You are right about this song being about David Gates' father. Most people think it is a love song and I think David was okay with them thinking that. But the lyrics like, "you gave my life to me, set me free" and, "you sheltered me from harm, kept me warm" make total sense in the context of him missing his father. Good call.

I'm an old guy and this brings me to tears every time I hear it. Everyone is absolutely right - it's about his dad, but still works as a love song. But as a dad, I always think of my two sons.

This is my all time favorite from Bread. So glad you've reacted to it.My husband was born in 1948n the same as my oldest sister, and his parents were not affectionate in front of him and his sister. They didn't talk about stuff other than if family was coming over and the Bible. He never knew them to ever have a disagreement much less a full out argument.
I was born in 1956 and I, on the other hand, saw my parents hug and kiss every morning and as soon as Daddy got home from work. Mama had his super ready and made him his plate and he always thanked her and bragged on how good it was. They talked about everything but money and sex in front of us. The had arguments in front of us. It taught us that people can get angry and still love each other. And we knew they loved each other and liked each other a lot. They had 7 kids after all. Lol.
So my husband and I had to work out a few things when we were dating. Like it was OK to kiss me or put his arm around me in front of people. Then in front of the kids. Lol

This is absolutely my favorite Bread song. I strongly associated it with my great grandma when I was a kid. I was very close to her and then she died. She's old enough that she came across Kansas in a covered wagon in the 1800's. She loved me dearly and I still have dreams about her sometimes all these decades later. This was on the radio all the time when I was in grade school and spending a lot of time with her before she died. And she was lucid until the end. This song really brings that kind of emotion.

I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Diary", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender" & "Aubrey". In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".

I love this song. Bread are so good. Interestingly, Ken Boothe made a reggae cover of this. Well worth a listen.
