    Great tutorial. I never used magnets before, i always pinned arms and weapons to large minis. Since getting back into painting minis and watching numerous you tube vids, it definitely looks like magnets are the way forward. Thanks

      +Nat Wainwright Thank you sir! I'm a fairly mild magnetiser and stick to doing so were I need to for game looks and transport practicality. That said the variety of magnets available currently at low cost means your imagination is the limit on what you can do.

    I actually use the heat method for my magnets, i then remove the magmet so that i can place a good magnet in. I use a solder to heat the magnet while its on the model so that i can control the depth and it works extremely well for making the hole needed

    Hey I did something really similar with my Dorito though I used two little bits of metal on the tabs on the back for the ammo hoppers. Good call with the pilot hole with the spike. The lascannons are definitely going in my Forgeworld shopping cart so I'm glad I put the effort in.

      +Brooks Sligh Those Arachnus Lascannons are great weapons for the Dorito (it cracks me up every time I hear it called that). I'm hoping that the Legion army list gets amended at some point to allow a Deredeo Talon, I mean nearly every other Dreadnought class can be taken in threes :)

    Good job! Magnets are my speciality within the hobby, my deredeo is done at the waist, guns and ammo feeds, missile launcher and the nipple guns. I've also done a baneblade so that it can be any of the 8 types and my macrocarid has its whole track sides done so it can split into 3!

      Zippokovich Thanks dude! I'm a magnet newbie compared to your list of modularisations :) The Baneblade sounds a great one to do as if I remember correctly you get all the parts for the variants in a single plastic kit?
      Thanks for watching.

      You do, and lots of them go unused if you do a conventional build. It's probably the craziest one I've done though as the whole top deck, front glacis and engine deck has to be interchangeable so it can be either turreted or casemate version. Then the guns need done, then the side plates and sponsons all need done. It has something like 90 magnets in it and took about a week. It is useful to be able to use different versions but I did it mainly as a magnetisation challenge!

    Although you could drill into the body to make a key hold for the magnet, You could just drill halfway so the base magnet inside the body only sticks half way up, where as the attachment/weapon/head is drilled to compensate its own magnet and the half of magnet its locking onto.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +OnyxedDog Yes, that's a great idea if you have taller magnets than those I used here. You then need to be precise on the centring of both magnets as the proud magnet will need to recess in to the launcher mount accordingly. Thanks for watching!

      I've tried multiple methods to this, I also have tried different applications of glue, you could use plastic cement to actually embed the magnet sometimes, however because some of the smaller magnets, you have to be careful about them gluing to each other.

    Forge World seem to be moving towards magnets more - I believe the new Tau Barracuda flyer for 40k have holes cast for magnets in the weapon options and the instructions specifically reference what magnets you need. I personally magnetise every kit I get, within reason, I don't know why I do it to myself - every single marine I have has a magnetised backpack and weapon.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Egalogalis That's interesting to know, I guess I have to redact myself on saying that Forge World are not embracing magnets-for-options ;)
      You sound like a connoisseur of magnetisation, is there a benefit of doing so on Marine backpacks or is just for the enjoyment of building them that way?

    • @Egalogalis
      @Egalogalis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      leakycheese I like the options. If I want to run minimum tac marines and fill my heavy support choices with heavy support squads I just pop the bolters and back packs off and swap support weapons and back packs in. It also has the added benefit of making them easier to paint. That and I guess I have too much time on my hands - it takes about 5-6 hours to put 10 marines together but I cheat and use the plastic Mk IV.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Egalogalis That doesn't sound too bad, it normally takes me longer than that to do the same number of FW Marines with all the clear up work that is necessary.

    You could always keep one magnet that previously had been heated to make the hole, then replace it in the hole with a fresh unheated magnet.

    Are the side cannons removable or would I have to magnetize them as well if I bought one

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +thedoubledeus You would need to magnetise those as the shoulder joint is a ball and socket type arrangement. You would also need to do the same with the ammunition feeds I guess.
      Thanks for watching :)

      The cocktail and sharpie method is a great one, it works perfectly and uses general household items.
      Those CERN magnets look almost powerful enough to hold a Warlord together ;)

      Cheers. I've always used First 4 magnets but they can be pricey. Thank you for the alternative. I'll trust them you recommend them. Yeah there might enough room in the carapace to fit a liquid nitrogen cooling system haha. Maybe for the Emperor Titan lol.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kyle Bartley Oh heck yes, chromatophobia is a big problem is hobby. Choosing black Iron Hands helps but those blue eyes..... gah!!
      I jest, no fear of colour really. I've just been on a enormous collecting and gaming mission and ended up with three heresy armies slightly by accident and painting kind of got put to the side.
      Iron Hands are first up to paint so I'm sure I will do some videos on those as they start to take shape.
      Thanks for watching :)

    Instead of using two magnets if the body plastic is thin, just use one magnet in the gun and a piece of flat metal like from a tin can in the other. Of course the metal must be magnetic, not an aluminum can.
