And I know a coin shop owner who sent in what he believed were 9 good coins and 1 questionable one and got back from PCGS 8 counterfeits and 2 good coins. IDK what the problem is at PCGS but there's definitely a problem.
An important subject! I just got through watching a video on a Counterfeit that was 90% Silver and passed the Sigma test. The first thing I did with this video, before he brought it up, is go to PCGS Certificate Verification, put in the number and found out this was fake. Personally, for a Silver Dollar, I will only buy Graded, that has a verified number, and I put priority on a coin that has Tru-Vue. I study the difference between the unique graded coin, and the picture at the Grading service.
I started collecting in '58. There were very few fakes,but quite a # of altered. Worst culprits: 09s vdb,16d dime,42 over 41 dime,96s & 01s quarters,89cc,93s,28s 1$'s. I bought a decent looking ag 01s 25c back in about 1970.could not afford a higher grade. Finally sent it in to anacs,damn thing,had an added S.
Look at the bonnet on the back of Liberties head. If it is smooth with no folds even though it shows a PCGS grade of MS-64, it is a fake or counterfeit.
Usually the fake coins inside the holder are poorly done. They don't match the grade assigned to it and most likely the Chinese counterfeiter has never seen a real coin and slab. They usually do assign a designation from 1849-1889 since those are years when the mint made gold dollar coins.
On PCGS and NGC is there ever 2 exact coins with the name serial number. TEMU sells a lot of nice-looking fakes. Those are only good for making coin rings.
@@stanleyclark923 I don’t understand? If it’s a real coin that’s been graded from the 2 big graders it will have a bar code and you can scan it with phone. I’m only ever seen one coin that wouldn’t scan. Buy from trusted dealers like Liberty in Longbeach and you want have to worry about fakes.
Great educational video. Question now is what do you do with the fake? I know it is not your property but as I understand you are not allowed to possess said counterfeit. I believe protocol is to call your local Fbi office and they will confiscate. Had a friend who collected alll sorts of counterfeits, did seminars and the FBI confiscated his collection. Was told they could appreciate his efforts but could not guarantee what would happen to them if they were left in his care.
Its so hard now ,i will only buy coins that have a picture to compare the slabbed coin to,pcgs true view with nfc chip or later ngc pictured ones ,+ run serial number in app(although that isnt a 100% cert as they are now copied+can run though test)only buy from a good dealer with alot of sales,a extra few £s or $s is worth the peace of mind in knowning its authentic without a doubt, wieght aswell of slabbed coin, just my opinion in what ive noticed, there is also alot of other tell tale signs with colour of writing if looked at closely.its got extermly hard these days to spot the fakes.good vid on staying safe.counterfeiting is ruining a good fun hobby.
I only buy coins that I can authenticate myself even in a holder. For new series that I don't know yet well I buy only from the most reputable dealers or instead, I buy the raw coin and work hard at home to authenticate (returning it back within the return window if its fake) and get them slabbed myself so that I know its legit.
You say that coin is fake why didn't you do the silver test? If the fake coin slab doesn't have an NFC chip why didn't you put your phone next to it to show it's non existence?
As soon as you started talking about the label font, I knew you were full of S. China's not too stupid to improve the labels. Effectively, slabs are dead in today’s counterfeit world.
The whole coin market and grading system from PCGS etc is skewed. If you submit heavily and often and once they see you are willing to shell out $$$ for grading from what I assume is old ornery idiots at the top grading companies you realize the market is flawed. Low annual submissions vs someone that submits 100+ coins a year. If you brought a diamond to 10 pawn shops your $ value would be more consistent than the decrepit dust sitting down grading rested on "reputable" laurels at the main grading companies.

I had decent luck at the pawn shop 12 years ago with Morgans in slabs. They even turned out to be VAMs. $40ea back then, about $85ea today, because they are PCGS graded, they have doubled in price since I bought them. You have to make sure that the bottom right corner has a pcgs logo in the plastic slab itself. Those are genuine
The first issue should be the word Morgan on the fake slab they only put the word Morgan on slab if there was another silver dollar minted the same year like 1921 other then that it does not need be there in 1899 there was only the Morgan made no other silver dollar so that tell you rite of the rip it’s fake period no other point need to be made on that one
Great presentation. Lots of good tips for spotting fake holders. Thanks for sharing. 😎👍
Ive seen some laughable fakes in the past, but I don't think any of us are laughing anymore!
Nope bc the fake is awfully close to the real!

Great information. Sadly, lots of fakes in the marketplace. Let the buyer beware !
Great video! It’s unfortunate that this is even an issue. Even more unfortunate are the victims it has created.

Hi Big Apple Stacker! Congratulations on reaching 1k subs! I've subscribed to your channel! 😎
Thanks. I wonder how it would test under a Sigma precious metal verifier.
What about the PCGS logo in the bottom right of the front of the holder?
Congratulations 3 away from 1k friendlys epic milestone
What about NGC? Do you have an example?
I bought 12 from FB that are fake. Complained, strongly, and got my money back. Now I have 12 fakes in a PCGS slab.
We should
Thank you for the info!

Well done. Thank you.
Good info. Never liked slabs, buy few. So many scams, sad. Coin does not look right as you point out.
It was bad enough to fake coins - now holders as well!
Does the fake slab have the letters on the bottom edge? I'm guessing that it doesn't!
Great info!
Great information, thank you.
Thank you!!! Maybe try a pop filter to stop the distortion…. Keep it up!
No PCGS stamped in the obverse right corner of slab either.
Great catch

imagine if we counter fit china coins , and sold them to the china resident's, this will be war ????????
You can scan the slabs to verify. It will have a great pic of the coin graded.
It doesn’t have a shield so it shouldn’t have a true view picture, right?

Etsy put out alotta fake Morgans....on some of them, they put "copy" right below "In God We Trust" so keep your eyes open..
I contacted PCGS and they said that they put the word Morgan on some coins for that year.
That coin is not a fake.
I assure you this coin is very, very fake.
@themillennialnumismatist I was also commenting on your comment saying they didn't put the word Morgan on the slab, when in fact they did/do.
1921 had the morgan+peace dollar so ngc, pcgs put either morgan or peace on slabbed coin for that Yr in description 👍
Sweet
Coin grading has completely ruined the hobby.
I got tricked ...twice!

Great video. Do you know what the weight of a genuine slabbed morgan should be?
I weigh them aswell, but I collect ngc ,so I can compare pictures .
