As Geraldine Stutz said, "Fashion says 'Me too', and style says 'Only me'." It's still true today, and I love that you teach this in your videos, Marie-Anne.

Well thought out and presented. It use to be most clothing manufacturers focused on basics then added a few trends. Now it’s quite the opposite. Finding nice basics is like finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. I am a serial outfit repeater! I really appreciate a quiet style.

My lovely grandmother always told me that if one article of your outfit is of unquestionable quality, the impression you'll give is that everything else is of the same quality too. It could be a good watch, a necklace, a bracelet, shoes, a handbag, or a piece of clothing. As for what others think: I dress to please myself, and I do end up wearing the same classic pieces over and over again. As a single parent, when my kids were growing up, I had a pretty limited clothing budget. And I have received many compliments for an outfit that was purchased at a thrift or consignment store!

My suspicions are confirmed, I am really French!😄🇫🇷 These rules come easily to me and I have followed them for a long time but it's thanks to my Mom that I have. Thank you Mom! Timeless style rules to remember - they serve everyone well. Great video as always. ♥️👏

I agree, my mom had impeccable taste. Two things she taught me: first you should wear your clothes, your clothes shouldn’t wear you and that people remember prints and color so, if you wear them they better be good. I’m a chronic outfit reapeater and live for neutrals. Living in the southern part of the US this philosophy of dress perplexes people.

I loved your video. When I was 20 I was blessed with a trip to Paris. I was told that a French woman might only buy one really great wardrobe piece a year instead of a multitude of trendy sale items. For example, investing in a fine tailored suit. Here I am now at 60, cleaning out my closet and trying to now cultivate the classic wardrobe. I wish I had adopted this practice 40 years ago! 🇺🇸🇫🇷

Marie, I am taking a little exception to this video as there are women out there such as myself who follow these same rules and we are not French. I wear my favourite pieces to death.... Always buy quality and classic pieces that last for ever. You just have to look after your pieces and either dry clean or don’t have to wash them every wear, just air them out.

The way you describe how French women love to wear their clothes is the way most women in the Mediterranean countries love to wear their clothes before globalization. Pieces that last , stable neutrals , subtle additions , a piece or two that absolutely flatter us , that we don't mind wearing .
But each midterrenian country has a twist about that , that reflects the nature and culture of the country.
I am an Egyptian and I have noticed the similarities between my style and Italian, French , Syrian , morrocian and Spanish style before globalization without seeing women from these countries .
After seeing them I even have a deeper love for my Mediterranean cousins, we have so much in common , regarding family as well.

I completely agree with your style rules - neutral colors, classics, wearing things more than once - wearing good pieces multiple times, style over fashion trends...except for the toning down a sexy look - I avoid the sexy look altogether - just go straight classic. About the black dress - you can change it so many ways by wearing different accessories - that's my favorite thing - totally classic clothes and fun with accessories.

I don’t want to look amazing again! 😂 I have clothes that I wear for many years because they are good quality, well tailored for my body type, and because I feel amazing wearing them. Confidence is always chic. I update my basic pieces with a few colorful or trendier items. Hello Marie-Anne, I have been looking forward to this video. It’s always good to see you my TH-cam friend. Three things you mentioned that I apply to my style are classic pieces that can stand the test of time. A few days ago I went to the hairdresser to trim the hair at the back of my neck ....yes my hair is growing again after chemo....and I wore a navy jacket that I have had for more than twenty years. The hairdresser complimented me on my beautiful jacket. I wear my clothes again and again and one of my neutrals is burgundy. Thanks for another informative video, stay safe my friend. Greetings from The Netherlands.

Such a marvellous video I sent it to my 32 yr old daughter who has passed it on to her friends. Great advice like, don't think of your frock as an "old favourite" - call it your signature dress. Don't let the outfit outshine you etc. We need this sort of style guidance because we have been beguiled by shops like Primark into thinking "new is better" rather than "good clothes are called classic for a reason." Thank you too for making it chic to be ecologically responsible.

I just learned about your channel and I love it! My family is from Ireland and I am first generation Canadian but my mum always reminded me of a "French woman." Not just because Paris was her favourite city but she was calmer than me and well rounded (I have been called talkative and eccentric and have the Irish cheery melancholy, but always loved and wished for my mum's calmer and almost reserved nature). That said...I love learning more about French culture and slowly adapting a lot of the traits that seem "classically French" - and I am just talking from my Canadian perspective here - but things like slowly down and enjoying my food, eating and trying a wider array of foods, putting more of an effort into looking fresh and put together, and I love the almost androgynous style and blend of "boyfriend chic" into my wardrobe. Not sure if I explained myself well... I just want to learn more and adopt all the traits and skills that I identify as being things that could help me grow as a person. Thank you for your lovely channel! 🇨🇦 🇮🇪

Marie, I really first heard about French style rules from someone I knew who went to France a long time ago (1980's) when we all first heard, less is more. She was very keen to make observations about all aspects of culture, for example of culinary habits like shopping more frequently not only about fashion while traveling. Then, she modeled French cultural styles in her personal life. Later, I was able to compare French, Italian, German, British, cultural styles to embrace what I appreciate and what I imagine would be useful.

@@MarieAnneLecoeur Once I read about a well known successful business woman who was living in New York. She had several identical black articles of clothing and wore them like a uniform. Never spent her time thinking about what to wear and how to dress. Then, several characters, mostly men, in fictionalized stories had several identical black suits and identical shirts, and etc. Batman's Bruce Wayne comes to mind.

    Hi!
It's so nice to hear that French women admire other women's style when they see a woman wear a flattering piece repeatedly!!
I got a chuckle out of that when I remembered wearing the same dress as a co-worker one day, and the shock and dismay directed at me because of it!!
I thought it rather funny, but noooo!!
    Anyway!!
I am so glad to learn about capsule wardrobes and finding a better style than I'm used to wearing.
I'm struggling with my hairstyle right now, but hopefully, I will have the patience to deal with it until it flatters me!!
    Thanks so much, Marie-Anne!!

I loved all these tips especially the first one!! I feel better about choosing classic pieces in recent shopping. I feel more confident that I am saving money long term as well from excessive shopping for silly trends. One trend I wish would go away is the holes in jeans!! When I was a kid in the 80s and a teen in the 90s it was cool because we earned those holes from skateboarding wipeouts!! 😂 now it's silly to buy them with a hole.
Marie-Anne I just wanted to say I love your theme music and the vibe you bring in your content. It is always upbeat, positive and classy! ❤

I’m so glad capsule wardrobes and sustainability are now in vogue because finally we are moving away from having to have new things for every occasion! I also love the idea of combining masculine to tone down the frills.

I like this french style rule that you wear one dress on a few occasions ☺️ Here in Poland, we feel pressure to look different every party😅. Although I don't like wearing masculine items🤭 and I don't inagine wardrobe without purple or pink clothes 😁 Some floral patterns can look so stylish and inspiring🙂

Very sensible advice. I always wear my things over again but admit to things I haven’t even worn yet. I like neutral colours but prefer brighter clothes especially in summer. I’ve started wearing maxi and midi dresses and skirt as I think cooler in Australian heat. I use to wear fitted dresses and still do but like comfort now.

What do you wear under the lace top to keep from revealing to too much?

You are one of the reasons why I had finally found my new style. D'être stylée et chic. Elegante et classe. Sois sexy mais PAS du vulgarité.

I tend to be remembered more for my clothes, at least in America. My friends and exes overseas all say my style is European rather than American. Most of my Goth pieces are just plain and simple garments and I let accessories and make up set the tone.
I don't wear sweats or yoga pants because I don't own any. Nor do I own pyjamas its all nightgowns. This prevents my going to sloppy mode. If I wear jeans or pants, I add a belt even if not needed. It adds a polished look. At this point, I can't afford much in the way of clothes, so I find myself getting creative with accessories to change up wearing the same clothes over and over again.
I do have a very small section of clothes that are Goth only. A retro 1910's style suit, pirate wench dress and a 1700's ish frock coat. Xmas gifts from the last holiday.

According these rules I am a French woman, except for the colours. I love a little more colour in my life. It had to be me being Italian.😉

That is so true that we should wear outfits we love time and time again! 👌 So many times I've bought items that I love, only to keep them in the wardrobe after only two wears incase somebody would notice and think that I didn't have enough outfits. 😆 I'm definitely not going to do that anymore. Instead I'm going re wear everything and just change up the accessories, shoes etc and be more clever with fashion. 👍

I have reached the age that I know what I like and what I don't and what I don't sits in my closet, things I love to wear I will wear constantly. And constantly get compliments on them because they make me stand taller and move prouder. I tend to agree about French women love and other women hate. We are taught that more is more and french women prefer less is more. Show less skin, leave more to the imagination, own less clothes but more of things you love to wear. Wear timeless and you don't have to continually spend on items that will be out of style in a year maybe two. I spend less on my wardrobe and have more that I am thrilled to reach for in my closet. Have a skirt I bought is a great brand cut beautifully, made well and have dressed it up and down worn it countless times. It is a basic piece but it is also something I find myself reaching for constantly because it can go with everything in my closet.
