Original Movie: Poor Things
I have to say, while Emma’s performance was courageous and exemplary and worthy of praise, I feel the world has somewhat overlooked Mark Ruffalo’s incredible turn in this film. The devious, devilish facade masking deep insecurity and fragility is played with such delicious comic effect. The two of them together are marvelous.
I'd also add Willem Dafoe to the mix too, who was remarkably subdued throughout. Actually the MVP of the movie overall for me was Willem (who would've been my pick had he been nominated), although I'd have voted for Ruffalo among those who did get nominated.
Honestly Ruffalo should've gotten the oscar over Downey. His performance was transformative and so fun to watch. Also Dafoe should've also been nominated.
@@novarunner34 Couldn’t agree more.
Yeah, I think because first time around the viewer is somewhat unsure of Ruffalo and just how far he's going to go in exploiting her, it makes it difficult to read him as just a comedic character. On a rewatch when you've effectively written him off as a threat he is absolutely hilarious, a bumbling rich fop.
I think Mark deserved best supp actor over RDJ. I feel like RDJ's win this year was the same as Jamie Lee Curtis's last year, neither actually deserved it. But it seemed to be for the accumulation of their work, which I disagree with. It should be based solely on that film, role, year, and category.
Love this movie so much. Emma said it best for me when she accepted her golden globe “this is a rom com, but in the sense that bella fell in love with life itself. She accepts the good and bad in equal measure and that really made me look at life differently” Such a deserved oscar.
Her performance is immaculate, she deserved that Oscar so much !
yeah especially when she's standing there naked asking if the guy is going to finish going down on her. yeah real talent there.
Already one of my favorite performances of the decade so far.
I agree. I saw this on Hulu after she won the Oscar and I was very impressed by Stone. She literally goes from an infant like state to a fully educated, self-aware, and self-confident person over the course of the film and she also has to play every stage in between as she discovers more about herself and the world around. That range is so insane to have to comprehend and do convincingly.
Whoever thought that charismatic girl from Easy A would go on to be such a prolific force in the industry. Emma is something to behold in this film, and she absolutely deserved her Oscar
Yeah way before that, that girl is Jules from Superbad 😂
So well put! She ABSOLUTELY is, and ABSOLUTELY did! Such a masterpiece!! ♥️
I actually had that feeling about her from superbad, that she was going to make an impact. I hoped she would be hugely popular from my first exposure to her work. Her talent is undeniable, one of my absolute favorite actors.
I saw Paper Man in 2009 an I was 100% sure she is going to win an Oscar. I did not guess she would become a producer and one of the most courageous performers of all time.
She's a pocket full of sunshine.
love RDJ and what he did in Oppenheimer but Ruffalo in this was easily my Best Supporting Actor choice, he’s so fucking great in this!
Nah
Agreed
We’re all forgetting the real supporting actor snub and that’s the kid from Anatomy of a Fall
you saw Zone of Interest twice back to back in theaters?? 😮 @@anthonyc3496

NOW I CAN'T WAIT to watch the original with Patty Mullen as FRANKENHOOKER, not this remake. Judging by the Trailer she does just as fine of a job as a newly reborn reconfigured monster. It has to be more satisfying of a film than Poor Thingamajigs! th-cam.com/video/8-LQ01M32LA/w-d-xo.html
Duncan throwing Bella’s book off the deck and then the lady handing Bella another book and then that one getting thrown off, gets me every time 😂

@@LeviBulger I’ve watched it once but Nat and a couple other reaction channels
Mark Ruffalo and Willem Defoe are always a win.
Yes yes
They're both something of a scientist (2,002 points if you get that reference).
Well deserved Oscar for Emma Stone. Mark Ruffalo was so funny, also. Very refreshing to see him in an unconventional role
Emma was great in Birdman too. Introduced to the talents of Emma Stone was that double tap, zombie flick where Bill Murray got shot... Zombieland?
@@ssotkow As much as I loved Emma Stone in Zombieland, I can't deny Zoey Deutch stole the show in that one.

The vast majority of the film doesn’t have nudity
@@awesomness36I watched it in theaters with my mom. It made all those scenes feel 10x longer cuz it was so awkward. We both went into the movie just knowing it was going to be a Frankenstein-esque story. Now I know to check the imdb parents guide to make sure it’s suitable to watch with my parents 😂
They cut out a couple key characters in the process that ensured the edited review made sense. Well done.
Emma’s Oscar was so well deserved (although Gladstone winning would’ve been equally great!) as well as those wins for Production/Costume Design and MU&H. One of my favorite movies of last year.
This movie made me laugh harder than any in a long time. Just great writing, acting, and direction...they knew exactly the tone they wanted and nailed it.
Yeah, it hits the tone of the book pretty well, well it doesn’t quite get the more horror aspect, but it does get the dark humour and social commentary sex farce quite well.
Mark Ruffalo’s character was so much fun to watch
This was an unalloyed delight! So glad you enjoyed the movie - I've enjoyed previous Lanthimos films despite a streak of cruelty that runs through them, but this was the first of his I've seen with moments of genuine kindness and empathy. It's an extraordinary film, visually stunning, funny and shocking as hell, thought-provokingly transgressive, and in the end deeply moving.
Probably because he didn't write this one. It's from a book.

This and Oppenheimer definitely deserved their Oscar wins, two of my favorites from last year. Emma gave an iconic performance
Yep two of my favorite films of the year and wildly different from each other. but both very deserving of their Oscar wins.
Went into this movie blind and felt so many different thing. Such great cinematography, acting and editing. Such an eerie score. And the story is just... so crazy. Loved the movie, but was a very awkward watch since I watched with my parents...
“… with my parents.” Wow, that sentence is possibly most intense sense fremdshämen I’ve felt in a while.
Omg I watched this with my dad last night and it was such an uncomfortable experience. It went places I definitely didn't expect.
@@bidishah it's mostly just masturbation scenes for me...especially that long one, where she sits at the table and...well...you know the rest...
Have you seen THE FAVOURITE (2018) (same director with Emma Stone also being in the cast, along with Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman)? I found that to be way better than this in my view. Funnily enough, Olivia Colman won Best Actress for that one (the director Yorgos Lanthimos is on something of a streak with these 2 movies winning that category).
@@axr7149I have not. My mom's birthday is the reason we went to the theater to watch this one. There wasn't really anything else out at the time and we saw great reviews, comedy and drama and just went for it since there was nothing else out at the time.
2023 was one of the best years for movies in a long time... Poor Things, Barbie, Oppenheimer, They Cloned Tyrone, Killers of the Flower Moon, Zone of Interest, and so many other amazing movies that I can't think of right now.
ruffalo effortlessly steals every scene hes in
Yeah of the supporting acting nominees this year I thought he had the most impact good or bad. I loved seeing him get into a character again
Effortlessly being the key word. For an actor who has been typecast into romcoms and the reductive superhero genres, his more recent work in I Know This Much Is True (playing identical twins) and in Poor Things last year really demonstrate what a deeply talented powerhouse of an actor he is. That face plant that Duncan takes on the landing within Ruffalo's first 15 seconds of screen time is the absolute, sheer commitment of an actor who trusts their director implicitly. What a joy to watch his performance!
If you like this movie, you'll definitely like The Favourite! You'll really start to understand the director's style and choices and Emma Stone is in it again lol and delivers another great performance as well as Rachel Weiss, Olivia Coleman, Nicholas Hault, and Joe Alwyn! But when it comes to Poor Things, this is probably my favorite movie that came out this year! This movie was made with passion by all the people involved and it shows. Emma Stone was also a producer in this movie and had a heavy hand in a lot of choices made. I know some people thing this movie is just weird or vulgar, but I think people need to understand that sometimes life is just that: weird and vulgar and maddening and sad and happy and something to experience, just like this movie. This is Bella's experience of life from the mindset of a child who knows nothing of the world, but as a full grown woman, so her journey is gonna be different than that of a newborn baby's. Thanks for reacting to the movie!
This was fascinating from start to finish. I could not look away. The acting, the cinematography, the score, costuming, just everything is amazing.
Emma Stone and Mark Ruffolo are incredible in this movie. Ruffalo’s character is such a loathsome character. So easy to detest him. And “I must go punch that baby” might be one of the best movie lines ever
Poor Things was ruined by Ruffalo's TERRIBLE English accent. It's as bad as Dick Van Dyke's accent in the original Mary Poppins.
@@lold6130 It's not an English accent, it's just an accent.
Bahaha the Ryan George “super easy, barely an inconvenience shout out”
We're all just waiting for Poor Things' Pitch Meeting 😂
I recently just saw the film and I have to say that it is one of the most interesting and unique experiences I have had watching a film in a long time. Highly recommended film.
This movie was so interesting! I think of it as a sort of (more) modern Frankenstein tale. And the cinematography, production design, costume design, makeup, and acting were amazing!
Like Frankenstein it hits some notes of social commentary as well, but I’m afraid it’s visual style for some made people focus on the “wtf am I looking at here?” rather than some of its deeper themes.
@@joeb918 yeah thats for the simpleton thumb people who have gotten us to fuckign 10 fast ad the furious movies....cars in space..... this movie is slightly hitting the surreal level ( something like Beau is affraid) but far far more comprehencible. the people who are stuck on that would get lost reading Dr Sues
The production design is the reflection of the world from Bella's point of view, and it changes as she changes. In the beginning, there are aspects of the house that look strange. The chairs at the table are too big, for example, in the same way that chairs look very big to infants. When Bella returns, inside the house looks normal, an indication that Bella has grown up.
I always enjoy your reactions, you say you're not an intellectual, but I would disagree. You are analytical, and you have a high level of social and emotional intelligence. 🧡
She knows she is intelligent. She's just being humble.
Definitely one of the most creative and craziest movies I watched in the last 5 years or so. I love it so much! A stunning and definitely a deserved Oscar Win for Emma Stone for this role.
My favorite movie of the year!!! It's absolutely insane & just a heck of an experience! As someone who adores Frankenstein & everything around it, this film is everything I wanted! Emma Stone deserved all of the awards...just a brilliant & iconic performance as Bella! Dafoe & Ruffalo also knocked it out of the park...LOVE THIS MOVIE!😎
18:47 that’s actually a really good point that I noticed too, she’s always in the protection of wealth and her privilege. Those around her are taking advantage yes, but she’s also sheltered from the reality of others and the outside world. From being sheltered by God to adventuring with Duncan, she’s with a wealthy men where abuse and mistreatment of Bella happen but not to an extent that she’s in danger.
When it comes to being “poor” and Bella becomes a working woman, she has that hidden money from god but after Duncan takes it she’s still forced to do men she doesn’t really want to do. However the movie shows this as her working out methods to make the interactions somewhat interesting to her. Then upon hearing Gods dying, she can up and leave France and head home with ease; as if it’s her choice to leave whenever from that situation.
The abusive husband was a threat but then he wasn’t really a challenge for Bella after all, and she presumably collected his belongings from the marriage plus Gods belongings and then her being married to Max. Bella essentially grew into a role of a wealthy white woman that apparently has been showed that the world is cruel but there’s nothing she can do to change it, so just sit back and relax in her own little world.
on the flip side, she took control of the matter when she became a prostitute, she was in control then, no more protection really or richer comforts, she was still being taken advantage of at that point but she was getting hers too.
I also think that period where she was a working girl kinda of seperates stages, the first where men are taking advantage of her and the second where she is doing her own thing. and when she starts doing herr own thing and follows her own interests and seperates from duncan, she learns, and because of her mannerisms she didnt follow what the women of the time did where they essentially felt they needed to please men to get by. she had no qualm cutting Duncan and moving on, she told it like it is and expressed herself. I think that leads to the point with the general where she just realizes she is smarter than that guy, like he hands her chloroform, something that doesnt have to be consumed to have effect XD he's just dumb and she knows it.
This is in my Top 3 movies of the year… with May December and Anatomy of a Fall.
Everyone in this movie is at their best, and Yorgos such a creative director. Glad you watched!
That scene where Bella finally comes back home and sees Godwin again is a masterclass of acting from two extraordinary performers. I love every second of this movie.
Liked the way you put it. Her evolution throughout the film was incredibly well paced and acted. Visually stunning. The entire direction of this film was crisped. But give my guy Mark Ruffalo an Oscar! Underrated actor.
mark ruffalo was so funny in this movie, one of his best performances
I LOVE the costume design for this movie it’s so beautiful
one of the most creative movies ive ever seen, saw it in theaters and was blown away
I was so happy to see you reacting to this. I was not disappointed. Such a great, quirky film. I love the score. Like a child composed it with toys. Emma destroyed this role. Well deserved award.
After watching and loving this movie myself, and then seeing some incredibly hateful, misplaced articles pushing for it to be treated as incorrect towards women, people with disabilities, and others, I turned to your reaction for a balanced view. So thank you. Whew. There must be a diagnosis for some people (not you) being so compelled to point fingers, they find fault in all media. And then when they can't, there's always the catch-all of pointing to what's NOT there and claiming 'the filmmakers had a chance to explore XYZ but missed the opportunity.'
In my opinion, you did a phenomenal analysis of Bella Baxter's character, her journey through life, and her interactions with men and the other people around her. I saw this movie with my 28 year old daughter (I'm 67 years old) at the Angelika East Village theatre. My daughter was more shocked than I was (not ready for what she saw in the film especially all the sex scenes with Bella). I thought the entire film with its characters and exotic exaggerated over-the-top places was so surrealistically beautiful. Everyone has their own taste in films. I am just so used to seeing a lot of crazy indie films. Therefore, the film did not bother me that much because I went home and saw "Poor Things" three times again on Hulu. A great "ride" of a film, pun intended. ♥
Loved this movie. Emma's performance was magnificent. And Mark was fantastic as well, absolutely hilarious. Yorgos is a very creative director, and the technical aspects of the film were all on point as well. From the costumes, cinematography, production design and score as well. Emma was absolutely gorgeous and lovely in this film. Terrific movie.
I love the steampunk genre
I'm extremely torn about Poor Things. On the one hand, it does look really good & well directed & acted & all those things, so I absolutely understand that: but on the other, transposing the story & characters from Glasgow to London really leaves a sour taste in my mouth given how much of a love letter to Glasgow (and Scotland as a whole) the book was. Alasdair Gray spent his life promoting & elevating Glasgow as a literary & cultural place deserving of respect & recognition. He was coming from a time & a place where Scottish people were told that if they want to make something of themselves, they had to go to London, viewed then & now as the true metropolitan city of the British Isles. Gray, in his work & his own life, rejected that, & did everything he could to celebrate & support Glasgow & it's people.
To effectively undo all of that by transposing the story to London - the very sort of thing he argued against - really rubbed me up the wrong way. It'd be like setting Les Miserables in New York, or Zorro in Madrid: you're just missing so much context in the transposition.
Which is not to say adaptations can't change settings (hell, one of my favourite adaptations of Shakespeare, Ran, isn't even in the English language, let alone England) but the Scottishness was central to Gray's work, & I just wish we could've had an adaptation that respected that before we got the big departures.
can we just comprehend that the film isn't a copy of the book, is this so hard to accept it?
i feel the exact same way, i almost didnt see the movie on purpose because of this. i found watching it with the context of knowing its roots helped me enjoy the movie more than i would have otherwise. it is genuinely a really really good adaptation despite being taken out of its original setting.
The amount of people that did not truly grasp the message of this film, and chose to go straight to being offended missed out on such a good creation
@@frfras7 the defiance of societal norms, the astounding double standard in sexuality between men and women, and how society punishes women for the very behavior which we reward men. Personal growth and subjugation from the men in her life who were infatuated with her until she developed opinions and wants of her own. People would rather focus on the sex acts than why she was engaging in those acts, and what they meant, and in many cases didn’t mean to her. She was given the opportunity to develop and grow without societal persuasion. Something that both men and women in the real world never have the chance to do.
I just watched this recently and could not get it out of my head ! Thank you for covering it :)
Of the dozen or so reactions to POOR THINGS I’ve watched, yours is by far the most insightful, thus far.❤
I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie and was completely blown away. Emma Stone has come a long way and she shines in this performance.
You should also see the parallels to the Stanley Kubrick style of filmmaking: long zooms, tracking shots, discomforting music choices, contrast between carnal flesh and violence.
I Loved your comments! Especially the part about the trope born sexy yesterday. I found that movie so empowering and optimistic!
So glad you reacted to this!
10:45 "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised"
In a weird way, this is kind of a comfort movie for me. There’s something special and kind of wholesome about watching someone discover life for the first time. It’s almost like all of the ideologies the others pose are just taste tests for Bella, who doesn’t necessarily fit into any of them. Her blissful ignorance can sometimes come off as blunt but how can she be rude if she doesn’t know what manners are?
Editor did a great job with this reaction. I imagine this was tough to edit because of all the explicit scenes.
i really appreciated your commentary on this one!!! especially to have come straight out of the movie with all these thoughts, not having discussed it with anyone prior.
i first watched this on Good Friday with my parents 😅 which might've tainted my viewing experience a tad, but i didn't really like it at first. watching this video absolutely helped me appreciate the cinematography, the acting, the direction all the more. thank you for sharing!!

You hit the nail on the head! It baffles me how many people think that this movie is just another “born sexy yesterday” trope, while it really turns it upside down and mocks it. Poor Things may easily be the best film of this decade!
You absolutely have to see The Favourite as well. And the TV show - The Great - McNamara (who does the Great) paired with Lanthimos for The Favourite.
After all these years, someone finally made Rochelle, Rochelle into an actual movie.

Oh you HAVE to watch The Favourite
Great reaction. I was excited to see that you'd reacted. I enjoyed this very much.
I had a great time watching this with you. One suggestion for you, I don't know if anyone who reacts to and reviews movies and content has ever done the short series Penny Dreadful. I thoroughly enjoyed that series. A mix of Turn of the century literature, Horror, and discovery. The Acting is impeccable with the cast of Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Josh Harnett, Billie Piper, Patty Lupone, and others. I really think you will enjoy it even if you don't use it for content. Keep up the great work.
Thank you very much for your great reaction to a film that many have felt has a challenging storyline. BTW, please don't put yourself down because I really appreciated your insights during the film. Emma's performance was absolutely brilliant, and she fully deserved her Oscar. The rest of the cast were great as well. I was so pleased that the film did so well at the BAFTAs and Oscars. I'm very happy that my two favourite films of year performed so well at the BAFTAs and Oscars.
Talking about Favourites, I certainly recommend that you watch "The Favourite", I'm sure that you will enjoy it,, once again, the cast gives top performances and Olivia Colman picked up a shock best actress Oscar (BTW if you haven't seen her acceptance speech, its well worth a watch, indeed her acceptance speeches are always worth watchung), in a similar way to Emma Stone picking up, to many a surprise Oscar.
my favorite of the year!!
I really enjoyed the movie, the soundtrack was so strange and appropriate to a forming mind. What would happen if adults were never conditioned with shame, but just allowed to be curious. You'd get Bella Baxter.
Another great movie from last year is The Holdovers, which just won at least one Oscar. I haven’t seen many reactions to it.
Wife and I saw this in the theater with very little knowledge of the film other than it was hailed as great and it had two of our favorite actors in it: Stone and Dafoe. And man, it wowwed us. There was zero doubt about who would run away with that best actress award.
I liked the film but it's only really part of the story if you've read the book, and it's noteworthy given how many of the criticisms of the film boil down to "what the hell is this morbid hypersexualised nonsense?"
So the book opens with a prologue with Alasdair Gray, the author, discussing the discovery of two accounts of the same story. There's a really interesting exploration of subjectivity here where he ponders how we'll be influenced depending on which he presents to us first, but that's a side point.
The first account - the bulk of the novel - is the account written by Archie (in the film Max) McCandless, and it's this account that the film broadly adapts, in all of its 19th century gothic tropes, the grotesque premise of his wife Bella's "birth" and then the hypersexualised journey of her self-discovery.
The second account - shorter, functionally an epilogue - is the account written by Bella Baxter, the *real* Bella, to whom none of the wild fantastical things happened to. Her reaction is, essentially: "what the hell is this morbid hypersexualised nonsense?" Their reality is much more mundane, and she reflects on how it's better living in the real world than in some fantasy land.
I did like the film, I think the portion it adapted was as well done as you could've made it, but it's a bit frustrating that it decided to bask in the fantasy when the wider context and point of the book had a more critical framing.
Hi Natalie! Looks like another great reaction is underway. Love your videos, and I hope you're having a good day!
I knew very little about this movie before watching it but I wish I knew even less about it before watching it because letting it unfold without any knowledge would’ve made it a hair better.
The gasp with dinkus amazing.
I do think Oppenheimer deserved Best Picture but I will rewatch this movie more often because of the performances, wardrobes and general artistic style
I agree. I think Poor Things is the more inventive film of the two and is the one I think I will adore more in the long run even though I really do like Oppenheimer.
I saw this in cinemas with both my parents because my Dad thought it was like a Lady Frankenstein movie and I was seated in between them. I don't think I've stared at the ceiling of a cinema more.
WATCH LA LA LAND!!!!!!!!!
This movie was wild! I saw it in theaters. This was a fantastic reaction.
I appreciate you and thank you for making content.
love the analysis at the end natalie!!!!
a real breath of fresh air.
The only thing I would have changed is putting Godwin's brain in Alfie. This would give him the chance to live the life his father deprived him of. Also it brings the story full circle with the creation recreating her creator...
That's exactly what I thought as I was watching it for the first time but then I realized there's something deeply human in coming to terms with death. Godwin didn't resent his father either, or acknowledge as trauma everything he put him through. And that's ok too.
At the end of his life he was happy with his achievements, but not the scientific ones, rather the weird family configuration he was able to find. The fact he could really connect with others instead of always rationalizing his feelings. The fact that Bella became an independent being surrounded by empathetic (yet flawed) people.
It also says a lot about Bella's growth how she didn't keep Godwin alive for selfish reasons. She allowed him to die, while he allowed her to live. I think that brought everything full circle IMO
@@i.shuuya3231 some good points there!
Glad you got the "Streetcar" reference.
When Duncan says he's going to kick taht poodle to death: biggest laugh of the movie. Also, 'that seems... low', is a good one.
Perhaps for October you could watch Frankenhooker. A far lower budget but rather comedicly similar in a very loose way.i loved this movie. Some interesting philosophical grist to chew on and visually stunning.
I forgot about that movie! 🤯
I'm glad you pointed out the Born Sexy Yesterday trope because the discourse of this movie has been exhausting towards people who dismiss this movie as being just "grooming 101" (ugh) which is not true. The fact Bella is the protagonist and the literal plot is her rapid growth skewers it; the problem when that trope is used is it doesn't focus from that person's perspective and ends up being an object. Granted, you *are* supposed to be uncomfortable knowing what Bella is, but if the movie didn't change that or left it unchecked, *then* the movie would have a big problem.
But I loved this; hilarious, offbeat, my fav performances from Ruffalo and Stone for sure.
rapid growth is not the same as actually earned maturity by age.
You cant put a child through all these experiences and say its now mature like a grown up. No matter how jaded it is.
Because thats what the movie sells at least unintentionally.
And even if that logic applied, she clearly is still at "self touching without knowing why" age when ruffalo gets to her.
And claiming that this is "just dismissing" the movie is dishonest. There have been may arguments made.
Its not like you have written a book backing up your argument here.
@@squattingheads Annnnnnd this proving my point.
It was definitely still exploitative. Although we are somewhat in Bella’s perspective she is viewed as an object by the men around her. She gains her autonomy but that doesn’t change that because she had a child’s curious mind she had been groomed
agreed@@squattingheads
You know that it can be written that way too right? Like you can make the person you want to influence feel like they relate to the protagonist. It doesn't provide a magical protagonist shield by being the protagonist. @@lonerdreamer92
