Wonderful video! So truly, this reminds me on a quote from Karl Lagerfeld. He was once asked about elegance and expensive clothes. He replied "there are women in Africa who are wrapped in simple fabrics and carry clay jugs on their heads. They walk with more elegance than you can ever imagine". Thank you Marie Anne.

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated”~Confucius. Literally, this print hangs on my bedroom wall, next to my closet! I rarely wear more than stud earrings, either tiny diamonds or tiny gold studs, my wedding band, and my watch. That’s about it. I’ve always thought of my watch as my jewelry. Simplicity is a way of life. Why we strive to complicate matters is hard to understand. You have to be careful about whose advice on style you’re listening to. You’re always my go-to French chic lady. Justine Leconte is the only other French chic style expert I will even watch. Thank you so much! Xx

This video makes me grateful for my grandmother. When I was a little girl she always wore a beautiful brooch on her coat. She wore pearl studs in her ears and her engagement ring. I asked her why she didn't have more jewelry. Her advice: it is better to keep in a few beautiful pieces you will cherish forever or that were gifted with meaning than to buy and wear cheap costume jewelry. This made an impression upon my mind that has lasted until today.

As a woman who has loved clothes & accessories all my life, even as a young girl, I am finding as I get older (65 now), I am simplifying more these last several years, sometimes just wearing my fav hoop earrings I have in both gold & silver, & maybe a couple rings. When I do wear a necklace, most of the time I will skip bracelets...etc. I guess I am evolving!

One of my most vivid clothes shopping memories is when I was trying on these fabulous black wool flannel dress trousers in a boutique in London (straight cut, side pockets, belt loops), and stepped out of the dressing room to see them in a bigger mirror -- I asked the proverbial question "but what would I wear with them?" A very fashionable English woman who was shopping with her daughter said "Do what French women do! Wear the black trousers with a fabulous classic white shirt tucked into the trousers and add a classic black leather belt!" I was shocked at how SIMPLE the solution was. I bought the trousers and wore them at least once a week with a wonderful blouse / shirt in a basic color (many times a silk blouse - light grey, camel, dark blue/green were some of my favorites), added black leather booties & a black leather belt, and always looked smashing. Keep It Simple!

You just made me realize that simplification is very very imoprtant, not just for style, but for mental hygiene as well. Every time I lust for a new piece of clothe, I am stepping away - not closer - to closet happiness, because by acquire it, I will take away excitement for the pieces I already own, and be forced to deal with the overload, forced to discard, forced to choose later on. So for one minute of pleasure as I buy a new piece, what I am really doing is setting myself up for even more morning frustration and nothing-to-wear anxt. A new piece adds to the mental load, doesn't free it. Wow, thank you!

  • @beverleyroberts1025

I agree, it seems be a trend now to layer jewellery, and honestly it cheapens the whole outfit. One piece of classic jewellery, a gold watch, a simple row of pearls, or a classic pair of earrings, less is more! Neutral colours for your outfits and the only splash of colour, red! 😄

I like the black dress in the video , they are so handy, I have several of them in my wardrobe, they can be dressed up or down, the pink in the video is my favourite color, it may not be popular but I would wear matching pink earrings, necklace, bangle , ring and handbag all in the same color , ( and I get a lot of compliments ) I usually only wear dark colours in winter , dark blue or black remind me of uniforms or work wear , although I see them worn a lot, when there younger women make a effort to look nice but something happens when they get older , they seem to lose interest in looking good right at the time when they need to be working harder on their appearance, it is so worth it!!!

Justine Leconte mentioned the Christmas tree thing just the other day!
I think the Kibbe system overcomplicates things, and I have chosen not to use it.
A very kind lady who owned a boutique in my small town once showed me a very simple linen sheath dress. “But what do I DO with it?” I asked.
She said. “Put it on and WEAR it. If you take good care of it, you can wear it to my funeral”

Honestly my true style is classic, clean, stylish and well made items BUT I have struggled as a Canadian to remain true to my style because culturally fashion influences and the “more is more” vibe is so overwhelming. I often feel “boring” compared to how others dress when I know when I see myself that I look chic and appropriate. I feel as though I was born to live in France but here I am in Ontario Canada. My style has always been simple and classic. I tend to stay away from trends and will not buy something that I know I will only like for a moment. My best compliment came when I was on a work assignment in Paris. The ladies in the office took me to dinner and as we were relaxing and making conversation they told how much they admired my style and asked where I shopped. They were going to be coming to Boston and wanted to visit the same shops. I thought I must be doing something right, if these lovely Paris ladies want me to take them shopping. 🙂

I think simple is classy! A beautifully cut garment that hangs perfectly and fits very well. A pretty watch, a small ring and stud earings. Maybe a single strand of pearls or brouch but not both at the same time. Of course not too many colours all at once either. My mother taught me this and my grandmother taught my mother. I have been following your videos with great interest and have been carefully building up my French chic wardrobe. Today I tried shopping following your advice and bought two beautiful tops from Jaegar in the sale, one is a marinier! So stylish, so simple and yes they fit perfectly with my French chic clothes. Thank you so much I feel so much more confident.

Since I have been watching your channel, I've noticed how complicated dresses and tops are here in America. Busy neckline, prints and adornments. When the weather changes here I like to add a scarf and jacket. It's harder to find simple but interesting garments but you saved me lots of money avoiding mistakes. My wardrobe is becoming smaller and curated. I love it now, thanks.

Thank you! I have been overwhelmed with some body typing and energy typing, but simple really suits me. I love that you remind us that clothing should compliment us. It’s important to let our face and personality get the attention, and not really our clothing. I really appreciated this reminder.

Marie Anne, great video, for me I am an old gal full of confidence and wisdom. Between you and me I dress accordingly to how I feel that day. Sometimes simple and sometimes like the museum of Versailles, totally ornate. lol. Anyway keep bringing us these educational videos, this information in valuable mainly to the young audience. Thankyou.

The patterns at school, in our dress making classes (which were the norm in the seventies) were called simplicity. We used Bernina or singer sewing machines. Mum made the dresses and skirts, knitted our cardigans.

👏🏻👍🏻 Ah, I am re-titling your video: THE BEST STYLE ADVICE EVER ... !! FIRST PLACE AWARD !!🏆 Also, I laughed so much, and before you even said it, I was thinking, 'a Christmas tree!' - you inspired me to laugh so much as I am always thinking the same thing when I see those who are over-complicating their 'style' ... 🤣 I agree, indeed, keep it SIMPLE and one will look and feel one's best. I sometimes have thought that 'simple' just escapes others as they focus on complicating everything, including wondering why someone else always looks so well-put together. Merci, Marie-Anne, for another important video to share so others will know: KEEP IT SIMPLE. 😘 xx

Love this and agree 100%. I often feel like I can't wear prints because I have naturally curly hair. I honestly feel like textured/curly hair is an accessory. Is that crazy? I only wear minimal, small jewelry pieces. In fact, I have very little jewelry in general. Less is more. Love your videos and content. It's a pleasure to watch you while I enjoy a glass of red wine. Cheers!

Great video! I dress pretty simply, with not much jewelry other than rings, and small earrings and a plain leather strap watch. I have been asked many times if I am French. I'm 100% Irish, but from America. I always take it as a great compliment when people assume I am French,..the je ne sais quoi is very admired here.

Dear Marie-Anne Leceour, do you know what. I like your advice so much. Each day I leave house men look at me (at least one a day) I am visible just by dressing simply. Yesterday I bought me a red lipstick and I‘m going to wear it. It‘s a long time ago since I wore such color. Thank you so much and tell us more about French style. Although I am Austrian do I like your habits. Most of us run after the latest fashion and even some of us don‘t care about appearance.

I use The Rule of 8s. Count to 8: count one for each of these: each color, each pattern, each detail, (like belt, scarf, tassel on the shoe, or hair clip, or nail polish), each pattern, and then count each piece of jewelry (earrings count for 2). Should add to no more than 8. Simple rule.

Best advice I have ever heard. Unfortunately, a lot of people are actually trying to sell products and talk us into buying too much of everything! The more we buy, the more $ they make. I have stopped watching a lot of channels who are giving advice to purchase things. Makeup, skincare, clothing, etc. After awhile, their videos seem like one long commercial. I truly appreciate your honesty and great advice. Thanks!

Great advice, thank you so much!!! So true about all these complicated things. My mother has great sense of quality and style. And she grew up and was living in a Sowjet Union for decades - there was NOTHING nice you could buy. Yet just by traveling abroad a lot and looking how people look in France she developed great sense for fabrics, colors and cuts. I hope I will be able to pass these lessons to my daughter🤍
Please keep aducating us, that is very precious❤

Hi Marie-Ann. Thank you for putting simplicity into perspective. You clearly outlined what it entails. Simplicity can be taken to so many levels of one's life and helps to focus on the important elements of fashion, food or whatever you are doing. Can be a valuable tool to organize and manage one's life. True that we get confused due to information overload. Simplicity is the 1st step to dress timeless and chic. Great advice and nicely done. Thank you.

This is just what I needed! I've done so many online style courses that recommended larger jewelry for my hourglass shape. Unfortunately I don't care much for accessories in general and statement necklaces specifically. I'm very much a classic watch and understated jewelry kind of woman. Since I've been watching your videos I've focused on quality over quantity and have put together a list of classic pieces I need to add to my wardrobe - in a limited color palette of course!

Elaine Marsh I was thinking the same thing. I watch her video to add some tips here and there, but I have to keep true to myself and what I like and makes me happy. I do not want to be French, I’m an American, if we all look like a French woman, where’s our individuality? Our own culture? I use her tips to acentúate or add a little something different but not to become a French girl, i want to honor who I am!
