    Great video. Glad to see you made it to this part of the world. Btw, you left out the Cham in Vietnam and Cambodia. They are the remnants of a Malay kingdom that made up most of South Vietnam and was conquered by the Vietnamese in 1471. Their culture is still pretty much Malay and their language is mostly mutually intelligible with standard Malay. Numbering at 300k, they are a fairly large minority group in Indochina.

      Not sure whether you guys have been to Pahang and Terengganu, but you should try them if you haven't. They are quite under rated as compared to KL, Penang, and even Borneo. Both have the longest stretch of beach in Malaysia and perhaps some of the most stunning ones too. And the plus side is, not many people hangout on some part of the beaches. But be cautious and don't swim in Terengganu because the steep shores have claimed many innocent lives. However, you can find beautiful islands with pristine beaches that you can swim, snorkel, scuba diving and even just relax (sunbathing) in Terengganu such as Pulau Redang, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Kapas, and Pulau Lang Tengah (pulau literally means island). But if you are short of time, you can swim straight away in Cherating beach which is located in Pahang. The ambience in these Eastern Coasts of Peninsular Malaysia can be so laid back and you can experience the "Kampung" (village/country side) hospitality if you try your best to mix around with the locals. And if you guys happened to have more time, try to visit Kelantan state as well to complete your East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia trip. Hope you guys will be back to Malaysia when this pandemic ends.

      Hello Mohd, i am from the Philippines and i was just curious about the lessons being taught to you there in Malaysia about the origins of Malays and Bumiputera people. Here in the Philippines, children are being taught a theory that various waves of Malays and Indonesians migrated to present-day Philippines and thus became the ancestors of Filipinos. The author of that theory was Otley Beyer, an American professor who migrated to the Philippines during the 18th century and thus many Filipinos believe that we are considered "Malay".
      However, thanks to the works of William Henry Scott and recent, more accurate research findings, Beyer's theory was rejected and the Austronesian "Out of Taiwan" theory became more accepted. Unfortunately, despite many accurate proof of the Austronesian theory, many Filipinos cannot let go of the Otley Beyer theory and still refer to themselves as "Malay/Malayan".

And recent research mentioned there are possibilities that Malay ancestors migrated to Taiwan since the Malay before well known as seafarer.

    There's a noble family name in Samoa (where I'm from) called 'Meleisea'. Samoa is the cradle of Polynesia and was settled around 1000 BC. This might give you a clue to the meaning and antiquity of the name Malaysia, as Samoans and Polynesians in general are part of the Austronesian family.

    • @solehsolehsoleh
      @solehsolehsoleh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I don't think so. The word 'Malaysia' is not a word from malay language. The word was Invented by Western anthropologist. Other than that the name 'Malay' itself is the English name for our race. In our language, we are 'Melayu',

    • @Daxkalak
      @Daxkalak 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Strangely enough, by Western scientists adding the suffix "sia" after the word "Malay" (I just Googled it), they might have accidentally stumbled on the original meaning of the name Malay via the Samoan culture. On the Island of Savai'i in Samoa, there exists the oldest monumental structure in the South Pacific called "Pulemelei". It's a pyramid or mound made out of rocks. When curious foreigners ask the locals about its meaning some reply that long ago the mound was used as a platform for catching birds, likely reasoning this because they are associating the Samoan word for Trap/Snare "Mailei" with the "Melei" in Pulemelei. But I think Masaman's connection between the Tamil word for mountain "Malai Ur" and the word "Malay" lies behind the name and meaning of the word Pulemelei. Pule in Samoan means Chief or Leader, so if Melei really means Mountain/Hill, then Pulemelei would mean "Mountain of the Chief".

    • @Daxkalak
      @Daxkalak 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Or the word Pulemelei could mean Chief Mountain, or Supreme Mountain/Hill instead.

    Malaysian and Indonesian are nationalities. Saying some Malaysian has Indonesia heritage is kind of absurd considering every ethnicity can be Malaysian and Indonesian by law. I am an ethnic Malay with Minang and Javanese heritage residing in Malaysia. That doesn't make me having "Indonesian" heritage because my Minang ancestors migrated to Malay Peninsula before the existence of both Malaysia and Indonesia.
    Malay, Chinese, Tamil are ethnicities.
    Malaya is a region also known as Peninsular Malaysia.
    The reasons we are Malaysians, Indonesians, Singaporeans and Bruneians today is because of colonialism. We're the same people, or atleast we're all Malayic, descendants of the Austronesians.

    Fantastic video! Glad to have found it. I am originally from Latin America, and have been living in Singapore and travelling extensively in South, Southeast and East Asia for the past 7 years. As a brown-skinned person, one of the most pleasant surprises when coming to this area was being able to travel in many of these countries and pass by a local by just saying a couple of words in Bahasa. Malays are warm, friendly, welcoming people, and because of all the mixing you mention it is that I can mingle and enjoy their culture, food and natural wonders. Yes, there are racial tensions everywhere, but for the most part people are wonderful. Now, one thing that is a bit of a blur is the concept of Melayu people, and how it has become entangled with Muslim identity over the past decades. Looking forward to more of your videos!

    Southern Thailand (Songkhla, Satun, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat) is part of Malaysia in the past... At that time this country we call Malaya. thats area/region was under the rule of the kedah tua empire. It is ruled by the sultanate in the north of malaysia.
    But in 1821 the malay people had to fight against the Siamese empire and the British empire simultaneously. The war was called the war of the whisper.
    We fought 20 years against them. The two great powers were fighting against our country and nation. We finally are conquered by them.
    There have been numerous series of small wars and even post-war protests. Finally in 1911, our country and land were handed back to us. And these five territories have been permanently separated. as a result of the British colonial and siamese empire agreements at that time. Satun district (nicknamed "Setoi") is my village. Every year my people have to visit our own homeland in another country. History is never forgotten, but it is taught.

    Many times people get confused on the terms Malay, Malayan and Malaysian. Malaysian is a nationality regardless of ones ethnicity i.e. not all Malays are Malaysians, not all Malaysians are Malays. Malayan is the people of the country Malaya, the predecessor of Malaysia. Meanwhile Malay in Malaysia, as mentioned in the video in 8:20, is a "pan-ethnic group based on shared culture, language and religion", whereby Malaysians of Javanese, Buginese, Banjar, Minangkabau and even of Arab descents may (officially) be considered as Malay. Otherwise, Malay in Indonesia is a specific ethnic group, which concentrates mainly in Sumatera and Kalimantan. And then comes the term "(Greater) Malaysia" as mentioned in 7:04 which has its own connotation and context, but this is another story.
    As for the title of the video, I think the term Malays is technically more accurate instead of Malaysians, but I understand there may be reasons to use the term for this particular video title 👍👍

Also, the Cape Coloureds have a significant admixture from the Cape Malays (often both are grouped together into one category). Sometimes it's hard to visually tell whether someone has more Khoisan or more Malay ancestry, because Khoisan and Malay share some physical traits (yellowish skin hue, eye folds). aborigine tribes here in Peninsular Malaysia. But most of them have been assimilated in greater Malay society, civilized and no longer live in a deep
      jungle. Some of them have entered into a tertiary education and owned career.
      The picture on what you see is for cultural purpose to attract the foreign guest
      and yes they still preserved their ancestral heritage. Don't get it wrong. They no longer wears skirt made of dry leaves or carrying any blowpipes. They dressed like us, wearing shoes, ride a motorcycle or drive a car. Their settlement comes proper bricked house with electricity and clean water, schools, groceries, community center, worship place and many others facility provided by the Malaysian Government under Department Aborigine Affairs. @@datukrajo1807 May I know how old are those Kedukans? I'm a Malaysian Malay and from my reading and understanding, not all Malays are originated from the Sumatera region. In fact, some of the oldest Malay kingdoms in Tanah Melayu, such as the "Kedah Tua", "Gangga Negara", "Chih Tu" and "Pan Pan" emerged as early as 2nd Century. And there have been some population of the Malay people in Tanah Melayu even before the rise of those kingdoms which I have mentioned earlier. You can check about "Tamadun Sungai Batu" articles, which sometimes can be very "highly heated" with claims from some Malaysian Indian (Tamil people trying to claim) that their ancestors are the ones who built those historical places, which of course is nonsense (Lol). In Tanah Melayu (Peninsular Malaysia), there are actually three types or categories of Malay people, but the majority of us here are not aware of this because we simply don't care much about it and it is not in our Constitution. Only those who are keen enough to study or read the history of Malaysia and its people will know it. The three types are: 1. Melayu Jati/Asal = These are the Malays which are the descendants from the old kingdoms which I have explained earlier (modern day Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan & Terengganu). 2. Melayu Dagang = These are the Malays of which their ancestors originated from Sumatera and its nearby islands. The majority of their descendants live in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and could also be found in Johor, Pahang and Perak as well. 3. Melayu Peranakan = These are the Malays of which their ancestors have mixed marriage between the Melayu Jati or Melayu Dagang with foreign settlers or traders which the majority of them originated from the India Muslim traders. You can find them in Pulau Pinang (Penang island). They are also known as "Mamak" or "Anak Mami". Some Melayu Peranakan have heritage from Pakistan, Arab, Persian, Chinese and many more. Besides Indian Muslim (and to some extend Pakistan), other Peranakans are not called as "Mamak" or "Anak Mami".

      @@quiasnoorzad unfortunately, many Filipinos are taught that "Malay Race" and "Ethnic Malay" are the same. The "Malay Race" was introduced by Otley Beyer and because the term "Austronesian" during his time was not in use, he chose "Malay" to name the groups of Filipinos, Indonesians, actual Malays and other natives of maritime Southeast Asia. So it would be more accurate to refer to Filipinos as "Austronesian" instead of "Malay race". Also, go to Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The ethnic Malays of those countries will be surprised when they hear that Filipinos are Malay 🤣. Malay is an actual ethnicity where aside from race, language, customs, culture and religion matters. Yeah, its also funny when Filipinos (mostly Fil-Ams) claim that they're Polynesian/Pacific Islander.

      There's no broadly agreed upon origin for the word. Malay is Melayu in the language so the similarities with Malai might be circumstantial. Another theory is that the word comes from melayar (root word layar), which means to sail which makes sense as most Malays were either sailors or fishermen back in the day. Adding the prefix me- to a verb turns it into a continuous action. Interestingly, in Modern Malay, melayu (root word layu) means to wither.

      The Sultan of Kedah leased Penang (1786) and then Province Wellesley to the British at the end of the 18th century.
      Thailand invaded Kedah in 1821 and Kedah remained under Thai control under the name of Syburi.

      In 1896, Kedah along with Perlis and Setul was combined into the Thai province of Monthon Syburi which lasted until transferred to the British by the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909. Later, Kedah became an "unfederated Malay state".
      In World War II, Kedah (along with Kelantan) was the first part of Malaya to be invaded by Japan. The Japanese returned Kedah to their Thai allies who had it renamed Syburi, but it returned to British rule after the end of the war. Kedah joined the Federation of Malaya in 1948.

Orang asli is malay bumiputera who do not socialise with modern time and keep their old religion. Malay modern today are describing as muslim, speak malay languange and practice malay culture. Historically, most of the kingdom in details are budhhas. If any hindus culture on those time, you should ask the portuguese and dutch who destroy our malay historic. As a Chinese Indonesian with some mixed raced heritage (Hakka, Teochew/Cantonese, Acehnese, Mandailing, and British), I gotta say it's the other way around.
      For 'foreign orientals' as they were classified in colonial times, there's the Chinese Indonesians (mostly Southern Chinese), Indian Indonesians (mostly Tamil and Sindhi), and Arab Indonesians (mostly from Hadhramaut, Yemen).
      There's also European Indonesians (mostly mixed raced from several different nationalities like Dutch, French, or British. But also some full blooded European settlers in the past). Those with family origins in colonial times mostly relocated to Europe, the US, Canada, and Australia. But a new generation is present in Indonesia from mixed marriages with western expats.
      Within the 'native' or bumiputera/pribumi population there's hundreds of diffrerent ethnic groups. Mostly Austronesian Indonesians like Batak or Makassaran, but there's also the Melanesian Indonesians from Papua and Maluku.
      Some names of famous Indonesian and their diverse ancestry;
      - Rich Brian (rapper of Chinese Heritage)
      - Irfan Bachdim (soccer player of Arab and Dutch heritage) and his wife Jennifer Kurniawan (model of Chinese and German heritage)
      - Pubjabi brothers (arguably Indonesia's most known producers of Sindhi heritage)
      - Basuki Tjahaja Purnama aka Ahok (former governor of Hakka Chinese heritage)
      - Harbrinderjit Singh Dillon (politician of Sikh heritage)
      - Nadiem Makarim (Founder of one of Indonesia's top start ups; Gojek. Of Arab heritage)
      So there is tons of diversity in Indonesia. Even phenotypically. In the first place it's not possible for such a huge population of 264 million people spanning 17,000 islands to be a monolith.

For strangers, usually you use Bahasa Indonesia. But if you know the person speaks the same bahasa daerah or bahasa suku as you, then you just use that. For example, people will ask where you're from in Bahasa Indonesia. And if you're both from Central Java, then usually you switch to speaking Javanese. My family are Chinese from West Borneo, where the bahasa suku is Tiociu and Hakka. So if we run into someone who shares those bahasa suku, then we just speak that.

    Correction..Malay doesnt originated from Sumatra..we are Island people whereby intermix were extremely common at that time. Yes you can find more Malay in Indonesia than in Malaysia but the peninsular of Malaysia was sacred being the only strip of the Malay archipelago that is still attached to the Asia continent and was the first ancient kingdom in the world. Infact, the rainforest in Malaysia is the oldest rainforest in the world ( older than amazon) .20 000 years ago were 1 land called Sunda Continent (malaya/borneo/singapore/indonesia/ phillipine) however a huge volcanic eruption and earthquake had causes the land broke into many islands we know today..
    Edit: south china sea (SEA) in between borneo and peninsular of Malaysia and Phillipine were originally called Sunda sea. After colonisation of the European the name changed to SEA. China is currently disputing the territory with Phillipne and Malaysia despite the location is clearly in favor of Malaysia/Phillipine as this sea contains high quality minerals ie petroleum
