    Yes, spend the production costs on batteries, to make a long range cheap car, instead of luring customers with auxiliary gear that does nothing to improve the main objective; to drive.

    • @edwilko8819
      @edwilko8819 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      yep bin the electric seats and make the range and price better. nothing more annoying than waiting for the seats to move back enough to get in when your shorter partner has used the car and its raining and you jave to lean in switch on the ignition first.
      its why i changed my seats in my e46 2nd hand bmw to manual versions that were identical

    • @Tore_Lund
      @Tore_Lund ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@edwilko8819 Just your weight savings of manual seats is translatable into longer range. Car manufacturers are shooting themselves in the foot, not offering minimalist models because that means fewer batteries needed per vehicle as the vehicle gets lighter, so more cars off the line per year, also from an environmental perspective, a frugal EV needs less charging and as they can produce more of them the transition goes faster.

    • @Tore_Lund
      @Tore_Lund ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@_TrueDesire_ Cost of new EVs is a road block, both sales wise and production wise and weight is the #1 kWh eater in city traffic. Must admit, I've never bought a new car: Not only a money issue, but I don't drive that much. My current EV is 20 years old and it was cheap too and had down payed it's footprint when I got it! I don't like the fat C-pillars of new cars, they give lousy rear visibility. Likewise the very thick doors, they make the whole vehicle wider. and they (the cars) are significantly heavier than 20-30 years ago because of that, so it is not only the infotainment system I'm complaining about. A rule of thumb, to have an agile EV that has also has reasonable range, is that battery weight is at least 1/3 of curb weight., That means that weight savings needs to be designed into the rest of the car. We have million $ Lambos with hand crank windows for weight savings, like to see more of that thinking with EVs. It would be like how affordable Chinese neighborhood EVs are made today, but instead of small 12kWh battery, you put 30-40kWh in it and get 350 km range and it would be a significantly cheaper vehicle too, than even short range full size European and US EVs, This MG is converging on that kind of thinking.

    • @tonyedgecombe6631
      @tonyedgecombe6631 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The main objective isn't to drive. The car companies main objective is to make money. Given the chronic battery shortage they are doing exactly what is in their best interest.

    I think the most impressive part of the entry model is how it is the first car to truly be price competitive with ICE cars. It is cheaper than an entry level 1.5 Golf. It's not far off the price of a base Vauxhall Astra. You get far more base tech, all that without considering the electrification.

    Just got my Trophy model two days ago - it replaced a 2 year old Evoque. Obviously very different cars, but I'm loving the MG and don't feel short changed for 'trading down' 🙂 A really nice car to drive and it has all the gadgets I need. Pricing is amazing - The only place where I can see obvious cost savings is the rear seats. Plenty of room, but a bit mean on luxuries like an arm rest and courtesy lights. That's fine by me and a sensible trade off. Love it!

      Regarding the lack of light in the back - I was talking to someone the other day who has an MG5 and the same issue. On the MG5 there is a powered USB port on the rear view mirror area so he got some remote controlled LED lights that can be plugged into a USB, fastened them to the roof (MG5 has a sunroof which provided space) and ran them into the back of the car. He says it works great and was cheap and easy to do. Not sure if the MG4 has a similar USB port but it might be worth a look

      Why many EV manufacturers use a single EV motors and transfer the power through mechanical differential and half-shafts to the wheels is counterproductive to EV efficiency. Having four independent direct-drive motors in the wheel hubs is a far more efficient means of power distribution. And I doubt the weight of four individual motors vs a single motor and drive train is the deciding factor. I guess some habits are hard to break from.

    Nice design. Plenty of obviously great points as an EV, but one thing I liked about the rear hatch - it's a squared-off shape, which means this car will be useful for load-lugging more often than many realise. My wife used to drive a Citroën AX, which was a brilliantly efficient thing - she even carried an armchair in the back. Eventually swapped it for a Peugeot 206, a bigger car with a far more fiddly shaped hatch opening - no chance of getting anything as big in there.
    Well done, MG, this will sell loads!

      I agree. And I think that many Tesla owners and potential Tesla buyers will opt for cars like this once they realize how strong the specs are, how well made they are and how good they look. You save a ton of money and still get between 95% and 99% of the real benefits of going electric. The acceleration of a vehicle like the MG four is still far faster than a petrol car and it is a lot faster than most people will ever actually use. Accelerating faster than a car like the MG4 can accelerate is physically uncomfortable and it’s also highly dangerous.

      No longer the case, most of the British side of MG has gone. Now the elephant in the room - work out the cost of charging these things at typical motorway service station rates. Charging your vehicle often costs more than the equivalent miles in petrol - something you hear nothing about in the press.

      @@LondonSteveLee Hey, market them here to the United States then. Electric rates are low here so even using an expensive charger for my car doesn't even scratch the cost of gasoline.

      @@LondonSteveLee if paying more than 54p/kWh that is indeed the case- 5p per mile becomes about 15p per mile practically equivalent to Diesel economy . But subscription discounts from various charging network providers can help and a lot of new EVs come with a complementary charging card given discounted charging or in some cases free charging for a period of time! And there are still a number of free destination chargers around in the UK.

    Love your presenting style just plain facts and no messing about, my only concern is whether will it actually do over 200 miles, on a single charge, and as someone with no experience of these new electric cars are there enough charging stations nationwide,I know that tesla has been brilliant at this but what about everyone else.

    Hmm, interesting. Finally, a hatchback. I agree with Chris Till below. I also wonder: how's the build quality compared to the Teslas? But a MG3, Zoe sized electric car, preferably with hot hatch performance really would be my kind of thing. I do like the look, mostly from the front...
