  • Well Its finally warming up a bit around here!! It still might get cold again but i thought I might as well cut up some of the rocks I found last summer to see what they look like on the inside and to have some extra material to make jewelry with since I'm running a little low. Have a great weekend everyone😁

      Some ideas for future videos selfishly as I'm not sure it would improve your subscriptions 😉. Tools you use for hounding and processing. Your methods for determining how you cut, specimens you make polishing etc. As said by someone else definitely something with your finished products/collection (maybe it's been asked somewhere but do you have a website/store?). And some food for thought, you are very good at what you do so what may be simple to you is mind boggling to me. My main passion is plants and I've done talks. Took me a while to realize that 1) I know a lot, 2) people are eager to learn, and 3) people appreciate your knowledge and skill. Great work!!

      Oh ya, what kind of resources do you use to find possible sites? Do you just explore? Minmaps?

      @@comoxrox Thanks!! Those are all awesome video Ideas and I'd really like to give them a try!! I don't quite have a store yet but it is in the works, right now I'm mostly waiting on a logo and then it should be open. I'll definitely mention my store in my videos once it opens!! And about the last question, when I'm looking for new sites I'll generally look at a geological map, see what types of rock are in an area, research those rocks and what they could contain, then I'll head out and look for anything that catches my eye!!🙂

    Such nice rocks you cut! Also, being a retired cabinet maker I get nervous seeing thumbs and fingers so close to any saw blade. May I suggest using a piece of 1x2 against the back edge of the sliding table. Place the rock against the 1x2. This way the 1x2 does most of the feeding pressure. Your right hand like your left hand just guides the rock.
    So if something slips, much less chance pod getting your thumb in the saw blade.

    • @NWRockExplorer
      @NWRockExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a great Idea!! I'd either need to use stones with a flat face on the bottom or cut a flat face so the slabs come out evenly. I'm not terribly scared of this saw blade cutting me though, but one thing you don't want is for your hand to be caught and pinched between the blade and the table, might be a few digits less after that 😅

    They were all really nice, but the orbicular rhyolite was really cool! I also noticed that your hands were shaking really bad and your poor fingers were really red from the cold! There is still snow and ice on the ground, and your outside cutting rocks! I love to watch your videos, but not at the risk of your well being! If your trying to find something to make a video about, in the winter weather, maybe you could do one about your personal collection of rocks, or your favorite finds collection video, or a cabbing or jewelery making video, etc. Something warmer and inside?! Im a mom, i worry! Thanks for all your hard work!

      I've really been thinking about making a video on my personal rock collection, Its actually way smaller than most might think!! Most of the stuff I find is for making jewelry but with every site I keep the very best specimens in my collection just to look back on. I think I'll also make some wire wrapping tutorials in the future too, just some super simple ones to get people on the right track. Thanks for thinking about me by the way, I appreciate it!! Have a great weekend out there!!🙂

    The ravens agree, them be nice specimens man! Cheers! I'm thinking of buying a Dremel and cutting ends off smaller samples putting them in a vice grip.. Any advice? Cheers!

    • @NWRockExplorer
      @NWRockExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!! I don't really have much advice for Dremels. It really depends on what you're hoping to do, If you're hoping to carve designs or drill holes I'd definitely get a Dremel. If you just want some flat polished faces you could use the Dremel to cut the rock but I'd use some cheap eBay diamond laps and use them to polish the stone by hand to get a nice smooth polish😁

    Wow, that jasp-agate has some great colors and patterns going on! I always enjoy seeing what's inside. Thank you for doing all that slicing outside in the wind. Brrr! Can't wait to see what comes next for those rocks. Any progress on your little trailer?

      Thanks!! I really like that jasp-agate too!! There hasn't been much progress on the trailer, it's been frozen shut for a little while and i've been a little busy with some other projects. Right now I'm setting up an online shop so I can sell my jewelry and a few other cool products, just been getting stock ready and working on a logo, figuring out shipping, and gathering supplies. Now that its warming up a bit I am getting pretty eager to start working on it though😅

    Can you tell me about your saw? I am thinking about getting one but there is so much to learn

    • @NWRockExplorer
      @NWRockExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure!! Mine is just a 10 inch tile saw, and in a cheaper brand called king Canada. Honestly I didn't expect it to last too long but its still running after a couple years of having it!! If you are thinking about slabbing lots of rock I would invest in a true lapidary saw but for now this thing works for me. Also I would like to mention that tile saws aren't meant to be cutting rocks so it's a do at your own risk kind of thing haha😁

    • @NWRockExplorer

      A cab short for cabochon is a stone where one side has been ground down and polished to be convex on one side and the other side is flattened. The shape makes them easier to set into jewelry. I'd like to make a proper jewelry making video at some point but I think I'll save it for a rainy day when I cant get out🙂
