This is British brand MG’s ‘ID.’ moment. While the Chinese-owned firm has dabbled with EVs in the past - including the impressive affordable ZS crossover and MG5 estate - this MG4 family hatchback is where the company’s push with its next generation of models really begins. That’s why, in almost every sense, you can see parallels with Volkswagen’s ID.3 - hence this being a crucial car for MG.
For a start, both models are competing in the same sector and aiming for the same buyers: everyone from city dwellers to families who might use the MG4 as a second car, as well as company car drivers keen to cut their Benefit-in-Kind tax bill.
There are even more similarities when you analyse the key figures. The MG4 EV is based on an all-new platform for the brand, called MSP, which stands for Modular Scalable Platform. Like the ID.3, it employs a rear-mounted motor producing 200bhp, which is fed by a 64kWh battery in this top-spec Trophy Long Range version for a claimed range of 270 miles. Opt for the more affordable SE Long Range and this increases to 281 miles. Meanwhile, all MG4s have 150kW rapid charging, so a 10-80 per cent top-up for the bigger battery takes 35 minutes. Use a 7kW home wallbox and it’ll take nine hours to fully replenish. As Nicola Hume finds out, the MG4 is a credible EV competitor, irrespective of the low asking price.

@@Uouttooo Same here in fact its looks were what started me getting interested in it - before learning about the great price and great reviews. It's just like my old LEAF which I always hear people say it's ugly but I actually stop every now and then to admire its lines - the front end, I have to admit I'm not a great fan of the rear end of the LEAF.
She's probably one of those who like flowing lines like the Mini or Ora Cat, while I think those are ugly and prefer angular lines like this MG4.

Why do people say that this car is cheap as if the must be something wrong with it. It's not "impossibly cheap", it's the right car at the right price point. What it does show is that all the other "European" brands need to stop ripping us off just because EVs are the current trend. The conversation about EV prices being in line with ICE cars is because ICE cars are getting more expensive and not that EVs are getting cheaper. It's great that brands like MG seem to get the point. Good, well spec'd cars that the average person can actually afford. Well done MG

I heard about this car and took one for a test last month. Its good, fast with loads of tech BUT it has a lot of cheap and nasty materials inside, seats are fake thin leather, there are lots of nasty scratchy hard plastics everywhere, no handle inside for passengers to grab (the one just above the door we all use at some point), no lights in rear for passengers to see their seat belts etc, no lumbar support on drivers seat and seat isn't that comfy it's ok average but no lumbar makes it below average overall, drivers display is small and very basic, everything is changed in the infotainment system inc drive modes which are so small that iys very hard to change while driving which is the whole point of the drive modes, air con is controlled on infotainment screen and the buttons/icons and again really small (odd on such a large screen) which makes it hard to use. I mean yes it's great value for money but it doesn't take an expert to see in seconds where all the money has been saved. This is sadly quantity over quality.

Also, her complaint about the rare roof spoilers was weird considering that she failed to mention that if you upgraded to the Trophy trim the full beauty of the spoilers comes into play. And as for the rear wrap-around lights - she hates them here but loves them on her Kia Sportage....LoL

@@georgedowns4034 .....the cars being different is not what I'm trying to address, it is the particular item/area of her objection that I find odd. In this review she said the way the MG4's lights wrap around and project out like a shelf is not to her liking. The Kia Sportage that she just bought for herself has lights that wrap around and PROJECT outward like a SHELF also. In fact, that is one of the main selling points regarding why people like the sportage due to the way the rear is slopped/curved upward and illuminated. A very similar reason why almost everyone else that has reviewed this car like these lights that she is now hating on.

Hey, Nicola here. The sportage and the MG 4 rear ends are completely different. There is a full blown shelf at the back of the MG 4 which I wasn’t keen on, the sportage doesn’t. I don’t think you can compare the two. But how I feel about each cars looks is always down to opinion. Some might like it, but for me, nah. Sportage has a glorious rear end, MG 4….nah.😊

I've watched many reviews of the MG4, and many car reviews in general, having worked for Audi for many years. In all that time, I have never ever watched a review that had such a subliminal racist undertone! The amount of times that the word "cheap" was used and emphasized, was astounding! Add this, together with the suggestion that anything that was of quality on the car was stolen from other manufacturers - "it's almost like MG have copied their homework - know what I mean?" Well, I suppose we do, nudge nudge wink wink! Appalling!

Only real counter is the geo political stability currently. Potential soured relations with China would effect parts, technical support for franchises and ultimately residual values. Crazy times.

Why do they give motoring journalists the opportunity to test cars and put the results out when they obviously have no clue what they have been given? The panels on the hatch are obviously blanking plates because the Trophy version (the one she claims to love) has a roof spoiler which attaches here. Then the whole "bugged about everything being in the touch screen" stuff. If she'd been bothered to find out or if someone could be bothered to tell her she'd find that each drivers own preferred functions can be moved to the steering wheel buttons, they havent defined what you are doing with the car, they've said "here you go, the functions are there, put them where you like".
