My Coronus Grav-Carrier Model and Build Review: construction tips and unravelling a mystery

  • I have to admit that I didn't think building my Coronus would ever make me laugh, but it did. Please join me for this comprehensive review of how I built my model, the tricks I used and some advice on getting a good result.
    I also consider the design influences of this smooth looking machine and then finally share what gave me the giggles as I finished the build. Proposed is an alternate way to complete assembly - be aware of the trade off this requires!
    The Coronus Grav-Carrier is the largest vehicle currently fielded by the Custodians and serves as a fast moving armoured transport for the companions.

    You do realize that the interior detail would be visible if you didn't fill in all the gaps. That's what I did with mine. It may look like utter crap from the outside, but you know what they say -it's what's inside that matters :)
    Seriously, though thanks for the vids--I've got two of them on order and hopefully they won't have the same problems...

      Gabriel Magister *Handpalms face* You see, it's that sort of out of the box thinking we need when dealing with stuff like this!
      Your kind comment is much appreciated, I hope you get fine examples of kits and all goes well with the builds. I'd be interested to hear how it works out if you get the chance.
      Thanks for watching :)

    Fascinating insight on the balance point. I would have thought that Forgeworld should have picked up on this issue in the prototype/sculpt stage. I really get the feeling that everything about this model was rushed and the level of oversight just isn't there.
    Anyway, a beautiful job on the build LC.

      Rob McCord Well, they spotted it in time to modify the production models via the 'path of least resistance' route at least. I get the feeling that FW are always at capacity with new model production (evidenced by the long list of stuff we have not had models for across various books) and can't keep pace with the written material. My take on this is they couldn't spare the sculpting and production resouce to redesign the underside hull plate but who knows.
      Cheers for appreciating the build, this was not an easy one and I'll be looking for some easier projects for a while to recover. Thanks for watching mate :)

    Im one of those guys that loved the interior detailing kit for the forgeworld shadowsword and the chimera, it add's a nice touch and yeah most people will never bother with it but when they roll in detail thats not immediately obvious (titans, this kit etc)it's great.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Golden So would you say the interior detail is a feature that would draw you towards buying a kit regaldless of what it is as you enjoy painting those? Thanks for watching :)

    Do you think that leaving out the inner bulkhead might have had an influence on the overall balance...?

    I'm considering getting into WH and I really love the look of these grav tanks? are they playable in the current edition?

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +lolzyking So far the Custodian grav-vehicles only have rules for 7th Edition unfortunately. Thanks for watching :)

      I really love the lore for 40k but the art style always felt off for me, I'm really digging the primaris vibe, and I also like the legion vehicles, especially the hover bikes, now that I have the income to afford a 40k army, I was considering between the two, I really hope these become 8th edition legal, these models were only released in 2015-2016 right?

    I've got a similar issue with interior detail on a Caestus I've picked up but haven't bothered to assemble yet. It feels like a waste to not paint it but it is so small in there that there's no way to actually see inside.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brooks Sligh Yeah that's a similar case..... I bought my best mate one for his 40th and he did just what you said and built it without doing the internal detail as it is just too hidden away to appreciate without substantial conversion work.
      Not that would notice anyway as I tend to be running away from the darn thing when it joins the battle!
      Thanks for watching :)

    Im pretty sure the vehicles design was based on the old deodorant stick grave tank, with the curved front of that tank split and turned down to do the nacelles

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The old Grav-Attack, what cool way to use an old deodorant!
      I suppose there could be although I always thought the Javelin Land Speeder was the model that paid design homage on that model?

      No worries. I did hear that bit i meant Eagles on the like in the art work! Like the eagle on the Ravenwing model Jetbike Sammael.

    What's the yellow mold material?

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ShadowFox178 The yellow is Milliputt epoxy filler that I used to fill the gaps and repair distorted detail above the rear door:

      @ShadowFox178 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      leakycheese Thanks for that, I was scratching my head thinking 'that's obviously not green stuff… is it?'
      It's a very impressive job you have done on the rear of the model in maintaining those lines as well.
      P.s. I recently saw on the Warhammer community website they are releasing for 40K talons of the emperor boxed kit. It includes 5 Legio Custodes and, 5 Sisters of Silence, a standard contemptor dread, along with a rhino and land raider (I'll be honest I was very disappointed to see standard astartes vehicles for the faction in a kit, in an effort to add value for posterity.)
      It might be of interest to speculate/ cover in general. All the best.

      +ShadowFox178 You're welcome, I talk more about my opinions on Milliput vs. green stuff (kneadatite) in my series covering resin model prep on the Deimos Rhino if you are interested. Appreciate your kind comment in the rework on the Coronus as it did take quite a bit of time to get there (still filling it down lol).
      Thanks for the tip on the ToE 40K, I've had a look and wryly smiled to myslef when I saw what the proposition is. I will talk about my thoughts on this when I do my tutorial on magnetising the Achillus wrist joints as it is an interesting topic. Cheers!

      leakycheese No worries, will keep my eye out for future content.
      I've personally thought about modding heads of certain models and using a steel bb to create a magnetic joint with some articulation to it. Also I am planning on creating lighting mods for my triumvirate sets that are rechargeable via usb while maintains a very small profile, the idea I have is to use a piece of plexi glass as a base while using an led to spread light out making it glow. Also using a fibre optic cable to transfer light, miliput looks like a good resource in isolating light in tight spaces. Sorry for rambling, thanks to your videos I have a better idea on what to do when I come to put my models together.

    Its a bid sad that all that interior details get lost and a really big design flaw in my opinion, i always tries to paint the inside since i think it gives it a better look, i've even build a fully interior of a baneblade with 11 crews :)

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cadars I can see your like for the interiors, it reminds me of some of the Gunpla fans who like to paint their suit frames even though they get hidden by armour when complete. So there is a "paint it because it is there" school of though then.
      Your BB with 11 crew sounds awesome and thanks for watching :)

    Poor design, with no hatches or removable panels-kit could have been half the price (who am i kidding).
