While I find her personal relationship with makeup strange, I think she is a marketing genius, and has developed some great products. I actually find her response to e.l.f. quite cheeky and in her character. E.L.F. profits because she does the creative, the development of the product, and tests the waters, then they enjoy her hard work. She can have a little fun and its very on brand. Hollywood. Branding. Image. Its not quiet luxury. Its not trying to pretend to be something it is not. The only thing that seems ridiculous is the fragrance.
ive been really unimpressed with CT since i decided to splurge on the magic cream and a pillowtalk lip set. the packaging on both feels so cheap and thrown together and the lipstick fell out of the component only a week after i got it :( the magic cream also burned my face super bad and gave me a horrible rash for weeks but given that i have psoriasis im not gonna blame that on the cream just yet. so i was already disillusioned with the brand altogether after realizing they're charging a luxury price for dollar store quality. but now hearing the way she talks about makeup and especially the way she talks about other women? oh hell no😵💫 it's genuinely heartbreaking to hear the way she thinks about herself but its a different story entirely to hear that she projects her own insecurities onto other women. misery loves company i guess. either way this really solidifies my current opinion on the brand, mediocre quality for a luxury price tag all while it preys on insecurity, no thank you
It's interesting that you say we can infer that dupes are affecting CT as a brand when we are hearing other reports that luxury is a fast-growing sector and that dupes are actually driving consumers to the higher-end product. But in this wider picture, it seems like dupes are hurting everyone. I wish brands would just focus on making great products - fewer but nicer, you know?
I agree! We’re now on to “dupes of dupes” (I think Kelly did a video on this a year or two ago). I think dupes originated with all good intentions (so that people who didn’t have the money could still get an approximation of a product) but now we’re so inundated with dupes, “novelty” products, all kinds of “this is just a little bit different and so you need this” products - even hardcore makeup mavens are getting burnt out. There’s a reason brands like Clinique and Lancôme hang on under the influencer radar - they cater to the middle-aged and older people who don’t want to follow every trend but are brand loyal when they find a great product. Meanwhile new brands go through the cycle of Sephora to TJ Max to “whatever became of Brand X” every few years. There’s a limit to the shades of purple eyeshadow, TV or movie or toy tie-ins, etc. that people are going to spend on. And people are getting just as sick of the makeup equivalent of “designer brand clothing that falls apart in the wash” as they are of fast fashion.
I find CT makeup to be so underwhelming, and CT herself rubs me the wrong way. You're right; "fun, quirky, weird" is what she's going for, but it comes off as trying way too hard. Aside from her though, the eyeshadows were so overhyped and the lipstick isn't any better than others that cost half the price. I've decluttered nearly every CT item in my collection, except for the flawless filter, iconic nude lipliner, and the airbrush bronzer.
I don’t own anything from Charlotte’s brand but I relate to mascara being the first makeup product I tried too and it hooked me to makeup as well I remember trying it and being fascinated by how it changed my eyes
There is just something about her that really turns me off. The way she talks, like exaggerating her words, and her facial expressions (again super exaggerated), is just so annoying. Something about her just screams super narcissist to me. She's very into herself and it's just weird. Lol, just as I was typing this comment you starting talking about how she's acting weird these days and like playing a caricature of herself. That's exactly what I was trying to say!!! I just can't stand to watch her talk these days.
@@madsquishy3410 I feel the same. I’m wondering if she has something going on like narcissism or histrionic. Purely speculation. I’ve never met her. These are just thoughts based on her going to nightclubs when she was 8, her very unhealthy obsession with makeup and power “weaponized beauty”, the over-dramatic persona, and the celebrity worship. Idk I’m just wondering
The perfume line of CT seems very strange. Has a sort of Charlotte and the 7 Dwarves feel. Not lovely at all. Not Hollywood at all. Not much magic. I don't use any CT products because too expensive for what it is.
Great video! Loved your analysis. Completed agree about the fragrance branding… Felt like a departure from the ‘Old Hollywood Fantasy’ vibes of the makeup line.
I sincerely always enjoy all your videos, Kelly! I’ve been in the online beauty space since 2010. I never watched CT’s YT channel but no one would stop talking about her and for YEARS I wondered WHO is Charlotte Tilbury?! I appreciate this deep dive bc I never got this far. I remember her brand exploded in 2014. It was inaccessible so I never tried it until it went to Sephora, and I still cannot afford her prices but I wish I could. Her marketing is incredible and clearly successful. Since CT has come to Ulta, I’ve noticed a lot of young people at their section, talking about it, reacting to it, asking their moms for it. There is a hype around her brand. I mean, good for her, and good for the people who can afford it. I like what I’ve tried but I usually have to shop for a dupe bc those prices are outrageous! And in this economy! I am usually excited to see what CT comes out with bc they are usually trend setters and create cult products that have lasting hype for years and years. Rarely do I hear about how bad their products are.
I'm guessing she went to a really cheap supplier for those perfumes. 😅 I'm waiting for those to be dumped in my place just like what happened to her first perfume Scent of a Dream
I received a sample of Love Spell and i did a dumb thing by spraying it on my body before smelling it and I was literally nauseous at work all night! I was not a fan at all.
I never bought any products from CT, I always found the products overpriced for what they are but mostly there’s something unattractive and phoney IMO about that marketing
I’ve only bought 2 things from her brand the hypnotizing pop shots…and got a free reward of the magic cream maybe but used it once. I’ve never gotten the hype, I think her packaging looks like old Hollywood but in a cheap and tacky way. I think it’s all very ugly.
Her voice, over the top persona and overdone filler (pillow face!) have always been a turn-off for me. I have only ever tried the setting spray, which is great. So now the question I ask myself is, “do I dislike her enough to impact how I choose to do my makeup?” We all have power to support the brands we like and that same power to not support the ones we don’t. It’s an interesting thing to consider what to do when our beliefs are counter to our convenience.
The fragrances are all horrible. I'm not surprised they aren't selling. The fact that they predominantly sell on line too puts me off buying a fragrance from them
I do not own any Charlotte Tilbury products nor do I plan to buy any new makeup in general very soon, and I do not like the packaging (I do not watch ads/promotional advertisements ever so I can't tell you how I feel about that) for some of the products I've seen (not ALL), however it is very refreshing to see someone who's honest about their brand, opinions, and so on. Instead of doing what she does (actions wise, not words), making, naming, and promoting all these products in this way but talking about how she "enjoys makeup as an art form" or whatever other bullshit makeup brand owners/whatever say when in reality they couldn't care less about it as a tool for self expression or a tool to level up in life etc, she is actually honest about her views (of course it's extremely rare that someone will publicly state their thoughts, feelings, and opinions 100% honestly or accurately or whatever, this is not what I mean, but rather just not full on lying or twisting things)
I can't stand Charlotte as a person and don't understand the hype of her brand, I think it sux and is overpriced crap! I have not liked anything I have tried from her brand other than the lipstick
I bought one CT quad in my life, and it was only because I couldn't find this precise color stpry anywhere. I hate their packaging, it's tacky and cheap. The eyeshadows themselves turned out to be a disaster, they are chalky yet I still managed to get a hard pan somehow.
I enjoyed this video and learned a lot of the brand's history. I used to buy a lot from the brand but I don't really find the appeal any longer. She stopped releasing her star products such as the large eyeshadow palettes and the quads and went for strange options such as the perfumes. I am aware that eyeshadow is no longer popular but I think they were truly what made her brand shine from other brands.
re: the "darling" thing, I totally agree lol. Mariah Carey does the same thing as part of this caricature born from all of her "diva" accusations, and I think she did it long before Charlotte, so I'd imagine Charlotte borrowed it from that.
I have to say that I got the mini pressed powder and lipstick and gloss and they are very cute and good products but not worth the full size price. Thank you‘darling’😊
Thanks for the researches compiling the video. It resonates with my feeling of the brand who buy from selfridges from the beginning. This could be made into a serie and we can learn some more makeup brand history for maybe vlogmas!
I enjoy watching all your videos, Kelly, including these “deep dives”. I appreciate all the research and hard work you put into them. You have a knack for tactfully and respectfully expressing your opinions and POV without being belittling, scornful, condescending, derogatory, or just downright mean. And you actually used CT’s products as well. You look very pretty in that signature “CT Look”, rockin’ that “glow”! I hope you and everyone within this community has a fabulous week ahead! 🙂
CT is too much for me. IMO she is over the top dramatic!! Her products are “amazing & magical”. I don’t feel the same. I Tend to not purchase CT partially due her personality.
I've never seen Charlotte interviews or how she talks. What stands out for me is that her and El Jeffa have the same mannerism. Who did it first her of J*?
i am gonna be honest - charlotte makes amazing makeup but it is too expensive. it makes me not wanna buy it, especially when dupes perform better. theyre not like hourglass who make one of a kind blushes. they just sell overpriced, glowy stuff.
Girl! Did you dye your hair a tad darker? If yes 😍 after a few 90’s headband (which I also love) videos, it struck me out of nowhere (Beautiful thumbnail, as per usual 🤍)
I have no issues with 'vintage' style juices/formulas (heavy on jasmine/tuberose, powder notes, aldehydes like in Chanel no. 5). But those have to be tweaked to suit modern day tastes and be well formulated.
I’m a professional makeup artist for over 30 years. I have many brands in my kit but not hers. I feel some of her products are good but not all and they are way overpriced for what they are. I don’t like her personality as well. I do respect her success and she is very talented
I have one CT lippie, in the K.I.S.S.I.N.G formula, and while I enjoy it (the shade Rose to Fame goes really well with the Natasha Denona Mini Crush palette), if I'm spending that much, I don't want my money going to a problematic brand. I didn't learn all this until after I treated myself to the lipstick, though. There are other great formulas out there, and I seek those out now.
Her makeup is not for mature women. Period. And I got mini pillow talk lipstick and pencil and nothing special. Everything is goin orange …but I am sure if I was willing to spend money could find something but just don’t think quality or eyeshadow payoff is not there. And don’t like these names which puts whichmacall mascaras into that don’t care category. Call me older fashioned….
Right. I always go back to my Dior lipsticks and mascara and my Natasha Denona eyeshadow because those work so well for my 50 yr old lips and eyes! I’ve tried everything Charlotte and it’s just meh compared!
I got a ct ad during this vid lol! I actually won't support ct specifically because she wears makeup to bed so her husband won't see her without. That in & of itself is so disappointing. Think about that. Her husband has never seen her without makeup. 🤦♂️😮💨
thank you so much Kelly for your video about CT :) I must say I was not attracted at first by yet another new makeup brand, especially with that focus on selling celebrities, and influencers... but I tried it on a show sponsored by CT, and I was hooked. even if I own more of NARS/MAC/Chanel products in my makeup kit, I now have the lipliners and lipsticks, the color ranges are so so so well done, especially in the nude/natural tones, and for every skincolor :) there is a lot of different undertones in similar colors, so this is very interesting to find the perfect color for one model or client. I think the next products I'm going to get are the pressed powders. they are very effective and can be very helpful for setting and especially retouching. I will wait for the PR package though :) it's beautifully made, the lady is funny, the smell of the product is incredible, but there is not a CT product that is absolutely necessary that you cannot find somewhere else :) these are great products but in my opinion no must haves :) have a lovely day 🌹✨
CT is a shrewd business woman who has capitalized on her success with celebrities and her signature, “Pillow Talk” -much like Coco Chanel did with her No. 5 fragrance and the “little black dress”. I wholeheartedly agree that CT goes overboard with her “buzz words” and self promotion. She does sound like a broken record. I find it ironic that Kate Moss is her “celebrity poster child” since Kate is famous for her “no makeup “ look. CT is right, though-people do tend to treat you differently according to how you look. I don’t agree with it, but it’s just human nature to gravitate towards the people we perceive as more attractive. I’m not saying this in a mean way, but I wonder what CT does look like without all that war paint? I imagine she’s pretty with or without it. She probably has a lovely porcelain complexion with charming freckles. It’s those unique, individual characteristics that set us one apart from others. For example, when you, Kelly, wear a “skin like” foundation and your freckles are visible. You have a lovely complexion and I appreciate that you don’t hide it with heavy foundation. I don’t believe CT wears a face full of makeup to bed. That’s obviously a sales gimmick. It’s common knowledge that going to bed without washing off one’s makeup adds years to one’s appearance, and CT is so beauty- oriented that she must be extremely conscientious about proper skin care. She has to maintain her looks in order to promote her merchandise. She does come across as vain and cashing in on her association with high maintenance celebrities. I don’t perceive her remarks about women who don’t wear makeup as deliberately rude or insulting; it’s just a ploy to sell more products. In my humble opinion, most women are beautiful with or without it. Reminds me of a quote by Audrey Hepburn: “Makeup cant help you if you are ugly on the inside-unless you eat the lipstick.” 😂 Or, as my sweet Daddy used to say, “Beauty is skin deep, but ugly goes right to the bone!” He would also say: “You don’t need makeup, because you can’t improve upon perfection.” 🥰 But all of like a little “help” once in a while, even if it is a little bit to boost our confidence. 🙂
I always assumed that she got the permission of people whose names she used for products. Wild to find out that she just does it without even telling them.
It kind of surprised me to hear that Charlotte apprenticed with Mary Greenwell! I watched a couple makeup tutorials by Mary on Lisa Eldridge's youtube channel and she seem to have literally the opposite makeup philosophy to Charlotte! Mary doesn't use brushes, just fingers, she's all about imperfection and using makeup for an artistic effect, not to gain something or make you look "better" than without makeup! Mary and Lisa seem much more aligned than Mary and Charlotte!
Charlotte definitely wants to be a celebrity. Why was she at Met Gala? That looked very weird and kinda pathetic to me because she is not from the celebrity world.
I think CT as a brand is way overhyped and way too expensive for her products. Some of her products maybe good and yes I've gone out searching for lipsticks in the same shade or dupes in shades for her lipsticks but I can't see myself buying her products, mostly because of the cost but mainly because I know other brands do it better.. and yes Charlotte.. your products can be duped.. exhibit A: Elf Halo Glow 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow! This indicates there is an unhealthy association between CT and makeup. That’s sad and is actually a turn off! Her beliefs appear to have morphed into mental illness surrounding makeup. That’s sad and pathetic. I think I am done with this brand and this is not good for young girls to hear her mantra as it promotes insecurity and the belief that you only have success if you are pretty. Wow. Eye opening video. Thank you.
Like Charlottes or not…no matter…she is correct in saying that there isn’t a woman in the world who wouldn’t look better wearing makeup…enough of it and correctly, I might add!!
The few times I've seen CT in a live spot or interview I found her...a little obnoxious if I'm being honest. I haven't tried a lot of her products but the handful I have tried ranged from returned it ( one of her expensive face/ eye palettes) to good ( lipliner & eyeliner pencil) to meh ( bronzer/ highlighter duo & lipstick) I mainly bought her overpriced lipstick because of hype & the LE special refillable lipstick case. I end up reaching for a Revlon lipstick over the CT which I find too matte & drying. But the color is beautiful. I know people kind of rag on the whole Pillow Talk thing but that shade range is actually very harmonious & flattering on most North/Western European Caucasian women ( & men) It really is. The perfume roll out was odd. I would have expected fragrances inspired by celebs or old timey movie stars in a very glam or sexy bottle, not Harry Potter packaging & aromatherapy. I can understand why people were confused. I'm not really offended by Charlotte's take on the transformative power of makeup either. Pretending that attractiveness & beauty aren't assets in life is disingenuous because we all know better. But I hate the psychological manipulation of "buy my products & you too can be Kate Moss." But that's kind of how most advertising works by tapping into your hopes & fears & offering you a solution to either get what you desire or fix a perceived problem. 😮
Tbh I don't buy CT anymore bc I feel like her line isn't brown/black person friendly. She also still has a lipstick named after J K Rowling which is disgusting. I liked some of her lipsticks but between the above and her attitude towards who should wear makeup and why, I just don't want to support her.
@@qingluo8069see why you might see that as a double standard, I just disagree. I think because most of the popular makeup brands are more lighter skin focused (and historically have been straight up non-inclusive), brands focusing on darker skin are filling a niche that's underrepresented. Ideally all brands would be inclusive but until that happens I don't mind brands like Pat's catering to darker complexions.
I understand your point and concern and you should be free to feel that way and voice it. But you must admit that CT isn't the only person to do this. I'm sure you can come up with many with little thought. Just look at what the Kardashians/Jenners have pulled over the years. Name dropping and using other people's culture to make a name and bank account for themselves.
I got a CT perfume in one of her mystery boxes a few years ago. It smelled so bad I could not GIVE it away. It would take a LOT of convincing before I ever purchased another perfume from that brand. 😂 the bottle was beautiful though.. honestly more old Hollywood and on brand than the new fragrances launched. In general.. I’m not a fan of her products anymore. I think this is probably because they are chronically overhyped and so disappointment is inevitable.

E.L.F. profits because she does the creative, the development of the product, and tests the waters, then they enjoy her hard work.
I’ve been genuinely wondering about her since the “missing lipsticks” campaign…
There is just something about her that really turns me off. The way she talks, like exaggerating her words, and her facial expressions (again super exaggerated), is just so annoying. Something about her just screams super narcissist to me. She's very into herself and it's just weird. Lol, just as I was typing this comment you starting talking about how she's acting weird these days and like playing a caricature of herself. That's exactly what I was trying to say!!! I just can't stand to watch her talk these days.
She seems hugely narccistic to me. Someone tell ms puffy pillow face she doesn't get to speak for all women.
The marketing for their perfume is hilarious, “harnessing the power of neuroscience” means absolutely nothing
I need you to know that I got an ad for the Magic Cream in the middle of this video.
Ohhh, I have missed a Kelly deep dive!🎉🎉
I’m not too familiar with CT! Thanks for a little history lesson.
Great video! Loved your analysis. Completed agree about the fragrance branding… Felt like a departure from the ‘Old Hollywood Fantasy’ vibes of the makeup line.
CT dupe for magic cream or water cream, i can't remember which, from nina pool, is the Cereve moistuizer in the tub.
I wish elf would dupe her setting powder cause I’m tired of spending so much on it 😂
The perfumes smell awful. If they were good, they’d pull the numbers
Just commented this. 😂☠️
I'm guessing she went to a really cheap supplier for those perfumes. 😅 I'm waiting for those to be dumped in my place just like what happened to her first perfume Scent of a Dream
@@lipstickzombie4981 Watch them end up in Marshalls and Ross, LOL.
The fact that they predominantly sell on line too puts me off buying a fragrance from them
I can't get dressed without Charlotte's setting spray and pressed powder. I also adore the Pillowtalk Push-Up Lashes mascara.
So funny how she adds beautiful before beautiful after in tutorials but she is the one who says that there is no one who looks better without makeup.
That tiered necklace is a beauty 🥰
Same! I think she's vile and her cheap plastic packaging for the price she sells it at. F**k off love 😂
Very thorough and insightful explanation. Nicely done!
Thank you so much!
I love your deep dive/rise & fall series!! So good!
You hit the nail right on the head. When I heard/saw that CT was now doing perfumes, I was like "huh? That's weird."
Thanks for the researches compiling the video. It resonates with my feeling of the brand who buy from selfridges from the beginning. This could be made into a serie and we can learn some more makeup brand history for maybe vlogmas!
Only tried one product (the filter foundation) , which I love. Everything else seems to be the same pale color or expensive
She is iconic…and knows very well how to sell her products 🎉😊
I love your deep dives so much. Thank you! ❤
Tbh Charlotte Tilbury just seems extremely shallow. Clearly working for her, though!💁♀️
I love her magic cream during winter ❤
If yes 😍 after a few 90’s headband (which I also love) videos, it struck me out of nowhere
(Beautiful thumbnail, as per usual 🤍)
Their perfumes suck. ☠️ Smell so vintage.
I have no issues with 'vintage' style juices/formulas (heavy on jasmine/tuberose, powder notes, aldehydes like in Chanel no. 5). But those have to be tweaked to suit modern day tastes and be well formulated.
Never bought a CT product. Never will.
Wow! What an excellent, thorough, and well researched video on Charlotte Tilbury. This was fantastic!
I’m a professional makeup artist for over 30 years. I have many brands in my kit but not hers. I feel some of her products are good but not all and they are way overpriced for what they are. I don’t like her personality as well. I do respect her success and she is very talented
Didn't know all that! Charlotte is defo larger than life. What a hoot!❤
There are other great formulas out there, and I seek those out now.
love love love these deep dives
This was very interesting! Thank you
What about the pentagrams on her packaging? Not even subtle imo.
Bro this is not a pentagram, it’s a hand drawn star. It’s not that deep 😅
Totally nothing to do with what you’re talking about but … where did you get your necklace! It’s beautiful!
i don't exactly like Charlotte herself, or even their marketing image, but i love their products. i don't have any products from her i don't like.
I always assumed that she got the permission of people whose names she used for products. Wild to find out that she just does it without even telling them.
Loved this episode & love this series. 💜🩷💙
Always enjoy your videos!
Hi Kelly, btw just wanna let you know that the elf GRWM album has a song called “Dupe” so it‘s their way of snapping bacc hahaha😂
Max Factor should have had this marketing
Charlotte definitely wants to be a celebrity. Why was she at Met Gala? That looked very weird and kinda pathetic to me because she is not from the celebrity world.
Neun Worte zum Support des Kanals und des Creaters ! 😇😺
Ooou I love these!!
Thanks for watching!
Plot twist, CT and e.l.f. are building a collab
I love when you make videos like this, so fun & interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Omg first comment!! ❤ Kellyyyyy
I swear she reminds me of the gabor sisters, with that darling❤😂
Ugh. Those quotes from her. Yeah, I’m glad I’ve never bought anything from her
Weird I got unsubscribed, glad I caught it!
Im shocked she sold her brand
her entire brand image is 1940s glamour and she comes out with a perfume line clearly aimed at adolescent girls, I never understood.
Interesting video, thank you!
I'm not really impressed with her brand. I've tried many items. Rarely reach for any of it.
What if their DNA was actually in the product 😬🤔💜
@@KathyStrickland-nh9vx I agree. I try to be mindful and informed of who I buy from and I encourage everyone to do the same.
Yes, this!
Love JK Rowling a great feminist… a wonderful woman standing for women ❤
I got a CT perfume in one of her mystery boxes a few years ago. It smelled so bad I could not GIVE it away. It would take a LOT of convincing before I ever purchased another perfume from that brand. 😂 the bottle was beautiful though.. honestly more old Hollywood and on brand than the new fragrances launched. In general.. I’m not a fan of her products anymore. I think this is probably because they are chronically overhyped and so disappointment is inevitable.
