    FYI: this saw slowly grinds away each stone, it doesn’t cut, its a very slow process. So I am not at high risk for losing a finger.. so no worries 😊

    When cutting stones, I only keep the best for further working. The rest I take back to the beach where I found them, and leave them in an obvious place. Kids love them they are like treasure, I know I would have flipped if I found them as a kid. I call it catch and release rock hounding.

    • @AgateDad
      @AgateDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      What if… you hucked them back in the lake… and go from time to time to see if it gets re tumbled lol how crazy would that be!

      @@AgateDad I have done that as well, but it gives me a lift when the kids find them on a log near the water.

    What is your set up for cutting the stones? Do you need a diamond blade or anything special?

      As rockhounding adventures happen and are successful, I will put those videos out, my next two videos will be rockhounding videos. Until then, check this one out: th-cam.com/video/SAQDfIdJzpQ/w-d-xo.html

    Great video…Curious what blade you are using on the HiTech saw. Does not look like the standard green notch one they offer. I have the same saw and am looking for something that will cut agate a bit faster but still give a smooth edge.

      I am using the notched Diamond blade, I have two, this one is not green like on the website but is the same. It’s pretty great, I’m hoping to use my thin sintered blade next to try that out 👍

    I live in New Zealand, I was given some beautiful big rocks of Jasper and other rocks, (can’t remember the names) by a close friend who passed away just weeks ago, I would like to cut them open to see the surprises inside. I’ve never cut any open before, can I use a ceramic tile cutter that has a water bath or do I have to purchase a specified cutter

    • @AgateDad
      @AgateDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use a tile saw with water but it may be more aggressive than a lapidary saw, so take it slow. Please let me know if you have any questions!

    How do you determine which direction to cut a rock? Are there indicators outside that hint wehich direction would be optimum for exposing bands? (Such as if they're oblong, always cut the long way. etc?

    • @AgateDad
      @AgateDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes it’s a crap shoot, other times I cut based off a theory of how banding will be inside, and sometimes just to cut the most surface area.

      All depends on what material your cutting but each cut takes anywhere from a minute to 5 minutes, I’ve had one agate in the past take 15 minutes
