Vespa 300 GTS - TAYM on the dark side

  • So many people have told me i must try a scooter. To my mind the only real scooter still made today it’s Vespa. I have had to wait a long time to get on one but the wait was worth it. Mototechniks, my local Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, Vespa and Yamaha dealer finally had a demo available. What I found was a well built, good looking and authentic scooter.

Great stuff Mr TAYM! Brilliant around town machine and good on the open road too. Plenty of room for a sandwich and thermos (or a pizza and bottle of wine maybe?) and some wet weather gear under the seat. Looks fabulous. Should be great on fuel. What more can you ask for! I've had scoots before and I'd have one again, so practical, and a Vespa would be very nice indeed. Just need an open face helmet, scarf and a pipe to smoke on the way to work and we are good to go!!

I’m amazed by how good scooters are. I have been riding over 40 years and never thought I’d ever get a scooter had never tried one never wanted to. Last year looking for something different I bought a BMW C400GT and love it for getting around. It is better spec’d than many bikes with ABS traction control an engine that’ll do 90-95mph and get over 70mpg. It has braided steel hoses, radial mounted Bybre brakes on twin discs. Keyless ignition with heated grips and seat. Used it right through the winter, takes us both easily at 70+mph on the motorway and has a 15” front 14” rear but they handle really well as they’re 120/150. I know how different it is when I get on one of my bike bikes but whilst I’m riding it I love it.

Nothing beats the practicality, easy going and performance of a 300cc sub 190kg scooter. They are fast off the line, super easy to ride, good weather protection, good underseat storage, good on fuel, good brakes and even on highways capable of 70mph all day long

In 1973 at the age of 17 I bought a Vespa 180 Rally. I loved it and it would keep up with just about any car on the road at that time. Imagine Ford Cortina, Vauxhall Viva, Austin Allegro etc. I'm not too keen on that twist and go version you are riding. Mine had clutch on the left handlebar and gears via a twist on the left handlebar. Would love one for local short journeys.

At last😂😂😂😂. Had honda c50/70/90 anf 125, xmax 250 and sh300, all semi auto or auto and used for commuting since 1974. They are easy diy, new scoots no chain to oil, xmax had fab weather protection. Been to Spain on xmax. Always had a motorcycle alongside but very often for local trips the scooters are my go to. So comfy. Not been on a Vespa type since was 17 but the jap ones are superb. My latest one honda sh300 is positively quick, so light and can filter and cut and thrust effortlessly. Until you try one you may not get it. Thanks Mr Taym for bringing this. Exeter riders done a few. They can never replace a motorcycle for me but I do get true pleasure out of mine. At 64 I haven’t got to grovel on my knees adjusting the chain every few months. Belt changes are v easy diy. One thing is I do prefer the bigger wheels on my honda

    Dear TAYM,
Honestly, how did you find the Vespa 300 GTS, during that short period you travelled on the motorway? I heard you say that you reached 70 m.p.h., but how did it feel at that speed, on that surface? Did the engine feel stressed, as though it only had a bit more poke left in it, or did you have the impression that it could have cruised easily at 70 - and perhaps even another 5 m.p.h more - all day, comfortably?
Did you find that the throttle was still quite responsive at highway speeds (I'm thinking about the bike's ability to overtake slow moving traffic in the nearside lane)?
And speaking of comfort, how did you find the shocks/suspension? A little bit stiff, or possibly too soft? Did it cope with potholes, and/or bumpy road surfaces well, without giving your lower back too much stick?
    Many thanks for your time.
I really enjoy watching your videos!
    All the best,
    Neil.

Thanks Neil 😁 I have done this again since this video and that includes a bit on the dual carriageway 😁 it did seem to manage just fine at motorway speeds and I do find it comfy but I am not sure I would want to do the mileage some seem to do on them 😁 I thought the suspension was a little soft rather than hard but coped well with the back roads 😁 I found it has a lot more torque than I thought it would but I never thought it would have very much😁 all things considered I really enjoy riding it. Hope that helps 🤔

    Dear Friend,
I saw your review, very interesting.
I would like to ask you a question.
I have a Primavera 150 year 2017, and I am with the intention of changing it for a GTS 300.
I was already decided to buy a green GTS300 Racing sixties, since I really like the design.(Not the rims color)
But...I found out from the local dealer...
That in my country, the new Vespa GTS300 (that were in the USA in 2022) arrive in next month (July).
The new Vespa models will be approximately US$1000 more than the previous ones. (Both 0 km)
So when I found out that the new model was coming, keyless, with a new front shock absorber, and some other aesthetic thing, I would like to ask you:
Is there a really considerable difference to wait for it, or if I like the Racing sixties, isn't there a change so important as to pay those U$1000 of difference?
    What would be your suggestion?
Does anyone else who has used both justify waiting and paying the difference?
Excuse my English and thank you very much in advance

    • @TAYM
      @TAYM  ปีที่แล้ว

As I am completely new to scooters I do not think I can answer your question but hopefully someone else might. What I can say is that I really liked this one. I think if it was me and I like the racing sixties paint job, that’s what I would go for. I think keyless ignition is just a fad and I always end up forgetting the key. 😁😁😁 I have set off on demos without the key, forgot to give it back after, and even forgot where I have put it 😂😁😁

You're not correct about the Aerodynamics I'm afraid. Piaggio built Aircraft long before they did Scooters & it shows. Compare the frontal area to any Motor Cycle up until the first fully Faired Sports Bikes of the 80's. Piaggio had them beat even in the midd 40's.
Look up the "Vespa Mothlery" from 1950. It took 17 World Endurance Record's in just 10 hours on a Race Circuit of the same name in France. Then compare the line's of that 1940's design with a Suzuki Hyabusa. No REALLY !

I saw a 650 Scooter yesterday on main Highway.A mate wanted HIS Mrs to get a bike but she had a old scooter & said "No,new Scooter or nothing".So naturally he went & got a scooter for her but he wanted her to keep up with him in Ducati on Highway so got her the biggest scooter he could find a Bergman 650😆😂🤣.HE thought she'd nut but she took it for ride & loved it heaps of room under seat & for groceries & plenty of power & tons up easy but not safe over 130kmh on crap roads cause of small wheels. He loves it too & is always making excuses to ride to shop, work etc😁😆😂🤣.

Some 350-650 Scooters 2 helmets fit under the seat. They're excellent 👌👍 commutor bikes & really fun to ride especially the 250-650cc Scooters but 300-450 is all you need really a 650 is overkill & a 350-450 do the same as a 650.Bergman do a 450 too but if you're over 6ft the 650 is needed a scooter for everyone's height from Dave to tall😂🤣.

@@TAYM Perfect for motorway with their good roads go in fast lane easily & do 70-75mph all day the 350-650cc Scooters on way to work & put work stuff under seat.Quite a few motorcyclists have both a Scooter to go to work on & thrash & not worry about cleaning it as much & bigger bike for longer trips & weekends.
Nearly everyone wants to ride scooter down to the shop for quick blast laughing etc.I would need at least a 300cc living in countryside & 100kmh zones.A Monkey 🐒 🐵 be fun but not fast enough 83kmh still be good though but being able to do 100kmh be great.Grom squad in Scotland on TH-cam is funny there's at least 4 of them a Squad if mini bikes be fun wouldn't it😂🤣.
