There's something called the Napoleon Dynamity problem that describes how computers cannot anticipate the eccentric ways that real people actually decide to take a chance on a movie. This one and others like it, mostly quirky independent films, polarized people, they either loved it or hated it. In 2006 Netflix gave a $1M prize to the team that developed the formula that improved the accuracy of the Netflix movie recommendation algorithm by 10%.

It took me a while to figure out why I enjoyed this movie so much, and I finally realized it's because the character of Napoleon Dynamite is probably the most dichotomous character I've ever seen. He's simultaneously what none of us want to be, i.e., socially awkward, but also who we all really want to be, genuine, honest, loyal, indefatigable. I love that the character of Deb recognizes this--she gets it. My favorite scene is the end when Napoleon asks Deb if she wants to "play him" in tetherball, and she does, and she essentially lets him win, and Napoleon and Deb high five each other. That, my friend, is a power couple that will be able to overcome every challenge life throws at them.

I worked in a video rental store at the time and we got to take movies home before release date, so I grabbed this movie on a whim and was giggling like a jackass while watching it. My mom came over to see what was up and a few minutes in she just shook her head and said it was the stupidest thing she'd ever seen. An hour and twenty minutes later she was still watching, and now twenty years later she STILL quotes it constantly. It really is a remarkable film XD

26:51 Funny true story: Back in my high school days, a fellow student with red hair I knew named Adam climbed a fence and fell the exact same way. It was me, him and several others from a class that had an assignment that required us to go to the track and field outside. There was a gym class going on at the time while we were out there. They were playing flag football or something of the sort, I can't remember exactly. Someone threw the ball to where it went over the fence. So Adam volunteered to retrieve the ball. He then proceeded to climb the fence, just like Napoleon did, he slipped and fell the very same way! And this happened just mere feet away from me. I know I shouldn't have laughed at his expense, but I couldn't help myself because it was hilarious the way he fell. Anyway, he came back over, ran towards the gym class and the way he threw the ball back to them was just as funny to me. That's why I laugh so hard when this scene comes up lol. 😅

When this came out it was so popular that there was an understandable fatigue and backlash against it due to the incessant quoting, but even upon first viewing as a teen it struck me as having a much deeper setting than any other contemporaneous comedies. You really feel like you're in this Idaho town where time is stuck and you're witnessing these kind of sad, average people go about their lives. So it's beyond a comedy in my opinion.

Every reaction video comments on the age difference on the bus ride.
It’s not uncommon in small towns for high school jr high and elementary kids to ride together. Fewer kids, fewer schools, fewer buses. And just like real life, MOST high school kids were driving themselves or carpooling with friends so seeing only 1-2 high school kids per combined bus wasn’t out of the ordinary. My bus in jr high was mainly jr high kids and maybe 3 high schoolers.
