I think my issue with colourpop is that they discontinue so many of their bestselling products so much so that unless you were able to snag it when it first launched you’re probably never going to get to try it. I don’t think this continuous cycle of launching new collections is sustainable for them as a business because at some point customers are probably going to want to repurchase the staple products that they’d come to rely on and will inevitably be disappointed and frustrated that they’re no longer available. I also think that because their quality is SO hit or miss that they’re only doing themselves a disservice by not keeping their well-known and well-loved products in their line since most people don’t want to take a chance on a new Colourpop launch since they’re so inconsistent with the quality and no one wants to waste their money on a product that has about 50/50 shot of being good. I find that their constant releases are not only making the brand forgettable, but I also think it damages their future sales since they don’t have those key staple products that they’re widely known for-especially now that they’ve gotten rid of a majority of the products that first catapulted them into such success. If you constantly can’t find the products you do want and are continually bombarded with an excessive amount of new launches with unreliable quality, you’re going to eventually get fed up with a brand and stop buying from it altogether. I’m very curious to see where their brand will be in five years if they keep up their current business practices.
At least it is better than Too Faced they have similar problems, but at a higher price point, and people definitely don’t want to risk it for a higher price point. I think that’s why, when you compare the two, colourpop is more well prepared for a rebranding, a relaunch to bring back the old favourites, perhaps with new names and new packaging. I think they can still save the business for sure
I wanted to buy their red gel pot liner after buying their red liquid liner and then it was discontinued when I got the money to buy it. Super frustrating.
I love colourpop, but holy smokes do they have wayyyyy too many launches. One or two a week is crazy. I don’t see the need. Maybe once a month or even twice a month would be better. It makes the value to me go down honestly. Nobody can keep up. Not even the influencers that are sent all the collections. There’s just not enough time in a day to put that much makeup on our faces. That and they constantly have 30% off sales or 25% off sales, so it’s pointless to buy anything at regular price when within a few weeks to a month and a half you can get it for at least a 25% discount or more.
Colourpop was best before it had mass marketing- everything was $5, & you'd get handwritten notes thanking you for your purchase... now it's not even as good of quality but there's a ton of it. I wish they'd go back to what they were.
I had a lippie in color Trust Me. Loved it. Super drying though. Their eyeshadows always crumbled and their concealer separated in the first month. I had a love affair with them for about6 months… then moved back to Ruby Woo!
@kimberquirky their "flexitarian" highlighter was where it was at. I bought lippies but I had the opposite issue where they were so hydrating they'd melt or bleed... I remember buying one that was near black burgundy to try out the shade before I invested in Tom Ford. It was worth it, I got so many compliments but it faded on my lips. It served its purpose because the lip liner that matched was actually creamy & good (better than the lipstick) & went perfectly with other dark toned looks.
I miss the notes honestly, they were so cute I kept all of them and would make an artsy collage. Now that is over with, I do get a little disappointed that I havent found a note in my box like old times. Small thing I know, but it did mean something to me at least.
That’s why real indie brands are still doing well compared to the brands that went mainstream the ones that went mainstream their quality went down in more ways than one.
I’ve followed Colourpop since 2014 when they first launched. I was in high school and let me tell you that whenever I did get to get my hands on their products they were amazing!! Now they’re still good but I feel like they need to focus more on QUALITY over QUANTITY and not keep putting out so many new launches like every week because that isn’t sustainable for most people at all…
I mean their quality are nice too but wouldn't it make it more appealing if they launch things once or twice a month with different formulas? And day by day, the quality isn't staying true to it's marketing 🙂
I LOVED Colourpop in their early days, but they literally discontinued all of my favorite products (and many were bestselling too so I didn’t understand that tactic…). I wanted to be able to purchase my staples, do my makeup, and not be mentally exhausted with all the new products they kept pushing at me.
honestly, i think colourpop is so successful that they're willing to risk long-term customer loyalty for incredibly successful profit. their marketing, price point, and ability to create fast yet creative products are what will keep them on top for a really long time in a multi-billion dollar industry. despite colourpop doing things that potentially alienate their older audiences, they immediately make up for it towards their new consumers with all the collabs. whether or not colourpop will continue to do this is just a mystery, only time will tell for what happens next. hopefully it's one where it would produce less waste. anyways, i love this new channel. i can't wait for more of this content and the fashion content hihi
I think you really hit the nail on the head; if they are able to win over new consumers, then in the short term that will suffice to a very profitable bottom line, but it does come at the risk that they’re going to have to make up for that in the future when they run out of people willing to listen
I think that’ll work for now but they need to take care that they remain relevant. The minute they lose relevancy they’ll be in trouble since they alienated their core base and won’t be able to replace them like they can now.
I'm a marketing student and I thoroughly enjoy your breakdowns on the business operations or basically a company analysis, as we call it, especially in the supply chain since I don't quite hear a lot of those or even being properly explained in other business related (exposé) videos here on TH-cam. It really helps put into perspective what the company is going through and what could have affected their poor choices, and I love hearing about it since that's what I mostly do for my major haha. I watched all your videos in one sitting, and I have to say you're putting out good content for us. Keep up the good work!!
I also did marketing at uni and its still so fascinating to me to read about the inner workings of a company. Unfortunately so many businesses are very hush hush about their supply chains and marketing plans, so for companies like colourpop I find then super super interesting, hopefully I can make more like this 💄💄💄
I literally just subscribed today, and I'm already sold!!!! I'm a marketing professional recently turned tech and a business owner. Seeing that you're in marketing explains alot. Personally I'm just so impressed and so excited by your videos. I'm literally learning as much as I'm fascinated ❤. Keep going. I'd love to see kkw and nars
Damn, I remember the days when their eyeshadows were only $5 and their thank you notes were all hand written. I still have the one where they complemented my name. They were also heavy on the promotions on Snapchat.
For the price, the formulas are matched, that’s definitely true, but they need to rebrand to distance themselves from being the bargain bin company with too many products
Ya I stopped buying color pop cause it was just constantly releases and they started getting rid of things I loved and there were things I kept trying to buy but they were constantly out of stock and when they’d restock it it’d be gone immediately and then they would just discontinue it and them do that multiple times just pissed me off I just wait til they have a sale now to restock things I like and don’t keep up with their products anymore
I've thought CT is way too overhyped since their beginning. I'm allergic to a lot of their products, namely the eye pencils and eye shadows. Quality is not consistent. The Flawless Filter product was way too overhyped and sucks.
I really liked that you throughly explain the topics you take on, you’re just really through with facts and the timelines of things and I really appreciate your dedication to showing viewers facts about these topics.
I was a huge colourpop fan from 2014-2017 and got a lot of my staple products from them and loved seeing them grow and add complexion and skincare to their collection. They started having themed launches every few weeks and it feels so overwhelming and as if they’re just trying to create every possible shade out there. And I’m going to be honest why would I buy a muppet themed makeup palette? Their palettes aren’t even standing out anymore and I would rather buy something more versatile than a palette for 1 shade range
I agree with you that these collabs aren’t standing out at all, when all of the makeup companies are doing all of these different collabs every few days, it seems like, then there’s little difference between them
i absoutely love colorupop. their pigments, how nicely their shadows blend, the actual themes they go on their palettes/the colors, them being 100% crulety free!! i own exclusively colourpop eyeshadows!
@@underskinYT I don't think they need to rebrand, they need to revamp best selling products and not stop making best selling products. And stop too much production of new products every other 4 days while keeping their prices a bit less than they're rn because some of their products are not exactly spelling drugstore anymore 🥴😬 like 18$ for a neutral cool tone palette they launched in 2020
I love their products but they had too many releases for me. I feel I own or could make any color of eyeshadow with the products I have and don't really see the need to get anymore for awhile. I must have a least 20 of their palettes and I had to say, wow I really need to stop. Lol
My issues with CP are shitty online customer service, and I don't buy their collabs with Disney, influencers, or the like bc they're up priced and quality downed lol. If I stick to their basic pallets and super shocks purchased at Ulta, I'm happy. Most of my makeup is colourpop and it performs well if I stick to my rules.
Im glad youve found products that really work for you, I know their products can be hit or miss, but Im a huge disney nerd so I love their disney collabs 🤣
I'm 44 years old, and I've never been a makeup fan...until my 20 year old daughter gave me a colorpop pallette for Christmas a couple years ago....and omg..I love them, and the price...can't be beat for the quality
ColourPop have some of the best formulas on these market but are one of the worst when it comes to encouraging overconsumption. Like pm all makeup brands use too much plastic but very few release new collabs and products at such an obscene rate. At some point I turned off their emails because it started to feel like spam when I was getting practically a palette per day. It's just too much.
I really like ColourPop, but wish the quality were consistent. "That's Taupe" is possibly my favorite eye shadow palette of all time. Since it has a similar color story, I purchased "Of Quartz," and was disappointed to discover the quality was not nearly as good. That being said, their larger "Stone Cold Fox" and "Gone Matte" eye shadow palettes are fantastic. I wish they would release fewer new collections, and concentrate on more consistent quality.
There seems to be a common complaint about the company, especially for once online. You would think that quality consistency is so important when so many customers cannot test it in stores
I love the price point/quality ratio plus that they are made in the US. It doesn’t hurt that the packaging/collabs are so stinkin’ cute too. It’s one of the very few brands I still buy outside of TJMaxx tbh.
Consumer fatigue is right. ColourPop is pushing out another collection before they can ship out the orders from the collection before. I haven't even purchased anything from their 30% sale. I don't get as excited about the new releases anymore because they're old news by the time I get them in my hand.
wow this is great! I’ve never seen anyone on TH-cam do such in-depth business analysis on the beauty industry, super insightful and great video production quality. keep it up :)
I love these videos so much. You do such a great job at providing details about the company and the operations behind it. Keep up the good work, they’re so informative!
I really enjoyed your Rise and Fall videos! Especially since it seem like makeup is not as a huge deal as it was pre-pandemic. I’ve also kept track of my makeup consumption - comparing from previous years to this year. The amount of times I bought makeup this year could be counted in just one hand 😂 I can’t wait for your next video and the next one after that 😊
Thank you so much, Im so glad you enjoy the videos, Im literally half way through editing the next one now, but I definitely would like to do skincare companies too on this channel because I really enjoy how theyve used the decline of make up to propel their companies, so interesting to me
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Honestly, yeah, if they hadn't ran so hard with the 'we are fast makeup' thing, they really could've spun it quite well, and definitely still could if they ontinue to last a few more years/decades
Great channel with interesting insight into the makeup industry. I work in marketing / manufacturing so hearing about the supply chain process is refreshing!
I genuinely really enjoy using several ColourPop products. Unfortunately I’ve had several very poor experiences purchasing from them directly. I now refuse to order from a company that doesn’t have an actual customer service department. It took me losing nearly $400 in orders from them to learn that lesson. 😒
@@underskinYT Nope. They stopped answering my emails, and have no customer service number. I even attempted to call their HQ in California and got a freaking voicemail with no call back. I even tried to resolve the issue with the mail carrier, but they needed information from ColourPop before they could do anything. And they can’t blame Covid, because it was well after the lockdowns were lifted and they were fully operational. The only way I purchase ColourPop now is through Ulta. I can actually talk to a person if there’s an issue there.
If you charged it to a credit card then lodge an issue with the card company. If enough people do this then the credit card companies will stop doing business with the companies and then the companies start making changes for the better as they can’t afford to not have customers use credit cards.
Right, this is my issue with CP. I had 2 orders back to back with multiple items missing. I let the first time slide bc it was a $7 mistake, but the very next order it was a few items missing. I emailed them and they emailed back over a week later asking for a photo ... of the MISSING ITEMS. Like wtf? How do I give you a photo of something not there? I gave up bc I'd heard their customer service was deplorable and I didn't think I'd get anything resolved. I don't buy any new releases from them anymore, only super shocks, liners or brow products at Ulta. I noticed the quality of the shadow pallets was going down anyways so it was an easy choice.
I used to love CP back in their early days when I was in college. Then in 2017/2018 I stopped seeing my favorite brown matte Lippies which were Rooch and Limbo. I didn’t buy from them again until 2020 when I got the Nude Mood palette. I loved the colors, especially the dusty red. I tried to re-buy it in 2021 and they changed out the ONE color I liked by making it shimmer instead of matte. It was literally the only color in the palette that changed. I knew because I had my old one + new one to compare. I was so confused…. I look at their stuff at Ulta but they literally don’t keep the stuff I like…
As a third year business major wanting to go into the cosmetics industry this was really interesting! Colourpop was one of the first makeup brands I started getting into about 4 years back, and I’ve definitely tapped out after finding that my collection was massive and I’m still struggling to use stuff up. 😅
I have never brought from colourpop since shipping to Australia is so fricken expensive but I never stopped hearing about them from 2016-2018. Their super shock shadows were always talked about! But by 2019, their releases were sooo frequent it was hard to keep up. I'm interested to see what they do next, I know they have massive success on tiktok but beauty fans from the years 2016-2019 when we were solely relying on youtube for reviews are already sick of their constant releases. So it will definitely be interesting to see if they will rebrand or sacrifice their loyal consumers for more profits. i think it will be the latter. also hi, i love your channel & just subscribed! both of your channels are amazing & provide great think-piece videos that are so informative. keep it up!
Its so annoying that international travel is so ridiculously expensive, it puts me off of buying from so many smaller companies across seas, very frustrating! Thank you so much for subscribing to both, Im truly so glad you enjoy the content 🥰
My issue is several times my order was wrong. And instead of giving refund they offer credit. Which means I have to keep buying in order to use credit. It’s frustrating. I just want a correct order and lately it’s been hard to get that. Customer Service is lacking and quality control of orders been not great lately.
It’s Colourpop that made me LOVE applying eyeshadow. I went through my younger years without it, but now it’s my thing. Now I see they’re in Target? I hope they don’t get too commercial.
Imho they are flooding the market and I feel like they don’t care. But the average consumer doesn’t care either. I’ve stopped buying them. I don’t need new eyeshadow that often. I’d rather pay more for a higher quality eyeshadow with less kitsch.
Great video! I love colourpop, their quality is getting better and better. The price point can’t be beat. And every brand has or will have some kind of scandal- that’s life. I will always buy from colourpop. And one thing you can say about them- you’ll never get bored with them!! Thanks for the insight!
I think they’re able to continue because they have such devoted fans, like yourself I do hope that they can slow down their quantity of new products, but you are completely right you cannot say that they’re boring
I like Colourpop because they are affordable and yet they still do sales on every holidays which is nice. I do buy their new collection when I like it.
As long as they keep the quality of their makeup, they will stick around for years to come. More so now during this economy because people would rather spend money on affordable quality makeup as opposed to higher end. At least that is the case with me. I love ColourPop and hope they are in it for the long haul.
Yeeeesssss!!!!! It's amazing how far elf has come. I remember seeing elf brushes on a small rack at a discount store close to my house years ago...all of them .99...now their everywhere...so cool to see them blow up, and keep prices low
I love this series I would love to see a video on tarte Ive tried to watch a few videos about them here on TH-cam but I like the thorough documentary style that you do these videos in.
@@WillSing4TP I'm 44...fixing to turn 45...and I LOVE colorpop...the price point and quality is so good...I can get the same looks as high-end makeup for so much cheaper. Hopefully colorpop can keep going strong
@@lifeofatruckerswife I am with you 100%.😎 In fact, I splurged & bought their new hair tint & conditioner (in Chestnut). AND the matching Chestnut eyeshadow quad, colored gel eyeliner, & colored mascara. I can't wait to play!😛
I used to love Colorpop but at the rate launch products and sometimes it’s feels like they aren’t really launching anything new or exciting anymore. Same color stories just different packaging. I still use Colorpop products but not as much as I did three or four years ago.
I love Colourpop and I love their skincare line, FourthRay Beauty even more. Their price point is totally up my alley. I'm just tired of their overwhelming and totally unnecessary launches. They are so redundant at this point. I've even unfollowed them on IG but I'll continue to buy my staples from their skincare line as I don't wear makeup that much anymore.
I agree that they have too many products. I was actually on their website on Black Friday and I wanted to buy a few things but I noticed that there was page after page of literally the same products but different packaging… eventually i got overwhelmed and bought nothing.
If ColourPop doesn't keep up by continually innovating better performing formulas, skin improving ingredients and eco friendly packaging, it will fall behind amazing drugstore competitors like Essence, Elf, LA Girl and NYX. I also feel the fatigue with multiple launches and random collabs. What interests me, now that I have a decent makeup collection, are products that do new things demonstrated by reputable and creative makeup artists.
The market got so saturated because of the make up boom in the 2010s, eventually the companies are goinng to have to either adapt to the new consumer demand for truly great products ir they risk dying out 🤷🏼♂️
I personally love ColourPop because they have many products that are great and the price is really good too. The problem is them making limited products anymore, new launches every week, discontinuing some of their best products...
I don’t know why Colourpop is so popular. They’ve steadily raised their prices over the last 18 months, while quality and creativity have declined. If you own 3 of their palettes, you’ll never need to to buy another, because every palette has the same brown, peach, pink purple and gold shades. I’d rather buy 1 excellent quality palette at a higher price point than waste my money on 5 Colourpop palettes
I just hope colourpop launches in India because the customs on makeup/Skincare is so terribly high, there should be some pop up store, or it should be available on Nykaa (beauty app in India)
As a Canadian, the only way to purchase ColourPop is through online shopping. Ultra is not available in Canada & Sephora stopped selling the product. Buying from an American site becomes too expensive when shipping, taxes and duty are factored in. It’s unfortunate that we in Canada don’t have the opportunities to purchase ColourPop in store. 16:53
As a brit I can understand this so completely, back in the day before everything was free shipping, having the shipping cost plus the tax cost plus sometimes a customs cost, it was a nightmare to buy anything from America
I’ve never watched a video like this before and it’s super interesting! Just a little note: Those little 5 pan eyeshadow palettes are actually Wet ‘n Wild.
I think we’re seeing the beginning of changes within the company as I’m noticing their releases have been somewhat slowing down compared to the past two years and the same goes for the rise in quality of their products. Where they used to release 2 or more collections a week, it’s starting to become just one per week or they might even skip a week here and there these past few months and the products they have been dropping get consistently good reviews. I think they had a few bad launches that forced them to reevaluate their business model, that NBA collection no one wanted certainly comes to mind (the palettes are constantly up for sale, pretty much every time I check the website). Hopefully their production slows down even more and the focus on quality becomes their main priority and it’d be great to see them change into more eco-friendly packaging as well.
Yeah I think so too, its definitely on the right path. I think a revranding will help them regain some of the credibility that has been lost over that time
I've been noticing that, too. I remember when they launched the teaser for the NBA collab, everyone was guessing Disney princesses because the colors were the same. I've also noticed that many of the new launches have been different things than just make up. Or they've been smaller collections.
I love love Colourpop and have purchased so many singles and Monochramatics, and other eyeshadow palettes. Please do changed that annoying plastic palettes. I prefer the cardboard better.
I went from purchasing at least 6 times a year, to once a year. When the shipping doubled, it was no longer worth the wait of free shipping. Also, their product quality has gone down. Everything has to be a limited edition collab these days, and changing the pan shapes/sizes is annoying. I'm not really interested anymore.
@@underskinYT I would need their shipping to go back down to a reasonable amount, and also the pans go back to the way they were. One of the best parts about their magnetic pans was the ability to customize your own palette. But now, you can do that with 2021+ releases.
I have been using colourpop since the very beginning when all their matte lipsticks were 5$ and I loved that! I love their matte lipsticks but they’re discounted Their eyeshadow has terrible quality!! No pigmentation at all and so much fall out!!
My first experience with ColourPop was when I built my own eyeshadow palette (large) and my order arrived with a few pans missing. Their process was for me to take a pic of the shades received and cross-reference the invoice to prove what was missing. That process might have changed but ooookkkay. I hardly use that palette since the quality was okay but not the cow jumped over the moon exciting since I have a major addiction to color and makeup.
ColourPop discontinues really great products, and they make so many poor products. If I like something, I need to purchase more than one in fear of ColourPop disconting it. And, I waste money trying subpar profucts trying to find a diamond in the rough. I placed a large order with them pre-pandemic and the eyeshadow was low quality- not enough pigment and chalky. It was so bad, I swore myself off the brand. I fear the brand needs a major overhaul
ColourPop pricing is another issue. The Yes Please palette orig sold for $12. Now a 12 pan palette sells for $22-$24. What iced to be affordable is getting more expensive.
As a Brit, I always hated buying anything online back in the day, because, without that free shipping, the taxes and the shipping was always a nightmare
Ive always loved marketing/ branding all that stuff, I got a degree in it but ended up not liking working in the industry much, so I always kept it as a hobby 😇
I feel so silly, I hadn’t heard of these people, so I just search them now, half a mil and 3 point something million?! That’s such an incredibly nice comparison considering I just started the channel a week ago 😂
I used to buy a lot of ColourPop, but with currency inflation, limited product availability, and the PR/sponsoring of influencers they’ve associated with in the past year have kinda put me off.
I’m from Oxnard, where the factories from Colourpop and Spatz Laboratories are located. They hire mostly minority woman, some of whom don’t speak English, and treat them like absolute shit. My aunt worked there for a while and she stopped for the sake of her mental health. They treat you like a machine, not a human. They yell at you if you don’t work fast enough, and demand the impossible. After hearing all the crap she and other women went through working there I couldn’t bring myself to buy their products anymore even if I liked them.
Unfortunately this is horribly prevalent in all kinds of manufacturing. If you want to just be horrified, I really recommend Fashionopolis by Dana Thomas. Im half way through now and Im so furious how common this type of treatment is. Im sorry your family went through this, genuinely. Noone should have to 💕
The first photo show the swamp queen palette, is a collab Grav3yardgrl did with Tarte. The Manny MUA pallette is a collab with MUG. The quads the left are wet N' Wild. ???? The company is seed beauty.
I do love CP and I think they do collections really well for the most part. I just wish they would slow down with the launches.. it’s getting to be too much.
There are many items that came out that were so cute but only one time only. I really wish they had a fan fave collection or something. They have good makeup but such bad ways so selling it
I for one stopped purchasing Colourpop a long time ago because they have been launching products way too much to the point where I found it overrated and played out! I loved Colourpop when they first began but now, I'm all about skincare, self care and mental health ✨️ What irritated me was that Colourpop's product prices rose up and I got turned off
I think thats what happened to a lot of peopel. Life got stressful and we didnt need hyper products anymore, I think Ill probably do skincare brands on this channel too in not too far in the future, you have any favourites youd like to see?
I appreciate the price point and quality of ColourPop in the beginning when they first launched and I enjoyed their products. However, I hardly buy it anymore because most of my favorite colors in their stable line of products have been discontinued, I'm fatigued in seeing way too many launches that it is very dizzying and it discourages me to purchase because I may love the product, but it gives me the notion that I "have to buy it before it's gone" mentality and I hate feeling that way. Lately, the quality isn't as good as it once was. They have made their mistakes in the past but they also listen to their customers as well. So, to ColourPop, I doubt someone from the brand will see this, but if you want to continue to keep my interest, please stop with the multiple releases; it is way too much. Quality over Quantity. Minimize discontinuing so many products too!
I love colourpop! Since 2016!!!! Easy trick to get all releases is wait till at the end of the month or wait for big sales. I mean BIG sales! And BUY ONLY the colors you want to wear every time! If you want same color eyeshadows that been in the market like forever like over 3 decades. Go to other brands that like to keep same colors and have loyal costumers.
me too! i had it in 'stud' and it was so so creamy and pigmented and comfortable to wear. absolutely hated the ultra matte lipstick though, super drying and peeled off my lips after a couple of hours.
I actually almost started a becca brand video for the next next one (for July), but it had been done so many times so I have been trying to decide on a brand thats not been covered before by another YTuber, which is apparently not easy at all 😂
Fabulous content. And great voice . You are gonna go super far! 🎉 Edited to add: I would absolutely love your take on the Balenciaga issue. From a business perspective, I find it absolutely baffling. Maybe on your sister channel?
Thank you so much I’m so glad you enjoyed, I actually have a video already on Balenciaga on my fashion channel, it doesn’t go up to the recent scandal, but it will give you insight into how they let this kind of controversy happen.
Colourpop quality has gone down SO BADLY. I have been buying their products a few times every year since 2016 and it just kept getting worse and worse every year :/ after my very recent purchase in February this year, I stopped buying their products or even considering them.
It’s really such a shame that so many people seem to agree on this, especially considering they run their own production line, it seems much more like a choice that the quality has gone downhill, because they have total control over that
This is a brand made for the US, period! I bought it once, a rather large amount of products. It took 3 months to reach Portugal...it was ridiculous. So, although they were very good, especially love my custom made eye shadow palette, I never bought anything again. And with the new European tax laws, 3 months waiting plus custom taxes...hell no! It's too much of a bother!
I’m glad they have such a loyal fan base, because they’ve worked so hard to get the company to where it is, they really deserve to see it succeed even more
❤honestly i have never heard of this makeup before. it's a bit too colorful for me; however, i understand its "poppy" appeal. sorry to hear that the successful brand has fallen. ❤
I learnt so much from watching this! I think their business model is really interesting and much easier to do because they started with a lab . Their lack of sustainability and fast approach isn't great but I don't think we're in a period where that would be enough to stop people buying from them. People don't tend to mind if the quality is hit and miss when the product is cheap because it's easy for them to just try something else. I think the fact that they have constant new product launches really cheapens the brand and I don't think it's a good long-term approach however when compared with fast fashion brands constant new products is never really an issue. And maybe despite the criticisms because people are still buying from them and they have a growing customer base, since they're not seeing a negative impact on profit then they don't think it's worth changing yet.
I think it was Laura, that said if you want to try a new shade of lipstick, you’re not going to pay the big brand prices, but you’ll try it for $6. And I feel like that is exactly what you’re saying, and it’s so true.
Whatever I love colour pop. Their eye shadows and quality never fail me for the price point. Some other products outside of their eye shadows and blush are hit or miss.
I think they can still save the business for sure
the down to earth 4 colors palette aaa
literally so frustrating like they discontinue everything, my favorite highlighter of all time is discontinued

Youre so right, noone needs that much eyeshadow 🤣😂
Hahaha influencer athletic brands do the same thing. I'm so over it.
Colourpop was best before it had mass marketing- everything was $5, & you'd get handwritten notes thanking you for your purchase... now it's not even as good of quality but there's a ton of it. I wish they'd go back to what they were.
Theres a few photos of those letters online too, such an incredible and unexpected touch
Now they’re still good but I feel like they need to focus more on QUALITY over QUANTITY and not keep putting out so many new launches like every week because that isn’t sustainable for most people at all…
And doesnt give their lab the needed time to perfect formulas too
I mean their quality are nice too but wouldn't it make it more appealing if they launch things once or twice a month with different formulas? And day by day, the quality isn't staying true to it's marketing 🙂
Agreed it doesn’t feel as special anymore
I LOVED Colourpop in their early days, but they literally discontinued all of my favorite products (and many were bestselling too so I didn’t understand that tactic…). I wanted to be able to purchase my staples, do my makeup, and not be mentally exhausted with all the new products they kept pushing at me.
And thats exactly the reason why they lost a lot of loyal customers; by pushing them away 🤷🏼♂️
Yep and some of us get mentally exhausted trying to find a replacement for a favorite item. So disappointing
I know, their red lip glosses are just gone forever and I will never understand why.
i havent stopped crying since they discontinued their contour stix
honestly, i think colourpop is so successful that they're willing to risk long-term customer loyalty for incredibly successful profit. their marketing, price point, and ability to create fast yet creative products are what will keep them on top for a really long time in a multi-billion dollar industry. despite colourpop doing things that potentially alienate their older audiences, they immediately make up for it towards their new consumers with all the collabs. whether or not colourpop will continue to do this is just a mystery, only time will tell for what happens next. hopefully it's one where it would produce less waste.
anyways, i love this new channel. i can't wait for more of this content and the fashion content hihi
I think you really hit the nail on the head; if they are able to win over new consumers, then in the short term that will suffice to a very profitable bottom line, but it does come at the risk that they’re going to have to make up for that in the future when they run out of people willing to listen
Yes but I’m betting morphe had similar thoughts. Granted morphe products were always just okay. Colourpop quality is generally way better then morphe.
I saw so many of those pictures online when I was researching for this, I miss that in the company
Colourpop is probably the best makeup company you can find but they need to slow it down . We get overwhelmed by 50 million collections a month .
For the price, the formulas are matched, that’s definitely true, but they need to rebrand to distance themselves from being the bargain bin company with too many products
I can’t find their ‘make your own’ palettes anymore did they stop ? :((( that was my fav during the holidays
@@Ahhahhhsiisis they most definitely did, couldn't find anything from their website or their retailers from my country either
they literally come out with a 36 pan eyeshadow palette every week
Ya I stopped buying color pop cause it was just constantly releases and they started getting rid of things I loved and there were things I kept trying to buy but they were constantly out of stock and when they’d restock it it’d be gone immediately and then they would just discontinue it and them do that multiple times just pissed me off
I just wait til they have a sale now to restock things I like and don’t keep up with their products anymore
I mean, if they lost your trust, it’s no wonder you left buying from them
Finally, a channel with "rise and fall" videos that actually contain analysis and thoughtful commentary! Subscribing and excited to see more
Thank you so much! Im so glad you enjoy 🥰
Rise and fall of Charlotte Tilbury! I feel there is so much i don't know and lots of people are turning way from the brand now
Omg absolutely genius!!
Please! It’s soooo hyped and so expensive !!!!!
Thank you so much! I really try to dive as deep as possible with the brands to get where they come from, Im glad that it shows ^^
I was a huge colourpop fan from 2014-2017 and got a lot of my staple products from them and loved seeing them grow and add complexion and skincare to their collection.
ColorPop have good product, and a good way to react customers, if they rebrand, I think they could come back harder than ever
Love this! I‘ll do this, too!
I'm 44 years old, and I've never been a makeup fan...until my 20 year old daughter gave me a colorpop pallette for Christmas a couple years ago....and omg..I love them, and the price...can't be beat for the quality
Thats so lovely that they are so sentimental for you 🥰
@@underskinYT 💙 that pallet really is
Yeah gotta love the slave labor and waged that went into that palette! How else do you get quality and low cost? Smh 🤦🏻♀️
@@CrustyUggdidn’t you watch the video? It explains exactly that!
@@CrustyUgg that's literally true for everything you buy though lmao
ColourPop have some of the best formulas on these market but are one of the worst when it comes to encouraging overconsumption. Like pm all makeup brands use too much plastic but very few release new collabs and products at such an obscene rate. At some point I turned off their emails because it started to feel like spam when I was getting practically a palette per day. It's just too much.
Yeah, they’re really gone hard on customer fatigue, and there is no good reason for them to do it either just alienate the customer
You could also buy the Same exact eyeshadow or lip product whatever and no product is the exact same throughout different batches it’s insane
The thing about ColourPop that I truly don't understand is why they are producing so many "new" products so frequently.
It’s hard to keep up and it causes customer fatigue
I love the price point/quality ratio plus that they are made in the US. It doesn’t hurt that the packaging/collabs are so stinkin’ cute too. It’s one of the very few brands I still buy outside of TJMaxx tbh.
I read this comment, thought it was really lovely, then I saw your Instagram handle and I just love you so much for how much that made me laugh 🤣😂
❤❤❤❤❤ 🇺🇸
Consumer fatigue is right. ColourPop is pushing out another collection before they can ship out the orders from the collection before. I haven't even purchased anything from their 30% sale. I don't get as excited about the new releases anymore because they're old news by the time I get them in my hand.
Its so disappointing
wow this is great! I’ve never seen anyone on TH-cam do such in-depth business analysis on the beauty industry, super insightful and great video production quality. keep it up :)
Thank you so much, I’m working on the next video now, hope to see you there 🫰
I love these videos so much. You do such a great job at providing details about the company and the operations behind it. Keep up the good work, they’re so informative!
Thank you so much, Im so glad you enjoy my content 🙂 I look forward to seeing you in the next one 😇
I really enjoyed your Rise and Fall videos! Especially since it seem like makeup is not as a huge deal as it was pre-pandemic. I’ve also kept track of my makeup consumption - comparing from previous years to this year. The amount of times I bought makeup this year could be counted in just one hand 😂
I can’t wait for your next video and the next one after that 😊
Thank you so much, Im so glad you enjoy the videos, Im literally half way through editing the next one now, but I definitely would like to do skincare companies too on this channel because I really enjoy how theyve used the decline of make up to propel their companies, so interesting to me
this is a great business analysis! i agree that they can definitely use their origin story for brand storytelling
It’s such a hugely important part of a business 😇
I genuinely really enjoy using several ColourPop products. Unfortunately I’ve had several very poor experiences purchasing from them directly. I now refuse to order from a company that doesn’t have an actual customer service department. It took me losing nearly $400 in orders from them to learn that lesson. 😒
Omg $400?! Thats insane, did you get it solved?
I look at their stuff at Ulta but they literally don’t keep the stuff I like…
Oh, my God, to be disappointed, not once, but twice, that’s so annoying
As a third year business major wanting to go into the cosmetics industry this was really interesting! Colourpop was one of the first makeup brands I started getting into about 4 years back, and I’ve definitely tapped out after finding that my collection was massive and I’m still struggling to use stuff up. 😅
i’m assuming you’re American because you said major, so does that mean in America, you can do retailing as part of a business degree?
I’m doing international business which is more interdisciplinary. I think im gonna emphasize on marketing though.
This channel is very well produced, continue to stay that way! Continue to provide an objective eye!
Thank you 🫰
I have never brought from colourpop since shipping to Australia is so fricken expensive but I never stopped hearing about them from 2016-2018.
Oh thats so frustrating! And i hear they dont have a good CS line either
It’s Colourpop that made me LOVE applying eyeshadow. I went through my younger years without it, but now it’s my thing. Now I see they’re in Target? I hope they don’t get too commercial.
I see nothing wrong with having target as a stockist, as long as the quality is still good (which I know isnt always the case) 🤷🏼♂️
Imho they are flooding the market and I feel like they don’t care. But the average consumer doesn’t care either. I’ve stopped buying them. I don’t need new eyeshadow that often. I’d rather pay more for a higher quality eyeshadow with less kitsch.
I think it also makes it hard for creators to keep up too, like it must be exhausting trying to review aaaaalllllll of their new releases
@7:33 the middle picture is Manny MUA’s collaboration with Makeup Geek. He was one of the first modern artists to pitch a red eyeshadow.
Im so glad you found a brand you love, I hope they update their branding to make it more updated
this video is so professional! can't wait to see how big this channel gets. you deserve a lot!!!
Thank you so much, that’s so kind
As long as they keep the quality of their makeup, they will stick around for years to come. More so now during this economy because people would rather spend money on affordable quality makeup as opposed to higher end. At least that is the case with me. I love ColourPop and hope they are in it for the long haul.
Esp with the impending recession
You should do the rise of ELF
Definitely on my list! Im already working on the next one ^^
That’s a great suggestion, I’ve got the next few videos planned, but I’m very much looking for suggestions for after that, so thank you
It's just too much. We are all overwhelmed with too much. So many of us are pushing back on all of the unnecessary excess in life
I think this is why so many people moved over to skincare where it feels much more slow paced
@@underskinYT yes great point, I agree!

I used to love Colorpop but at the rate launch products and sometimes it’s feels like they aren’t really launching anything new or exciting anymore. Same color stories just different packaging. I still use Colorpop products but not as much as I did three or four years ago.
Plus when there are so many releases, it’s exciting to get excited about each individual one, because it’s tiring
Im really excited for you channel! Keep it going, so informative and entertaining ❤
Thank you so much 💕💕
I love Colourpop and I love their skincare line, FourthRay Beauty even more. Their price point is totally up my alley. I'm just tired of their overwhelming and totally unnecessary launches. They are so redundant at this point. I've even unfollowed them on IG but I'll continue to buy my staples from their skincare line as I don't wear makeup that much anymore.
Is fourthray colourpop or is it under seed?
@@underskinYTFourth Ray is Colourpop's skincare line
I agree that they have too many products. I was actually on their website on Black Friday and I wanted to buy a few things but I noticed that there was page after page of literally the same products but different packaging… eventually i got overwhelmed and bought nothing.
And that’s on bad retailing
My FAV was “POPPIN” - they need to bring that back
Barbie movie vibes f or sureeee
Yes, it’s a fast way to lose trust in their brand by oversaturating their customers
this is so good. please continue making more of these.
Thank you so much I’m currently working on the next one as we speak, just getting the script perfect
Binging this channel!! Love your work thank you!!! 🤍
I’m so glad that you enjoy, sorry there’s not a lot to binge as of yet 🥺
I don’t know why Colourpop is so popular. They’ve steadily raised their prices over the last 18 months, while quality and creativity have declined. If you own 3 of their palettes, you’ll never need to to buy another, because every palette has the same brown, peach, pink purple and gold shades. I’d rather buy 1 excellent quality palette at a higher price point than waste my money on 5 Colourpop palettes
Was it dolly or someone else that said we were too poor to buy anything cheap?
I would love to see more videos like these! such great reporting.
Thank you so much! I cant wait to make more too 😇
I just hope colourpop launches in India because the customs on makeup/Skincare is so terribly high, there should be some pop up store, or it should be available on Nykaa (beauty app in India)
Oh thats so frustratinggg
As a Canadian, the only way to purchase ColourPop is through online shopping. Ultra is not available in Canada & Sephora stopped selling the product. Buying from an American site becomes too expensive when shipping, taxes and duty are factored in. It’s unfortunate that we in Canada don’t have the opportunities to purchase ColourPop in store. 16:53
As a brit I can understand this so completely, back in the day before everything was free shipping, having the shipping cost plus the tax cost plus sometimes a customs cost, it was a nightmare to buy anything from America
As an American living in England, I wish Colourpop was readily available here. I’m hitting pan on all the pallets I brought with me.
Their lip stuff & bigger eyeshadow palettes are in such demand in India & sold mostly via resellers.. truly a shame they dont see that market!
It could be to do with import laws?
I’ve never watched a video like this before and it’s super interesting! Just a little note: Those little 5 pan eyeshadow palettes are actually Wet ‘n Wild.
Oh which ones? Can I ask for a timestamp please 🙏
4:46, bottom right.❤️
I think we’re seeing the beginning of changes within the company as I’m noticing their releases have been somewhat slowing down compared to the past two years and the same goes for the rise in quality of their products.
@@abbybush4875 Yeah, definitely seems like they're branching out more to other products like the hair dyes they dropped the other day
Your channel is going to blow up 👏🏼👏🏼❤️❤️

I love love Colourpop and have purchased so many singles and Monochramatics, and other eyeshadow palettes. Please do changed that annoying plastic palettes. I prefer the cardboard better.
Or at least make it reusable
I went from purchasing at least 6 times a year, to once a year. When the shipping doubled, it was no longer worth the wait of free shipping.
Also, their product quality has gone down. Everything has to be a limited edition collab these days, and changing the pan shapes/sizes is annoying. I'm not really interested anymore.
Would you come back if they rebranded and changed up the packaging?
@@underskinYT I would need their shipping to go back down to a reasonable amount, and also the pans go back to the way they were. One of the best parts about their magnetic pans was the ability to customize your own palette. But now, you can do that with 2021+ releases.
I had an issue with some of their lipsticks. Looked just like the issues with Jaclyn Hill lipsticks.
Hairs? 🤣😂
Yass! I was like WTF is that. I'm also concerned there's no date after opening on any of their products.

I have been using colourpop since the very beginning when all their matte lipsticks were 5$ and I loved that! I love their matte lipsticks but they’re discounted
Their eyeshadow has terrible quality!! No pigmentation at all and so much fall out!!
its such a shame that the products simply arent consistent
My first experience with ColourPop was when I built my own eyeshadow palette (large) and my order arrived with a few pans missing. Their process was for me to take a pic of the shades received and cross-reference the invoice to prove what was missing. That process might have changed but ooookkkay. I hardly use that palette since the quality was okay but not the cow jumped over the moon exciting since I have a major addiction to color and makeup.
Thats a real shame, its so frustrating when you dont get what you ordered
ColourPop discontinues really great products, and they make so many poor products. If I like something, I need to purchase more than one in fear of ColourPop disconting it. And, I waste money trying subpar profucts trying to find a diamond in the rough.
I placed a large order with them pre-pandemic and the eyeshadow was low quality- not enough pigment and chalky. It was so bad, I swore myself off the brand.
I fear the brand needs a major overhaul
Oh damn thats sucb a shame that you had suxh a bad exp with their product, im so sorry
ColourPop pricing is another issue. The Yes Please palette orig sold for $12. Now a 12 pan palette sells for $22-$24. What iced to be affordable is getting more expensive.
The price increases have really got on peoples nerves definitely, esp with the quality not improving with it
As a Canadian, the only way to purchase ColourPop is through online shopping. Ultra is not available in Canada & Sephora stopped selling the product. Buying from an American site becomes too expensive when shipping, taxes and duty are factored in. It’s unfortunate that we in Canada don’t have the opportunities to purchase ColourPop in store.
As a Brit, I always hated buying anything online back in the day, because, without that free shipping, the taxes and the shipping was always a nightmare
Currently in grad school and oof you know your marketing! More, please
Ive always loved marketing/ branding all that stuff, I got a degree in it but ended up not liking working in the industry much, so I always kept it as a hobby 😇
just wish they’d bring back big palette launches from the past, like Kathleen Lights, etc
I mean, considering people routinely ask for this, doing reruns is probably the best use of their factories at the moment, no?
I feel that I've discovered the MagnatesMedia and ColdFusion of beauty, good content
I feel so silly, I hadn’t heard of these people, so I just search them now, half a mil and 3 point something million?! That’s such an incredibly nice comparison considering I just started the channel a week ago 😂
Really appreciate and enjoy your content!
Thank you so much 🥰
I used to buy a lot of ColourPop, but with currency inflation, limited product availability, and the PR/sponsoring of influencers they’ve associated with in the past year have kinda put me off.
As long as the old stuff is still going 😶🌫️
I can't stand influencers. Meanwhile I'm over here working my ass off with less than 1k subscribers invisible on this platform.
I love these videos plz do moreee ❤
Oh 100% 🥰
Amazing video I think I just found a new channel to obsess over ❤
Thank you so much 🙏🙏
I’m from Oxnard, where the factories from Colourpop and Spatz Laboratories are located.
Noone should have to 💕
Now this is something that needs to be shared!!!!
The first photo show the swamp queen palette, is a collab Grav3yardgrl did with Tarte. The Manny MUA pallette is a collab with MUG. The quads the left are wet N' Wild. ???? The company is seed beauty.
They were examples of TH-camr Collabs, not specifically examples of ColourPop, TH-camr collabs 🫰
I do love CP and I think they do collections really well for the most part. I just wish they would slow down with the launches.. it’s getting to be too much.
Customer fatigue is a real thing 🤷
There are many items that came out that were so cute but only one time only. I really wish they had a fan fave collection or something. They have good makeup but such bad ways so selling it
Oh, that would be so good, a fan favourite collection before a vibrant, I think that would be viral
Informative & thought provoking !
Im so glad you enjoyed, thank you so much
I for one stopped purchasing Colourpop a long time ago because they have been launching products way too much to the point where I found it overrated and played out!
And quite frankly, when there’s too much to buy half the audience can’t afford to. Especially as we’re going into recession next year 🤷🏼♂️
I love colourpop!
I think the problem is that people came to rely on the products, and then when they came back to them they were gone, they just lose trust that way
A lot of us do only choose what we want to use all the time and then we run out.. come back and its gone! Can’t repurchase our faves
I'm glad someone is talking about this
Im glad people enjoy the content 🥰
i really miss their ultra satin lips and i wish they could bring them back
Ngl had to google that one, but woah did it take me down the whole matte make up trend rabbit hole 🤣
me too! i had it in 'stud' and it was so so creamy and pigmented and comfortable to wear. absolutely hated the ultra matte lipstick though, super drying and peeled off my lips after a couple of hours.
can u do a video on bite beauty and becca, both brands shut down post covid
I actually almost started a becca brand video for the next next one (for July), but it had been done so many times so I have been trying to decide on a brand thats not been covered before by another YTuber, which is apparently not easy at all 😂
Fabulous content. And great voice . You are gonna go super far! 🎉
Edited to add: I would absolutely love your take on the Balenciaga issue.
@@underskinYT I will definitely check it out!
They have the most amazing eyeshadows. Wedding day style palettes !!
Colourpop quality has gone down SO BADLY. I have been buying their products a few times every year since 2016 and it just kept getting worse and worse every year :/ after my very recent purchase in February this year, I stopped buying their products or even considering them.
It’s really such a shame that so many people seem to agree on this, especially considering they run their own production line, it seems much more like a choice that the quality has gone downhill, because they have total control over that
Yeah I stopped buying from them around 3-4 years ago cause I noticed quality was going down down down
This is a brand made for the US, period!
Is there any better buying from the UK store?
I loveeee ColourPop. Great formulas, nice color and texture variety and great price point.
Colourful make up was very of its time I think. I don’t think there is as much of a market for it now as there is for beige make up
I learnt so much from watching this!
I think thats why if/when they do revrand they will be extremely successful once again
