This is their most streamed song on Spotify because it's the song Opeth fans have to suggest to their friends as an entry listen... You can't just throw Serenity Painted Death at most new listeners🤷♂🖤❤😂
This whole album (Damnation) is like this. Mikael is quoted as saying they wanted to prove you could make dark and heavy music without distorted guitars or vocals. ❤
@@SoapSoapCrayon Steven Wilson would be in Stockholm on May 1st 2025. I have not yet bought tickets but am most likely going there. Last time I was in Stockholm for SW, it was the Porcupine Tree C/C concert and wanna guess who I bumped into on during the half-time break? :D Spoiler: Yeah, it was Mikael Åkerfeldt. :D Which, knowing their history, should not be all that surprizing. What was surprizing and amazing, was that I managed to bump into Mikael at Avicii Arena. There were quite many people there for PT. :D
This album came out 1 year after the most brutal of their career, Deliverance, they are twins, written at the same time and produced with Steven Wilson (both bands, Porcupine Tree and Opeth two of my all-time fav). Both albums incarnate the soul of Opeth, the one dark, intense, heavy, fast pace and the lighter, melancholic, melodic and mellow, both tied up in prog (death and modern on one side, '70ish on the other). So there is really a development in Opeth music that explains their later change, in this particular timeframe everything is more separated, maybe this explain your initial mixed reaction. As a long date Opeth fan (since their beginning) and a more metalhead one, when this album came out initially i liked it, but not so much, after a couple of listening became one of my favorites
Damnation is an amazing album with the most melancholic songs in Opeth's catalogue and Mikael's vocals are so good (all clean vocal album). As for not having learned how to read/write music in notation form, it's not quite as important as it might seem since many rock/metal musicians write down chords and know some music theory meaningful for their creative process. Btw., Opeth released a new ong, §1, from their upcoming album "The Last Will And Testament" coming October 11th.
This was released in 03 on the album Damnation. For me it marked a change of direction in their music to a more Prog sound. It was a sign of things to come. It's a great album, in fact it's one of my favorite.
I love all aspects of Opeth. As a massive King Crimson fan, and Metal fan Opeth ticks all the boxes of prog. I love Opeths, heavier early albums, but then I love the album Heritage as well. It's a great experience to listen to their albums in chronological order, all the way up to In Cauda Venenum. Essentially, you wouldn't even class them as a metal band any more. Let's see what the new album brings, if in fact it materialises?
I just about died when you compared Mikael to a macaque!!! Holy balls. Hahaha This is probably my (Jeremy) favorite Opeth album. It was what got me into them. This whole album is perfection. 🤘🏽😎🤘🏽
Gojira just did a bombastic segment at the 2024 Olympics. I forget if you have heard them before, but I think seeing that video would be a great dive into the study of Metal presentation. It includes an Opera breakdown (kinda sorta) whose voice you will love.
Really interesting take on things. I have always loved that he can sound like he is singing a baby to sleep whilst having the ability to turn into a demon possessed growl that can frighten children and adults! As you say, he might not be able to write or read music but it doesn't stop him from creating amazing and interesting music. Great video again.
More Opeth! Yay! This is the kind of music you might enjoy while lazily drifting along the river Styx. Remembering tragedy but managing to still accept the way things are. Or something like that.. :)
Good choise girl ❤ btw. I think the guy in the studio is Steven Wilson, from Porcupine Tree, who is also a music producer and publisher, and a music technician. Try Porcupine Tree, a lighter version of Opeth 😍 btw again Currently Opeth combines all the best in their own works: vocal aggression transformed into heavy hard-rock-vocals, musical lines even more demonic than ever. I recommend "In Cauda Venenum", an album from 2019. MASTERPIECE.
Just been listening to black rose immortal, opeth s longest song at ,20 minutes, epic stuff. Love all eras of opeth, including their newer prog rock sound.
Windowpane by Opeth is reminiscent of many songs engineered by Stephen Wilson of porcupine tree. Porcupine tree is another progressive metal band that you have to try out.
I really like when Opeth do this kind of thing cause they have a real talent for it. I love their slightly weird harmonic transitions. I just find it weird that when they made Heritage that they couldn't quite evoke this same kind of vibe - it just lacked 'something'.
I think your next stop should be Hessian Peel, from the Watershed album. I can't remember if you have reacted to that before, and I'm too lazy to search your channel. Sue me! 😆 Personally I prefer the more dynamic shifting stuff from them. I love it when they go all over the place. Someone also mentioned Gojira and their historic performance at the Olympic opening ceremony the other day. Gojira is definitely worth a deep dive. You might start with that Olympics performance (but be prepared to blur the video or the copyright demons will find you), or you could just do a normal song of theirs. I'm going to suggest four songs, all different, some heavier and more complicated, others more melodic (I'm not telling you which is which 😉). The Art of Dying - studio The Gift of Guilt - live at Brixton Academy Flying Whales - studio Global Warming - live at Silver Cord studio
I enjoy many of the spectrums of Mikael Music. Their newer stuff is a bit more hit and miss with me as they've changed their sound around quite a bit and gone into Prog more and more. Sorceress from the album Sorceress is for sure highlight of some of the newer sound.
I think I've mentioned this before, that Opeth hardly uses Crowl vocals on their newer albums anymore, because the music in general is getting softer, jazzier
I was worried that if you were a female that JD Vance might have a breakdown if he ever read your comment😂😂 Great band who can meet so many of my moods or feelings in different situations.
This is where the real Opeth sort of died off. This was the magnum opus of the band for many, with their drift into psycho prog instead of that smooth 70s prog that was their underlying tone. I remember when they tried playing stuff off the new album, everyone magically had full bladders that they had to empty. Hard to believe this album and song was from two decades ago when I had hope and I was a normal human being.
@@thevilifyingforce Not really, because there are many distinct Opeths, just like distinct Katatonias and other eras. I am 48 and I listened to the first album way back when burning churches were still KVLT. This is the wonderful thing about opinions, they are just that. You are more than welcome to yours, and I can have mine, and we don't have to resort to petty gatekeeping name calling. Note: I didn't say anything other than the real Opeth died off - which was true. More members left or were booted from the band, new instruments were added that were never really a part of the original build. Heck, even the original band that started way, WAY back in the day dissolved and left Akerfedlt with a band name and that was about it. I am actually glad they took the course they did because I went a different way on my own and just enjoy what I enjoy. Gatekeeping and all, if you were to be believed, of course. But then you don't really know me, do you? That's okay, it is the dog whistle of the metal scene. Keep burning churches, my friend!

3:42 - Hey! It's Steven Wilson!
Blackwater Park too! I probably listened to Bleak a thousand times before I realized that Steven sings whole bars on it.

Another one you should give a listen to is “Face of Melinda” I think you’ll love that one

That makes sense! Yeah I have a new reaction to it coming. God, I love Opeth. Thanks for watching my dude 🥰
one of my favourite hangover albums ever, I've spent many a Sunday mornings and afternoon chilling with this. :)

Wilson is the one playing the keyboards. Not to be confused with the studio engineers.
I think now you might understand my metalhead musing from months ago, about getting a little melancholic from Opeth.
Windowpane is reminiscent of Porcupine Tree… Porcupine Tree is another rabbit hole you should go down
You had me at Opeth rabbit hole 😊 thanks for watching my dude 💜
Steven Wilson behind the boards, so very relevant

Banged my head against the table a bunch of times so now I know nothing about Opeth and we can discover them together ;-)

Opeth just out here changing everyone’s chill time 😂

This video cuts off the 3rd verse and outro entirely
