  • In today's video, I look at the Marshall JVM 205C. The JVM range is Marshall's flagship range of amps with midi switching dual master volumes and digital reverb. In this video, I look at both channels with the 6 modes to see how it sounds.
    JVM205C
Intensify your tone with the JVM205C. With three different modes per channel, this 2x12” 50W combo can take you from clean to high-gain overdrive and anything in between. The pairing of one Celestion Vintage 30 and one Celestion Heritage speaker creates a warm, powerful blend that perfectly complements the amplifier. Whether you’re experimenting, performing or recording, this versatile amp is the complete package.
    KEY FEATURES
    SIX DISTINCT SOUNDS
Two channels, each with three gain modes, gives you access to a wide range of sounds and almost-endless options for refining your tone. Along with the three-way EQ in each channel, the Presence and Resonance controls let you shape the tone from the power amp.
    THE HEART OF YOUR RIG
Connect a host of effects pedals and other external gear within the JVM’s two effects loops. The first loop is adjustable to let you perfectly blend your effects and original tone together. JVM amps can also receive and repeat MIDI commands for ultimate control and synchronising with the rest of your setup.
    STAND OUT SOLOS
Use the two master volumes and built-in reverb controls for exhilarating solos. Instantly recall your mode and reverb settings with the programmable footswitch (included), giving you power and flexibility exactly when and where you need it.
    SILENT RECORDING
Take your sound from the stage to the studio with the flick of a switch. With the JVM in silent recording mode you can hook up to an interface or mixing desk to capture that perfect take.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

I have the 210H and it’s hands down the best Marshall I’ve ever played.
I tend to stay on the crunch Red channel and boost it with a Timmy set fairly clean with a bass cut, I find this gets rid of any ‘sediment’ and cloudiness in the red mode and it’s just like a fantastic 800 rock tone.

Love my 2012 JVM 215C, and not just because it has my initials on it. I use the clean channel with just a touch of dirt and boost it with an OCD and Lovepedal Eternity. I also run a line from the effects loop out into the effects loop return on a modified (effects loop added) '68 Bassman. The Marshall pre-amp through the Fender power amp sounds incredible!

While you are at it, how about the Marshall DSL40 Combo. It has Clean/Crunch, and Lead1/Lead2 channels. It has great cleans and gets very dirty for a lot less money. Each channel has it s own reverb also.
If you do get to review it, perhaps use a Boss OD-3 instead of the Tube Screamer for a boost, or if you cannot get your hands on one, then a Boss SD-1.

  • @IamMusicNerd
    @IamMusicNerd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

For my money, the most versatile Marshall ever made was the Valvestate line.
It’s an analog solid state amp with a tube amp’s power section, tuned to sound and react like the old Marshall tube amps. I have a 1997 VS30R 30 watt version. It is insanely loud like a tube amp, but unlike a tube amp, it still sounds good at lower volumes. So at home I can dial it down to 2 without having to use an attenuator, and it still sounds just as fantastic as when its on 8 or 9 at a gig, just at a lower volume. And it’s far lighter than a full tube amp.
The clean channel is incredibly clear and brighter than most Marshalls, almost like a Magnatone amp’s clean tone. The Drive channel has the classic Marshall grit. There is nothing fancy though. No effects loops, no midi, etc, just separate controls for each channel, but it takes pedals extremely well. Definitely the most versatile Marshall I have ever owned.

I have the 205 h and 4x12 1960a it really can nail jtm jcm and beyond its a criminally under estimated amp. It sounds amazing and has more gain than most hard-core metal heads will ever use and the cleans rival my fender amps.when this series was released it was way ahead of its other counter parts but was over looked because marshall had been kinda late to the game and relying to much on its older series . The Mesa and 5150 craze had been going on while marshall was still counting on the jcm 800 and jcm2000....in the midst of the high gain movement so I think marshall had been out of alot of the people's mind for a while but this is a master piece of a amplifier in my opinion it can really do any sort of genre . The foot switch is fantastic and way ahead of the curve . Maybe it was Marshall's marketing ? I dunno but they can keep their evh and mesas and the rest I'll keep my marshalls

I have the same model, 50W 1x12. All JVM models, including this one, are capable of great tones even on low volume settings. This is one of big advantage of these amps, you have one amp, which you can bring to rehearsal room, use it on the noisy stage, and you can also record it without turn it up to max. And, you should also practice at your bedroom on the same amp, without tinnitus and bleeding ears.

I have the JVM410c and its an incredibly versatile beast - more so than the 205. It has 4 channels (Clean, Crunch, OD1 and OD2) with each having 3 modes like the 205 but obviously you get more Channels. The Green Clean is very Clean and then you get a different gain structure with Orange/Red giving a bit more crunch.
The Crunch channel has that JCM800 and a hot-rodded JCM800 options for me, then the OD1/OD2 get more and more 'Gain'. So you have everything from the 'very clean' to ultra High gain all in one....

I might be wrong but i think this is an upgrade on the DSL40. That has all the same features and layout except 1) separate EQ for clean and OD channels and 2) the DSL reverb is a bit wimpy. For those of you who agree, i got major improvements in the reverb by sticking a TC Spark in the front of my pedal chain. It seems to boost the reverb which was always on 10 but now seems ample at 5. As for the 2 EQ controls, do Marshall really need to charge the 100 extra for a better reverb board? One other issue with the DSL (not alone here) the on off switch light packs up. Not a real problem when you can see the channel selector lights.

It's a very sophisticated but bit of backline, considering it is really just a crunchy Marshall! (By which I mean, it's not a modelling amp or whatever... It's just a valve amp with typical modern Marshall front-end gain..)
    - You demonstrated it really really wonderfully BTW, keying in on its primary features.
Now, I kinda disagree with one thing, as I happen to be playing a super-tight JTM45 set real clean, like fine bone china! 🍀 but I will admit that there on the JVM sounds amazing from this end of the recording! Enough that I intend to examine it again next opportunity.
It does sound characteristically Marshall-clean to my ear though, I have to say.

Buy a £99 Harley Benton MFC-100 or any cheap midi controller and you have full switching control over this or any JVM amp. It’s like owning a 6 channel amp. With midi you can have any mode and combination of the panel switches recalled in an instant and you don’t need any midi knowledge. Every amp should have midi but it doesn’t. Marshall had the foresight to make this amp midi capable and leave the others in the dark ages regarding switching. . The midi footswitch itself is a mild annoyance for about 5 minutes until you set it up. I have the 215c and it’s the best sounding amp I have ever owned, and I’ve owned a lot of them. This blows them away for the sheer amount of classic amp tones in one box, and with midi, it’s mind blowing what can be done with a basic simple midi control.

@@nedim_guitar I’m not really sure, if you can hear the difference during blind test with tube amp and one of today’s top end digital solutions. Don’t judge digital technology by your experience more than 10 years old ... analog vs digital photography is the great example of possible evolution of this stuff. First digital cameras were heavy, complicated, overpriced, and produced poor image quality. Lot of professional photographers claimed there is no way use it for serious professional work, this is only an expensive toy ... and look around today, almost nobody using classical photography technology. I’m sure tubes will stay here more than 100 years, but most of guitar players will use digital amps.

@@michalkysel4351 I'm not saying that digital is bad, I've used it more that analogue stuff, I've used modellers more than tube amps. Hearing the difference is impossible already. But feeling, that's another story. But yeah, the way this amp sounds, the way it's built, the way it reacts, from what I saw in the video, that is a whole different level that is very difficult to recreate digitally.

I`m sold on this amp. Know, there are two versions; the JVM215 with 1 X 12" and the JVM 205 2 x12" Celestion. Which one to buy? Is it worth the price difference?

Hi Paul, I just returned the DSL40 because clean channel didn't impress, alot to do, I think, with the reverb being almost non existent, does the JVM have "enough" reverb in your opinion ?
If not, can you recommend which Marshall series might have more reverb capability than the current lineup (...I read a few forums claiming the JTM 60 gave great cleans, not sure how good the Reverb was.
I prefer not to use pedals ,like overdrive & reverb all in one unit) Thanks so much for the demo, sounds great my ears thus far.

The JVM is really usable with the twin reverb. The reverb sounds great but it is a digital reverb. Personally I prefer a digital reverb to spring but some don’t.

Not so fast!! This amp was improved drastically be Santiago Alvarez....the Joe Satriani JVM 410...deals with all the flaws of the original 410H....the to copressed sound of the standard as opposed to the open sounds of the JS is a great point...Gain has been improved to be able to go past 6 I had both of them and I can tell you they are aplles and oranges especially on the inside...the best sounding amp I ever owned was a modded 69 Plexi...when I lost that I thought I would never get that tone again..and I never did...UNTIL I got the 410 JS...I base a great amp on many factors one of the main ones is if it doesn't have a clean tone it wont have a great Metal tone....the standard had more git and not in a good way....the green channel of the clean channel takes all kinds of gain pedals and is very pedal friendly..yet I never see much info on the JS...I play lots of Metal but I also play many other styles...from chicken picking stuff to classic rock....I need an amp that will do it all extremely well....I do like the 6100 also....and until the runaway bias fried the DSL 2000 that was a damn great sounding amp...and when they reissued it with the so called fix it sounded like Shite.
