    An excellent layout with realistic ops sessions. Interesting how there’s a similarity of railroad terminology. I grew up and also worked on the Canadian National ..... long before the days of Hunter Harrison.... I have experienced situations similar to your Monument Meltdown .. post more videos please.

    Please post more videos to keep us "up to date"?
    This is a wonderful "N"scale layout and very inspirational for those of us who are not quite up to "Ops sessions" yet?
    I assume that you can just run trains over the layout, just for the sheer enjoyment of watching them travel through the scenery.. But To be able to operate like a "real" railroad is great?
    I often watch the videos ( and then run my "N" scale layout for a while)...
    our layout was built to run trains at shows or displays, so that something was always moving?.. I wish after watching the videos, that our layout had been better designed for the realistic operations like yours?
    Thank you for the very entertaining videos...

    Hmm so some dispatchers and a yard master came up with a dispatching scheme and they like it? What a surprise haha. In all seriousness though dispatching has gotta be hard Idk how many times as a conductor I was told, "Don't worry too much the dispatchers won't let anything bad happen as long as you stay in your limits." so man being the guy responsible for that must be heavy.

    I really like this video as I have a scenario that I would want to play out when it comes to this situation:
    GN train QRWG #442 (With Rio Grande, CB&Q and Western Pacific power) is running from Salt lake but has to terminate his train in Monument yard due to an Accident in Dayville which has caused traffic to get shifted to Monument. The train pulls in with 21 cars plus caboose. The train will be dismantled and handed out to the various industries along the line and there is an outbound train the power needs to continue the power on to Seattle. Some notable cars in this train include a flat bed carrying two trucks and two SP&S boxcars colored in green with yellow lettering that are loaded with Plywood. The train itself will be about 26 cars long with 6 cars from Big Monument Industrial park, 6 cars from the ON&E, 6 cars from both north and south 7th Avenue industrial area, the 3 hot cars I mentioned before and the rest of the train consists of GN related cargo bound for Seattle.
    Here's so Challenges that will be consisting of this operation:
    Get train QRWG now renumbered to #256 out of monument yard at 15:00 hours. (Do not delay)
    Big Monument Industrial park wants to add 2 50 foot Pacific Fruit Express Reefers (Lettering in black) to the train since the out bound SP train wouldn't be running through today so bring the cars to them.
    Malheur feeds would call up midway asking for a delivery of 2 NP 40 foot boxcars of Barley to them as part of a hot delivery.
    Keeping the three hot cars together along with the rest of the train to get them out.
    All trains bound for California would be showing up earlier than normal (Except for the SP trains)
    If this isn't much of a challenge then I don't know what is, seems plausible right. I hope you have the good rest of your day Dean.

    • @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125
      @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wow, interesting - the problem with that scenario is that while railroads typically have detour agreements set up with each other, I've never heard of one of those agreements extending to yard operations (not to mention that there's zero chance the NP would drop everything they normally do in their yard to prioritize GN work). Typically yard derailments happen at the turnouts (just like our models!) which block access to one end of the yard. This causes all classification activities and train arrivals and departures to be done through the non-derailment end. I lived this scenario many times on the prototype and it is intense - now that could make for an interesting video!

    • @josephida8390
      @josephida8390 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could imagine that this how the day would go down at the beginning as they encounter problems from the start:
      Dispatcher this is QWRG #442, we're just outside of Humboldt Junction our GN unit is completely dead and it won't start up, we don't have enough power to get to Snowline summit front or back and is there a spare unit you can lend to us so we can finish the journey there?
      Yes we got a Western Pacific GP9 that you can use in your consist along side the normal helper crew. I got word that Dayville yard got into a switching action derailing a few cars and damaging a couple and the clean up crew isn't going to be there for another couple of hours so we're leaving the yard empty until it's cleaned up and all traffic would be shifted to Monument yard until the yard is completely cleaned up and the damage has been inspected.
      Man dispatcher, George W. Thompson the Third wouldn't like the fact that he has to do double duty that he has both railroads to be handled.
      And I also got word that you will be terminating your train in Monument yard.
      What!
      Could be the start of the scenario that would explain a couple of things but this means Monument would have a possibility of melting down with the California trains arriving early at roughly 14:30 hours.

    ?So with your TT/TW Dispatching do trains still OS at Stations across the railroad?

    • @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125
      @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dean, the scheduled trains don't have much work on line other than station stops for passenger trains so their running times are very consistent. They OS their departure out of their initial station and then are not allowed to make up time. So they might report "#8 is out of GN Jct 20 minutes late" and then the dispatcher can relay that info to other trains getting track warrants (#8 is running 20 minutes late). No matter where #8 is on the layout he'll always be running at least 20 minutes late so other trains can adjust accordingly. If he falls significantly farther behind he could OS somewhere along the way, but I don't recall that ever happening.

    • @deandeis5951
      @deandeis5951 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125 First off, thanks for the response! I really like your TT/TW dispatching, as a frequent attendee of ops sessions, nothing is worse than getting assigned an extra train and getting stuck in a siding for hours on end. I love how your TT/TW scheme provides operators with the challenge of running via a timetable yet also prohibits the chance of trains sitting in sidings for hours on end.
      -Dean

    • @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125
      @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deandeis5951 thanks. The ratio of scheduled trains (that run on timetable schedules) to extra trains (that run on track warrants) is probably 1 to 3. It really makes a difference in layout fluidity - back when we did straight track warrants we'd get a big backlog of guys waiting their turn to get track warrants. We still get that at times, but it's much better.
