was looking at the trims and specs on MG website, it's amusing that the base model is also the quickest as it has the same motor as the other two, but with less tech and smaller battery it's just lighter
@@RewardThe I got mine from arnold clark MG linwood. I put my order in months before and when the first batch came in I didn't get any allocation. However they contacted me towards the end of September and told there had my a cancellation for a white LR which is what I wanted to so i was lucky and got that one.
Spot on with the efficiency, I’ve got 3.7 over my first 1000 miles in my SE LR. 4 on country roads and 3.5 on motorway. Charging……you have to test it Richard!! MG have understated the charging rate! I got 142kW for quite a while on Ionity…….went from 22-80% in 23 mins! A French review backs this up on TH-cam. MFG 150kW charger maxed at 100kW though. Ride/handling balance is one of the strongest points, very pleased with that. Bugs: Software related. No scheduled climate, can’t activate climate easily when car is plugged in unless it’s charging in my experience. Plus lights come on when pre-heating, which is a bit distracting / attracting. Hopefully stuff that MG will sort with software updates 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Mine was recovered to the dealer last week. Hopeful it can be fixed quickly, but someone is getting a replacement car as it needed a full motor rebuild.
Just on the MFG 100kW. This is because MFG use chargers that are limited to a set number of amps. 800v cars will achieve 150kW but 400v cars like this MG, and most others on the market, will only get around 100kW. 800v cars get more kW with the same amps (Volt x Amp = Watts). Apologies if you knew this, hopefully it males sense to folks reading it who didn't know.
I like the shot at 11:22 when Richard appears to be driving in the middle of the road into oncoming traffic while in voice over he is saying his eyesight is pretty good 😂
Thanks for reviewing a Brixton Blue MG4 with the extra battery size and spoilers. We agreed on the car. My wife liked the Orange, I didn’t. I liked the Red but my wife said we had done red (current ICE) so the colour we BOTH liked was the blue, so our blue car will arrive soon. Cars do look different in 3D. We love the design. It boldly says it’s a REAL electric vehicle from the wheels up, not an adapted ICE design. We like the way it sits on the road and drives. I am especially pleased it has an MG badge. I have to admit I wanted an MG so it’s nice they made one I can afford and we both want an EV.
Great video as usual Rich. I have driven a Tesla M3 LR for two years, I test drove the MG4 SE std range at the weekend and I’m incredibly impressed with this car. It’s wonderfully planted and solid. Steering is great and I can see myself doing long trips in it. It has some scratchy surfaces but so does the Tesla and this is a 25,999k car. My wife and I actually enjoyed it that much that I’ve got one on order to replace my wife’s VW diesel. It arrives in a few weeks. Very excited 😊
Copy that on the usual high standard of RS reviews. I wondered about the smaller battery (51 kWh?) which is I believe LFP as opposed to NMC for the bigger one as tested here. LFP has certain advantages but it would be good to see a side by side comparison on a road trip to see how the charging times compared. The LFP version would have to be charged more often but would the point to point times be much different given that LFP is supposed to be able to sustain high charging rates for longer.
@@kiae-nirodiariesencore4270 I’m happy to do a test or two when we receive it. We went with the standard for the LFP. Charging to 100% will be like charging to 80% with the nmc chemistry so didn’t quite see the point of spending the extra 2.5k. We also plan to keep it long term so our twins can take ownership of it when they pass their tests (few years yet) and the LFP will hopefully fair better long term. We’ll see though 😊
I think the 'classic' Ioniq 28 was 'better value' 5 years ago! And the Renault Zoe, though not as high spec was practically given away at the same time!
We have a red MG4 SE standard range to collect in 2 weeks. We went for the standard range as my wife drives around 40 to 50 miles a day and she will charge at home and we're happy to charge en route for any longer journeys. We've not driven one yet but your review, along with others, has given us a good idea of what to expect. I have never bought a new car before, or even nearly new, but I was bowled over with the idea of the MG4 when I first saw it and we will be getting rid of a diesel CLK which averages 30 mpg this weather and requires quite a bit of maintenance each year.
MG4 is what the industry needs to set a new bench mark for quality, price and warranty (not just battery) at a much affordable level. I hope this helps OEMs to push the prices down then more people can get in an EV. If this is what MG/SAIC can do at 26k the futures attractive
Prices are coming down slowly. MG had the initial push with the MG4, the Renault 5 has the same equipment as the Zoe, but will be released in early 2023 starting at £18k
Had a test drive today, ordered the trophy in red, up to 16 weeks delivery. Finally parting with my 420d coupe. Great and informative vid as always.🙌🙌👍. Really happy you liked the car, quite a lot of good reviews, and a few daft ones comparing with cars 6-10k more expensive?? .
Excellent video on what looks to be a very compelling vehicle. It’s so nice to see reviews on the more affordable end of the EV spectrum, and you and your team have been especially good with those! Keep up the great job!
My Ioniq5 has just been delayed again and I have no real date to go as it still has no build slot after 10 months of waiting! As disappointed as I am at not getting the car I really wanted I have cancelled the order... I have found a Black MG4 Trophy that will be with me in Jan through my work scheme. Similar range, all the kit that matters day to day and a hell of lot cheaper!! Can't wait to drive it... Never bought a car without a test drive!!
6:15 you mentioned the possibility of the rear seat belts rattling. A simple solution, I think, plug them in. If you’re not carrying passengers in the back just plug them in. If you are carrying passengers in the back, the seat belts “should” be plugged in. As a result no more potential rattles. I really like the MG4. It is pretty much ideal for me. A medium sized hatch back (I currently drive a VW Polo) at a price I can actually afford. Very informative video. Thank you. 👍
Thank you. It wasn’t that easy to find fault with this vehicle in a quick review. Looks like those Chinese owners want to keep some sportiness associated with that MG badge, so I say good for them. There is definitely some value to the MG (Morris Garages) name in the UK - Spoken by a Canadian who has previously owned three Made in England products. BTW, don’t forget that many of your subscribers are part of an international audience, most of whom would not understand what you meant when you said the charging port was on the “nearside”. Nearside and offside are known to me as I have spent way too many hours reading BMC service manuals in my younger days.
The lack of "oh shit handles", a light in the back and a rear window wiper, slightly under-stuffed seats, plus some early niggles with oil spills and the automatic safety features are the only negatives I've heard so far. But there's a huge amount this car does incredibly well. Good to hear the ride is that good - confirms what we thought on our brief test drive.
Excellent and fair minded review, this is the exact colour and model I have ordered from Inverness MG, the black roof is a great contrast to the blue body. For those that don't know this model has a 369° camera, sat nav, electric drivers seat, extra long rear LED lights, & heated steering wheel.
@Macmonkey1000 Yes they do have a demo car available for test drives, (see their Facebook page) I'm told my car will be available at the end of October.
Enjoyed that review Richard. Amazing what can be done with pricing ……. Pretty sure this is the way forward to make electric affordable. Just need the infrastructure to support it all.
Good review as usual, I thought you would have your hands on an MG4 soon Richard. Looks like a completely new platform, presume there will be more models in the future using the same. Amazing value. 👍
Great review, Richard. I have a test drive booked this week at Hendy MG in Poole. Looking forward to it especially as it will be the first time I’ve ever driven an EV!
There are a couple of customisable buttons on the steering that you can set to control the regenerative level and the driving mode. You can also adjust the clicker volume.
It’s good to see you agree with my thoughts…I ordered mine here in italy last week in the deluxe trim (trophy) with grey seats and orange paint… Hopefully will arrive in February about the same time as my modelX plaid 😊
its a nice car and a step in the right direction for sure, but im really hoping it does well so the rest of the chinese brands come here too, like....xpeng, nio, byd etc, then the prices of ev's will be forced to plummet to a sensible enough price to encourage more buyers
The only reason prices will be 'forced to plummet' will be when supply exceeds demand. The market, as a whole, is a VERY long way from there for the foreseeable future.
I think it has to do with the import tax and dealership markups? Because this car is roughly $10,000 cheaper in China, the same for other Chinese cars that are planning to rollout in Europe later this year/earlier next year.
I have the Se long range on order, should get it next week. I did have a ID3 on order from LAST October and now quoting 1st April… 18 months! I think they have done me a favour 😊
I have a model 3 and we now have one of these on the drive for the wife. It’s a great little car much better ride than Tesla as you say. Some niggles on driver assistance and other bits but I guess updates will improve on that.
One reason I'm interested in an MG4 is the placement of the charge port in the rear left corner. We're planning to drive in France next year and the charging infrastructure isn't great. However Tesla have opened some of their Superchargers to other vehicles so this would be an easy vehicle to access them.
Got this on order Trophy Blue. Every so often outside the luxury market something special comes along out of nowhere. This is that something special. BTW audit your life how much do you own and enjoy from China? I know you’re trying to discover something not designed in USA/EU/U.K. with Chinese money and build. Ahhh the snobs will miss out such a bloody shame!!! Before you snob out as I nearly did get down to those MG dealers - you’ll see.
Great review, like the honesty and real world stuff, like the bumpy road test and corner handling. Did suspect the centre console would be tricky to use whilst driving , one of the few negatives in an alluring car. Thanks !
If this had been out when i bought my Cupra i think i'd have plumped for this. Personally i like the Cupra but it does have a few little annoying issues with it, but a bit like you, i do look for things that could be better (bloody haptic's spring to mind!). Majority of my miles in the Cupra is between Cwmbran and Bristol (M4) yet after 8000 miles i'm still averaging 4kw/h so i'm not unhappy with that. MG defo one to consider for the future, nice seeing a manufacturer putting in a better priced motor. Hopefully it forces others to follow suit
useful review thanks, certainly seems to be the car of the moment. Just curious RE: the lane assist function, seen a few videos saying it's too intrusive, is default and has to be disabled start of every journey if you don't want it and can't be switched off in settings. Any thoughts?
I think it looks decent, not jaw dropping but much better than a lot of newcomers (Ioniq!). Sure it will sell like hot cakes! Base model is £26K, long range is £28.5K and this one at £31.5K
Every new EV that comes to the market is great news, good to see they are getting the price down for people, But it's not my cuppa, not a fan of all the sharp, angular styling and too many buttons and switches etc, but not bad for the masses, well done MG !
I don't know if the MG4 has it and I’m waiting for my MG ZS EV to be delivered to see if it exist in the UK version but in the MG i drove in France hidden in one of the settings was indicator noise level which by default was about mid-range. (if you have an MG ZS let me know if it is also in the UK version). For some drivers it's good to have them loud so you don't follow them for 30 miles wondering where and when are they going when they finely turn nearly into you just as you decide they are not going to change lane and decide to pass them.
Thank you for the great review! Around 7m29s you mentioned that you would show us how to polish the swirl marks out of the black plastic. I was just wondering when you would be doing a video on this?
I was really taken with one of these for my wife until I read the warranty document, not much covered for 7 years with some items only covered for 3 months! Make sure you know what you are getting into, a huge shame as the car drives great.
It's remarkable value. OK, only 18 months ago you could have had a genuine VW ID3 for a similar price, in low-ish trim. Now, even the lowest trims and specs are more expensive, and this Trophy is the current top of the MG4 options, with a heat pump no less. Just imagine when these high demand prices start to fall. This will sell.
Great review again Richard. I have exactly the same model and colour MG4 on order but have yet to manage a test drive, although this is booked for next week. Currently own an Enyaq IV60 which is a lovely large SUV, again - agree with your review of the Enyaq, in particular the quality of the interior which is up there with Audi imo. Also just taken delivery of a Tesla Model 3 SR which having driven 600 miles in first week of ownership am enjoying more than I thought I would. My “dilemma” do I cancel the MG order or sell the Enyaq? I want to enjoy the Model 3 for a while.
My MG4 trophy should be delivered in a week or two. Drove their demonstrator, the only niggle was the overzealous 'lane assist' which didn't really like narrow lanes with side potholes filled in with crushed chalk (I believe you can turn it off). Oh, and I think the rear end looks awful - but you can't see that when you're driving :)
Owners say that there is a menu option to reduce or even switch off the volume of the various bongs the car makes. Plus, there are 2 'programmable' buttons on the steering wheel for toggling through regen modes etc... for the stuff you might regularly want to adjust, but not via the central touchscreen while driving.
Torn between the blue and white. Have a white honda hrv. Decided to go for the blue as every other car on the road is white. Leap of faith. Ordered it last week so should have it in march. 8 weeks for delivery in Ireland. Hope it comes with privacy glass
Won’t be in the market for an EV anytime soon. If I did, this would be on the shortlist for me. That shade of blue to my eyes in that car would be Manchester City blue 😂😂 Red or orange would be the colour for me. I’m glad to see it has more eye popping colours to compliment the rakish exterior design.
Great video, thanks Richard. Good to have your opinion on how it drives and handles compared to other EVs. I was really impressed with the suspension and steering on my test drive. The MG4 would be a compelling package at £26-32k anyway, but that it drives nicely is an added bonus. The question is, how do other manufacturers think they can charge £10k more?
I still don't consider £30K to be affordable but it's heading the right direction. Just hope the electric price increases don't tip the balance for EVs.
The energy providers - or at least EDF and Octopus Energy haven't increased their off-peak EV charging costs. They're still at the same cost as months ago on their websites. It's mainly the public charge networks which have increased their costs. If your driving profile means you'll only need to use public charging on a handful of occasions each year, and can charge at home most of the time on off-peak, then the EV still wins hands down over ICE.
Richard always quotes the average day time rate to make things very equal with the ice comparison, all ev drivers can get a ev car rate, I'm paying .075p a kw at night with my model 3 and never had to charge any where else up to now in 6k miles so 100 kw costs £7.50 it's peanuts to run
Great video. Is there anything that you could describe about the headlamps? I just subscribed your channel today. will follow for more videos...Cheers mate.
As to the Chinese love of those bonging sounds reported on other reviewers channels, I would just pull out the fuses that are relative to the sounds that anyone doesn't need or that I would find annoying. I am not Chinese and do not drive well when distractions are present. Those sounds are most likely appropriate for someone that has attention deficiencies or a peripheral vision acuity issue... As always Richard, a superb review of a car that definitely needs a look see and a purchase from your place of business. If I lived in the UK I would be a customer for sure..
I have been contemplating an MG for some months now and come the new year may be looking to change my current vehicle. I like the look of the MG4 but a couple of points that disappoint me about the car is it doesn't look to have a drop down rear seat arm rest and what appears to be the lack of a rear screen wiper is a serious mistake on a hatch back.
Sorry but I notice I said about 150bhp but 150kw equates to about 200bhp!
Why don't you just say if it's better than a Cupra or an ID3 or M3? Once you rank it's competition then tell them is 10k cheaper or 15k for M3?
Sounds about right. The motor in the e-Niro is 150 kW and is rated at I think 201 bhp in old (ICE) money.

I come to you first for EV matters, this review substantiates my decision. Impartiality guaranteed. Even though you love the model 3 too much..... ;)
Take away the MG badge and add any other, the price is increased defacto. car badge snobbery
Prices are coming down slowly. MG had the initial push with the MG4, the Renault 5 has the same equipment as the Zoe, but will be released in early 2023 starting at £18k
Best review of the MG4 so far 👏Well done…
Looks really nice and love that blue colour ..great review
Game-changer
Had a test drive today, ordered the trophy in red, up to 16 weeks delivery. Finally parting with my 420d coupe. Great and informative vid as always.🙌🙌👍. Really happy you liked the car, quite a lot of good reviews, and a few daft ones comparing with cars 6-10k more expensive?? .
Interesting to hear. I'm contemplating getting rid of my M135I after looking at one of these today.
MG have done great over the years still loves my MG ZS EV 2021👌
Excellent video on what looks to be a very compelling vehicle.
It’s so nice to see reviews on the more affordable end of the EV spectrum, and you and your team have been especially good with those!
Keep up the great job!
MGs are becoming super!! I have an MG ZS LR 2022 model. Super cars!
11:22 you nearly took that guy out while talking about having good vision! 😅
Exactly my reaction… you can see the guy’s brakelight coming on 😳
Great review, had a test drive yesterday and placed an order, my first EV, should have it by the end of Jan.
Thank you. 👍
Bit annoying to have to do that though, especially for a family car. But it didn't sound like it was actually a problem based on the driving review
Please keep up the great reviews, the 4wd version when it comes out sounds awesome.
A 369 camera cool!😊
@@pluckyduckgamingnl7030 Alright, my mistake obviously a typo, so sorry 😂
@@samoyedpuppy7473 it was just funny I get you meant 360:)
Fantastic review as usual Richard look like MG will definitely put the cat among the pigeons
Ordered mine today, standard range.🙂
you can reduce the indicating noise in the settings
Good positive review - concurs with other MG4 reviews on TH-cam so obviously a great value car that is a joy to own. Thank you.
Great as always, we're getting ours soon.
Thanks Rich for another great review. Nice to see that not all EVs cost the earth but the build quality is still good👍🏽👊🏽. Not a colour of my choice
At least it's not white, yawn.
Love the looks. And the colour too it grew on me. Great review. Best wishes
The more I see the better this looks.
Saw a review of an orange one, liked that colour, this might even look better.
I have one and it is a rather good car
Almost half the price of a Model 3, and V2L to boot. Can't really argue with that.
I took this exact model for a test drive yesterday I’m very impressed with it, seriously looking the get on soon
There are a couple of customisable buttons on the steering that you can set to control the regenerative level and the driving mode. You can also adjust the clicker volume.
It’s good to see you agree with my thoughts…I ordered mine here in italy last week in the deluxe trim (trophy) with grey seats and orange paint…
Hopefully will arrive in February about the same time as my modelX plaid 😊
Check the "James and Kate" review of your exact car/ colour.
its a nice car and a step in the right direction for sure, but im really hoping it does well so the rest of the chinese brands come here too, like....xpeng, nio, byd etc, then the prices of ev's will be forced to plummet to a sensible enough price to encourage more buyers
Impressed with the car and your review, P85 owner since new 2014, 125,000 uk miles, cheap EVs are no longer the cheap seats but quality machines.
I have the Se long range on order, should get it next week. I did have a ID3 on order from LAST October and now quoting 1st April… 18 months! I think they have done me a favour 😊
Wait for the hot hatch version 0-60 under 4 secs
I have a model 3 and we now have one of these on the drive for the wife. It’s a great little car much better ride than Tesla as you say. Some niggles on driver assistance and other bits but I guess updates will improve on that.
MG4 IS not a little car ... It could be a family car too
3:10 - Ooh! It comes with a pre-fingerprinted touch screen! Nice. ;)
Thank you so much .. looking forward to seeing MG5 review please when you can ❤️
nice video as always. I totally dig the looks ... and the price is also very interesting
Great review Richard 👌
One reason I'm interested in an MG4 is the placement of the charge port in the rear left corner. We're planning to drive in France next year and the charging infrastructure isn't great. However Tesla have opened some of their Superchargers to other vehicles so this would be an easy vehicle to access them.
There are also 15 Tesla charging sites in the uk that are now available for none Tesla users.
I enjoyed watching the Video Review 😊
Got this on order Trophy Blue. Every so often outside the luxury market something special comes along out of nowhere. This is that something special. BTW audit your life how much do you own and enjoy from China? I know you’re trying to discover something not designed in USA/EU/U.K. with Chinese money and build. Ahhh the snobs will miss out such a bloody shame!!! Before you snob out as I nearly did get down to those MG dealers - you’ll see.
As long as you only look at the front it looks nice 😁, handy light shelf at the back for ya coffee or pint 😉
Reminds me very much of the Nissan Leaf from the rear! Even down to the diffuser and centre fog light!
Good ev though at reasonable cost.
I'm not sure about the colour, but the design looks good.
You got a trophy! Everyone else was getting mid spec, you must be doing well
Absolutely fantastic video.
Fantastic car.Great colour. 💯👍💯👍💯
At last, a good looking car that doesn't cost the Earth, could this be the best EV we're all wanting?
Every new EV that comes to the market is great news, good to see they are getting the price down for people, But it's not my cuppa, not a fan of all the sharp, angular styling and too many buttons and switches etc, but not bad for the masses, well done MG !
Thank you for your opinion. Signed The Masses.
@@pcr8918 Enjoy your new EV pal ... glad your onboard ... signing off.
Yep, looks a good car for sure Richard. Good video as always. Keep em coming.
Sunglasses holder, I can’t wait to try that out
Looks good! Do wish that aero wheel covers were simpler and at least tried to look aerodynamic! Good effort and will be worth a serious look…
Needs a stick on plate at the front to clean up the lines?
I was really taken with one of these for my wife until I read the warranty document, not much covered for 7 years with some items only covered for 3 months! Make sure you know what you are getting into, a huge shame as the car drives great.
It's remarkable value. OK, only 18 months ago you could have had a genuine VW ID3 for a similar price, in low-ish trim. Now, even the lowest trims and specs are more expensive, and this Trophy is the current top of the MG4 options, with a heat pump no less. Just imagine when these high demand prices start to fall. This will sell.
No heat pump on the UK Trophy (unless it was fitted by accident). The EU Luxury (Trophy equivalent) comes with a heat pump.
Can't wait for this to come to Australia next year.
Model 3 most efficient and easiest charging. Enyaq for the space. Mg for the value…
If you cancel a purchase, do you pay some sort of penalty or even lose your deposit?
I love it in that blue 🥰 I would think they could sell them very easily !
Yes its overly aggressive on the new MG ZS EV as well so we turned it off in the MG pilot menu
Richard.
Ask the owner how to turn off the beeps.
During the other review I saw it was beeping all the time.
There is apparently a de-bleeping option. Although I can't recall who or where it's from....
At the minute for me it's probably the one I'd go for, however I did nearly buy a Born V2 the other week 😆 just need to get a test drive now in it
Great video, thanks Richard.
Thanks for the review Richard
Great review. What’s your thoughts on no rear wiper? Still puts me off!
Would love a review of the new 59kWh LEAF. Bargain for the money
You didn’t mention the lack of a rear wiper. Do people think this is a non-issue?
Non issue with such poor rear visibility and a reversing camera.
I love the front and side profile of the car but not a fan of the rear end. Definitely an exciting EV to enter the market!
Really nice, and I love that blue 💙
I still don't consider £30K to be affordable but it's heading the right direction. Just hope the electric price increases don't tip the balance for EVs.
Don’t forget the base model is just under £26,000.
@@CastleKnight7 Which is exactly what I've ordered, albeit in Camden Grey metallic so I paid extra for the metallic paint 🙂
@@philpdl1615 I think you mean 7.5p kwh
We should wait and see the performance of the 77kw battery version and the 4 wheel drive one.
Blue is beautiful!
Don"t sterotype Spuddy, that"s racism...
@@Mike999701 In what way is an opinion on bonging sounds racism, care to explain...
no bongs
Very informative, thank you. Clicky turn signals are good for older people in denial about their hearing.
Great review, thanks.
The only item to add is it isn’t rated for any roof load. It’s one failure!
More car companies should make like this car it’s amazing and super cheap too 👍
I have been contemplating an MG for some months now and come the new year may be looking to change my current vehicle. I like the look of the MG4 but a couple of points that disappoint me about the car is it doesn't look to have a drop down rear seat arm rest and what appears to be the lack of a rear screen wiper is a serious mistake on a hatch back.
Many of hatch backs don't have rare wiper such as BMW X6, Mercedes GLC/GLE Coupe.
Turn the indicators down in the settings
