    I believe Kharn said it best:
    "The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We've all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we've all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher's Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn't behave that way. Only a dog does. That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

    "Humanity has always had killers, for humanity has always needed killers. We have for our sins always seem to had a war, where the violent of our society have seem to always found their place.Where those who have tendencies or imbalances that set them so apart from the rest of our species, made a home in vocation and blood soaked battlefields. We have forever tried to deny the simple truth of our own nature, and pretend in our grand delusion that we long ago conquered these spiritual demons of our own worst inclinations. And yet with the advent of a new era the specter of war inevitably returns and mankind once again returns to those we label as wrong as recidivist as broken pitiful things to do the bloody work that no one else can do as well as they."
    True even in this day and age.

    While I get the Emperor not wanting to lose one of his precious sons in a slave revolt on a backwater planet, I think I have a better solution than what he did. Instead of MAKING Angron come, by porting him out of there, the God-Emperor could have earned his son's undying love and loyalty by simply standing WITH him. Imagine the glory of the Emperor following Angron into battle as their first bonding moment.

      The Emperor makes a lot of questionable decisions when it comes to the Primarchs, indeed he makes a lot of questionable decisions full stop. The abduction of Angron, his dealing with Lorgar, his apparently ignoring the obvious problems with the Night Lords, the Council of Nikea all spring to mind

      You cannot easily say the emperor should have done this. The emperor is the culmination of the physic power of several shamans almost a gestalt individual. Whose sole purpose is to elevate humanity to greatness. No one knows how such an individual who lived countless thousand years thinks or feels. He never showed love or affection really and that is what his sons desperately needed. Not to mention true fatherly guidance

    I believe Angron is one of the most relatable characters in Warhammer, and has more depth than would be believed if people take a minute to gaze past his ever present rage boner and sky high levels of anger.
    He was the only primarch to not conquer or reign his adoptive world. The only primarch to be enslaved and wounded in a way none of the others were, and he felt pain that no one could endure every second of his waking life. A creation meant to conquer tyrants and instill peace and prosperity, became bitter and full of rage when he was denied the ability to fulfill that purpose by those who gave him the Butcher's Nails.
    Angron had the last source of redemption and happiness in his life stolen from him, when the Emperor teleported the primarch away from his comrades at the last minute. He hated his father at that moment and ever onward, and soon came to hate his brothers when he heard of how they all achieved their purposes with gusto.
    Angron hates himself. He hates his legion. He hates the Emperor. He hates everything. And from that hate, blood will flow in rivers as skulls rise up from the red tide to form monuments of rage.

    • @worldeater2414
      @worldeater2414 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      the only guy who could possibly come close to understanding him is Conrad, and that's only because he grew up a feral cannibal vigilante in a hive city. had the emperor at least GONE BACK TO NUCERIA AND FOUND OUT HOW THE GODDAMN NAILS WORKED and told Kurze "you're not crazy son, you're psychic".... a lot of messes would not have been made.
      Angron was not educated like the other primarchs, the emperor didn't even try once he saw the Cruciamen implant in his head. just chucked him on the conqueror and went "fucked if i know, y'all deal with him". very fatherly. you can't expect much love and loyalty from that root, it's as if Emperor knew what would happen and didn't give a shit.

      @@bladestormviking In Master of Mankind The Emperor took Angron back to Terra to see if the Nails could be removed, he talked to Arkan Land about the possibility but they discovered the Nails had replaced much of Angrons brain and couldnt be removed without killing him.
      The Emperor messed up by not sending the Custodes or the Warhounds down to Nuceria to reinforce Angrons men instead of teleporting him out and leaving them to die.

      Steve Palpatine you’d think that the Emperor could use his “definitely not godlike powers” to fix Angron. He seems to be able to will matter into existence which is both complex and precise (fixing a knights armor that was suffering severe mechanical failure on Mars). It’s obviously something that cannot be fixed purely because Angron has to be angry or else he might not fall to Chaos so easily and be the perfect champion of Khorne. So it’s like, inverted plot armor?

    Hell, if the Emperor had gone all Bronze Age, thrown off his shirt, and fought at his son's side, Angeron might have become the most loyal of all the Primarchs.

      @@paimonpress6760 maybe. I’m not one of those “the Emperor always planned for the Primarchs to revolt” people. Malchador claimed that they were always supposed to kill each other off but considering the damage done to the Imprium I think it was supposed to happen far from Terra, if he wasn’t just lying.
      The simplest explanation is Big E screwed up. He does a lot of justifying his decisions in retrospect. He spends so much time looking at the future he forgets that he does in fact have a present he needs to navigate somehow.

      Y'know what I noticed.... nobody ever panics when things go according to plan.
      Even if the plan is horrifying!
      Like, if I told the Imperium that, tomorrow, like, a few Lictors would be stomped flat by a VIIth Legion Heavy Intercessor, or a ridiculous rocketing moon full of GreenSkins would be blasted to _excrementum absolutum_ by a Battle Barge's broadside canon array, nobody panics... cause it's all _part of the plan._ But when I say that one embittered Primarch will fall to Chaos, betray the entire Imperium and even *The EMPEROR* himself...
      Well, then, everyone loses their minds!!

    • @OljeiKhan
      @OljeiKhan ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It might be that he could foresee the heresy and had to choose wich legion would fall to Khorne. If the choice was between loyalty of Sanguinius where Angron turns traitor or the loyalty of Angron where Sanguinius falls traitor , it's fairly easy to see why he acted the way he did.
      This is the explanation i come to by the linking of plotpoints however i am not pleased one bit by it.
      I do not think he HAD to force Angron and his legion into that downward spiral.

      Just found this channel and you are very right. Each Legion has such great history - so much depth to be explored - and yet that potential is often subordinate to the surface narratives of, in this case, a bunch of totally mindless "bad guys" in polar opposition to their true and good adversaries, often the "good and pure" Astartes of the Ultramarines. Heck, the Ultramarines are an awesome, nuanced and at times flawed bunch, but those dimensions are rarely brought to the surface in official material. Captain Titus was awesome in his intelligent analysis of the Codex Astartes and Graham McNeil's compelling portrayal of Uriel Ventris and Pasanius - especially in "Dead Sky, Black Sun" - was very well done. Still, other Legions/Chapters besides the Angels and the Wolves need a little more love. Especially the Iron Hands.

    You do my legion more then a justice. You give it high honours!
    Your summary of the legion in the first few seconds is more accurate then ever, and speaks volumes about how we even in real life treat and think of our military.
    The lore is accurate, yet feels like it is spoken by a scribe on Holy Terra itself in the vaults; and for that... You give a enriching experience.
    You don't cover everything, but cover enough to convey what exactly the legion is or was.... A legion of those who were thought up of as dogs, as simple minded automatons who kill on command. Like the Terminator, or something similar. No. They were more and less.
    Saying that the Blood Angels is the World Eaters mirror is accurate, for not only does it nail it on the head.. It basically just decapitates it. A Legion, who broke their chains, only for them to be put back on by Khorne....
    Thank you for your hard work, and service to making my legion better know.
    Bellum omnium contra omnes!

      It's certainly debateable, the role that nature and nuture played with the primarchs. Certainly, it cannot be ignored that many found very suitable homeworlds to inculcate certain aspects of their selves. Magnus found a world of scholars, for example. Whether this was some grand scheme on the part of one power or other, however, is up in the air.

  • @spacewolfblackmane19
    @spacewolfblackmane19 6 ปีที่แล้ว +88

    Angron always gets shit on for being a slave and never conquering his home planet but really could any of the other primarchs have done better, when quite literally right out of the pod he gets attacked by some 10, 20 or more eldar prepared to kill him. Is massively weakened, to the point if being unable to fight. Gets one of the most unnessary prices of dark age level tech hammer and fused to his brain pretty much bleaching any and all pleasure, and emotional development out side of battle, and killing. And ONLY having an army of unstable gladiators with no option of recruitment save the odd freeing of untrained slaves. And then being surrounded by 7 or more full armies with far superior weapons, tech, and training. And THEN getting teleported away by your asshole father who by the way could have easily roffil stomped all that with I don't know THE ENTIRE LEGION OF ASTARTIES THAT CAME WITH HIM TO GET ANGRON.
    I'm sorry by that part always fucks with me. The Emperior is an asshole.

    • @KahlGeier

      Simply look at Curze who had to grow up all by himself in goddamn Nostramo or Lion El Jonson who survived in the forests of Caliban while fighting with actual demons. Never forget that Angron was a primarch, no mere mortal, there surely was a way he could free himself, he simply failed. He also ruined the Warhounds completly and turned them from a blunt but effective fighting force into a bunch of bloodlusting lunatics. Don't get me wrong, i really like Angron and his Legion but you can't blame Big E on his failings. I guess he wanted Angron to see where his style of doing things will eventually lead.. or you're utterly right and Emps was just a big asshole.

    • @spacewolfblackmane19
      @spacewolfblackmane19 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ivan Red ture you are right Curse did grow up alone on Nostromo and look what it did to both him and his legion, drove him haft mad and polluted his sons with the picopathic at best trash that the nobility scooped up and gave him. He pulled through terror and it would have never lasted, if he had the Nails implanted into his skull don't doubt that he wouldn't just try to rip them out killing himself in the process.
      The Lion it is hard to say how having a device that literally scrambles your mind every second of everyday with aching pain, until you eventually snap and kill something then it dumps LOADS of adrenalin and other pleasure inducing drugs straight into the mind. All the while preventing your superhuman healing from taking place as it digs ever further into the brain doing even more damage to the point where it threatened to kill even him. The Lion was always sketch as fuck to me.
      But even knowing thus the Emperor still gave this unstable as mother fucker a legion even after deeming him possible untreatable. But instead chose to just try to get as much use of him as he could and discard him later, ya sounds very assholeish to me

    • @KahlGeier
      @KahlGeier 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I completely agree with you that the butchers nails were the main factor that drove Angron into damnation, but he still decided to force his Legion to follow him there. That's why i actually prefer Curze, he knew Nostramo was corrupting the 8th from within and he somehow tried to correct it, of course in his own twisted way, until he realized there was nothing left so save. Curze's ultimate goal was justice and the only method he ever had the chance to learn was through fear and terror. It wasn't the Emperor that placed him on Nostramo, neither was it the Emperor that made Angron fight in a colosseum or drove the nails into his head. Of course he could have spent more time with both of them, helping them with their individual flaws but in the end he had way greater things to focus on. Let us also not forget that they are primarchs, they should have seen the error in their ways and if you look at Conrad, he actually did. That's why he asked Sanguinius to kill him and eventually let the assassin do so. He tried to kill the Night Haunter and save what was left of Konrad Curze, while justifying everything he'd ever done. Angron, at least in my opinion, never even tried to correct or even justify his way of doing things. Yes the butchers nails impaired Angrons reasoning but it wasn't fully gone. He could see the truth in Lorgars words as he warned him of the consequences of his actions during the shadow crusade but he still decided against it.
      Also, the Emperor wasn't their father, he was their master. I guess it hurt many of them but if fucking Guilliman can figure it out there is simply no excuse that the others didn't. I think it was even Guilliman that stated something like: "the Emperor cannot love a single soul, cause he loves humanity as a whole" I know the quotation isn't quiet right but i guess you can see what he meant by that.
      (sorry if i made any mistakes, english isn't my native language)

      It's fine my auto correct isn't making speech any more easier for me anyways.
      Master, father, or what ever he may call himself The Emperior was a massive fool for using and then not censoring a broken tool. Curze for all his folly could still see reason the majority of the time when not about matters of justice. Angron is a broken tool that knows no other way, was not thought any other way except charge enemy kill enemy, and the nails allow me and my mortal warriors to do so even better why not use such device to make my legion do just that but even better.
      The Emperor knew this and yet did nothing, and only at the VERY last minuet did he send what might have possibly been the exact wrong legion to send, i mean i love the space wolves Leman Russ is my favorite loyalist primarch but his message and the way he delivered it never would have reached him. Remember aside from very rare moments of slightly less throbbing pain in his head could, or would he think clearly enough to make designations more complicated than find enemy, kill enemy. And in truth as his MASTER the emperor needed complete obedience and aside from telling Angron go over there and attack every man, woman, child, plant, fungi, bacteria, animal, and maybe just maybe mineral and metal that they can find. Angron did not do very much listing and instead of getting on that shit until he either found a way to fix his broken tool the least he could have done is have him taken out back and die of some "unforeseen" medical complications.

    What a tragic story for a tragic Legion and Primarch. They are my favorite traitor legion, not for what they are necessarily but for what they could have been. The are the biggest waste of potential and it could have all been avoided if the emperor had just gave a shit. I blame what happened to the world eaters and Angron entirely on the emperor.

    FIrst of all... Absolutely love your videos man!!! You bring such an interesting perspective to the lore that I can't find anywhere else on youtube. Just for my own satisfaction, the crusade-era world eaters shouldn't have been wearing the aquilla on their armor and they definitely shouldn't have chaplains wielding a crozius like in that first image right?

    • @Sliceofpi
      @Sliceofpi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Alexander Romer you are confusing the Imperial Aquila with the emperor's raptor and lightning bolts. As Chaplains were created by Malcador the Imperial office is represented much as the Mechanicums cog is on tech marines. Or artists are too busy drawing to read...

    • @OculusImperia
      @OculusImperia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I honestly can't tell if the chaplain is wearing a Palatine Aquila (the Emperor's sigil) or the raptor and lightning bolt emblem common of Unification Wars veterans, but my choice of the image was simply down to it being 1) hella cool 2) Crusade-era and 3) serving the purpose of the opening splash. But, excellently spotted!

    Honestly the World Eaters are among my least favorite legions for they are not as refined as the rest; they are crazed butchers than warriors. Still I wonder what it'd be like if the Emperor chose to help Angron, save all his comrades and make them be part of the legion instead and then remove the Butcher's Nails? Surely the Emperor knows about how awful and corrupting it is despite it's benefits.

    Very good, but it's a shame you didn't tell anything about Nuceria being already compliant world and about Angron killing one or two Custodes, before Emperor teleported him. I think those are key pieces of Angron's story.

  • @richmcgee434
    @richmcgee434 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Never made any sense to me the Big E didn't just tell the Nucerian armies to back the hell off and let him take Spartac...ah, Angron's gladiator army offworld instead of kidnapping him by teleporter and earning a permanent grudge from the cranky twit. He certainly wasn't there alone, and even without a fleet backing him up nothing the Nucerians could have done would have even briefly held out against his own psychic powers. Heck, he and his bodyguards could have just fought alongside Angron and butchered the enemy armies face to face, which would have earned him trust and loyalty from both the primarch and his allies. Not one of the Big E's better choices.

    The Emperor not just crushing the opposition facing Angron under the weight of Legio Custodes and instead saving _only_ Angron and leaving his rebel band to die is something I never understood, and still refuse to believe would have been his actual decision.

    Gotta say, that was a HUGE dick move by the Emperor, in taking Angron from the only Family he ever had. And on top of it, perhaps worse was his disregard for what would happen to his "Son's" ( can't call him 'your Son' when you are a deadbeat ) Comrades in arms. Surely the golden dickhead could have intervened, and even took Angron's Companions with them. And people wonder why I favor Chaos, specifically Nurgle. I know for a fact that Nurgle will always help his children.

[...] "The people of your world named you Great One. The people of mine called me Slave. Which one of us landed on a paradise of civilization to be raised by a foster father, Roboute? Which one of us was given armies to lead after training in the halls of the Macraggian high-riders? Which one of us inherited a strong, cultured kingdom? And which one of us had to rise up against a kingdom with nothing but a horde of starving slaves? Which one of us was a child enslaved on a world of monsters, with his brain cut up by carving knives? Listen to your blue-clad wretches yelling of courage and honour, courage and honour, courage and honour. Do you even know the meaning of those words? Courage is fighting the kingdom which enslaves you, no matter that their armies outnumber yours by ten-thousand to one. You know nothing of courage. Honour is resisting a tyrant when all others suckle and grow fat on the hypocrisy he feeds them. You know nothing of honour."

    Angron's history here seems to be quite out of date, especially when it comes to the timing of Angron's implantation with the Butcher's Nails.
    According to what I gathered from second-hand sources, the current lore is that he was not implanted with the Nails until several years into his "career" as a gladiator, specifically right before pitting him before his foster father (who is not even alluded to in this record).
