA terminology?
You should send the quarter eagle to CAC and have them grade it. I think that PCGS dropped the ball on that coin. The details are striking. It might be worth a second opinion.
There always will be an extremely high probability, backed up by decades of visual proof and affirmation, that a patina/halo develops on copper/brass coins from the oils in human hands/fingers. That achievement is not "cleaning" and TPGC 'graders' know this to be fact, yet unabashedly ascribe "cleaned" on a whim, like declaring the deepest depth of a lake by only focusing on its surface.
I'd lightly hand clean those flying eagles with baking soda IF they're worth less than $20. I don't have many coins I won't clean. Now I'm ready for the comments 😂

It's a shame that everyone puts such a value on these grading companies. Your coins are very beautiful but lose value because they are labeled as cleaned.
ALL of those coins look very nice! the last one is at least AU details.
Good Morning Daniel. I am still waiting for you to put up some flying cent and Indian Head cent. I bid on a couple but was outbid. I will call you next week after I get paid.
I did put up Flying Eagles yesterday, I don't know how many sold but they where up on the site.
Hello friend,i have some old coin Philippines and US coins ,and from other country ii have 1903 ten centavo 1904 1907 quarter dollar
Getting coins is not only very expensive....you can't trust them either !!! Waste of money
Good morning Daniel. I in MD have cent 1944 D , 1957 . $1 -2000 gold .
The first two coins were beautiful.
Plane wrong on the corner
May have gotten those grades because you used vouchers instead of paying for them ….. but they are beautiful coins thank you for sharing
That’s not how it works.
I'm sick
No, doesn't look cleaned, but is a very nice coin
In front of the nose
Seems like pcgs is trying to be strict like cac which might ruin the hobby
No, I knew these would more than likely get this designation. Just hopeful thinking on my part.
Maybe I didn't clean it properly. Dan, You clean more coins then my house cleaner cleans houses. I'd never buy a coin from you lol You always talk about how you clean coins. And you always get screwed on your buys. lol
Crack out and send to NGC. Make for a good video.
Hi Daniel, can you tell me why suddenly junk silver is being called constitutional silver? Been collecting for over 60 years and never heard this term before. Id is some sort of MAGA terminology?
Because it's the money as described in our Constitution, read this deanclancy.com/the-constitutions-seven-money-clauses/
You should send the quarter eagle to CAC and have them grade it. I think that PCGS dropped the ball on that coin. The details are striking. It might be worth a second opinion.
Maybe these grading companies have changed their hiring practices like the government..dunno. It is frustrating though.
That wasn't mint luster on the 25 cent piece.
Yes it was, you don’t get that kind of luster from smoothing a coin. I should know, I know plenty of coin doctors and their techniques.
Look in the left field next to liberty. There's lustre that's very visible.
All you do is whine
And you act like you know everything about coins and nobody else does
this is why i don't grade my own coins i don't have the eye for it. i really don't envy the people that grade coins for a living
My opinion on PCGS is not good. I’ve seen a lot of frustration about coins that came back from them
I'd lightly hand clean those flying eagles with baking soda IF they're worth less than $20. I don't have many coins I won't clean. Now I'm ready for the comments 😂
PCGS is anal on grading. Nuts on toning and what they call artificial toning.
