  • To mark Lee Kuan Yew's 100th birth anniversary on Sep 16, 2023, CNA is looking back at his more memorable quotes. cna.asia/leekuanyewquotes
On Aug 9, 1965, Singapore had decided to separate from Malaysia after less than 23 months and become an independent and sovereign state. Then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew went in front of the cameras and delivered an emotionally charged address to a nascent nation. "For me, it is a moment of anguish because all my life...you see, the whole of my adult life...I have believed in Malaysian merger and the unity of these two territories," he said. Watch an excerpt from his speech on Aug 9, 1965.

Mr.Mahadevan, u think Lee Kuan Yew made Singaporeans to beg for food or eat food from garbage dumps. Mr. Lee sought out Singapore's bread and butter issues within one generation. He also elevated Singapore from third world to a first world country in one generation. Singapore is the third richest country in the world. Moreover for Ur information our Primary and Secondary School children are number one in the PISA OECD examination. All because of what happened in 1965. The sheer determination and the will of the Singaporean people and the Good governance of the ruling party have propelled Singapore into another league in the world today. He said prior to his death he doesn't want a cult of personality, he doesn't want to be memorialized as a legend, he wants to be remembered as a normal man. Which is why there is no museum dedicated specifically on him, his land and home is not made into national heritage sites, and there are no real statues of the man anywhere in the city state. Things may be named after him like a college wing or a street but nothing more than that. He found it quite trivial and antithesis to what he built. A movie would make him roll in his grave, but I think a small documentary would probably fit more in line with his wishes to not have a gaudy production.

LKY cried not for Singapore, but for the minority races in Malaysia that would continue to suffer from the racist policies of the Malaysian constitution. LKY said no longer being able to politically help these minority races (who desperately looked to LKY for help) now that Singapore was removed from Malaysia, was the greatest regret in his life, and that is why LKY wept. LKY had championed a non-racist "Malaysia for all Malaysians", while the Malaysian government (continues to this day) champions the vote-grabbing racist "Malaysia for Malays".

I am not from either countries but I think this was for best cuz they just two different nations, in Africa we still suffer cuz of the borders the conolizers build they separated different ethnic groups into different countries that why one different African country have over 100 different African languages and tribes they can't unite so they had to keep the conolial languages which I turn brought back neo conolization into the countries cuz Civil wars broke out, Singapore end up being good so it worked out for both countries in end

The only reason I think why malaysia expelled singapore is to mantain a majority. Malaysian peninsula had quite significant chinese population. But still outnumbered by local natives and malay population. But if combined with singapore chinese. The chinese suddenly have a thin margin majority. The malays wanted to mantain political majority. And undermine every attempt of singapore to negotiate.

The founding father Lee built the foundation of modern Singapore and brought it to the level it is currently, highly developed, prosperous, and stable country. Besides celebrating their great leader, Singaporeans should work hard to ensure the country Lee sacrificed his entire life for does not start going backwards or retrogress due to mismanagement and corruption by current leaders.

They will be bullied and killed. That’s why he cried when he said ties of kinship. That’s why he bare the burden till the day he died. But many people failed to see that.
