    Just a note to anyone having trouble with this process. After hours of frustration, I found that my gps could not be recognized in flexiport. I switched to the main port and finally got a connection. So much for my sbus plans. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.

      +Bailey Josephson Good point, I've added this as a note to the video as, thinking about it, we had something similar too..

    Pro Tip: Since you annunciate and are a clear communicator and since i am fast listener, bumping your playback speed up to 1.25 makes your tutorials go by just right.
    BTW. If your interested I have an assortment of luminere open pilot revolution and CC3D controllers that you might be interested in.

    Just in time! I literally got most of my quadcopter bit and pieces in the mail including the gps.
    Obviously the auto-setup didn't work for me aswell, so this is EXACTLY what I was looking for.
    Thanks alot!

      I got a question tough, maybe you have an idea:
      I've set my second flight mode to VelocityRoam/Position hold and slected the GPS assist.
      I can't seem to arm the thing with these setting. Any ideas?

    Quick tip for you, when calibrating the Magnetometer, use the compass to align the grid on your cutting mat and then that is your reference for the copter.

    Hey there, this is the gps I was talking about on the gps mod on your naze32 channel. The only difference in the one I have is the label listed on device and the connector which connects gps to naze32 board.

    The reason why the auto configure feature did not work is because by default the model of the GPS you have selected is NIMEA at 9600 Baud. If you use this default it will work

    Great video as always. Got exactly the same Revo/gps myself. Had a few probs with mine, my case fell apart which wasn't a big deal but annoying and then the gps burnt out my esc. I'm not the only one according to BG's comments on the GPS sold on its own. Worth keeping an eye out for it getting hot mate.

      +Painless360 So whats the advatge to a larger GPS module? Is it simply that a larger antenna gets better signal?
      Apart from the laborious setup, whats the big disadvantage to using the cheap OP GPS box? In a nutshell, why did you change to a different model?
      btw, thanks for the excellent videos. yours video guides are the best on the net!

    Lee, Thanks to your professionally produced videos on the Taranis X9D Plus and the CC3D Revo I have taken the plunge with both. A mini Ublox Neo-6M w/compass auto configed and is working great but getting that telemetry data over to the Taranis is a problem. I've seen mention of LUA scripts but being a newbie I have no clue what they are. Maybe you could do a video on getting these two products to work together or point me to a resource that would explain how. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jrshabby LUA scripts allows programmers to make cool little programs/apps that run on the radio. They could be a nice screen that shows all the layout of the telemetry or one of the standard ones is the LUA script that help you create a new model on the radio with graphics and menus and everything. You can search online and find other LUA scripts for the radio. To use them the LUA support needs to be in the radio.. Hope that helps..

    Aww man thanks,I didn't even know this was up til today! So now I have to download that UBlox config tool,and the process you showed is really easy as long as I have the video going!LOL! I hope that auto config situation gets figured out at some point.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +im2tall1 Once you've done this manual setup then the autoconfig starts to work (it bumped mine up to 57K baud) so it looks like the GPS was just 'too far' from what the Revo could change on it's own..

    I am trying to set up GPS and am having a little problem. Perhaps you have the answer. I have the CC3D Revo (full size) and the same OP Gps that you installed. Everything goes fine until I set the attitude estimation algorithm to GPS navigation INS13. In Flight Data, there is a big red X on the screen where it shows the quad orientation. Also ATTI, STAB and MAG are red. I recalibrated everything in Attitude calibration. Before setting INS13, there is no red X and the ATTI, STAB are green. When I turn INS13 off, it is back to normal. I hope you have the answer. And thanks for all the time you devote to making these videos. They are a great help.

    Do you have a link to purchase the FDTI as local shop didn't have one, and I searched ebay and such, and the ones that I saw, though not sure if makes a difference, seem to mention specific for different FC arduino or MultiWii and 3 or 5 amp..........AND....I haven't a clue which......... LOL they do seem to be cheap, 3 USD. and is anything else needed, as I noticed that other 'pin' thingy you show. Have too many mini usb already.

    Well, I totally destroyed my OP GPS connector trying to connect up my FTDI USB adapter. This small connector requires EXTREMELY small pins. Even my smallest Arduino breadboard wires wouldn't fit. :-( I wish you could have shown HOW and WHAT you used instead of the document diagram for us all. Once I destroyed my connector and ordered my new OP GPS nodule I connecting the now cut wires and I received a blank page of GPS data (Opening up via F6) - What I was wondering is if it only displays info while the OP GPS is outdoors or will it display data without the received satellites still?
    With this being my first attempt I don't know what I should be doing :-( TY for the Great work on these guides - I am very great full for your work. Joe

      If I can't figure out the connector I cut the wire and then solder it back together when it's sorted. Not ideal but some of these connectors are so small..

    Can you describe the cable you used to connect the GPS to the FTDI basic with the GPS in this kit. I can't find the female cable end that matches the male end attached to the GPS. I suspect cutting the GPS cable in the middle and splicing it back together isn't the best option. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi, Would you mind give me a little help ? I have the very same gps shown in the video and a revo board. I attached my gps to the main port and configured it on the GCS after power off and reconnect I see the gps black with 4 red lines. I saw the system tab but not the setup side of it just the status and it shows gps connect but gets zero satelites. I tried indoor and also outdoor and I left it connected for more than 30 minutes to charge the supercap and download the gps data. I did not try yet to use ftdi and configure it with the win soft you mentioned. Any hint ?

    I noticed the hobbyking description for this gps unit says that it has limited functionality. After you got the gps up and working were you happy with it and did it perform properly? Such as did it return to home and loiter correctly? I am adding gps to my 250 quad and I like this unit for its size but I don't want a lemon so I am debating on purchasing a better ublox system or this one. What are your thoughts?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which one the GPS we used or the OPLINK GPS? The UBLOX is a full function device - I'd ask HobbyKing what they mean.. Best of luck..

  • @brookdrew7643
    @brookdrew7643 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    no, I wanted to know if YOU were satisfied with the OP GPS. Did it work correctly? Specifically did the loiter and return to home function work correctly on your 250 sized quad using the op gps. I trust your reviews over hobbykings. I would like to add this gps to my 250 quad but I don't want to buy a lemon, thanks.

      Thanks.....Finally got a good calibration all the way around and have it flying well in attitude mode.....I have just started playing with the GPS modes starting with position hold....when I change to Position Hold sometimes the drone will sit rock steady and other times it will start to rock side to side moving further and further each direction until it becomes unstable and I have to change back to Attitude mode to save it. Any idea what could be causing this?....I would say it happens about 50% of the time I switch to PH.....Thanks for the videos and the help....

    Is there a compass in the gps module? (I dont see any mention of compass on banggood..?) otherwise i cant imagine any of the gps modes working properly as the cc3d internal compass is sitting directly on top of the PDB. Start the motors and compass data will be useless. this is based on my experiences with apm 2.5

    By the way, I got this working with Libre Pilot, the latest version 16.09 r782 supports DJI Naza GPS natively and also supports NMIEA (9600 By default) on the revolution and works out of the box, fast and finding its satellites. However, my dilemma started while I had the connections taped together, I tried to make a custom cable and inadvertently shorted my Lumeneier vintage Revolution Open Pilot board (ordered a clone through China, 6 week delivery timeframe), it all worked beautifully in my TBS discovery. Do you know the color coding of the wires in the Naza GPS? I have red, blue, grey and the silver open wire (the ground or shielding?) I think I may have blown that too because I don't see a light come on. GPS. can I supply an kind of voltage to make it come on?

    I'm having trouble talking to the gps through the FTDI. I'm connected through a com port @ 9600, but the packet console view is giving me data that is blank. I've tried switching the Tx & Rx wires, but doesn't help. What am I missing? I have tried two different gps units. It's the same one you use in the videos. Any help you might offer would be appreciated.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chuck Horton You would be very unlucky to have two GPS units bad so I'd suspect the settings in GNSS or the FTDI adapter. If you know the adapter is good then make sure 'auto-boarding' is ticked and the FTDI port is selected in the GNSS GUI when you try and connect.

    Hi,Many thanks for the videos I have had no problem with multiwii RTH but no luck with the Revo. My question is- If I travel to a new location ie 2miles to the flying field do I need to reset the home location and recalibrate everything ie magnetometer? With the Multi wii it returns to the arming location but i'm not sure with the Revo

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Super Crosser You can get it to store the home location on arming - see the videos in the series but until the ability to support an external mag is supported the GPS modes will struggle.. Happy flying!

      +Painless360 I have located the revo on the top plate of a qav250 and the magnetometer traces are not effected with full throttle applied. I set my home location at. home and performed all the calibration. I then unticked the home location box and took it to my flying field 3 miles away. Without a PC connected I waited 10 minutes for it to reset it's home location and it armed. However position hold and RTH did not work. Am I doing anything obviously wrong? any suggestion s much appreciated

    I was able to get the AutoConfigure mode to work with the OP GPS (though my unit was not purchased from Banggood). And I am getting a fairly successful position hold using that with the onboard mag. But I am getting a fairly wide "hold range". Much of the time it's with a 1-2 yards/meters, but once it probably got at least 10 meters from its initial position (little to no wind).
    My mag lock isn't perfect, as it goes from green to amber and back during flight. But the tracking position on the GPS looks pretty wild even when the craft is just parked on the ground with motors not even running.
    So is problem mostly the cheap GPS, interference with the mag, or both?
    I tried to install LP 16.... but had an installation error. I think I'll try re-positioning the GPS for the moment to see if that helps anything, but just curious about other's perspectives...

      I understand there is a update to LibrePilot due soon so I'm hoping that will improve things. An external mag is needed IMHO, without it the GPS modes won't work reliably (see our video on why GPS modes need a solid Mag). Best of luck!

      Painless360 Hey. And thanks for answering. I am the kind of pilot that needs full controll over the drone myself. I fly racing quads. So i was mostly just thinking of having it there in case i needed it to come home. If something should happen. Is it enough with only the op gps then? And do i need the fdti basic for the op gps? I could not find any videos on how to install only the op gps. And also thank you for making these videos. It was because of you i started with this about a year ago. So you actually changed my life into something better. I can make and sell drones now. Just that i havent learned to setup gps and osd. Im waiting for and ftdi basic. Im putting in a link under. Is this the ftdi basic i need for programming osd and such? Would realyappreciate if you could help me see if i have bought right ftdi:-) www.banggood.com/FTDI-Basic-Program-Downloader-USB-TTL-3_3-5V-FT232-For-Arduino-p-988937.html .

      Are you using iNav? Some features with these older boards are being removed from the software for then as they struggle to run them and don't have enough memory. I'd check the Wiki for the software and board you're using in case this is what's going on..

    Ok I connected my opgps (same as shown in your video) onto pc using ftdi and soft u-center. Now I see a blue light flashing into gps but there is nothing in negrite (activated) into message window and when I try to activate the ubx messages as per your video 10:05 it does not activate. Also in the package window we see no text coming at all however the bottom right corner of u-center shows a green light and also gps is flashing its blue light. Remember I did Conect to revo board before and got no satelite. Now I think I have a faulty gps. I do have an old naza lite gps which connected fine to the u-center and I saw good gps signal even inside my garage. It has only nmea capabilities (I think) can I still use it with revo board or I do need to go buy another gps ? Tks

    How do I physically connect the FTDI to the 4 pin plug on the OP GPS?? is there a cable you can make or buy? Its just that the pins for the plug seem to be so tiny.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I ended up getting some of the connectors and then soldering very fine wires to the back of it and then connecting those to the FTDI adapter - bottom line it was a pain in the a$$. LibrePilot is 'supposed' to auto configure the GPS but it never worked here and others have had issues too. Shame the answer from the developers was along the lines of 'it should work..' Best of luck.

      @@Painless360 Yup I've tried many things including following your set up to the letter. Always defaults back to 9600 baud & Nmea. There is some chatter on various forums that the cheap Chinese clones may not have any non-volatile memory. Sounds bit far-fetched but I'm leaning that way after hours of trial and error with the 2 NZ GPS units i have tried & my flip32 board. I can configure the units as per the tutorial and re-connect at the new baud rate. All works fine but as soon as i power cycle the GPS it reverts back to default. Driving me nuts :-) Ill report back here if i ever solve it, just in case somebody else experiences the same issue. Thanks for your quick reply Cheers

      There are a few tricks that pilots use. Adding your name and phone number to the model is helpful, adding a buzzer too to help in long grass or crops is a good idea. Outside that then using RSSI signal strength with your radio (if available) can help you track down the model if the battery is still plugged in. See our video on that.. Best of luck!

    Anybody..help.... :(
    I have one of these...YKS Ublox Upgraded NEO-7M High Precision GPS Module Built-in Compass from amazon I plug this into, and set the main port to gps.. and I added 2 lines, connected it to the flexi port and set it to i2c for the compass...but the compass never reacts to it, just the onboard mag. Everything is fine, it arms, it flies. As soon as I set, say, position hold and gps assist in one of the stab lines, and switch the gps from contemporary to GPS INS13, the hud freezes and the craft will not arm, even if I set it to always armed. All alarms green except i2c, that is black. I read somewhere the revo board does not configure the i2c port, I have to download some program and create a program to use it.

      +Visesh Lall I thought that Librepilot didn't support external compasses at the moment...

    • @redeyegoblin
      @redeyegoblin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am doing a lot of digging into that. I am on the librepilot forum a lot as well, some seem to have gotten it to work. But the info is a bit confusing to me, because if you select the ublox gps in the initial setup, the setup diagram shows one connector, as well I have a pdf on the revo board that describes it in a lot of detail, and does not talk about using the I2c port for an external mag, and if you buy the entire revo package, the gps module says there is a compass, but only one 4-pin connector... SO everything points to using the internal mag. All that aside, even when I try to set it up as the libre pilot instructions say, as soon as I select position hold or gps assist, it will not arm, and when I select INS13 as instructed, the hud freezes, and nothing happens. If I undo those selections, everything is ok, it arms and responds normally... Still digging, I will get this working, and I will post my findings.. incase anyone finds themselves in my predicament! And thank you for your responses!

      So let me add... the 15.09 version does not support the aux mag, they plan to include it in the next version. The persons who I saw using it actually wrote their own bit of code to get it to work... I am not so inclined! so I will wait till the next version. In the mean time I will try to get it to work with the onboard mag.

    @sirlanzi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Painless 360. In generally like your videos, but this one is shouting out for a crash.
    quite a few things are incorrect during this setup.
    1. the mag call will not work the way you showed in your video. in a miniquad there is too much mag interference to make use of the onboard mag once the motors are under power. you will need an external mag.
    2. to make use of gps flight modes in librepilot you will have to switch the filter from complementary to ins13. otherwise gps modes will not work reliably.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +sirlanzi thanks for the comments. This is about adding the GPS, there is lots more to cover before a Pilot can use it. We will be covering all of this in the 'Using GPS Flight Modes video' along with using external 5883 compass via i2c, compass selection in Librepilot, setting home location to 'False' before going to the field and video of it all working. We have shielded our internal compass using MuMetal to help with RFI/EMF interference from the power system already (you may be able to spot it in this video). What is your process at the field for setting/managing home location each time?

      Yes, LibrePilot (the firmware that is installed in the CC3D) has desktop applications for both Linux, Windows and OSX/Mac.

    This is very confusing. CC3D is the second version of the CopterControl and Revolution has a modem (oplink) and a compass onboard.

      +lee parkin as you don't mention the type of GPS you're using It's tricky to give specifics. I'll make sure that you're clicking the save settings menu item in the CNSS software, apart from that it might be worthwhile trying another GPS unit. I only fly iNav now with modern flight control boards for GPS flying. Everything else just seems to be too much hassle. Best of luck

      Depends on what you have inside it for the flight controller. We've added GPS to pretty much every type of Open Source board on the channel in the last three years.. Best of luck!

      thanks, that video is a helpful checklist, unfortunately my problem persists.
      I am using the same gps module and flight controller as you, the flight controller is perfect and the gps works. it sends data to my computer. I can see this data in the "packet console" window and see my location on the map window. In fact, everything works the same for me as it has for you right up to the point where you disable stuff in the NMEA part of the "messages" window (at about 9:05 in your video). I can right click and select "disable child messages" but it remains highlighted. it also won’t let me enable the things you have enabled in the messages window.
      I have tried to contact the seller, they have been no help. I may have watched every available video on youtube related to this including some in languages I don’t understand, i have spent hours on google and in forums trying to find an answer but have found nothing that has helped.
      i have also checked and re-checked my connections, even going as far as using an oscilloscope to ensure there was no loss of data at any point and I have tried using several computers with different versions of windows and several versions of the u-center program
      I’ve hit a wall here, any advice you can give that you think might be useful will be greatly appreciated

    • @tomjones634
      @tomjones634 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      can you tell me what version of the U-center were you using for this?

    • @tomjones634

      one final question, the only reason i am going to this much trouble is i am currently on a bit of a tight budget. however, if i were to replace the cc3d revolution later on, is there any particular flight controller you would recommend? considering gps functionality is my main concern. thanks

      See the iNav series, the CC3D is VERY long in the tooth now and the kit for a modern system like iNav is really inexpensive..
