Talked to a guy at Tesla Mobile Service and he told me that they are extremely busy because of problems with Berlin Model Ys. Headlights falling off and crap like that. Sooo many angry customers.
It is a classic Tesla ramp-up. First few cars gets extreme QC and look perfect and then they start producing 5000-10000 cars a week and the problems show up 🤷♂️
My 2023 Fremont built MY was built near perfect. I made a service appointment for a few misalignment issues and the service personnel were shocked that I even noticed those things (off by 1-2mm at the most). They were cool about it and fixed everything anyways.
Congrats to everyone that gets theirs in amazing condition. I just hope their build quality can remain consistently excellent for all future buyers!

I have a 22 MY and absolutely love it. I finally got to try a model S this year and it’s something I thought I would love, I was wrong. All it did is reaffirm the model Y was the right choice. I felt I sat too low and just steering didn’t feel as tight like my MY.

I have a MX and had no issues. You used your car as a rental. Some of the issues might be related to renters not using as carefully as a owner would. Somewhat dishonest to blame Tesla for rental car issues.
37k miles is not much but imo never buy a brand new model wait atleast 1 revision to iron out the child diseases

@@austinpowers1999 if you make $130k and inflation is breaking the bank, sounds like you need help with your finances. I make $80k, bought a home in California, bought a Tesla, zero debts besides the mortgage and car payments, and inflation sucks but it hasn’t changed my habits or lifestyle at all.

I bought a new Tesla Model S 60D (software limited down from 75kWh for cheaper price) in January 2017. Options I had to pay for at that time were smart suspension, white paint and next generation seats. A few months later Tesla reduced the price to $2,000 to remove limit giving me the full 75kWh battery and uncorking a little better acceleration. I’ve had a few recalls but all were no charge and taken care of mostly by Tesla Mobile Service. My biggest out of pocket expense was replacing the original Goodyear tires with Michelin at 45,000 miles.
After 75,000 miles I still love this car and can honestly say it is the best car I’ve ever owned (the list includes ICE Ford’s, Pontiac’s, Honda’s, Saturn’s and an EV LEAF and an EV converted 1996 Honda Civic). My only reason to want a new Model S Long Range is for the 405 mile range and the new car smell. Maybe I’ll wait until the range goes up to 500 miles 😉. Jeff
I took delivery of a ‘22 Model S (not plaid) in 2/22. Fortunate to have reserved when the price was $85K and Tesla honored this price. Coming from Audis (including an A7) I figured I was stepping down in fit, finish and engineering. But I must say that this car has been great. It’s very dependable and all systems work well except for some occasional delays in Spotify loading. I’m not a fan of the yoke, unintuitive turn signal and capacitance horn. But I’ve learned to live with all three. If I was buying today I’d go with the round steering wheel. One additional comment. Unless you really want bragging rights for acceleration I believe the standard S makes so much more sense. I never understood how anyone could justify the much higher cost of the plaid…especially considering that (I don’t think) the suspension and brakes are upgraded. I have never had a time where the 0-60 at 3 seconds felt anything but exhilarating. And ample acceleration for responsible fun behind the wheel…I mean yoke!
You could retro add the round wheel now but you still have to deal with the capacitive buttons. Yeah the plaid trim isn't worth it. Why pay more for the same bad quality that lots of peeps are experiencing? It's like the build quality is going to get any better the more you spend. Just speaking the truth that's all. I'm actually a fan of the older 2016-2017 model S instead. The opening roof and vertical screen plus real leather! Also the stock rims were better looking as well but this is all subjective so.
For me, I’d get the plaid for a bit extra, however aiming for the X, cause I like sitting high, probably fastest accelerating suv (beats the Lambo urus for triple the price) and the falcon wings for unmatched eye popping feature. The cost for me because of customs is the same as the Roadster 2 ($250k) - still worth it.
Your comment cemented my decision. Still keeping my 24 hr plaid test drive though. But definitely ordering the base.
I took delivery of a plaid 22 and 0 issues so far. Had informed about a month now. No issues.
I didn't buy the Plaid for bragging rights, I actually use the acceleration all the time. Plaid in Sport mode is the same as the long range from a roll and isn't enough for me, as I was always get bored and turn Plaid mode back on. I really only use Sport mode in inclement weather. People that bought the Plaid in 2022 really got screwed due to the price cuts(thank you Elon); but, at the current $89k msrp or even less used, the Plaid is the biggest bang for the buck with a warranty, if fast acceleration and drag racing is your thing. I'm saving for the track package to unlock the 200mph top speed, stronger brakes and handling. I'm taking out a couple hundred lbs of weight too, its gonna be even more of a beast soon!
BTW, its easy to get a round steering wheel these days. Get that stupid yoke out of there, the round wheel greatly upgrades the driving experience for enthusiasts.
Still though, not knocking the current LR, it is plenty quick for the average person that's not a gear head like me!
Just got my ‘23 Model X Plaid - gave up my MYP. The 2023 model S and X are sublime - I love it. No issues at delivery except for a small nick on the rear bumper. It’s so dang nice - white on white baby! Hahaha
Just took delivery of a '23, and they've made huge quality improvements. At the current prices, I finally feel like the Model S has reached equilibrium. It is the best bang for the buck within it's class even more so now.

@@jrgb9945 That's asking a bit much, as it's a bargain at the current $89K. You will likely be able to find a used one for around 60k soon. Warranty for the battery and drive motors has it covered for 8 years.
Sounds rough, but I'm hoping that most of your issues could be chalked up to being an early adopter of the refreshed model. I'm getting an S Plaid soon. I just have to decide on the color.

It's the same thing with his first model y. Early adopter, lots of issues and then when he got the newer model y there were almost no issues.
I bought a 2022 S Plaid and I feel a lot of the issues Ryan ran into have been resolved. I haven't noticed any squeaks or rattles, except for the touch screen which rattles if I have it tilted out. I could get that fixed, but I keep the screen untilted which solves the problem. I find that the frunk may not open on the first try, but I rarely use it anyway. I like the yoke, but I'd prefer real buttons. Enjoy your S Plaid!

@@marctech1996 For the money there is absolutely no other production car I would have chosen over the Plaid, none. Even today after nine months of ownership and 14K miles, there is no car I'd trade it in for. If the Tesla Roadster ever comes out I might consider that, but I'll wait a couple of years to make sure they work out any bugs.

Great feedback on the models! I was between an S and Y for various reasons (and can’t really buy both). I ended up ordering a Y but was a little bummed about not picking the S. After seeing several recent reviews and watching plenty of creaking videos in a $100K+ car, I think I made the right choice.
I got a 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid that I took delivery September 2021. I still have it. My car, excellent fit and finish. I had none of the issues that this TH-camr experienced except for the yoke finish. Tesla Tesla Model S rocks!

Sucks that your piece had come with such issues, hopefully there is a better system in place later on to take care of customers with these issues rather than feeling like a luck system where some people get flawless cars and others don't. QA is surely not doing great, even as this is a few amount of customers it shouldn't be any paying such a price. Thanks for sharing Ryan!
Ryan I bought a 2021 model S LR that was delivered in Nov 21. I was expecting some issues with it since I read some horror stories. However, in my case my car was perfect. I have not had any issues I had PPF and ceramic put on it new and my installer said it was perfect. My car has performed much more than I expected. I love my S and plan to drivet for the a long time. I love the yoke myself but don't love the turn signals and horn. I wish it had a camera showing in front of the car when I park. I have been super careful and I usually back into parking spots so I don't have any scrapes.
I had this creaking noise on my 2020 MX. It was due to worn or faulty upper control arms. Tesla replaced them under warranty. They knew what the problem was as soon as they heard it. Exceptional service!
I've had my Model S plaid 2023 for about a month. Most of the issues you've had with yours must have been corrected cuz I don't have them with mine. The frunk is the only one I have. Have to hit the unlatch twice sometimes.
I have a 2023 S Plaid. None of these issues, and a fantastic car.
I took delivery one year later on my Plaid. I had zero issues. I love it so much and I am jealous to let FSD drive.

Ryan, thank you for putting this together. I picked up my 2021 Plaid about a month before you in August 2021. I haven’t had a single issue since pickup and very minimal blemishes at delivery, all of which Tesla corrected. It sounds like you got a lemon which sucks, especially at this price point. What was the file format you were trying to playback? That is some wild stuff - I would have lemon lawed that ride, Ryan. Keep up the great content.
From some of the rumors those creaks in the wheel well are from the control arms, a lot of folks have control arm failures in the S and X and they haven't really updated the design of the part. One of the engineers talked about it being structurally unsound due to the old casting mold still in use so failures at high way speeds can be pretty bad. Still no word for a recall on it

@@BooleanDev There was a class action lawsuit filed about it last year, probably hasn't been changed in the cars yet. Apparently it can corrode prematurely and fail without much warning
If I am not mistaken, it is a solution available in Germany it is inexpensive and solve all the problems on the upper and down control arm and the problem will go away for ever, if I saw it correctly they are replacing the bushes on the arms with redesigned ones. It seems that the supplier of those bushes for Tesla is doing some incorrect or unknown mistakes while assembling them.
I can confirm control arm issues. 2020 model s went through 5 of them

I got my Plaid in October 2021. Had most of the car clear wrapped. I have had none of the issues you experienced. Not a single build issue. Only service I have had was a repeater camera didn’t work after a month any it was quickly replaced with no appointment when I went in after they cancelled two scheduled visits to my home. I’m pretty mad I paid so much so I could get immediate delivery after the regular S I ordered the day it was announced kept being delayed. It finally came at the end of January 2023. I let a friend take the delivery because I love that rush of acceleration I enjoy a few times for an instant or more every time I drive it.
Model Y Performance is the best daily driver with function.
Model S Plaid is only good if you want hyper car speed but not dealing with expensive breakdowns like you get with 1000hp ICE cars.
I love my Plaid for that but my sisters MYP just makes way more sense.
I got my Plaid about 8 months after they were released. I did have to replace the steering wheel for wear and service fixed a creaking rear seat. Other than that it's been great.
Glad you like your model Y. Typically new redesigns for ICE come with quarks and issues as well, you did get a new redesign after all.
My Audi had a rattle in the dash..the solution..felt. 😂. The cup holder rattles if its not closed..so yah. My car also makes an odd suspension noise when i turn and go uphill, just normal stuff...not a big deal honestly.

Car manufacturers make problems for themselves. Why do you need a console drawer with a complicated mechanism. Just have a sliding door that stays where you leave it.

i just had a overnight demo drive of a model x and it feels so much nicer and solid than my 3. no squeaks at all.

Yo Ryan! I bought this Plaid a couple months ago! Lol it still has the insurance card in it with your name and I knew it looked familiar. I am currently enjoying the crap out of it. What a great car!
Mine is 2023 LR, Gorgeous Black ex White In, 21 Arachnid … love it! Except of a very minor rattling from the back seat… flawless! 4000* miles in it
I had creaking that sounded just like that on my model Y. Service ended up pulling the rear axle and re-greasing it and problem solved. The tech said it shouldn’t be needed but sometimes they can get dry and rub metal to metal causing that sound.

For the price, the performance is amazing, but since driving ultra fast would not be something I would use a ton, quality of ride and build would be more important. It is sad that it seems a Model Y is built better. My hope is their next gen production line techniques, which requires a vehicle to be designed with that kind of production in mind, will raise the build quality and daily driving quality levels. I am impressed with how quickly Tesla quality has been improving. They are still a young builder by industry standards.
I drive a MS Plaid and have had NONE of the issues Ryan had. Some cars are lemons. He unfortunately got one.

Nice that you’re always honest about your cars. If I had a $40k car that made that creaking sound and the manufacturer said it’s “within spec,” I’d be very upset, never mind on such an expensive car. For far less money, you can get cars that while slower, are just much better. I really don’t understand why people love Tesas so much. I’ve had one. Outside of speed, it sucked for the price. Not again.
The 2021 Model S refresh was pushed out the door before it was fully cooked. The build quality issues shown in this video make that abundantly clear. Hopefully, Tesla has addressed these issues in the 2022 and 2023 model years. Unfortunately, even if those issues have been addressed, the refreshed Model S contains numerous examples of nonsensical hardware, chief among them, the yoke and the elimination of the control stalks. Offering a steering wheel is only a half-way solution, as the wheel also utilizes capacitive-touch buttons for the directionals and horn. I agree with Ryan that the Model 3 and Model Y have vastly superior driver controls, and their build quality is better. The driver controls on the refreshed Model S and X are so counterintuitive, it's hard to imagine handing it over to a valet or service person unfamiliar with it.
My experiences, never buy the first year of a refresh or new model. This goes for most auto companies, but more so for Teslas. I waited until 6 years to buy a model 3. I haven't had any issues with my design.
Sounds like a comment from a non model S owner. I took deliver May 2022 and mine is flawless. Yoke is still wonderful. Only in tight parking maneuvers is it strange, on highways it’s superior.
@@jamespaul1835 I’m on my third Model S. I’ve owned a 2013 P85, 2016 90D, and currently a 2020 LR+. I know that some people like the yoke, but I use FSD regularly, and anything not shaped like a steering wheel presents risks when FSD is steering through intersections. The capacitive-touch buttons don’t allow me to drive with gloves on which is problematic in a cold climate. The elimination of the control stalks is a bigger issue than the yoke itself. Tesla got the driver controls right on the M3 & MY.

Like all things Tesla "New just off the line" has lots of infant failures. I just replace my 2017 model S with no issues with a 2023 Plaid. Everything works correctly. No leaks, No squeaks, door handles work perfectly, my main screen tilts, etc.. Elon said his self, his first 20K cars seem to have problems. Thx for another great video. Barry :-)
I had the same (unoccupied) seat rattling on M3 and the finishing between the lower part of the windscreen and the dash material wasn't perfect. Many many small things that had up.

Didn’t do much, if anything - but I feel Tesla was wrong for the shaft.
ABOUT THAT HORN: On those rare occasions when I've truly needed a horn to warn others of a pending collision, by the time I removed my hand from the wheel and pushed (hard) on the horn, it was too late to make a difference. Also, that motion isn't a practiced reflex because I do it so rarely. When there's an emergency, you should keep both hands on the wheel. In the event of a collision, do you really want your hand to be atop an exploding airbag? Side note: My Chevrolet Spark EV has an audible warning feature that I like. When you pull on the turn signal stock, the horn makes a trill and the headlights flash. I find it very useful in parking lots and traffic jams.

Thanks Ryan, appreciate your content...and your clear, rapid delivery. You're the one I turn to for the latest Tesla news. One small point...the Lucid Sapphire is a faster production model vehicle than the Tesla Model S Plaid.

I like your honesty when you're not selling us a product. I have an M3 that has been almost perfect. Does have the front end squeak noise? It was a lot more fun when no other person had a tesla. The fsd update last month made the car much better. I drive 110 miles a day on FSD for under $4.
Tesla's service is entirely horrible. The delivery center in Renton, Washington, has snakes in it.
It will be difficult for Tesla to hold the number 1 EV spot once the competition catches up. It will catch up! Tesla owners will shop around since anything else will most likely be the same or less cost. But I would pay more for better after-purchase service.

I too have an early 21 plaid it did not have any sqeaks or rattling.
No flaws with panel gaps or paint or interior. Also have not had your screen issues. The things I have had My yoke is starting to peal and that having to upgrade ram for video games is the thing that makes me the most upset as that was implied. I also wish I had the screen movable like the newer version of the car.

Ordered my plaid in Dec. I appreciate the honest review. Still not sure why everyone complains about the horn location. I can't remember the last time I had to use my horn. I guess that would be different if I did more big city driving. Thanks again for the review.
I agree. I could buy many plaid cash but after trying it decide to keep my M3LR with acceleration boost. Why? The plaid did not give me sufficient premium feeling compared to cost. Its also significantly bigger and that’s not necessarily a good thing in Europe. I was recently in Italy and I was so happy with not having a bigger car in the tight streets and parking garages. Furthermore the amount of radar cameras in Switzerland (where I live) makes it outright dangerous to have such a quick car.
Kyle Conner of out of spec has had the same type things with creaking and rattles on his Model S Plaid also. It does seems they had some problems with the initial builds of the Plaid.
I have a 2020 S and it is my favorite car. All time favorite. My FSD kinda sucks but I expected that as an early adopter.
Great, unbiased review. I was just commenting to my wife this morning how much I love my car in spite of it not being perfect because I enjoy it much more than any other car I've owned or driven. I have a '22 M3P and test drove a '24 Model S LR today. I loved it, never thought I needed one until now haha. This one had the round wheel and I wouldn't get the yoke, but I can see why it's offered because it would improve the sightline to the instruments. I got used to the controls pretty quickly although it took me a few minutes to notice I had a button on the right for the wipers (it was raining) because I'm used to the icon on the screen in my 3. After that, it was easy to use everything, including the turn signals and the shifter, but I definitely understand they are not for everyone. Getting back into my car was a little bit of a letdown, which I never thought I would say. The interior of the S is more of everything I love with my M3P - more space, more quiet, more luxury, the sound system was exceptional (the one in my 3 is also exceptional, but the S takes it up another notch) and I pretty much fell in love with it after a few miles. The speed felt the same as in the 3P but I didn't get to test it above about 75MPH where I know it would have been much quicker, because the limiter was set to 85 (I might have been able to switch it off but didn't try it) and it started cutting power dramatically at about 75, but I honestly came away from it thinking this would probably be more than enough for me. I love fast cars, but the regular S is already capable of a 3 sec 0-60 and 10.7 sec 1/4mile at 130 MPH. That's M5 and Huracan speed. Do I really need more? I've had my 3P for almost 2 yrs now and the acceleration is still enough to make me giggle out loud. The Plaid is all about bragging rights. I don't know which one I'd ultimately go for but I will definitely be getting one or the other at some point in the not too distant future.
Had the oposite issue when buying a Samsung fridge advertised with the Family Hub but then Samsung took a high percentage of features taken away. So even buying products with promise to fixed later dont always work with ones that come with them. Tesla even taking away features after purchased which isnt cool, Great video Ryan.
Just took delivery of my 23 Model S LR and it is amazing! No issues at all! I was able to purchase at the lowest price to date and was able to transfer my FSD! The quality and ride are much better than my M3. Love it!!
Model Y, I too have one door (rear driver side)which retains water after rain or a car wash. Tesla service told me it was in spec for the door. The issue was not fixed. I now open the door to let the water out after I wash the car. Odd since it only occurs on one door. Tesla QA issue.
I can't stand the fact that Tesla got rid of the stalks for turn signals, shifting, cruise/self driving, and wipers!
As long as u accelerate, every passenger smiles 😊

As a Model 3 LR owner, for over two years, who was considering an upgrade to a Model S LR, that was certainly an interesting video. Thanks. I also won't buy another Tesla until they bring radar back. My autopilot has not been nearly as useful since the radar was disabled.

My blue model S LR built in Nov 2021 didn’t have all these problems. But, I don’t like the tiny horn button and wish NHTSA would recall every yoke for a fix.

My 5 year old Audi A4 has done 41k miles. I’ve had absolutely no issues. Wanted a Tesla for some time, but after seeing this post, I really don’t want to risk it.

Sorry you had troubles with your 2021 MSP. I too HAD a Sept.2021 MSP, but thank God had No problems at all with it. I now have a 2023 Ultra Red MSP and so far no problems in 2,000 miles.
Were they able to do anything about the rear seat rattle? Both my rear seats make the same noise and it’s extremely annoying.
Same sound as my model 3 performance 2018 silver.
That sound at the back chair i solve myself 3M double sided tape needed.
The front passenger side cricking, now I found out the metal chair attached to the floor.
My car is out of warranty & tesla will charge per hour to find out where the sound come from & another charge for fixing it. Very expensive because to find what .& where the sound cause or come from cost per hour. I think I remember tesla told me $280 an hour.

There will ALWAYS be an issue with EVERY vehicle. If you think your car has 0 issues, it’s because it doesn’t bother you or haven’t discovered it yet.

I do not understand the problem with the horn position. I have owned a few cars that had the horn on one of the stalks where you either have to pull a stalk or press the stalk and had no problem with it, even in an emergency. You get use to any feature in a very short period of time, similar to manufacturers that place the indicator stalk on diffieent sides of the steering wheel.

That’s why I know people who got a (mostly long range) model Y over an X even if they are different in size, most of them not needing the third row even though they could very well afford the X.

Model S and X weren’t designed for manufacturing like the 3 and Y. They would need to drastically overhaul the design to approach a similar build quality, not just a refresh

Are you sure it has rear wireless charging? I test drove a brand new Model S this morning and the phone slots in the rear did not charge. I asked the sales guy, and he said it did not have rear wireless charging.
This is why I rarely buy any car when they first come out. We have a 2023 Model S and everything work perfectly!
Little to no problems with my early 2022 Plaid X. Would love to sell it but, am so badly upside down on value vs amount owed.
Don’t feel sorry, a friend of mine had a much more horrible case with his BMW 740i. Almost every part of the car was replaced and my friend had driven it for about total of 20 days in one year, got tired and sold it. Luck of the draw.

If you compare the production lines for the higher end and lower end models it makes sense the expensive ones have problems. They make like 30k model s plaids vs 1,000,000 model 3’s.
When I had a test drive in the Plaid I loved the acceleration and new interior but it feels like a big boat. Especially compared to the Performance Model 3. It just feels excessive and clumsy but that’s just my opinion
For a 130,000 USD vehicle, the initial QAQC issues mentioned in this video seem kind of excessive... Man... thanks for sharing. Hopefully, they have been addressed.

On my Tesla when im stopped and I turn the wheel it makes a loud noise but I recently test drove a model x and it did the same thing
Issue is you paid $130000 for a car which worth around $85000.
