Mind The Gap! Fitting the Coronus Grav-Carrier by Forge World hull together How-to

  • One of the challenges of building resin models is getting large assemblies such as hulls to fit together well. Warped parts and other inconsistencies from the production process can create large gaps that can spoil the look of a vehicle or prevent it from being properly constructed.
    Join me as I demonstrate how I do this using my recently purchased Coronous Grav-Carrier as an example.

    This is what the fit on the underside should look like, check out Tiny Plastic Spacemen's Coronus assembly tips: th-cam.com/video/bE9mshOlvuI/w-d-xo.html

      I know I’m waaaay behind catching up with your posts. (Great channel). I was wondering if you do another retro ~hammer; if the Inquisitor/54mm game system is far enough back to BE retro ~hammer that would be an interesting choice. It’s been a long time since anyone even mentioned that system. But it was pretty different and reasonably cool too. Thanks for posting & your numerous HH posts. Heresy era my personal favorite

    great video, its a whole different level working on resin to plastic

    For my hull assembly, I used two pack resin adhesive. It made the job much easier, and involves less filling. Also the bond is highly unlikely to cause problems later on.

    Actually really nice watching someone tackle a tough kit. I've heard the Calladius suffered with similar issues?
    I've avoided both kits so far, but I can see a Coronus in the near future...

      +Korran Orainn The Caladius is an interesting one, I actually bought one at the Warhammer 40,000 open day last November. While I was having lunch at Bugmans I opened it up and found the side nacelles had really bad mould slippage on their undersides and the rear hull had lots of air bubble pitting some of which damaged some of the detail. I also thought it didn't seem much vehicle for the money, especially when compared to the excellent Macrocarid I had also bought. Needless to say I returned it on the day....
      The Coronus does feel at the right price point but I've found the kit a challenge so far. As well as the hull fit in the video I've already posted I've found the engine assemblies don't fit properly because the nacelles are distorted and will be returning those for replacement. I'll be shooting another video on that to show you guys what I found. Just something to consider on the Coronus..... which is a shame as it is a truely lovely looking vehicle.
      Thanks for watching :)

      My caladius fit like a dream, but my coronus is in worse shape that the one in the video.

    I'd love to see how you 'fiddle' with the bits. The process you go through for heat bending for example. I would be fascinated to hear your thinking on how best to heat the part and then see the next minute or two of you actually working the part. I know you said it took over an hour to shape the elements to your satisfaction maybe you could show excerpts of that at critical points in the process or some sort of time compression view.
    I hope you show the way you go about sanding and filling. The other day you showed us your take on the removal of excess resin using a sharp and blunt craft knife. Maybe it's only me but l loved every second of it, I found it really instructive. Seeing the exact way someone else goes about solving a perennial issue is a revelation in its own right.
    The music is a little distracting. Have you tried some of that ethereal background music that Kevin McCloud produces.
    Personally I don't believe you need anything to run in the background other than what you have to say.
    Thanks for another great video.

      +Rob McCord Thanks for feedback and comments! Lets me see.....
      In terms of bending the parts to fit on a complex kit I could give it a go, you are quite right that it is fiddly and I'd have to try balance informative camera work / microphone with being able to effectively work the model. I'm a bit fed up with the Coronus at the moment so might actually get back to my Warlord so there might be an opportunity there - leave it with me and I'll see what I can do.
      Your dreams will be answered on sanding and filing - I shot a video on final sanding on the two Contemptors I've been working on so will post that up, probably tomorrow. I try out a new sanding product I've bought on them so that should be interesting. If I forgive the Coronus I'll do another shoot on sanding hull which has required a lot of work.
      On the music front, yes I've used a fair amount of KM's work and listened to loads of his tracks, he is very good and prolific. I'm still experimenting with music in terms of which formats to use it in and which tracks work best but thanks for letting me know.
      Thanks for watching :)

    Thats the one think i fear when i buy the big resin that the gap are to big to fix, luckily the two model i bought, a valdor tank hunter and a macharius vanquisher did not have a gap :)

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cadars Yeah, it is always a risk. One thing I will say on the Coronus kit is that aside from the fact the hull sides are not properly sized is that there are design decisions that contributed to the gap problem.
      I've not done a Macharius but the four tanks I've built on the Malcador chassis all hide the joins underneath the vehicle along seams in the actual design so issues are much easier to fix.
      On reflection the Coronus was an absolute pig to fit and is going to need a lot of work to fill gaps and restore details.
      Thanks for watching :)

    I've watched a number of your videos recently and found them truly fascinating. It's such a shame that FW's quality control is so poor currently.
    I really do hope that someone high up at GW/FW is seeing videos like this being posted and is starting to sweat. For the money involved, these kits should be far better quality.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ross Patrick Cheers mate, I'm glad you have found them interesting and appreciate your kind comment.
      Nothing would please me more (in the hobby world at least) if FW took note of my experiences with their kits and did something to address their production issues. It's a bit like the 'elephant in the room' for the HH at the moment- the collectors and gamers love the line and creativity but the quality frequently fails. However many people must be overlooking the issues they are having because the problems keep coming, if 37% of kits generated a parts request I can't see FW being able to cope.
      Anyway, get ready for the Coronus to cop it again this week as I have encountered another problem, which will need a replacement part, tonight, lucky me!
      Thanks for watching :)

    An interesting vid thanks for sharing. To be honest this level of poor fit is unacceptable in kits costing this much, it seems FW are just cranking the models out and they seem poor quality for the most part.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Johnny641 I have to admit I'm rather disappointed with the kit fit as it looked so good to start with. I've just finished gluing the hull together and doing all the filling and it has taken a long time to do.
      I'll be talking about this when I review the finished model as I've noticed similarities between this and the Mastodon. Both are full resin kits with extensive interior detail and both are plagued with fitting issues (I speak from experience having had two separate Mastodons, both of which I rejected for extensive casting and fitting problems).
      My view is that FW should steer clear of full interior detail kits as while they have some talented sculptors who can make great models the production teams simply can't execute the production well enough. In addition, the interior on this vehicle is too difficult to see so really isn't justified for the compromises required for mould design. Only a handful of converters are ever going to appreciate the interior detail on this model so they should not have bothered.
      Thanks for watching :)

    How do you heat bend the parts?
    I am relatively new to model making and would like to get all my models looking as best as possible.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +ShadowFox178 I immerse the resin part in hot water to soften it and then manipulate it into shape.
