2023 MG4: An all-electric family hatchback

  • MG's new EV is genuinely a match for mainstream models
    Since its resurgence a few years ago, MG has plied its trade with cars that are considerably cheaper than rivals from mainstream manufacturers, but that are also largely inferior in a variety of ways. It's also true to say that of all MG's models, it's the electric ones that have been the most compelling prospects, and the ones that have found the most dedicated following with buyers.
    The firm's latest effort - the MG4 - is an electric family hatchback rival to popular cars like the Volkswagen ID.3, so it has its work properly cut out in attracting new buyers to the MG brand. Two versions are offered, a Standard Range car with a 51kWh battery, a power output of 170 horsepower and an official WLTP range of 218 miles, and a Long Range car with a 64kWh cell, a 204-horsepower motor and a range of between 270 and 281 miles depending on which of the two trim levels - SE and Trophy - you select.
    In this CarGurus UK video review, Rebecca Jackson takes a detailed look at the new car's quality, technology, practicality, and of course, what it's like to drive, and explains why MG's latest offering is a proper step up for the brand, and why it's now a genuine contender for your money based on merit as well as budget.

    A fair review, you would expect the MG4 to have a less nice interior than an ID.3 when the base model costs £12,500 less than the base VW. I don’t know about anyone else, but I do not drive around fondling my dashboard, so the squishiness of the plastics is not crucial. I do however, pay attention to hope much I have to pay for my car, and the MG4 is a whole lot of BEV for the money. A 204hp rear wheel drive hatchback with good handling, decent range and plenty of standard kit. I’m getting a Trophy in the next couple of weeks and that gets even more toys than the SE, I’m looking forward to it

    • @bill_heywood

      @@adamtench4447 I love it. The best thing about the MG4, apart from its price, is the way it drives. Just pootling around town which is most of my driving is still fun because you have great 0-30 acceleration and that RWD handling so even a roundabout can be fun. It is also a practical family 5 door hatchback, so does the jobs I need it to do. I just did my first road trip to North Wales and on the roads through the mountain it was a fun, and overtaking is a breeze too. Range and efficiency were good too. The infotainment is probably its weakest area, but it works and the car gets so much else right, I can forgive it that. Overall, as my first EV experience, I’m a very happy owner

    It is built to a price point, but it does a commendable job all the same. If people truly want a great value in the EV market, this has to be on their list as must-drives. It doesn't carry forward the MG ethos (meaning MG-GTs of the sixties), and it's too bad they didn't make use of all that heritage in their designs, but this is still a worth-while car and I hope a lot of people buy them. Another great CG review!

      I’ve purchased one! I’ve not found anything to dislike about it! No oil leak, no noisy a/c, no drooping underbelly panels even the info screen is reacting fast! Fast enough, no squeaks or rattles, suspension is great better than the Atto 3 I drove! Loving it!

    For the price, there is absolutely nothing that can touch the MG4 SE variants. In fact I think the MG4 Trophys only competition is actually the MG4 SE long range. Who needs a roof spoiler that actually slows the car down and reduces range. What's the point in an electric drivers seat which hasn't got a memory function. Who needs heated seats and steering wheel in a car that I can pre-heat from the comfort of my living room. What's the point of wireless charging without wireless Android Auto. You don't need any more than SE spec.

    • @moragkerr9577
      @moragkerr9577 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And most of us don't need the LR battery either. £2,500 more for an extra 60-65 miles nominal? The SR battery is happy to be charged to 100% every time, none of this trying to stop it at 80% unless we have a "long-trip" in mind, it's said to be more durable than the LR battery, and it doesn't have any cobalt in it. No doubt there are some people who regularly drive more than 150 miles in a single day, but for those of us who only go on longer drives occasionally, what's the point?
      Gripes about the SE? (none about the SR battery though)
      - wing mirrors don't have electrical folding
      - the automatic door lock can't be disabled, which is a real pain, and feels claustrophobic
      - the USB music system doesn't support nested folders, which is insane, and means you have to do a lot of creative track renaming to get music to play in the right order
      Yes, there's also the usual stuff about LKA and so on, but that's not unique to the SE or even to the MG4. I actually suspect the second two gripes are software bugs rather than deliberate malice to punish those of us not prepared to shell out for heated leather seats, a satnav and a hideous-looking spoiler. And they probably don't realise some people's garages really need electrically folding mirrors in order to get the car in without ripping the things off.
      In terms of value for money, this thing is spectacular. I just wish reviewers would get the message that the A/C can be completely controlled by the steering wheel buttons. Saying that it can only be done through the touch-screen is really talking the car down. It would seriously worry me if that was true! But in fact it's the first car I've ever had where I can change the temperature and the fan speed without taking my eyes off the road at all.

    Furthermore, although the dynamic behaviour of the car is typical of a rear-wheel drive, it is not true that the front of the car is light, the MG4 has a 50/50 weight distribution.
    It's true that almost no reviewers read the manuals of the cars they drive, but they all make mistakes. If it's their job and they are paid to do it, they should do their homework and not give random data. Otherwise a literature professor could talk about Shakespeare without having read him, based on the films based on his works.

    I would assume all these test cars are fully prepped to not show the inherent issues that the MG4 has whilst being reviewed.
    Not one review mentions the oil leaks, the prospect of being locked inside the vehicle which has been subject to a recall, the poor quality interiors,and so on.
    One look online shows the MG4 has some major faults.
    Most of which are still apparent on cars still being delivered today.
    Whilst the reviews appear honest, sadly you only need to speak to current owners for a real review of ownership.
    I owned 2 of them last year and both were rejected within the first 30 days for multiple faults.
    I so wanted to love this car and believe the hype.
    It genuinely could have been a game changer, sadly now many other owners have also rejected theirs and now know better.

      Not sure this is the reviewers fault - EV's are seen as the way forward for governments to meet emissions targets so there's only going to be more EV's released until a better way of providing transport is available.. It's certainly the case that if you don't have access to home charging then an EV is a pretty costly option.

      How many cars do you think there are to each petrol pump? Way more than 30. Yes we need more public chargers, that’s why they are being rolled out a rate of knots, every petrol station I go to seems to have work going on to install them. The infrastructure will expand to cope with demand

      @@bill_heywood true, but refilling an ICE car takes a couple of minutes - recharging an EV much longer. Include the fact that public chargers are currently very expensive compared to home charging and you end up with a far worse payback period compared to a petrol or diesel .

      @Brian-om2hh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It isn't an issue for 75% of UK eV owners, as they charge at home 90% of the time. It is estimated there are around 400'000 privately owned home chargers. My Son was considering going EV for his next car and this base MG was around his price point. However, he isn't at all impressed by the quality, fit and finish or reports of reliability or poor customer service. Along with the range and 'refuelling' time constraints....he didn't fancy being stuck at a services with a 2 year old Daughter for any longer than possible and the interior space for his family was only just big enough. So he also priced up a Skoda Octavia SEL, 1.5 Turbo 150 which came in at around £2k more. It has vastly more space, really good quality, fit and finish, pretty much double the range, 5 minutes to refuel......you can see where I'm going. And the Skoda is where he's going.
