I've made my own jewelry since I was a teen. One of my favorite stones is clear quartz. When I buy quartz beads I buy only clear quartz beads with polished holes. They cost extra but it's well worth it. The clarity is stunningly beautiful. Sometimes I string the beads with clear monofilament & it looks like the beads are floating in the air. Other times I'll string the beads with a color coated, braided wire. The color effect is really nice too. I frequently grow bored with my jewelry, take it apart & make new, different pieces. Never a dull moment! That huge clear quartz stone that you cut & faceted is simply magnificent. Kudos!
I finally know what stone I picked up in the middle of nowhere. Its clear quartz. I was hundreds of miles from any town, so I knew it wasn't glass. I knew it had to be a rock, and thats why I picked it up. After 11 years, I now know what Im going to do with it. Thanks Matt, sick video!

Randomly showed up. Had no idea how much work and mechanical thinking goes into something like this. The result is definitely worth the work put in. Brilliant!
The geometry on this stone is incredible and the view into the stone after polishing the first facet was so cool. I think it's easy to take for granted that a stone like this needs to be cut by someone. Someone like you needs to put in many, many hours of extremely precise work for it to look the way it does when it's finished. I imagine that if you try to cut or polish one of those facets and the angle is off by even one degree it's gonna cause big problems. Considering all that just makes the finished piece even more impressive. This is so cool!
I've never watched a stone get faceted before your video showed up in my feed. I feel privileged to watch you turn that large rough crystal into a beautiful gem. Keep up the awesome work.
The same thing happened to me. He just popped up into my feed. However, everything I read about gem cutters is that they *need* to wear respirators to prevent silicosis.
When I was a kid, my mom told me I should be a jeweler but I always pursued other creative, artistic fields, however this, sir, wow. It makes me question my life decisions. Stunning, really.
I have heard about cutting gems of various types throughout my life, but to actually see the equipment and the process has been a real treat. The myriad facets, and their effects on the light is amazing. I thank you for allowing me to watch your work, while you explained the steps, and their reasons.
Please, you must still wear a respirator even though you're using water. Quartz dust is a known carcinogen, and it can be fine enough to atomize even in water mist.
2:18 there's enough dust there already to cover the working surface. Silicosis basically is like glass dust in your lungs. They go in, they never come back out and they create microscale trauma everywhere which leads to inflammation which both destroys lung tissue and can lead to cancer. Bacon is a carcinogen by extraordinarily weak epidemiological evidence from large scale population level reviews of people's diets, which are based on questionnaires where people estimate what they ate for an entire year. The mechanism is a lot of hand waving about nitrates and the WHO's recommendation was heavily influenced by "plant based diet" advocacy. Silicosis is extremely well established, irreversible, and an unquestionable occupational hazard. I've seen people in their 30s and 40s who need lung transplants because of it, from finishing artificial quartz countertops. Please take precautions. Nobody deserves that fate.
