Lee Kuan Yew - When the American CIA tried to bribe him and a Singapore official Aug 1965

  • August 1965.
Footage of an interview of Lee Kuan Yew, the Prime Minister of Singapore, conducted by Australian and British journalists.
He revealed an attempt in 1960 by an agent of the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to bribe an official of the Singaporean Special Branch to report on the activities of the Singaporean state.
He also revealed that the American agent was arrested and threatened with prosecution. But the case did not come to open court. He told the journalists that he sent a message to the American government, which he accused of "lacking finesse", to give Singapore $100 million dollars for economic development. However, the Americans responded by offering Yew and his political Party $10 Million. He refused.

@@mjmj3658 back when singapore was still a british colony, schools mostly operated using a single language, so all the subjects would be taught in one language. there were english-medium schools, as well as chinese/malay/tamil-medium schools. taking a second language was optional, so most people grew up fluent only in whatever language or dialect they spoke at home, as well as what was taught in school. LKY’s parents were english-educated, so he already spoke english at home, and he also went to english-medium schools for his primary, secondary and pre-university education. he then went on to study in london and cambridge, so it’s no surprise his english is fluent and he’s the most comfortable speaking in english. he also learned malay. though he wasn’t very fluent in mandarin in his youth, as a result of not learning it in school, he made an effort to learn it later on in his life and supported the speak mandarin campaign. so yeah, don’t make sweeping remarks like that, because he definitely spoke more than just english, and you’re just making yourself look ignorant.

As a Singaporean in his 50s, I am part of that generation that began to enjoy and live comfortably in the fruit of founding father Lee Kuan Yew's labour, and that of his founding team who altogether laid the groundwork for our tiny country to be where it is today.
Till my last breath, I will uphold everything our founding father stood for : much of it is manifested in our national pledge which was first written by the venerable S Rajaratnam, and co-edited by our founding father. For what he has been through to fight for Singapore's existence and our right to exist as a people, if the time ever came to defend our country, I will lay my life defending it, and so will my family.
Am deeply proud as a Singaporean that we had Lee Kuan Yew helm our country at the terrible time of poverty and turmoil when we had absolutely nothing. No words can adequately express my gratitude to him and his team for all they have done for us Singaporeans, our families and future generations.
I think what made LKY stand out was his mind, sharp wit, his grit and determination, his foresight, sensitivity, his statesmanship and his ability to garner respect from most quarters, including other leaders from around the world, because he first respected them intrinsically. Through time, his word and behaviour as our first Prime Minister in bringing forth a 3rd world country to 1st-world in half a century, and his very deep and sensitive insight of geo-politics, grew his reputation exponentially. I am a layman on the street, but to me, LKY was a true leader, irreplaceable, who stood tall, proud, and resilient by his people, despite all he and his team faced. He didn't buckle from external and internal pressures but stood steadfast. You could punch him hard, and he'd be rocked momentarily, even for a longer period of time, but still soldier on. His wife, Madam Kwa Gek Choo was his rock, so her influence and support were critical to his being when he helmed Singapore. As Singaporeans, we are also indebted to her, albeit indirectly. He had an unquenchable belief that his Singapore would one day prosper in peace for her people when upheld by integrity, what's right for the people in general, and meritocracy.
Thank you Founding Father Lee Kuan Yew again, for all you and your team have done. We hope your spirit will positively guide Singapore and its 4th generation leadership forward, that they may not forget that power without clear communicative foresight, heart, effective management, and sensitivity to the ground will only eat away at our foundation.
    Majullah Singapura!

One thing is certain, Singapore’s stratospheric rise from a malaria-infested kampung backwater in the Straits of Malacca gripped with ethnic in-fighting to a successful, first-world economic powerhouse is nothing short of a miracle! I always was impressed landing at Changi airport and walking around in the city. I always had a thought for him on my trips to Singapore when I lived in Indonesia. My Singaporean relatives in gov.wouldn't loudly criticise, just to be on the safe side, check out the many political jokes on this.

This is why it's far more important to vest power in people who are competent and responsible, instead of limiting power under the flawed assumption that power corrupts, and end up having insufficient power to do anything meaningful.

Mahathir had tried to use authoritarian style like LKY but with the Malays, it was not popular at all. The Malay Malaysian and Singaporean are two totally different set of people and with numbers it would have the same effectz if LKY tried this in Malaysia he would have been ousted immediately because the Malays would viewed him as another racist DAP leader (assuming that he would be part of the party). The neighborhood is dangerous and riddled with ethnic strife, including a lot of anti-Chinese ethnic strife. If the gov't is foolish and corrupt, the Chinese community that is the backbone of Singapore might find themselves massacred -- that is not an outlandish fear given what has already occurred in Indonesia and Malaysia in the 50s and 60s. And Singapore does not mess around with making sure that ethnic minorities are respected and get their fair chance at success. The gov't views lingering problems that might lead to ethnic strife within Singapore as a potential dagger in the heart.

I've been to Singapore a couple of times for work. I was quite impressed with the accomplishments and smooth running society. It is just a joy to visit.
Lee was a fascinating guy. On the one hand, he implemented policies that tightly controlled the press, public discourse, and political opposition, which are hallmarks of authoritarian regimes. However, he was also deeply pragmatic, focusing on meritocracy, efficiency, and anti-corruption measures that drove economic success and high levels of public service.
I'm really ambivalent about him as I tend to believe in democracy (as messy as it is), but they guy forged a multi-cultural society that actually functions for 95% of what citizens could ever ask for. I sure wish others with great power could be so disciplined.

Thanks for frankly admitting what most of your fellow Western self-haters won't do: admit your desire for a noble dictator to take care of you -- to "benefit you" -- in exchange for surrendering something that terrifies you -- your freedom (which obviously would entail the responsibility of supporting yourself as well as participating in your own self-governance).
Lee's expression of outrage towards America -- at an American intelligence service, specifically -- because it does what EVERY spy agency does, including Singapore's -- to cultivate sources of intelligence in foreign countries by offering bribes to their weaker officials -- is just laughable. Yes, the specific official (in Singapore's Special Branch) is deserving of admiration; Lee Kuan-Yew was a hypocrite.
The numbers of admirers of this man from the self-hating American and Brits in this comment section just shows the pathetic state of our current culture.
