@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Thank you for the kind words. My mom's passing was regretful since she moved out on us when I was 10, so she was kind of gone but it did hurt some but not like his. I knew this song was about his dad so I guess that's why it always breaks me up. I'm so sorry about your losses. I know we were lucky to have to have these people who loved us so much. But it always hurts. Thanks again.

I was 15 when my dad passed suddenly (he was 47 & I am 59 now). Right or wrong I've carried that heavy loss since that day. The line "nobody else could ever know, the part of me that can't let go..." just destroys me with its simple truth. Here's to our fathers...

Bread was one of the best 70's soft rock bands. Lead singer David Gates was a first rate songwriter.
"" If", "Sweet Surrender", " Baby, I'm A Want You", Diary", "Guitar Man", " Aubrey", "It Don't Matter To Me", and " Lost Without Your Love" are among their best hits.

Am not a huge Bread fan as it was a bit before my time, but the 70s singer/songwriter era produced TONS of gems. The music really mattered then. About everyone thinks their era produced the BEST music, but I would have been happy to have been born 10 years earlier and been a child of the early 70s .... for sure!! Tons of great music through the years, but the 70s are truly golden.

Lex with your recent announcement of your pregnancy, this song reminded me of when my wife was pregnant with our first child. She had a favorite song she played a few times everyday. I am so glad you guys did this song. I've always found it amazing that I really don't like very many songs from bread, although I do like a couple. But this song has always meant so much to me and I love it. I agree that it's probably written to apply to a lot of different things and it's a lot more about the feeling and the emotion of it. And also I'm not taking someone for granted. For me this song was on the radio all the time right around the time one of my two great-grandmothers died that I was lucky enough to know. The other one had already died. But this one lived not far away and when I was very young my environment was sometimes fairly chaotic and I would end up spending a few days or a weekend or sometimes even a week with her, I'm not sure why exactly. But I grew to love that time and I could tell she did too. She never said too much but still she showed the way. There was a certain spring smell about her place. She would hug me or put her hand on my shoulder in a way that wasn't threatening to me and it just felt so relaxing. I truly felt loved. And so when she died, I played this song over and over. It's still kind of makes my allergies Act up.

    Brad: it’s about a dog

Happy Father’s Day to all the great Dads out there!
Everything I Own - Bread. David Gates of Bread crafted this song as a moving eulogy to his father, who was his guiding light. In an interview, Gates revealed that his father's passing inspired him to write 'Everything I Own,' which captures the essence of his feelings toward his father. The song's lyrics, including 'You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, gave my life to me, set me free,' convey a sense of appreciation and loss.

Yes, this was about his father passing. Bread has about 8-10 beautiful ballad hits. They were very popular in the '70's and radio gave them a lot of air play. Bread's Greatest Hits is a great album if you just want to wallow in being sad for an afternoon and there was once a joke about exactly that on an episode of "Will and Grace".

I think the song that sounds like this but is about a pet is called "Shannon". Paul McCartney did a happier variant on the idea on the Beatles White Album with "Martha My Dear".

@@dggydddy59 when Brad said that he thought the song was about a dog, I immediately thought of 'Shannon'. A horse is a horse, of course, of course.... lol.

The romantic in me always made these songs love songs - or love lost songs. Obviously, there are other interpretations. One benefit of reaction channels, is that all these years later (thanks in large part to the internet), you might learn what the songwriter's inspiration or intent was.

I was born in 70, but, from what I can remember, Bread, The Carpenters, and John Denver were a huge part of the "70s sound" in the first half of the decade.

Bread, Smokie and Dr Hook wrote the soundtrack to my childhood. My mother seemed to be constantly playing records when I was growing up. I can still hear the sound of the needle making contact with the record and the slightly crackly vinyl as the record started to play. I still listen to those songs today (Digital now and I miss the crackle) and when I do, I’m transported back to those long hot summers and a time when everyone had long hair and faded denim was the uniform of the day.
