Marshall JVM - Marshall's Best Amp?

  • The Marshall JVM is probably one of the best amps that's ever been made. However, since it's a "Modern" Marshall, many treat it with fear and revulsion. It also has a reputation as ONLY being a high-gain monster. Yet, plenty of gain fanatics ignore it because Marshalls don't have enough modern gain.
    Everybody is wrong. The JVM is amazing. Let me explain and show you why.

    That's the best deep dive I've seen on the JVM410H. I have had my JVM410H for approximately 7 years and I love it. I never did understand why some don't like it. It did take me some time experimenting with it to learn all the possible sounds this amp is capable of but once you conquer it, there are no limits. This video has given me more ideas to experiment with. As you stated, this is a very loud amp and my favorite Marshall.

    FYI, the JCM800 are 80's versions of the mid to late 70's 2203, 2204 heads. The 2205 and 2210 were the 1st channel switching amps w/reverb. Also, there was the "mod" craze in the 80 folks wanted more gain. Enter the JCM900, Marshall's answer to the Soldanos, Bogner, Rivera, Dual Rectifier, Lee Jackson amps. Also, Ampeg, Crate and Yamaha had high gain guitars amps too during the 90's.

    i would agree with most of these comments if i didnt own a 6100 LM. THATS the definition of a sleeper. three channels of individual controls. four modes of crunch channel. a rediculous number of knobs on front and back but they're all functional and useful. the creamy but tight high gain is the THE best you will EVER hear in any amp. i don't even use pedals other than an eq. yet its largely unknown and unmentiomed.

    Great vid, I swapped out the V1 pre-amp tube to a 12AU7. That really brough the red modes down to a much more usable gain range. The JVM410 is for sure a keeper amp.

    Great vid!! It’s a one channel amp for me. OD2 Red through a HW412 with EVH’s. Gain never past 10 o’clock, usually 9. Backs off to a really nice, dynamic clean that still has some great sting to it. I do live in a forest and diming clean green is quite the unusable experience! I went through a GT75 loaded 4x12 or Compact Recto 2x12 V30 with a Jensen 4x10. Such a great amp. I bought it for $1k. That’s a Uk price. My first Marshall. ❤️‍🔥

    Marshall had some great amps post-JCM800.Jube, 30th Anni, JCM900 Mkiii/Mkiv (2100 and 2500, the all valve ones, not the mostly solid state 4100/4500). JMP-1 preamp. Agree the JVM is a nice amp , but they should have stuck with the option of the Satriani version.
    Guitar players are strange sometimes in complaining that Marshall haven't had anything new forever but bitch that it's not the same as the old stuff. Could always be like Mesa and keep repackaging the same amp time after time.

    • @aftermathstudios3717
      @aftermathstudios3717  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the worst part about Mesa is that they don't TELL people when they're changing the amp. Nor do they advertise when they've done it. So they'll just come out with a new Revision of the Recto and wait for people to notice.
      There's been a few quiet theories there's been a number of MkV revisions that have happened behind the scenes without people knowing.

    Its an amazing amp, I find it comical that guys will get a mesa mark series amp and totally forgive it for sounding awful in 98 percent of settings, and then bash this amp for needing some understanding to get it to its full potential.

    Hi mate. What’s your thoughts on staying on the green channel and using pedals for crunch?

    • @aftermathstudios3717
      @aftermathstudios3717  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's definitely feasible if you find the right drive pedals! Green mode loves pedals so go for it.
      If you're going for Metal, you might find it not tight enough, but for pretty much everything UP to metal it's pretty killer.

    • @shaneleek
      @shaneleek 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ta mate. I just want some versatility for a rock covers band. Grinspoon, Angels, Pearl Jam etc. I’ve got a tS9, OCD and a Xotic EP boost and a carbon delay. Any thoughts on signal chain or should I push the gain channel a bit instead

    • @aftermathstudios3717
      @aftermathstudios3717  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@shaneleek I GENERALLY prefer amp Overdrive over pedal overdrive, but OCDs are pretty great. With that lineup, I'd probably sit on OD1 Green and use my volume control on my guitar to roll back gain when I needed to.
      Alternatively, Crunch Green with a shitload of gain from the OCD will probably get into good Pearl Jam.
      OR:
      Crunch Orange with the OCD will probably get you there and be a bit more aggressive.
      Long story short, the JVM is EASILY capable of all of the above

    I've had one for about 3 years. The green channels are pretty much the only things that sound good. When you use a tube screamer for your main distortion on the green channels - THEN it sounds great. You can bring the distortion up some on the amp without it being too thin or just crapping out (there's a really thin line there). When I first had it, I was using a 1960A cab with G12T-75's in it, and it couldn't have sounded crappier if it had to - regardless of channels or ANY setting.
    It was bad enough to where I got a Peavey Invective - and even with the G12T's, the Peavey blew the 410H out of the water. Still - I wasn't completely impressed with the tone, so I stuck two V30's and two Creamback G12H-75's in it, and BOOM. THERE it was!
    Anyways, I hooked up the 410H up to the new speakers about a year ago, and good GOD did it sound better with the new speakers! I cannot even believe Marshall still sticks the T's in their 4x12's. They're just awful. The 410H is (obviously) extremely sensitive to speaker selection - far more so than the Invective.
    Still - if I get on the 410H on green modes on channels 3 & 4, it sounds damned good using distortion in front of it. To me - the orange and red channels are just unusable still, though. They're noisy (even with noise gates), and they don't have the "balls" I'd like. And still - if you turn the gain on those channels up anymore than 9 o' clock, they just mush out.
    In the end, I'm going to keep it to use as a backup, but the Invective still pretty much wins out fairly easy...

    I’ve never placed anything on top of my Marshall JVM 410 H, for fear of it overheating. I know you shouldn’t cover the grill on top with a blanket or something. The Jubilee has a great EQ section and a really good effects loop. I will admit it is hard to balance the clean and overdrive channels and like an 800 you have to get it fairly loud to really hear it roar. The silver control panel is quite hard to see as well.
