The lead singer, David Gates, wrote this song for his father, who died before David achieved success.
One of their best songs is "If"

@@telynns8490 You are so right. I had always thought it was about a lost lover relationship until I saw them in concert back in the 70's. David Gates talked to the audience a bit between songs and told us that it was written about his father that passed away. It's funny how you can think a song is about one thing and it can be about something else entirely, but the lyrics can make sense for both. My parents were both alive back then so it didn't hit me as hard as it does now when I hear it.

I am a child of the 1970s...i came into adulthood in the mid-seventies...Bread was as important to me as was The Carpenters, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles and Led Zeppelin. Beautiful music always moves you emotionally... never be ashamed of those emotions. It shows you're human.

Bread is one of those bands that does not get the recognition that they really truly deserve. They have always been one of my favorites since I was a young girl in the 70's. They just did not do enough music.

You nailed it. This song is about his dad. It hits me hard as well. I lost both of my parents 11 days apart, 3 years ago, my mom to Alzheimer's, my dad to Covid. I miss them both, but my mom especially, because we talked every day until Alzheimer's made her forget how to use the phone. This is such a good reaction. And now I am providing care for the friend who kept me sane after I lost my family because she has dementia. So I loose more of her every day. It is so funny. My Sweetie and I were watching reaction videos and I said to him,I don't think I have ever seen anyone react to the group Bread. My all time fav older group. I'm 60 and I remember my brothers playing their songs then I loved them and still have the 45 record with "If" on one side & "Everything I Own" on the other in my hope chest. Then I looked and saw you did a reaction to this song. My tears flow like a river because I lost my Dad in 1996 & then my Mom in 2022. My Sweetie lost his Dad in 2014 and his Mom 2023. I was just crying yesterday because I and my Sweetie are going thru serious health struggles and I just wanted to talk to my Mom so so bad. She was the only one who has known me forever and gave me life while almost losing hers in the process. Now turning 60 this year and not having a parent at all is rough & you have regrets regardless. My Mom and I spoke everyday and each night we called each other to say one was going to bed and that we loved each other. I still sometimes will grab the phone at 10pm and say,I'm going to call my Mom to tell her goodnight and I Love her but then it hits me all over again.
If ya still have parents alive, don't take one day for granted. Call them, text them, send them cards, letters, funny notes, flowers when can or if ya live close, stop by,visit with them at least weekly, take them out to eat or take them a meal & eat with them. Just be with them as much as ya can because life is short and getting old gets lonely too for so many.
Thank you for this reaction.❤ Blessings from SC 🙋‍♀️👍❤️✝️

Yeah, I was never a concert goer myself, preferred listening away from crowds but a friend bought these tickets that included backstage passes and I was at the right place right time. After the concert though when going backstage and my friend and I seeing David Gates walk over, I was nervous. He was super nice. Chatted a little then he asked if we wanted to go upstairs to meet the band but me being a Christian and young, all sorts of sordid things I imagined would happen should I go....lol...
But I politely said no, I just came to hear the songs and had to go. David I'm certain understood my unease. He just smiled and like I said, such a real gentleman. Now I kick myself for not thinking about grabbing a camera...

I'm not surprised so many of the "Reactors" have never heard of the bands, the songs & singers & songwriters of the 1960's & '70's . . They were so amazing and abundant it blows my mind. I had a "cover" band from 1965 - 1975 in Southern Cal. (I was frontman/singer, played guitar & keyboards) We played 5 hours a night 6 Days a week, and when I look at our old play lists & how many songs & bands we covered as a trio or quartet each week it still Blows my mind. . but I count myself as fortunate to have experienced the 1950's, '60's & 70's musical scenes in my teens- twenty's & thirty's . . I'm 83, still "experiencing" some of the new musicians on TH-cam! They give me hope for the future of music!

I used to slow dance to this song. 😊 Good times!
I was a teenager then. I didn't quite understand the full meaning of the song because I had not experienced loss before. I do now. I took care of my mother till she went home to rest with the Lord and back in the arms of my father. What would she had wanted me to do? Not to grieve her absence? She knew that that pain nerver leaves. The pain stays there. But one thing she taught me was that with time you learn how to live and function with that pain. My friend, death is part of life. We will go through it as well. Nothing to fear. Now is the most important time of your life! What was past, there is nothing we can do about it. The future nobody knows. Now is all we have. Make this moment count. I heard you with "American Pie" when you said about how difficult is for you to even mention death. Well. The sooner you learn to accept that reality, the better. Well... That teenage boy that slowed danced to that song is sixty one now. Every season has its own beauty. Face them gratefully. Remember, this life is just a school...
    Much love señor.
    Your (tío) Jaime

One of my all-time favorite songs. Bread was one of my favorite groups when I was a teenager in the 70s. I loved their music then, but have grown to appreciate the songs even more through the years.

I was born in 1960. I grew up with thee BEST music ever written and preformed. No auto tune. Real vocals. Real amazing musicians. I have seen some of the BEST. The Eagles, Heart, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blue Oyster Cult, REO Speedwagon, Boston, Kansas, The Doobie Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, and on and on and on. We will never again have the music of the 60’s/70’s and mid 80’s.

I was so lucky to have had my mom for 52 years. She passed away in 2016. She was literally here one second and gone the next. Not ill, nothing wrong but just gone. I am still getting over that. Love this song and thank you for bringing me back to it.

Saw these guys in 1971, after coming home from military service in Korea. This song always makes me think of a life-long love who died way too young.

    “If”
    “Aubrey”
    “Guitar man”
These are some of their greatest songs!

It just grabs your heart strings, doesn't it? Singing along to a great group from my Senior year. Lots of dances, too. The song feels somehow deeper now that I'm 70. 54 years later, hubby and I feel the past fast approaching.

I am a 66 year old woman who enjoyed your Channel watching the greats from my time. I was a 16 year old girl in college first time away from home. I listened to this song every day in my dorm. I played my bread Albums and sung along. Bread always included the lyrics with there albums. I also enjoyed Chicago color my word and 25 and 64. I have watched several of your TH-cam appreciate the songs I grew up with 50 - 80’s.

This song came out the year I was born and my dad played it over and over when I was a little girl and he could play the guitar part - fortunately he is still here with us, he’s 74 and plays every weekend with his band at different pubs! He’s an amazing man - thank you for playing this song ❤
