  • To mark Lee Kuan Yew's 100th birth anniversary on Sep 16, 2023, CNA is looking back at his more memorable quotes. cna.asia/leeku...
    In one of his most iconic speeches, Mr Lee Kuan Yew spoke to a rapt crowd who gathered in the rain at Fullerton Square for PAP's lunch-time rally during the 1980 General Election. Using the dispute with Singapore Airlines as an example, the then-Prime Minister described in no uncertain terms the qualities needed to run the country and the lengths he would go to ensure Singapore's success. Watch an excerpt from his speech on Dec 19, 1980.
    Watch the full documentary special Lee Kuan Yew: In His Own Words on Sep 15, 9pm SG on CNA's TH-cam channel.

      @@jessiejames7492 Not only Singapore, in my opinion :) I'm from Romania - vastly different country, historical background, region. I can't get enough of listening to this man, who I honestly believe is the one of the greatest leaders ever. I'm not even exagerating, when you look at the changes he brought to his nation. From a, sorry, but pretty backward port with interethnic conflict to one of the most advanced, peaceful and best standard of living nations in the world. The Meiji Emperor of Japan can boast with such profound advancement of his country in one generation. I would also add Charlemagne in Europe (starting the pacification and boosting education after the hundreds years of chaos that followed the fall of Rome). Thing is, there aren't that many leaders who have managed profound advancements of their nations in a generation.

    Timeless wisdom and heavy dose of stark reality from LKY:
    "Whoever governs Singapore must have that iron in him";
    not just to deal with domestic challenges,
    but also foreign challenges;
    having the guts to stand up, be firm and
    not be intimidated, pressured or coerced by bigger powers.
    Otherwise, Singapore can lose
    its freedom and sovereignty
    as a small, open and resource-scarce nation state.

    As a Korean, I admire former President PARK Jung Hee as much as I admire President Lee Kuan Yew.
    Some people (including Koreans) say they were dictators. Really??
    By developing a nation economically, each of them enriched the middle class of each country. And the healthy middle class is the foundation for real democracy.
    Moreover, I have never seen any national leaders weeping out of concern for his/her country's prosperity.
    Do you know any dictator of their age (e.g. Hochi Min, Marcos, etc.) crying in public out of concern for his/her country's advancement???

    Mr. Lee Kuan Yew was a great leader. But you need good citizens as well to build a great nation. The success of Singapore is not only Mr. Lee's who provided the vision and leadership but also of Singapore's citizens who followed it and made themselves a success for the world to see. Most Asian countries, mine included aspire to be the next Singapore.
