The heretic and the mutant atleast to a historian their purging can serve as an example and warning to those that comes in the times after their fall, the same for the foulest servants of the ruinous powers. The Xenos lack even that reedeming quality slight and irrelevant as it may be in the eyes of the Imperium.
The heretic can be seen as fallen kin, puttied and leaned from. A heretic's fall can be used to instruct the faithful. The mutant is likewise pitiable, and many can even serve after a fashion, or seek to cleanse their souls through the purgation of their bodies. The alien, though, is no kin to humanity. I was thinking the same thing. The whole war may have been a humiliating fiasco for the Imperium especially if it cost them one or two of their primarchs.
The Imperial Fists also received reinforcements, which suggests _at least_ a legion's worth distributed between the two. _The chamber at the end of memory_ reveals that whatever the lost were erased for threatened the heart of the Great crusade and was so horrible that Dorn and Guilliman had their memories sealed. Given that this was during preparations for the siege of Terra, we can safely rule out that it was for turning against the Imperium or dying. It's also known that they were erased for separate events. As an aside, the revelation that Malcador can manipulate the memories of Primarchs makes whatever he revealed to Dorn suspect. My money's on discovering some horrible secret about Big E (e.g. he's a agent of chaos after his trip through the Molech portal) or stumbling upon some faction that directly refuted his vision.
I think it may very well be a far more likely explanation for the fate of one of them, but not both. Everyone always wants to explain both away with a single event even though it has been repeatedly reiterated that they were separate tragedies, not a single connected event. Also-- one or the other seems to have been purged for excessive mutation given the fervor by which all of the other legions hid their mutations from the Emperor. I don't really see how that would tie into this. And of the two explanations you provided there, the being turned on the Empire and fighting for the enemy seems the one far more likely one that would have resulted in all records of them being purged. First of all, in either case, the entire legion would never be affected because there would always be some members of the legion back on their home world or on various patrols or errands around the galaxy. So if the majority of the legion died in battle protecting the empire, they would have been heralded as heroes and any remainder of the legion would be charged with carrying its colors and keeping the memory alive. The Emperor's Children was retained as a legion despite similarly having barely any members left and suffering the purge of 90% of the legion. However, if the primarch and most of the legion had been turned by the enemy and fought against the Emperor, then that is something the Emperor would definitely want erased from the records. Any remaining members of the Legion who they could be certain were not under the influence of the Ragdan likely would have been merely reassigned to a different legion. And if it was out-and-out mind control, it would be understandable why none of the other Primarchs held a grudge against their brother for having been turned on them.
Another possibility is if one of the lost legions became heavily infected by a species such as The Thing, the emperor would have certainly ordered it purged before the infection could spread.

I find the idea of the Emperor being desperate enough to unleash a C'tan compelling due to how terrible the situation would have been, the Godzilla Threshold trope on galactic scale. It would also explain why the event wasn't widely recorded, the Imperium won't tolerate the idea that such a thing was necessary to establish it becoming common.
Historitor Oculus, I have something that I believe warrants your qualified attention. In my studies on the foul xenos that predated blessed mankind I came across your own study on the Blackstone Fortresses and the interview of Inquisitor Horst by Techpriest Alagos of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Hearing your findings on the "Dragon of Mars" made me revisit this archived footage, and I believe it may have revealed potentially terrible answers: could this "dragon of mars", this thing stowed away in the Noctis Labyrinthus be none other than the "Void Dragon" the inquisitor spoke of? These are the only two prominent mentions of a "dragon" I could find that exist outside of base myth and superstition and whilst one cannot discount such things as coincidences and the reliability of the sources examined, there is a gnawing in my mind that tells me there is something more. Whilst I fear the ramifications of such a line of questioning, I find myself inspired by your own bravery in the pursuit of truth and the correlation striking enough to bring this to your attention. If there is any shred of veracity to my suspicions, then you must understand why I send this to you on vellum rather than a pre-recorded message attatched to a servo-skull. Praise be the the Emperor of Mankind and may he watch over you. Yours in faith, Acolyte Lysander
The “incomplete” aspect of the Warhammer lore is one of its strongest and most fascinating aspects. This video leans into that heavily and I for one love it!
I think the 2nd legion were wiped out fighting the rangdan. My theory is that they initially discovered them and bore the full brunt of the attack until the DA and SW stepped in.
to imagine the Emperor's Angels and the Titans of Mars Being committed in such a number Yet still struggling to contain the Xenos, such a Horror rarely blighted our blessed Imperium,
I'd love the Black Library to cover a lot of things outside of just the Horus Heresy and the 40K era. I'd love stories that detail the Rangdan Xenocides (or one of them) but also really old stuff like the Cybernetic Revolt, the First Contact Wars and stuff like that. There's so much potential for story telling during these kinds of conflicts, I'd love it if we got to explore them in more detail someday. Will probably never happen, but a man can dream.
A dark angels story with no fallen stuff just massive battles by space knights and space Vikings against something worthy of a horror film would be epic
I would LOVE to see what happened after Emperor released Void Dragon. Maybe he was riding it through the void of space to fight against filthy Xeno menace creating the most glorious and manly sight in history of the entire Galaxy. Maybe the pure awesomeness of that event was too much for mortals to comperhend and Big E had to wipe their memories just so they wouldn't call him a God.
Such a record purge is likely related to the two Lost Legions that are never spoken of. Perhaps fallen in some horrible way to the Rangdan menace. The Emperor's executioners would of course be sent to put down some of their own.
New theory the worm things took over 2nd legion and turned on the 11th during xenocide and as a result the 2nd and 11th were utterly destroyed by the imperium as a result of not knowing who truely who is friend or foe ... lost and the damned
I love that 40k has 'incomplete' lore, but part of me would love to see a version of the rangdan... Some kind of army of corrupted elements of other races, tied to the will of a rangdan master. There are similarities with slaught, enslavers, the hrud, and Tyranids scattered throughout the lore of the rangdan, and the fact that attrition was so high and 2 whole legions and primarchs were probably lost to them makes me think they were a combination of the thing and invasion of the body snatchers. Mutative, corrupting, and controlling, able to turn biology and technology against their opponents and absorb them into the rangdan for future conquest. References to '-vores' conjure images of organic creatures able to feast on bones, brains, or even, and perhaps most tellingly, technology, and amalgamate that technology directly into their form. Maybe some escaped the xenocides...
Again another beautiful example of world-building or at least world explaining in such a way that makes you feel that you're listening to someone who is actually in the universe they are describing your work is amazing
As a member Ordo Xenos this conflict has made me wonder what really happened. What we do know is that both the Dark Angels lost nearly fifty thousand Space Marines in the conflict, and the Imperial Army had create a new combat documentaries after this war. This genocide was so vast that perhaps the two lost legions were destroyed in this conflict, and God Emperor knows how worlds were lost and Imperial Army units destroyed by it, one would hope that this event would be record for future analysis, but there almost nothing from this event.
The Thing movies are actually a part of the 40K universe... isn't that a fun bit of headcanon? A single Rangda finds its way to earth long before the rise of the Imperium. It only takes one to be an existential threat to the entire human race.
I believe it took more than three Legions to take out the Rangdan. On Ullanor there was a discussion between Magnus and if I remember right Mortarion about the last time nine Legions gathered together in one place. Mortarion said that they weren't allowed to talk about it because the Emperor said they couldn't. Which to me would imply that one or both the lost Primarchs died fighting the Rangdan. Since they are basically the only things the Emperor told the Primarchs they can't talk about. He erased them from history and the Rangdan, coincidence?
The thought occurs, the Imperium has at least two people still alive (... sort of in one case) who may have been witness to these Xenocides. Why not just ASK the Lord Regent or better yet since he likely participated in them directly, Bjorn the Fell-Handed? Also yes, it was probably Cypher who left that note for you.
18:08, while the larger topic of the Rangdan and Oculus' reaction is notable, I can't help but compare his comments on the Noctis Labyrinth here to the one of the Ordo Sinister. When speaking of the Psi-Titans, Oculus is terrified and despairing in a way not seen since his Primarch-granted delving into tomes on the nature of Chaos. Of the Dragon of Mars, he is much more lightly frustrated and musing as he often is when exploring the less detailed side of the lore. And within the Necron analysis including the C'tan, the normal disgust and even fear returned. *But the Void Dragon is never mentioned*. Yes, it's likley being saved for its own video. Mag'ladroth is a being vital to not just the Mechicum or the Imperium, but humanity itself. The contradiction to a scholar of the 42nd Millennium, the highs and lows of what it means to owe everything to an alien god beaten and forced asleep by the god of humanity, is something I think we're all anxious to see. Whichever Tech-Priest passed that detail of the Noctis Labyrinth along certainly is. Also, I find the occasional reference by Oculus to classical literature, from Faust to greek epics, very heartwarming. That myths two and a half thousand years old in our day, meant to entertain and educate, survived into the 41st millennium in recognizable form makes me wonder if more 'present' records still persist. If he could potentially point to the ancient greco-roman and gothic cultural and architectural styles persisting since the days of the Great Crusade. If he could see the political origins of the Imperium's policies. But perhaps the latter is for the best it remains buried. If the Mechanicus cannot see the difference between the open science of the pre-Chaos galaxy vs the one they live in now, then asking an Imperial scholar to comment on modern politics is to ask for a foregone conclusion nobody will be happy with.
Knowing how the Emperor unleashed and subsequently releashed the Dragon would be interesting to know. In the HH era the Dragon lacked a consciousness and was pure potential locked deep beneath the labyrinth. Releasing it in it's physical form would have required a Necrodermis, which is a secret only known to the Necrons. Maybe he didn't release the Dragon itself, but deviced some sort of weapon from it's energies or utilised it's knowledge.
The number of topics in this record that themselves would draw the attention of the Inquisition... A bold decision, sir. I'd been craving knowledge on this topic. Excellent video.
Could part of the reason there are not many records on the Rangdan Xenocides is because in these campaigns the "lost" primarchs/legion partook in these and failed in such a way that led to them being "lost" and to discuss these campaigns one must discuss the the lost. The Emperor does not accept failure. See oculus record on the lost primarchs.
Great Video. The Rangda being a bacteria makes sense. Supposedly, the Rangdan Xenocide was where Russ may have been ordered to kill the Primarchs of the 2nd and 11th Legions. If they were infected and made Rangda, it makes sense why they were stricken from the records.
In my head Canon, the rangda had found one of the lost primarchs and used it's dna/biomass to create monstrosities. Thus why the emperor seemed so willing to bring out the super secret C'tan guns in the form of a transcendent void dragon shard, and it's ridiculously thorough redactions. I think he wanted to rescue the primarch at first but after seeing what they did to it he realized he has to utterly obliterate everything including the records. There really aren't any great crusade era incidents that had astartes losses like the xenocides.
Wonder if he's going to bring up that one issue of the Imperial Guardsmen's handbook that accidentally had some reports from the Rangdan Xenocide printed on it referring to the II and XI legions
... How terrifying would have been if they Tyranids had absorbed this species, Thank the Man-Emperor it was destroyed. Gloriam Excelsus Terra. Hydra Dominatus.
In this particular cases, I can totally see it working other way round or very least - becoming some hybrid, never fully subdueing the nature of Tyranids, but taking some measure of control on bioforms and Hive Fleet or two.
The Dragons name has been wispered more and more. I fear that his head will rise and cause destruction in the darkened times of the Imperium before the dawn rises upon victory.
Such is for the best. In the past, Humanity scarcely considered History as important, even the two princes of Historians, Taishi-gong and Herodotus, held mythology, legends and esoterics in high regards, unlike modern historians.
It sounds like it would have behooved historitors and remembrancers past to record the Randa as I suspect therein might have laid information useful in combatting the tyranids.
It... doesn't. There's an odd reference to the II and XI in a Regimental Standard post about the Xenocides, but beyond that, that's kinda it. It's rumoured Space Marine Legions went to their destruction during it, and perhaps one of the reason GW won't elaborate on the Xenocides is that they're a reasonable way for and II and XI to vanish, without ever having to reveal their true fates.
Given the similarity in names and 40ks penchant for referencing other sci fi and fantasy stories I think the Rangdan are a reference to the Hrangan from George RR Martin's thousand world series. Like the Rangdan we never see them directly either but their presence as humanities long past enemy is still felt. Like the Rangdan they were said to have client races who acted as soldiers and slaves. Interestingly it was said that the Hrangans most potent ability was to turn their enemies against each other through psychic influence. This has some interesting implications for the 40k world if you think the similarities cross over.
Having enjoyed hours and hours of your inspired work. I really like what you did with this one. I really do. I think it’s really well thought out. Thank you so much.
Ohh, now not only will you have to beware the Inquisition bypassing Robot Gorrillaman, but you got the cog-boys looking to make you a servitor for asking questions. Good on ya mate, lovely vid as always.
The Rangdan xenocides are so heavily censored because the Rangdan sector is where the Weeping Angels came from. .. That would be a brutal crossover. One of the few things from sci fi that would actually be able to beat the 40k universe.
Whatever horror would convince the Emperor to unleash an ascended shard or heaven forbid a completed Void Dragon against an enemy when even the Necrons are horrified at such a prospect is a truly terrifying one.
@@FLMKane No, as-in the Rangda were literally furries. In one of the only actual canon descriptions of one described it as terrifying, vulpine(fox-like), and similar in size to a fully armored space marine and thrice as strong. So, yeah, literally furries.
And so the Occulus draws ever closer to a realisation that none outside the upper mechanicus and him upon the throne have ever known. That within a red star, within a black maze lies the last great C’tan, that which devoured the stars and doomed those ancient crafters of genes. The Void Dragon lies their, and soon the Occolus will realise it.
You do such a great job sounding contemptuous about fictional aliens that I would hate to be on the other end of a conversation where you actually we're contemptuous.
This will make excellent educational material for my class of Ministorum acolytes on the importance of good record-keeping. Who knows what secrets their foul biology might have held that could have given us the edge over the Great Devourer? Perhaps it might not be such a stretch to conclude that the Devourer itself may have started as a similar life form. Alas. 'Tis not for me to decide, and perhaps humanity is the better for it.
Oculus, thank you for movie. Great, mysterious, intriguing presentation of the material! Bravo! This is a very interesting part of the story of WH30K / 40K. I studied all the available material on the topic and I would like to write about my findings. about Rangda. Note such features: 1) Technological superiority over imperium 2) Not a single mention in the sources of necrons or eldar 3) Paranoidal destruction of all information about these "Aliens" 4) Mention as the "only threat" to the "Imperium" .... Not to "Humanity" ;) 5) Explicit specialization of slaughts for working with humans 6) Information about of "alien wars" of DAoT's people in this sector of galaxy. Clearly successful. Otherwise there would be no people in it. about Lost primarchs: Neither the complete destruction of the legion in battle, nor the genetic decay are sufficient reasons for total oblivion. It just shows what a great enemy was defeated by the Emperor!
The winner forgets only that which shows his weakness. Which threat can be repeated. I see only two possible reasons: 1 ) Primarchs voluntarily, being in “their mind and control”, accepted the ideas of the enemy and went over to his side. 2) Legions suffered huge losses in battle. The primarchs scared and led the troops out of their positions. But all this is possible only if, on the other side, not viruses and demons fight, but Humans, with sane morality and goals. Such ideas that are able to kill the Imperium and take its place. Then it makes sense in such a paranoid derogation of all available information. From which the conclusion suggests itself that Rangda was a surviving fragment of the people of the Dark era of technology. The composition of which were fused once defeated xenos. Maybe even under the control of artificial intelligence. Such a composition is an absolute nightmare for the Emperor and his "Creed". Here he can sell his soul to C'tan for the sake of victory.
Your ability to tease possible future subjects is masterful. An exam of the dragon of mars would require u to perform at your highest standard. Therefore I eagerly encourage such an endeavor. The teasing of possible future subjects from THAT post would be delicious.

Emperor: “Listen, you don’t like me and I sure as hell don’t like you. But if we don’t kill those THINGS there won’t be a galaxy to rule.” Void Dragon: *Begrudging roar of agreement*
I always kind of wondered if it was just a VERY early tyranid give fleet. There are a lot of parallels. And I've seen references to the possibility the slaugth may be tyranid related somewhere a long time ago
If anything in the galaxy could seek and destroy specific individual cells on a planetary scale, it would almost certainly be some forgotten horror in the Void Dragon's arsenal.

Is this conflict not also where we last hear of the enigmatic II and XI Legiones Astartes before their subsequent expungement from Imperial records?
Yes. However Oculus is in character when he delivers these videos, so most likely he did not mention them for a reason.
@@stormxlr2377 He's done stuff in character before about the Lost Legions and possible connections to the Rangdan Xenocides so I'm surprised he didn't at least make a reference.
Not quite. _The last Council_ reveals that the first of them wasn't erased until after Alpharius had been recovered. Also, pre-hersey Horus was royally pissed about Malcador destroying his brother's statue. Alpharius and Jaghatai weren't particularly amused either.
That awkward moment when the Emperor had to wake the Necrons to beat "the Thing"...

Plus probably a visit by at least 12 Alpharius's at once
Yours in faith,
Acolyte Lysander
The “incomplete” aspect of the Warhammer lore is one of its strongest and most fascinating aspects. This video leans into that heavily and I for one love it!
I think the 2nd legion were wiped out fighting the rangdan. My theory is that they initially discovered them and bore the full brunt of the attack until the DA and SW stepped in.
to imagine the Emperor's Angels and the Titans of Mars Being committed in such a number Yet still struggling to contain the Xenos, such a Horror rarely blighted our blessed Imperium,
This sounds like a good place for the black library to start a crusade unification series, and I want now.
The Black Library is terrible apart from two authors, and only one of those is consistent with his quality.
Edited 5o remove retardation.
Oof, reading Blacked Library publications.

Blessed Historitor, you honor us by bequeathing unto us another great work for the Imperium. Ave Imperator!
Im seriously getting "The Thing" vibes. Imagine an interstellar empire of those guys.
Also yes, it was probably Cypher who left that note for you.
walking up to the Eternity Gates to ask the Emperor what was goin on in 860-930 M30 (I am going to get vaporized by custodes)
I like how you always do the Scholar Scripture characters because your voice carries the proper unapologetic pompousness for it.
This has actually shed more light on the xenocides than one would think for those adepts capable of extrapolation

@@OculusImperia I hope you're doing well during this annoyingly long crisis.
I imagine the historator had a really good time looking for good sources for this one.
The number of topics in this record that themselves would draw the attention of the Inquisition... A bold decision, sir.
I'd been craving knowledge on this topic. Excellent video.
oculus character develoment
oculus on xenos: *talks with almost palpable disgust*

Could part of the reason there are not many records on the Rangdan Xenocides is because in these campaigns the "lost" primarchs/legion partook in these and failed in such a way that led to them being "lost" and to discuss these campaigns one must discuss the the lost. The Emperor does not accept failure. See oculus record on the lost primarchs.
I am very glad you covered this to the best of your ability, it's always been a cool little question mark in Great Crusade history.
Great Video. The Rangda being a bacteria makes sense. Supposedly, the Rangdan Xenocide was where Russ may have been ordered to kill the Primarchs of the 2nd and 11th Legions. If they were infected and made Rangda, it makes sense why they were stricken from the records.
The 1st legion taking on a exenos infected lost legion would explain the massive losses and why the records are hidden.
Yep. Would explain why the big E wants all records suppressed. Nobody should find out that's even possible.
Rip and tear the xeno
Masterfully rendered. Superb effort as always
Wonder if he's going to bring up that one issue of the Imperial Guardsmen's handbook that accidentally had some reports from the Rangdan Xenocide printed on it referring to the II and XI legions

So vile and evil, even the Tyranids do what they do out of base instinct; to eat and continue. But these chose to do this... Emperor save us.
Man I hope after the Heresy we get a look at the Crusade and this event. So interesting
... How terrifying would have been if they Tyranids had absorbed this species, Thank the Man-Emperor it was destroyed.
Gloriam Excelsus Terra.
Hydra Dominatus.
Plot twist imagine those fuckers absorbed by the bloody cockroaches
In this particular cases, I can totally see it working other way round or very least - becoming some hybrid, never fully subdueing the nature of Tyranids, but taking some measure of control on bioforms and Hive Fleet or two.
The Dragons name has been wispered more and more. I fear that his head will rise and cause destruction in the darkened times of the Imperium before the dawn rises upon victory.
‘An incomplete history’ 🙄 Emperor preserve us, as if a complete history were actually possible for Any period Ever.
Not a slip up in character, and still a complete as can be telling of the lore. I'm just impressed, as in every video. Amazing job!
YEEEES my favourite 40k youtuber talking about my favourite 30k event
Where does this fit together with the loss of the second and eleventh primarchs?
It...
In-universe -lore- history and theory??
This channel has gone on a whole new level!! 😆
The Emperor took the big stick out of the cupboard, and gave those Xenos scum a damn good thrashing !!!

So now the question becomes, how do the Lost Legions fit into this picture? They're both confirmed to have been present for the Xenocide.
Woot I requested this a few vids ago ! The Emperors light shines upon me.

The Rangdan xenocides are so heavily censored because the Rangdan sector is where the Weeping Angels came from.
.. That would be a brutal crossover. One of the few things from sci fi that would actually be able to beat the 40k universe.
There are quite a bit of Sci fi factions that could beat 40k soundly.
Whatever horror would convince the Emperor to unleash an ascended shard or heaven forbid a completed Void Dragon against an enemy when even the Necrons are horrified at such a prospect is a truly terrifying one.
It was furries.
@@korbetthein3072 lol you mean space wolves?

Note such features:
1) Technological superiority over imperium
2)
Not a single mention in the sources of necrons or eldar
3) Paranoidal destruction of all information about these "Aliens"
4) Mention as the "only threat" to the "Imperium" .... Not to "Humanity" ;)
5) Explicit specialization of slaughts for working with humans
6) Information about of "alien wars" of DAoT's people in this sector of galaxy. Clearly successful. Otherwise there would be no people in it.
about Lost primarchs:
Neither the complete destruction of the legion in battle, nor the genetic decay are sufficient reasons for total oblivion. It just shows what a great enemy was defeated by the Emperor!
The winner forgets only that which shows his weakness. Which threat can be repeated.
I see only two possible reasons:
1
) Primarchs voluntarily, being in “their mind and control”, accepted the ideas of the enemy and went over to his side.
