  • Jeffree Star Cosmetics has become arguably the largest influencer brands ever. From its early days of just three initial liquid lipsticks, to the money mountain it creates now, theyve grown an incredible business. But theyve done so through countless scandals that have, on multiple occaisions, almost caused the end of the company. And yet, it doesnt seem like their affinity for scandals will slow down any time soon

    I was a professional makeup artist- and Jeffree knows his makeup. Genuinely, his formulations are above average for their prices. Jeffree used to be a makeup artist so it’s not that surprising. And he’s quite creative, so the colours are always so fun.
    I don’t use his products for ethical reasons, but damn I miss them. A lot of his “brutal honest” reviews were very also genuinely fair takes. That’s how he earned their trust 🤷🏻‍♀️ he’s good at what he does. Made a lot of mistakes as a person though.

    I’ve always said that Jeffee Star and Trisha Paytas are two people that come to mind that understand the power of having a controversial brand . The key is to virtually start off with that brand image . It typically doesn’t work for those that have an intial clean cut image . By being a polarizing figure it virtually guarantee you won’t be cancelled or held accountable for your actions . This is because people expect that behavior from that individual after awhile . The problem in lies that this image has the ability to be complacent after a million cycles of this behavior . There is always another person that comes on the scene that is willing to do more . Then you see the Jeffree Star types trying to re-brand more clean cut . This typically doesn’t go over well because they alienate there loyal audience.This is typically why they go back to the controversial narrative .

    The thing about Jeffree that sets him apart from other influencers is that he has money and doesn't need to be bought off for favoring companies and their products. In addition, it also helps that he is brutally honest which in this day in age is refreshing to see someone be honest and not care about being "canceled"

    Def not a fan of Jeff nor am I his target audience but he was always in an interesting position as he has his own company. Apart from Tati, if he would get dropped by a another brand he could always rely on his own brand. He falls into the category of being a terrible person yet people still ride for him. Same category as Shane Dawson and Kanye West. However, when it comes to the products, he shares the same logic that people who own the products have, and that is the product is solid and can divorce them from the person. Very interesting topic.

SA allegations, racism, etc. He checks all boxes of being a horrible person and it has caught up to him by making his brand stagnant. This was really interesting and I don’t understand why anyone would pushback on your video as it was balanced, neutral and more exploring his business model/history. I think the brand does really well due to the association on how “honest” his reviews are - in a beauty community with brand trips, excessive sponsorships, affiliate codes and questionable mascara advertising JS seems to resonate to his audience as not being easily swayed. I think he also had people later re-evaluate why they unfollowed over the Tati/JC situation afterwards when JC got in hot water himself. I also feel like more people buy JSC then they let on as they may not post it outright on IG but you can see some influencers share it in their stories, presenting a picture that some people don’t want the association but want the products. I’ve never followed him or bought the products but I it find the brands evolution interesting as a business.

In one of his first videos post breakup with Nate, Jeffree revealed that the house in Michigan they stayed in for a time was an investment property that was later sold for huge profit. There was also a drama channel that talked about Jeffree having extensive investments in property and the stock market that he had done really well in.

It really only grew to prominence in the 80s because marketers realised they could harness it for attention for non exciting things. I recommend looking into the guerilla girls, united colours of benetton, diesel and all the many charities who all famously used shock marketing through the 80s and 90s as well because its super interesting history 🩵

    Great video and analysis!! As a vile human being that I’ve learnt that he is and as much as I despise him, his business will never go anywhere. He’s a smart and calculated man, honestly it’s sad that people will still choose to idealise this man but it’s not surprising especially when there are die hard stans for Shane Dawson, Kanye West and so on. People will continue to fall for his reviews, his products and recommendations especially with the years he has now built his brand.
    He gets cancelled? He’ll find a way to come back via marketing or trends.
    A TikTok makeup reviewer gets called out? Fans will find a way to bring him back for his reviews.
    It’s insane and honestly I admire him for that, but for my peace of mind, I’m never supporting this man again or watching any content about him.

      Nobody is falling for anything, though. I think the people who act holier than thou and boycott/cancel brands and people are really the ones 'falling' for the sheep mentality. I always ask this question to such people: do you know the political values and beliefs of the CEO of every single supermarket, restaurant, gas station etc that you shop for? If not, why don't you investigate every single company owner for every single company you spend money with? I PROMISE you that many, many CEOs of brands you give a ton of money to (even your local markets) are vile people too. But if you don't care then why cherry pick? Personally if I like, want or need something I'll buy it. I could not give one single fuck how good or bad a person the CEO or creator to whom my money goes, is. I need something, I get it. Period. I don't have to be friends with these people. For what it's worth, Jeffree is not racist so IDK why people think such bad things about him.

    One of the biggest reasons I have never liked Jeffree Star is on account of the first time I ever met him. I was living in Santa Cruz California and I have been doing makeup for a couple of girls that modeled for American apparel. They had American apparel underwear parties and because this was 2007 they got a lot of attention on Myspace and during one of their soirees I met Jeffree who was just starting to 'brand' himself. Despite the girls I knew having a decent amount of friends their parties were basically just 15 or 20 of us drinking wine in their back garden while listening to music. Despite the party being such a low key event Jeffree still acted like he was above everyone and constantly used the word relevant in order to, I don't know, try to seem important and more interesting. He was hella rude and belittled everyone. The clincher? I am pretty sure he was living in his car and doing favors for cash if you know what I mean. I've always hated bullies and one would think that with his current situation he'd be a little more modest but no, he has always been a jerk.

    • @lesliemartin3
      @lesliemartin3 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I feel as though you may have misunderstood my reasons for posting. I'm not shaming anyone who has ever made money doing sex work. I have been in the industry myself for nearly 20 years whether it be dancing, bartending at a nude show bar, providing make up services for adult film actresses etc. I have never been the type of person to shame anyone let alone shame someone for doing something I have done in order to keep my life in order.
      My reason for explaining the situation Jeffree Star was in back then was because I was shocked that someone who came from nothing would ever dare to be so cruel to others. Not only has he been known to have participated in sex work in order to get by, he was also bullied in high school quite a bit. To have experience like that i find it quite shocking that in the last 15 years I've seen him become the one of the biggest online bullies.
      He tears people apart for every single thing despite his own experiences and seems to call people out for things he was guilty of time and time again.
      I'll never understand nor will I sit back and watch without loaning my two cents as bullying is something I can't tolerate. As for your comment, I know you are trying to stand up for those who you felt may have been offended but that wasn't what I wrote nor was it my intention.

    Jeffree is a very smart and clever businessman. I personally don't think that the JSC empire is going to end anytime soon. First of all, Jeffree's fanbase is extremely loyal and faithful so I don't think that his brand or any of his other businesses are going to disappear or stop anytime soon cause his audience is going to support him and follow him no matter what. Not to mention that his products are actually really good and he's a pretty legit name and figure in the industry now so regardless of his reputation or past, I think that both his makeup and skin care lines are going to be okay in the future, as long as the quality of the product remains consistent, they should be just fine.
    The only possible downfall of his empire in my opinion is the boredom or lack of interest of his community in his products which won't happen in my opinion cause they are so hardcore, or another major scandal that would eventually destroy his image and therefore his business which again it is very unlikely that something like this would happen considering how careful and quiet he's been lately especially regarding his image.

However, so did Kanye West, and through his public persona he has lost so much, and it doesn’t need to be as bad as his was for the celebrity to lose their customers faith, so it will always be a risk when he treads that thin line of controversy. I’m actually curious if he was to sell the name on, or sell the business on when he gets a bit older, will they have him out, like two-faced did, or will they try to deify him like Chanel did. I know that, for me, I decided to quit buying JS products because of two reasons: the liquid lips are not as good as they should be (they dry out in the tube way too fast) and I can't justify paying that much money for an eyeshadow palette that's full of circus-themed colors. I love the quality of the JS shadows, though. Every company has a dark side to some degree and every one of them is problematic in some way. I cannot stand JS as a person or a personality and can overlook that to a point. By the time you factor in that most of his products fall flat for me, it's not worth supporting his company.

    Times change and influencer brands are dying out and being overshadowed by celebrity brands like Fenti Beauty, Haus Labs, Rare Beauty etc that sticked around and did more than 3 products and disappeared when thinking of celebrity brands(Kesha Rose). Their management and teams are just way more colossal and owned by bigger companies than those of influencer brands. Also they have celebrity faces behind the brand that have teams behind the celebrity to avoid them from ruining their careers by not saying discriminating things or running around with swastika stars or ranting on instagram/twitter. Jeffree Star is trying hard playing money ping pong by releasing all these different brands and releases but eventually he has to face the reality when all of them just fail to bring in any profit. Creating a store in middle of Wyoming... why???

    • @underskinYT
      @underskinYT  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a shame really, that influencer brands and celebrity brands seem to have the same kind of management, what we saw from R.E.M. really reminded me of that. I know there are a few that have much bigger conglomerates behind them, obviously Fenty. But for the most part, they seem to be coming from the same place of having a fan base and trying to sell something to them that they would use, and make up, it’s just a very easy segment to put your personal branding on, so it became popular, and obviously profitable. Celebrities and normal people are no different, I don’t doubt at all that most celebrities would have said and done things that could cancel their career, but, because they don’t share their lives as much as influencers, we will not know. Is it better the Devil you know? Or is it ignorance is bliss?

    I am, unfortunately, old enough to remember Jeffree's behaviour back in the early/mid 00s as they happened and have never bought a product from his lines as a result. I'm not savvy enough to track down a lot of the things he said and did back then, but it was utterly irredeemable, even at a time when homophobia, misogyny, and racism were all still frequently used as the butt of jokes.
    It's been absolutely wild to see him embraced so unwaveringly by younger millennials and gen z who by all accounts are the most anti-bigotry generations in human history. Alas.

    I genuinely think Jeffree Star is a man with talent. He made himself from nothing (for real) and then when he could finally launch his brand, you could see he was really good at doing make up but also, put relly decent quality products out there. I mean, No one ever had something terrible to say about the products ... like allergies, rashes, hairs on their lipsticks :v hahahaha He really put decent professional quality in the brand. NOW, I think he ruined all the legit talent he has with his involvement in DRAMA and several sh*tty attitudes he has had. It's sad srsly

      I really agree that he is obviously a very talented person and clearly very intelligent, having taught himself the industry in a time before the internet was a full encyclopaedia and then having taught himself cosmetic chemistry, its quite amazing imo. But yeah, his plan for attention, which did the company so well in the early days is now their biggest liability, its a wonder what they can or will do about it

    I really like that he goes above and beyond for his products and makes a quality that no other brand is willing to do. Because he cut the middle man and directly ships to his customers he can do it. Nevertheless, his eyeshadow palettes have a very confusing color scheme which is also not suitable for everyday make-up. Therefore, I think the brand has to reach into other fields like more skincare.

    not as optimistic as you about the future of this. look at his recent launches - the brand has lost its edge. the new products aren't good, inspiring, innovative, etc. he got lucky and made some good decisions which enabled him to ride the liquid lip and YT makeup waves, but i dont think jeffree is capable of reinventing himself/his brand as quickly as he needs to to save it

      The people that typically have this mindset are the people that it doesn’t affect. Explaining and excusing one’s behavior is not an apology. Repeatedly behaving in a way is not a mistake. I’ve never accidentally been vile. The fact that people think being a horrible human being was ever okay and we all “grow,” is wild to me. Like I said in a U.S. History class in college: “just because your ancestors didn’t consider my ancestors as human, didn’t mean they didn’t know that they were.” Just say you’re cool with it because it doesn’t affect you and move along.
