I just came back from seeing this movie in the cinema and it was one of the best cinema experiences ive had. It was disturbing, intriguing and also a dark comedy. The messages, Frankenstein tone, surrealism and overall cinematography and sound design of this movie was impecable. The characters were also so rich and interesting too!! Also, I just knew mark ruffalo from marvel and I got really impressed by his acting here. (I wont even say anything about willem defoe or Emma stone cause their amazing acting was to be expected.)
I cant wait for the awards it will recieve. I just really love artistic/different movies since I'm in art school myself. I will DEFINITELY be re watching this movie many times to see the things I missed.
I suppose it can be a bit overwhelming to some people in the first watch
Fun fact: I went in the cinema totally blind and got really surprised when they went to Portugal, Lisbon (I'm from Portugal and i was sitting in a cinema..in Lisbon lol.)

Emma Stone is brilliant in this movie, but Mark Ruffalo, whom I normally don't care one way or another about, makes it for me. He is so f*cking funny in this.

Many people are saying that the doctor (Godwin) IS Frankenstein’s monster which is why he referred to his “father” doing all of those horrible experiments. I think that’s so interesting

    This film is art
This film is like a view of the future from the perspective of the Victorian era
I know it's based on it's own book inspired Frankenstein but it's probably the best Frankenstein in decades
I get a David lynch vibes from this film

You two are completely right in the fact this movies humor is very similar to Leslie Nielsen type humor

This one. The dark comedy actually worked so well. It was disturbing and surrealistic but it was actually really damn funny when it wanted to be. I also found it fascinating how they made the audience sympathize and feel sadness over the death of a character such as "god". Hes just an amazing character
Im glad you guys enjoyed it aswell and that the nudity/sexuality of the movie didn't bother you, it shouldn't have anyways.

I haven't seen most of Yorgos Lanthimos' other films (gotta get on that), but I have seen The Favourite, which also stars Emma Stone, as well as Olivia Colman (who won a Best Actress Oscar) and Rachel Weisz. It looks like it's going to be a classy period movie set in the 1700s but like Poor Things it's an off-kilter comedy with sexual intrigue and cynical humor. I like Poor Things but I think The Favourite is even better.

First off, this is one of the most visually beautiful films I have ever seen. The heavily stylised production design is ravishing and the fish bowl cinematography is always stunning.
I admit that the episodic structure becomes somewhat taxing but the latter third picks up the pace somewhat and is far more engaging than the prolonged Parisian 'business' scenes.
This is elaborate farce raised to the level of high art or vice versa depending on the viewers propensity for weirdness or their wry disdainful regard of 'art for art's sake'.
It is genuinely funny in an arch way, the dialogue is richly affected/effected in it's delivery and Emma Stone's captivatingly dead pan performance is well deserved of her Oscar.
Mark Ruffalo's scenery chewing counterpoint to Bella's existentialist chutzpah is a pantomime critique of the bourgeoisie and the absurdity of manners in polite society.
The ever magnetic Willem Dafoe is the real scene stealer here as the benevolently deranged Godwin. The dark, comic pathos in his portrayal under a strata of prosthetics is hilariously pitch black and a masterclass in comic timing. His line about requiring the equivalent power of North London to stir his loins had me laughing well into the next scene.
The Frankensteinian hubris of a flawed creator and his creation's exploits in the cruel, exploitatitive world serve to highlight Bella's naife moral compass and it is all the more effective in it's dispassionate study of her.
There are philosophical face offs where reasoned nihilism is pit against single minded pragmatism in the battle for Bella's 'soul'. I'll steer clear of the nest of vipers which is the inevitable debate on feminism and empowerment in a patriarchal society because Bella's autodidactic 'journey' is a character arc both in and of itself and ultimately it's a satisfying one.
Metaphors are bold throughout and at times my annoyance at some of the director's more indulgent, outre scenes had me eye rolling and chuntering at the outrageous folly of it all. That however is part of it's charm, there's a hypnotic dance sequence midway in which frankly the film needed at this point.
The soundtrack for me had prolonged passages of what I can only describe as art-house belligerence stamped through it like a stick of particularly piquant avant garde rock candy.
I couldn't recommend this movie for everyone, it has all the flavours of an ostentatiously rich and surreal confection of which the viewer asks like Duncan Wedderburn's suggested dinner question of 'How do they get the pastry so crisp?'
