  • Using mirrors to create a larger-than-real model railroad or diorama. Several examples of scenes on several model railroads using mirrors to expand the apparent size.
    Take a look at several model railroads in several scales to see how mirrors can expand the appetent size and visual impact of the model. Used to expand mines and tunnels as well as highlight scenes. Also to expand the scope of the scenery, for example, a forest seen in a huge mirror making the forest huge expanded into the far distance!

    About you mentioned you like point-to-point layouts and you're making your layout an actual point-to-point with eyes and turntables, I always say to myself it's that individuals layout they can do what they like with it, me I like continuous run layouts, where the train runs in continuous loops, that's always been my favorite kind of layout

    Great video. John Allen was probably the first influential person to use mirrors and he offered numerous ideas on how to further hide the illusion.

    Great ideas. It reminded me of this cracker box of an apartment I rented in college. It was supposed to be a studio apartment at some point they put mirrors along one wall to the bathroom. It gave it depth that's for sure.

    Dale, there are 2 ways you can fix the crossing-turntable-intersection. Because mine-car wheels turn independently on the axles, you could follow prototype mine practice and run the car off the end of the track onto a steel plate, turn the car on the flanges of the wheels, then push the car onto the appropriate track. This was done in some industries that used track like in a mine to move material and parts. The transition is done by tapering the rails onto the plate, bring the plate up to slightly lift the car, or turn each rail toward the outside of the track creating a J shape. The turntable can have an appropriate mark or groove for the flanges at half the gauge so it shows up in the mirror. The turntable should be in a square plate to hold the table, approaches(you know). I have seen one or two turntables in mines of these mine explorers put up on TH-cam that have rail attached to the table; if you did that, you could use rails parallel and one crossing set at 45* so the 2 rails are against the mirror and it would be very difficult to see the mirror.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn’t sure what they did exactly. I have seen photos of “turntables” in mines. And single point kick switches. Odd and interesting.

    This will sound unlikely, but if you hang a short curtain in the door of the paint booth, from the ceiling to the height of the paint booth table, it will significantly improve the realism of the mirrored area.

    An alternate suggestion for the 'End of Yard' scene is to use a cloud backdrop and a 3 stall 'car barn', or freight terminal, where "the cars" would back into the building. Love the mine scene 🙂

    The details, always the details. Figuring out how to overcome the detail problems can either make you proud or pull what hair you might have out.
    I know you have a reason, but could you not drop the logging railroad down and connect it to the rest of the layout? I know the big mirror comes into play here, but a switch and another trestle would look super.
    Oh well, this is not my railroad, it is yours, do it all your way. ;-)

  • @kevinholland4156

    Dale, in mines, where they have an intersection and don't want to build a switch; they put down a heavy steel plate so they can turn the mine car on. It's called a slip sheet

    Hiya! Really nice seeing all these areas. And, a part of modelling is creating illusions with "smoke and mirrors", ...or the latter at least. I have seen people (not many though) create place names that are reversible: looking the same reflected or not.
    I'm itching to get active with videos and models again. Fighting Facebook to reclaim my account has been my main objective recently and I actually just got back from London where I called in to their HQ. No-one would come to help me!

    Dear Dale and Karyn, absolutely magnificent video! First of all for the remembrance you’ve put in, from the basements to Steve’s mine, all fitted with mirrors. Second, for all the different techniques and tricks you’ve shown on how to use mirrors. Love how you’ve explained the how to avoid the gap from the normal glass mirrors and the reverse lettering. Cool to see the mirrors on the spray booth, and for the logging railroad. The mine mirrors are absolutely astonishing. Curious for your next episodes, both on the trestle, the furthering of the logging railroad and the stub end of the yard next to the spray booth. Apart from the surgical first surface mirrors, some art stores also sell variants of a first surface mirror with plastic backing. Cheerio

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  ปีที่แล้ว

      I was nervous about using this optical glass mirror. But don made short work of cutting it. It’s much more durable than the plastic ones. Should be no need to clean it but if so it’s easy to get to and difficult to scratch.

    There is a type of "fake" greenery that you can put outside to use for privacy. You can adjust the size I think. It's a lattice with ivy or vines on it. You could get or (knowing you two) make something like that and hang it on the front of your paint booth. Just lift it off of the hooks when you want to paint and hang it back up when you are done painting.

    One question I want to move into my garage too with my G scale, what is the depth of that shelf and the spacing between the tracks? I want to get three tracks like you so any advice you can give would be great. Thank you for all these ideas.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  ปีที่แล้ว

      24”. And that’s narrow. That’s as narrow as I could make it. Plan on 8” per track. But the front track doesn’t need the full 8” as there is nothing to run into on the front edge. Yet you don’t want a derailed train to fall off. So 4” from the backdrop to the center on track one. 8” between the center of track one and two. 8” from the center of track two to the center of track three and 4” from the center of track three to the edge.
